Smooth atlas stratified spaces, K-Homology Orientations, and Gysin maps. Part 2

In this Part 2 of our article we give a detailed discussion of the compatibility between the analytic Gysin maps we have defined in Part 1 and the topological Gysin maps defined by the second author. A significant role is played by a bordism-like description of K-homology due to Jakob which is closely related to the geometric K-homology theory of Baum and Douglas. We give a self-contained proof of the equivalence of the former with the analytic K-homology theory of Kasparov. As an intermediate step towards proving our main result we use Thom's transversality theorem to describe Gysin maps compatibly with Jakob's definition of K-homology.

Smooth atlas stratified spaces, K-Homology Orientations, and Gysin maps

We introduce smooth atlas stratified spaces. We show that this class is closed under cartesian products; consequently, it is possible to define fiber bundles of smooth atlas stratified spaces. We describe the resolution of such a space to a manifold with fibered corners and use this result in order to prove that the class of smooth atlas stratified spaces coincides with that of Thom-Mather stratified spaces. We then consider Witt pseudomanifolds (such as singular complex algebraic varieties) where it is well-known that a bordism invariant signature is available and equal to the Fredholm index of a realization of the signature operator. To each oriented fiber bundle of stratified spaces, with Witt fibers, we assign a class in bivariant KK-theory (with 2 inverted). Kasparov multiplication by this element defines a Gysin map in analytic K-homology and one of our main results is that this Gysin map preserves the analytic signature class of Witt spaces. We prove in fact a more general result: functoriality for fiber bundles in the sense that if one fiber bundle is the composition of two others then the KK-class of the former is the Kasparov product of the classes of the latter. We also discuss this result for other Dirac-type operators satisfying an analytic Witt condition, for example the spin-Dirac operator on a fibration of psc-Witt spin pseudomanifolds. We next define the analytic Gysin map associated to an oriented normally non-singular inclusion of Witt spaces and prove that it also preserves the signature class. Finally, we relate the analytic signature class of a Witt space with the topological Siegel-Sullivan orientation. Specifically we show that if one applies the inverse of the second Adams operation to the Sullivan orientation and complexifies then one obtains our analytic signature class under the natural identification between analytic and topological K-homology.

Sub-Riemannian limit of the differential form heat kernels of contact manifolds

We study the behavior of the heat kernel of the Hodge Laplacian on a contact manifold endowed with a family of Riemannian metrics that blow-up the directions transverse to the contact distribution. We apply this to analyze the behavior of global spectral invariants such as the eta-invariant and the determinant of the Laplacian. In particular we prove that contact versions of the relative eta-invariant and the relative analytic torsion are equal to their Riemannian analogues and hence topological.

Compactification of semi-simple Lie groups

We discuss the `hd-compactification' of a semi-simple Lie group to a manifold with corners; it is the real analog of the wonderful compactification of deConcini and Procesi. There is a 1-1 correspondence between the boundary faces of the compactification and conjugacy classes of parabolic subgroups with the boundary face fibering over two copies of the corresponding flag variety with fiber modeled on the (compactification of the) reductive part. On the hd-compactification Harish-Chandra's Schwartz space is identified with a space of conormal functions of rapid-logarithmic decay relative to square-integrable functions.

Poincare-Lovelock metrics on conformally compact manifolds

An important tool in the study of conformal geometry, and the AdS/CFT correspondence in physics, is the Fefferman-Graham expansion of conformally compact Einstein metrics. We show that conformally compact metrics satisfying a generalization of the Einstein equation, Poincare-Lovelock metrics, also have Fefferman-Graham expansions. Moreover we show that conformal classes of metrics that are near that of the round metric on the n-sphere have fillings into the ball satisfying the Lovelock equation, extending the existence result of Graham-Lee for Einstein metrics.

