Warping and F-term uplifting

We analyse the effective supergravity model of a warped compactification with matter on D3 and D7-branes. We find that the main effect of the warp factor is to modify the F-terms while leaving the D-terms invariant. Hence warped models with moduli stabilisation and a small positive cosmological constant resulting from a large warping can only be achieved with an almost vanishing D-term and a F-term uplifting. By studying string-motivated examples with gaugino condensation on magnetised D7-branes, we find that even with a vanishing D-term, it is difficult to achieve a Minkowski minimum for reasonable parameter choices. When coupled to an ISS sector the AdS vacua is uplifted, resulting in a small gravitino mass for a warp factor of order 10^-5.

Detecting Chameleons through Casimir Force Measurements

The best laboratory constraints on strongly coupled chameleon fields come not from tests of gravity per se but from precision measurements of the Casimir force. The chameleonic force between two nearby bodies is more akin to a Casimir-like force than a gravitational one: The chameleon force behaves as an inverse power of the distance of separation between the surfaces of two bodies, just as the Casimir force does. Additionally, experimental tests of gravity often employ a thin metallic sheet to shield electrostatic forces, however this sheet mask any detectable signal due to the presence of a strongly coupled chameleon field. As a result of this shielding, experiments that are designed to specifically test the behaviour of gravity are often unable to place any constraint on chameleon fields with a strong coupling to matter. Casimir force measurements do not employ a physical electrostatic shield and as such are able to put tighter constraints on the properties of chameleons fields with a strong matter coupling than tests of gravity. Motivated by this, we perform a full investigation on the possibility of testing chameleon model with both present and future Casimir experiments. We find that present days measurements are not able to detect the chameleon. However, future experiments have a strong possibility of detecting or rule out a whole class of chameleon models.

Moduli Fields as Quintessence and the Chameleon

We consider models where moduli fields are not stabilized and play the role of quintessence. In order to evade gravitational tests, we investigate the possibility that moduli behave as chameleon fields. We find that, for realistic moduli superpotentials, the chameleon effect is not strong enough, implying that moduli quintessence models are gravitationally ruled out. More generally, we state a no-go theorem for quintessence in supergravity whereby models either behave like a pure cosmological constant or violate gravitational tests

The SUGRA Quintessence Model Coupled to the MSSM

We study the cosmological evolution of the universe when quintessence is modeled within supergravity, supersymmetry is broken in a hidden sector, and we also include observable matter in a third independent sector. We find that the presence of hidden sector supersymmetry breaking leads to modifications of the quintessence potential. We focus on the coupling of the SUGRA quintessence model to the MSSM and investigate two possibilities. First one can preserve the form of the SUGRA potential provided the hidden sector dynamics is tuned. The currently available limits on the violations of the equivalence principle imply a universal bound on the vacuum expectation value of the quintessence field now, κ^{1/2}Q\ll 1. On the other hand, the hidden sector fields may be stabilised leading to a minimum of the quintessence potential where the quintessence field acquires a mass of the order of the gravitino mass, large enough to circumvent possible gravitational problems. However, the cosmological evolution of the quintessence field is affected by the presence of the minimum of the potential. The quintessence field settles down at the bottom of the potential very early in the history of the universe. Both at the background and the perturbation levels, the subsequent effect of the quintessence field is undistinguishable from a pure cosmological constant

Dark Energy and the MSSM

We consider the coupling of quintessence to observable matter in supergravity and study the dynamics of both supersymmetry breaking and quintessence in this context. We investigate how the quintessence potential is modified by supersymmetry breaking and analyse the structure of the soft supersymmetry breaking terms. We pay attention to their dependence on the quintessence field and to the electroweak symmetry breaking, ie the pattern of fermion masses at low energy within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) coupled to quintessence. In particular, we compute explicitly how the fermion masses generated through the Higgs mechanism depend on the quintessence field for a general model of quintessence. Fifth force and equivalence principle violations are potentially present as the vacuum expectation values of the Higgs bosons become quintessence field dependent. We emphasize that equivalence principle violations are a generic consequence of the fact that, in the MSSM, the fermions couple differently to the two Higgs doublets. Finally, we also discuss how the scaling of the cold dark and baryonic matter energy density is modified and comment on the possible variation of the gauge coupling constants, among which is the fine structure constant, and of the proton-electron mass ratio

