On the value-distribution of the logarithms of symmetric power L-functions in the level aspect

We consider the value distribution of logarithms of symmetric power L-functions associated with newforms of even weight and prime power level. In the symmetric square case, under certain plausible analytical conditions, we prove that certain averages of those values in the level aspect, involving continuous bounded or Riemann integrable test functions, can be written as integrals involving a density function (the "M-function") which is related with the Sato-Tate measure. Moreover, even in the case of general symmetric power L-functions, we show the same type of formula when for some special type of test functions. We see that a kind of parity phenomenon of the density function exists.

Sur le th\'eor\`eme de Brauer-Siegel g\'en\'eralis\'e

We extend the Brauer-Siegel theorem to new families of number fields, both in the classical setting of asymptotically bad families and in the more general framework due to Tsfasman and Vl\u{a}du\c{t} of asymptotically exact families. We introduce a notion of Galois complexity for extensions of number fields, and show that the generalized Brauer-Siegel theorem, as conjectured by Tsfasman and Vl\u{a}du\c{t}, holds for families in which the complexity does not grow too fast. This allows to unify and extend all previously known results. The crucial step in our work is the proof of a new version -- stated in terms of our Galois complexity -- of a fundamental principle due to Stark descending exceptional zeroes of zeta functions down to quadratic number fields. Among the hitherto unknown cases we are able to treat are the families of number fields contained in the solvable Galois closure of a given number field.

Toward good families of codes from towers of surfaces

We introduce in this article a new method to estimate the minimum distance of codes from algebraic surfaces. This lower bound is generic, i.e. can be applied to any surface, and turns out to be ``liftable'' under finite morphisms, paving the way toward the construction of good codes from towers of surfaces. In the same direction, we establish a criterion for a surface with a fixed finite set of closed points $\mathcal P$ to have an infinite tower of $\ell$--\'etale covers in which $\mathcal P$ splits totally. We conclude by stating several open problems. In particular, we relate the existence of asymptotically good codes from general type surfaces with a very ample canonical class to the behaviour of their number of rational points with respect to their $K^2$ and coherent Euler characteristic.

On M-functions associated with modular forms

Let $f$ be a primitive cusp form of weight $k$ and level $N,$ let $χ$ be a Dirichlet character of conductor coprime with $N,$ and let $\mathfrak{L}(f\otimes χ, s)$ denote either $\log L(f\otimes χ, s)$ or $(L'/L)(f\otimes χ, s).$ In this article we study the distribution of the values of $\mathfrak{L}$ when either $χ$ or $f$ vary. First, for a quasi-character $ψ\colon \mathbb{C} \to \mathbb{C}^\times$ we find the limit for the average $\mathrm{Avg}\_χψ(L(f\otimesχ, s)),$ when $f$ is fixed and $χ$ varies through the set of characters with prime conductor that tends to infinity. Second, we prove an equidistribution result for the values of $\mathfrak{L}(f\otimes χ,s)$ by establishing analytic properties of the above limit function. Third, we study the limit of the harmonic average $\mathrm{Avg}^h\_f ψ(L(f, s)),$ when $f$ runs through the set of primitive cusp forms of given weight $k$ and level $N\to \infty.$ Most of the results are obtained conditionally on the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis for $L(f\otimesχ, s).$

The K($π$,1)-property for marked curves over finite fields

We investigate the K($π$,1)-property for p of smooth, marked curves (X,T) defined over finite fields of characteristic p. We prove that (X,T) has the K($π$,1)-property if X is affine and give positive and negative examples in the proper case. We also consider the unmarked proper case over a finite field of characteristic different to p.

On the Number of Rational Points of Jacobians over Finite Fields

In this article we prove lower and upper bounds for class numbers of algebraic curves defined over finite fields. These bounds turn out to be better than most of the previously known bounds obtained using combinatorics. The methods used in the proof are essentially those from the explicit asymptotic theory of global fields. We thus provide a concrete application of effective results from the asymptotic theory of global fields and their zeta-functions.

Quelques résultats effectifs concernant les invariants de Tsfasman-Vladuts

We consider properties of infinite algebraic extensions of global fields through their Tsfasman-Vladuts invariants (related in particular to the decomposition of primes). We use recent results of A. Schmidt and a weak effective version of the Grunwald-Wang theorem to construct infinite global fields having at the same time a given finite set of positive invariants, a prescribed set of invariants being zero and a controlled deficiency.

On Tsfasman--Vlăduţ Invariants of Infinite Global Fields

In this article we study certain asymptotic properties of global fields. We consider the set of Tsfasman-Vladuts invariants of infinite global fields and answer some natural questions arising from their work. In particular, we prove the existence of infinite global fields having finitely many strictly positive invariants at given places, and the existence of infinite number fields with certain prescribed invariants being zero. We also give precisions on the deficiency of infinite global fields and on the primes decomposition in those fields.

Generalised Mertens and Brauer-Siegel Theorems

In this article, we prove a generalisation of the Mertens theorem for prime numbers to number fields and algebraic varieties over finite fields, paying attention to the genus of the field (or the Betti numbers of the variety), in order to make it tend to infinity and thus to point out the link between it and the famous Brauer-Siegel theorem. Using this we deduce an explicit version of the generalised Brauer-Siegel theorem under GRH, and a unified proof of this theorem for asymptotically exact families of almost normal number fields.
