Numerical Solution of the Non-polynomial Schr\"odinger Equation

Starting from the 3D Gross-Pitaevskii equation we revisit the dimensional reduction to an effective one-dimensional wave-equation that describes the longitudinal dynamics of a Bose condensate in an axially-symmetric external potential. Using a variational approach, Salasnich et al. introduced the non-polynomial Schr\"odinger equation (NPSE) which takes into account radial broadening of the wave function due to particle interactions. A closed form was derived by neglecting slow variation of the radial wave function along the longitudinal direction. We show that the full equation can efficiently be implemented using a time splitting spectral scheme coupled to a constraint equation. We confirm the validity of the approximation for experimentally relevant parameters. The corrections are found to be localized to regions of strong density gradients for which we highlight the differences through a number of numerical examples comparing the different 1D models.

A time splitting spectral method for the Klein-Gordon-Maxwell system

We discuss a time-splitting spectral method for the solution of the Klein--Gordon--Maxwell system in quantum electrodynamics. The convergence in Hilbert space is proven theoretically and charge conservation is established. The theoretical order two for the Strang splitting is illustrated by numerical examples in 1D and 3D.

Dimension reduction for Nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations

We discuss mathematical methods to derive Nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations (NLS) in "low dimensional" settings, i.e. the 3-dimensional physical space e.g. to 2 or 1 space dimensions. Beside from the case the system exhibits an internal symmetry we consider the approaches of dimension reduction via confinement limits and the method of variation. We deal with 2 types of NLS: nonlocal nonlinearities like the Hartree equation, including the Schr\"odinger--Poisson system (SPS), and local nonlinearities like the Gross--Pitaevskii equation (GPE). Our theoretical considerations of dimension reduction get finally illustrated by numerical examples in a "quasi 1-d" setting.