Boundary Inflation and the WMAP Data

Inflation in a five-dimensional brane world model with two boundary branes is studied. We make use of the moduli space approximation whereby the low energy theory reduces to a four-dimensional biscalar-tensor gravity plus a minimally coupled scalar field. After a detailed analysis of the inflationary solutions, we derive the evolution equations of the linear perturbations separating the adiabatic mode from two entropy modes. We then examine the primordial scalar and tensor power spectra and show that their tilt depends on the scalar-tensor coupling constant. Finally, the induced CMB anisotropies are computed and we present a Monte Carlo Markov Chains exploration of the parameter space using the first year WMAP data. We find a marginalized probability bound for the associated Eddington parameter at the end of inflation 1 - gamma < 0.002, at 95% confidence level. This suggests that future CMB data could provide crucial information helping to distinguish scalar-tensor and standard inflationary scenarios.

Small Scale Structure Formation in Chameleon Cosmology

Chameleon fields are scalar fields whose mass depends on the ambient matter density. We investigate the effects of these fields on the growth of density perturbations on sub-galactic scales and the formation of the first dark matter halos. Density perturbations on comoving scales $R < 1 {\rm pc}$ go non--linear and collapse to form structure much earlier than in standard $Λ$CDM cosmology. The resulting mini-halos are hence more dense and resilient to disruption. We therefore expect (provided that the density perturbations on these scales have not been erased by damping processes) that the dark matter distribution on small scales would be more clumpy in chameleon cosmology than in the $Λ$CDM model.

Shift Symmetry and Inflation in Supergravity

We consider models of inflation in supergravity with a shift symmetry. We focus on models with one moduli and one inflaton field. The presence of this symmetry guarantees the existence of a flat direction for the inflaton field. Mildly breaking the shift symmetry using a superpotential which depends not only on the moduli but also on the inflaton field allows one to lift the inflaton flat direction. Along the inflaton direction, the eta-problem is alleviated. Combining the KKLT mechanism for moduli stabilization and a shift symmetry breaking superpotential of the chaotic inflation type, we find models reminiscent of ``mutated hybrid inflation'' where the inflationary trajectory is curved in the moduli--inflaton plane. We analyze the phenomenology of these models and stress their differences with both chaotic and hybrid inflation.

Coupling Quintessence to Inflation in Supergravity

The evolution of the quintessence field during a phase of chaotic inflation is studied. The inflaton and the quintesssence field are described in a supergravity framework where the coupling between the inflaton and quintessence is induced by non-renormalisable operators suppressed by the Planck mass. We show that the resulting quintessence potential during inflation possesses a time--dependent minimum playing the role of an attractor. The presence of this attractor forces the quintessence field to be small during inflation. These initial conditions are such that the quintessence field is on tracks now.

Detecting Dark Energy in Orbit -- the Cosmological Chameleon

We show that the chameleon scalar field can drive the current phase of cosmic acceleration for a large class of scalar potentials that are also consistent with local tests of gravity. These provide explicit realizations of a quintessence model where the quintessence scalar field couples directly to baryons and dark matter with gravitational strength. We analyze the cosmological evolution of the chameleon field and show the existence of an attractor solution with the chameleon following the minimum of its effective potential. For a wide range of initial conditions, spanning many orders of magnitude in initial chameleon energy density, the attractor is reached before nucleosynthesis. Surprisingly, the range of allowed initial conditions leading to a successful cosmology is wider than in normal quintessence. We discuss applications to the cyclic model of the universe and show how the chameleon mechanism weakens some of the constraints on cyclic potentials.

