Neural Network Machine Regression (NNMR): A Deep Learning Framework for Uncovering High-order Synergistic Effects

We propose a new neural network framework, termed Neural Network Machine Regression (NNMR), which integrates trainable input gating and adaptive depth regularization to jointly perform feature selection and function estimation in an end-to-end manner. By penalizing both gating parameters and redundant layers, NNMR yields sparse and interpretable architectures while capturing complex nonlinear relationships driven by high-order synergistic effects. We further develop a post-selection inference procedure based on split-sample, permutation-based hypothesis testing, enabling valid inference without restrictive parametric assumptions. Compared with existing methods, including Bayesian kernel machine regression and widely used post hoc attribution techniques, NNMR scales efficiently to high-dimensional feature spaces while rigorously controlling type I error. Simulation studies demonstrate its superior selection accuracy and inference reliability. Finally, an empirical application reveals sparse, biologically meaningful food group predictors associated with somatic growth among adolescents living in Mexico City.

Robust Spectral Watermark for Synthetic Tabular Data

The rise of generative AI has enabled the production of high-fidelity synthetic tabular data across fields such as healthcare, finance, and public policy, raising growing concerns about data provenance and misuse. Watermarking offers a promising solution to address these concerns by ensuring the traceability of synthetic data, but existing methods face many limitations: they are computationally expensive due to reliance on the inverse process of large diffusion models, struggle with mixed discrete-continuous data, or lack robustness to common post-processing attacks. To address these limitations, we propose TAB-DRW, an efficient and robust post-editing watermarking scheme for synthetic tabular data. TAB-DRW embeds watermark signals in the frequency domain: it normalizes heterogeneous features via the Yeo-Johnson transformation and standardization, applies the discrete Fourier transform (DFT), and adjusts the imaginary parts of adaptively selected entries according to precomputed pseudorandom bits. To further enhance robustness and efficiency, we introduce a novel rank-based pseudorandom bit generation method that enables row-wise retrieval without incurring storage overhead. Experiments on five benchmark tabular datasets show that TAB-DRW achieves strong detectability and robustness against post-processing and adaptive attacks, while preserving high data fidelity and fully supporting mixed-type features.

Quantifying Uncertainty in Classification Performance: ROC Confidence Bands Using Conformal Prediction

To evaluate a classification algorithm, it is common practice to plot the ROC curve using test data. However, the inherent randomness in the test data can undermine our confidence in the conclusions drawn from the ROC curve, necessitating uncertainty quantification. In this article, we propose an algorithm to construct confidence bands for the ROC curve, quantifying the uncertainty of classification on the test data in terms of sensitivity and specificity. The algorithm is based on a procedure called conformal prediction, which constructs individualized confidence intervals for the test set and the confidence bands for the ROC curve can be obtained by combining the individualized intervals together. Furthermore, we address both scenarios where the test data are either iid or non-iid relative to the observed data set and propose distinct algorithms for each case with valid coverage probability. The proposed method is validated through both theoretical results and numerical experiments.