Compactification of SL(2)

We discuss `hd-compactifications' of $\SL(2,\bbK)$ for $\bbK=\bbC$ or $\bbR.$ These are compact manifolds with boundary on which both the Schwartz and the Harish-Chandra Schwartz spaces are shown to be relatively standard spaces of conormal functions relative to the boundary. Closure under convolution and other module properties are shown to follow from the structure of appropriate generalized product spaces and the functorial properties of conormal functions and smooth maps between manifolds with corners. It is anticipated that a similar approach applies to general real reductive Lie groups, with the additional complications for $\SL(n,\bbK)$ being essentially combinatorial.

A Cheeger-M\"uller theorem for manifolds with wedge singularities

We study the spectrum and heat kernel of the Hodge Laplacian with coefficients in a flat bundle on a closed manifold degenerating to a manifold with wedge singularities. Provided the Hodge Laplacians in the fibers of the wedge have an appropriate spectral gap, we give uniform constructions of the resolvent and heat kernel on suitable manifolds with corners. When the wedge manifold and the base of the wedge are odd dimensional, this is used to obtain a Cheeger-M\"uller theorem relating analytic torsion with the Reidemeister torsion of the natural compactification by a manifold with boundary.

The index formula for families of Dirac type operators on pseudomanifolds

We study families of Dirac-type operators, with compatible perturbations, associated to wedge metrics on stratified spaces. We define a closed domain and, under an assumption of invertible boundary families, prove that the operators are self-adjoint and Fredholm with compact resolvents and trace-class heat kernels. We establish a formula for the Chern character of their index.

Stratified surgery and K-theory invariants of the signature operator

In work of Higson-Roe the fundamental role of the signature as a homotopy and bordism invariant for oriented manifolds is made manifest in how it and related secondary invariants define a natural transformation between the (Browder-Novikov-Sullivan-Wall) surgery exact sequence and a long exact sequence of C*-algebra K-theory groups. In recent years the (higher) signature invariants have been extended from closed oriented manifolds to a class of stratified spaces known as L-spaces or Cheeger spaces. In this paper we show that secondary invariants, such as the rho-class, also extend from closed manifolds to Cheeger spaces. We revisit a surgery exact sequence for stratified spaces originally introduced by Browder-Quinn and obtain a natural transformation analogous to that of Higson-Roe. We also discuss geometric applications.

On the Hodge theory of stratified spaces

This article is a survey of recent work of the author, together with Markus Banagl, Eric Leichtnam, Rafe Mazzeo, and Paolo Piazza, on the Hodge theory of stratified spaces. We discuss how to resolve a Thom-Mather stratified space to a manifold with corners with an iterated fibration structure and the generalization of a perversity in the sense of Goresky-MacPherson to a mezzoperversity. We define Cheeger spaces and their signatures and describe how to carry out the analytic proof of the Novikov conjecture on these spaces. Finally we review the reductive Borel-Serre compactification of a locally symmetric space to a stratified space and describe its resolution to a manifold with corners.

Analytic torsion and R-torsion of Witt representations on manifolds with cusps

We establish a Cheeger-Muller theorem for unimodular representations satisfying a Witt condition on a noncompact manifold with cusps. This class of spaces includes all non-compact hyperbolic spaces of finite volume, but we do not assume that the metric has constant curvature nor that the link of the cusp is a torus. We use renormalized traces in the sense of Melrose to define the analytic torsion and we relate it to the intersection R-torsion of Dar of the natural compactification to a stratified space. Our proof relies on our recent work on the behavior of the Hodge Laplacian spectrum on a closed manifold undergoing degeneration to a manifold with fibered cusps.

Resolvent, heat kernel and torsion under degeneration to fibered cusps

Manifolds with fibered cusps are a class of complete noncompact Riemannian manifolds including all locally symmetric spaces of rank one. We study the spectrum of the Hodge Laplacian with coefficients in a flat bundle on a closed manifold undergoing degeneration to a manifold with fibered cusps. We obtain precise asymptotics for the resolvent, the heat kernel, and the determinant of the Laplacian. Using these asymptotics we obtain a topological description of the analytic torsion on a manifold with fibered cusps in terms of the R-torsion of the underlying manifold with boundary.