Cosmic Acceleration in Massive Half-Maximal Supergravity

We consider massive half-maximal supergravity in (d+3) dimensions and compactify it on a symmetric three space. We find that the static configurations of Minkowski X S^3, obtained by balancing the positive scalar potential for the dilaton and the flux of a three-form through the three-sphere, are unstable. The resulting cosmological evolution breaks supersymmetry and leads to an accelerated expansion in d dimensions.

Brane World Cosmology

Recent developments in the physics of extra dimensions have opened up new avenues to test such theories. We review cosmological aspects of brane world scenarios such as the Randall--Sundrum brane model and two--brane systems with a bulk scalar field. We start with the simplest brane world scenario leading to a consistent cosmology: a brane embedded in an Anti--de Sitter space--time. We generalise this setting to the case with a bulk scalar field and then to two--brane systems. We discuss different ways of obtaining a low--energy effective theory for two--brane systems, such as the moduli space approximation and the low--energy expansion. A comparison between the different methods is given. Cosmological perturbations are briefly discussed as well as early universe scenarios such as the cyclic model and the born--again brane world model. Finally we also present some physical consequences of brane world scenarios on the cosmic microwave background and the variation of constants.

Cosmological constant and kinetic supersymmetry breakdown on a moving brane

We consider cosmological solutions in 5d locally supersymmetric theories including boundary actions, with either opposite tension branes for identical brane chiralities or equal tension branes for flipped brane chiralities. We analyse the occurrence of supersymmetry breakdown in both situations. We find that supersymmetry as seen by a brane observer is broken due to the motion of the brane in the bulk. When the brane energy-momentum tensor is dominated by the brane tension, the 4d vacuum energy cosmological constant on the observable brane is positive and proportional to the inverse square of the brane local time. We find that the mass splitting within supersymmetric multiplets living on the brane is of the order of the inverse of the brane local time, examplifying the tight relation between the vacuum energy scale and the supersymmetry breaking scale.

Cosmology and Brane Worlds: A Review

Cosmological consequences of the brane world scenario are reviewed in a pedagogical manner. According to the brane world idea, the standard model particles are confined on a hyper--surface (a so--called brane), which is embedded in a higher--dimensional spacetime (the so--called bulk). We begin our review with the simplest consistent brane world model: a single brane embedded in a five--dimensional Anti-de Sitter space--time. Then we include a scalar field in the bulk and discuss in detail the difference with the Anti-de Sitter case. The geometry of the bulk space--time is also analysed in some depth. Finally, we investigate the cosmology of a system with two branes and a bulk scalar field. We comment on brane collisions and summarize some open problems of brane world cosmology.

Fluctuating brane in a dilatonic bulk

We consider a cosmological brane moving in a static five-dimensional bulk spacetime endowed with a scalar field whose potential is exponential. After studying various cosmological behaviours for the homogeneous background, we investigate the fluctuations of the brane that leave spacetime unaffected. A single mode embodies these fluctuations and obeys a wave equation which we study for bouncing and ever-expanding branes.

Quintessence and the accelerating universe

Observations seem to indicate that our universe is presently accelerating due to the presence of dark energy. Quintessence represents a possible way to model the dark energy. In these proceedings, we briefly review its main properties.

Brane world supersymmetry, detuning, flipping and orbifolding

We emphasize the necessity of a delicate interplay between the gauge and gravitational sectors of five-dimensional brane worlds in creating phenomenologically relevant vacua. We discuss locally supersymmetric brane worlds with unflipped and flipped fermionic boundary conditions and with matter on the branes. We point out that a natural separation between the gauge and gravity sectors, very difficult in models with true extra dimensions, may be achieved in 4d models with deconstructed dimensions.

Custodial supersymmetry in non-supersymmetric quiver theories

We consider non-supersymmetric quiver theories obtained by orbifolding the N=4 supersymmetric U(K) gauge theory by a discrete Z_Γgroup embedded in the SU(4) R-symmetry group. We explicitly find that in such theories there are no one-loop quadratic divergences in the effective potential. Moreover, when the gauge group U(n)^Γof the quiver theory is spontaneously broken down to the diagonal U(n), we identify a custodial supersymmetry which is responsible for the fermion-boson degeneracy of the mass spectrum.
