Demonstrating Record Fidelity for the Quantum Fourier Transform

We demonstrate the Parity Architecture on quantum hardware, using the quantum Fourier transform (QFT) as a benchmark. As a result, a record performance in both fidelity and qubit count is achieved using quantum processors with a native CZ-based instruction set. On the IBM Heron r3 chip, a process fidelity of the QFT algorithm of ${F \approx 10^{-2}}$ for ${N=50}$ qubits is achieved. The scaling of the speedup compared to previous swap-based methods is super-exponential $\mathcal{O}(\exp(N^2))$. Furthermore, we show that the scaling can be improved further by including iSWAP gates in the instruction set.

Connectivity-aware Synthesis of Quantum Algorithms

We present a general method for the implementation of quantum algorithms that optimizes both gate count and circuit depth. Our approach introduces connectivity-adapted CNOT-based building blocks called Parity Twine chains. It outperforms all known state-of-the art methods for implementing prominent quantum algorithms such as the quantum Fourier transform or the Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm across a wide range of quantum hardware, including linear, square-grid, hexagonal, ladder and all-to-all connected devices. We show that even moderate increments in connectivity can yield significant efficiency improvements and reach the proven optimum for specific cases. Furthermore, we demonstrate a practical performance advantage of this approach for a wide range of compilation problems and quantum hardware.

CircuitQ: An open-source toolbox for superconducting circuits

We introduce CircuitQ, an open-source toolbox for the analysis of superconducting circuits implemented in Python. It features the automated construction of a symbolic Hamiltonian of the input circuit and a dynamic numerical representation of the Hamiltonian with a variable basis choice. Additional features include the estimation of the T1 lifetimes of the circuit states under various noise mechanisms. We review previously established circuit quantization methods and formulate them in a way that facilitates the software implementation. The toolbox is then showcased by applying it to practically relevant qubit circuits and comparing it to specialized circuit solvers. Our circuit quantization is applicable to circuit inputs from a large design space, and the software is open-sourced. We thereby add an important resource for the design of new quantum circuits for quantum information processing applications.

Demonstration and modelling of time-bin entangled photons from a quantum dot in a nanowire

Resonant excitation of the biexciton state in an InAsP quantum dot by a phase-coherent pair of picosecond pulses allows preparing time-bin entangled pairs of photons via the biexciton-exciton cascade. We show that this scheme can be implemented for a dot embedded in an InP nanowire. The underlying physical mechanisms can be represented and quantitatively analyzed by an effective three-level open system master equation. Simulation parameters including decay and intensity dependent dephasing rates are extracted from experimental data, which in turn let us predict the resulting entanglement and optimal operating conditions.

A Quantum N-Queens Solver

The N-queens problem is to find the position of N queens on an N by N chess board such that no queens attack each other. The excluded diagonals N-queens problem is a variation where queens cannot be placed on some predefined fields along diagonals. This variation is proven NP-complete and the parameter regime to generate hard instances that are intractable with current classical algorithms is known. We propose a special purpose quantum simulator that implements the excluded diagonals N-queens completion problem using atoms in an optical lattice and cavity-mediated long-range interactions. Our implementation has no overhead from the embedding allowing to directly probe for a possible quantum advantage in near term devices for optimization problems.