The Index of Dirac Operators on Incomplete Edge Spaces

We derive a formula for the index of a Dirac operator on a compact, even-dimensional incomplete edge space satisfying a "geometric Witt condition". We accomplish this by cutting off to a smooth manifold with boundary, applying the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem, and taking a limit. We deduce corollaries related to the existence of positive scalar curvature metrics on incomplete edge spaces.

Refined intersection homology on non-Witt spaces

We develop a generalization to non-Witt spaces of the intersection homology theory of Goresky-MacPherson. The second author has described the self-dual sheaves compatible with intersection homology, and the other authors have described a generalization of Cheeger's L2 de Rham cohomology. In this paper we extend both of these cohomologies by describing all sheaf complexes in the derived category of constructible sheaves that are compatible with middle perversity intersection cohomology, though not necessarily self-dual. On Thom-Mather stratified spaces this refined intersection cohomology theory coincides with the analytic de Rham theory.

The Novikov conjecture on Cheeger spaces

We prove the Novikov conjecture on oriented Cheeger spaces whose fundamental group satisfies the strong Novikov conjecture. A Cheeger space is a stratified pseudomanifold admitting, through a choice of ideal boundary conditions, an L2-de Rham cohomology theory satisfying Poincare duality. We prove that this cohomology theory is invariant under stratified homotopy equivalences and that its signature is invariant under Cheeger space cobordism. Analogous results, after coupling with a Mishchenko bundle associated to any Galois covering, allow us to carry out the analytic approach to the Novikov conjecture: we define higher analytic signatures of a Cheeger space and prove that they are stratified homotopy invariants whenever the assembly map is rationally injective. Finally we show that the analytic signature of a Cheeger space coincides with its topological signature as defined by Banagl.

Hodge theory on Cheeger spaces

We extend the study of the de Rham operator with ideal boundary conditions from the case of isolated conic singularities, as analyzed by Cheeger, to the case of arbitrary stratified pseudomanifolds. We introduce a class of ideal boundary operators and the notion of mezzoperversity, which intermediates between the standard lower and upper middle perversities in intersection theory, as interpreted in this de Rham setting, and show that the de Rham operator with these boundary conditions is Fredholm and has compact resolvent. We also prove an isomorphism between the resulting Hodge and L2 de Rham cohomology groups, and that these are independent of the choice of iterated edge metric. On spaces which admit ideal boundary conditions of this type which are also self-dual, which we call `Cheeger spaces', we show that these Hodge/de Rham cohomology groups satisfy Poincare Duality.

Compactness of relatively isospectral sets of surfaces via conformal surgeries

We introduce a notion of relative isospectrality for surfaces with boundary having possibly non-compact ends either conformally compact or asymptotic to cusps. We obtain a compactness result for such families via a conformal surgery that allows us to reduce to the case of surfaces hyperbolic near infinity recently studied by Borthwick and Perry, or to the closed case by Osgood, Phillips and Sarnak if there are only cusps.

The signature package on Witt spaces

In this paper we prove a variety of results about the signature operator on Witt spaces. First, we give a parametrix construction for the signature operator on any compact, oriented, stratified pseudomanifold X which satisfies the Witt condition. This construction, which is inductive over the `depth' of the singularity, is then used to show that the signature operator is essentially self-adjoint and has discrete spectrum of finite multiplicity, so that its index -- the analytic signature of X -- is well-defined. This provides an alternate approach to some well-known results due to Cheeger. We then prove some new results. By coupling this parametrix construction to a C*_r\Gamma-Mishchenko bundle associated to any Galois covering of X with covering group \Gamma, we prove analogues of the same analytic results, from which it follows that one may define an analytic signature index class as an element of the K-theory of C*_r\Gamma. We go on to establish in this setting and for this class the full range of conclusions which sometimes goes by the name of the signature package. In particular, we prove a new and purely topological theorem, asserting the stratified homotopy invariance of the higher signatures of X, defined through the homology L-class of X, whenever the rational assembly map K_* (B\Gamma)\otimes\bbQ \to K_*(C*_r \Gamma)\otimes \bbQ is injective.
