Fast multi-qubit global-entangling gates without individual addressing of trapped ions

We propose and study ways speeding up of the entangling operations in the trapped ions system with high fidelity. First, we find a scheme to increase the speed of a two-qubit gate without the limitation of trap frequency, which was considered as the fundamental limit. Second, we study the fast gate scheme for entangling more than two qubits simultaneously. We apply the method of applying multiple frequency components on laser beams for the gate operations. In particular, in order to avoid infinite terms from the coupling to carrier transition, we focus on the phase-insensitive gate scheme here. We carefully study the effect of large excitation of motional mode beyond the limit of Lamb-Dicke approximation by including up to second order terms of the Lamb-Dicke parameter. We study the speed limit of multi-qubit global entangling gates without individual addressing requirements. Furthermore, our gates can be made insensitive to the fluctuation of initial motional phases which are difficult to stabilise in the phase-insensitive gate scheme.

ClusterEA: Scalable Entity Alignment with Stochastic Training and Normalized Mini-batch Similarities

Entity alignment (EA) aims at finding equivalent entities in different knowledge graphs (KGs). Embedding-based approaches have dominated the EA task in recent years. Those methods face problems that come from the geometric properties of embedding vectors, including hubness and isolation. To solve these geometric problems, many normalization approaches have been adopted for EA. However, the increasing scale of KGs renders it hard for EA models to adopt the normalization processes, thus limiting their usage in real-world applications. To tackle this challenge, we present ClusterEA, a general framework that is capable of scaling up EA models and enhancing their results by leveraging normalization methods on mini-batches with a high entity equivalent rate. ClusterEA contains three components to align entities between large-scale KGs, including stochastic training, ClusterSampler, and SparseFusion. It first trains a large-scale Siamese GNN for EA in a stochastic fashion to produce entity embeddings. Based on the embeddings, a novel ClusterSampler strategy is proposed for sampling highly overlapped mini-batches. Finally, ClusterEA incorporates SparseFusion, which normalizes local and global similarity and then fuses all similarity matrices to obtain the final similarity matrix. Extensive experiments with real-life datasets on EA benchmarks offer insight into the proposed framework, and suggest that it is capable of outperforming the state-of-the-art scalable EA framework by up to 8 times in terms of Hits@1.

Observing frustrated quantum magnetism in two-dimensional ion crystals

Two-dimensional (2D) quantum magnetism is a paradigm in strongly correlated many-body physics. The understanding of 2D quantum magnetism can be expedited by employing a controllable quantum simulator that faithfully maps 2D-spin Hamiltonians. The 2D quantum simulators can exhibit exotic phenomena such as frustrated quantum magnetism and topological order and can be used to show quantum computational advantages. Many experimental platforms are being developed, including Rydberg atoms and superconducting annealers. However, with trapped-ion systems, which showed the most advanced controllability and quantum coherence, quantum magnetism was explored in one-dimensional chains. Here, we report simulations of frustrated quantum magnetism with 2D ion crystals. We create a variety of spin-spin interactions for quantum magnets, including those that exhibit frustration by driving different vibrational modes and adiabatically prepare the corresponding ground states. The experimentally measured ground states are consistent with the theoretical predictions and are highly degenerate for geometrically frustrated spin models in two dimensions. Quantum coherence of the ground states is probed by reversing the time evolution of the B-field to the initial value and then measuring the extent to which the remaining state coincides with the initial state. Our results open the door for quantum simulations with 2D ion crystals.

Self-aligned patterning technique for fabricating high-performance diamond sensor arrays with nanoscale precision

To efficiently align the creation of defect center with photonics structure in nanoscale precision is one of the outstanding challenges for realizing high-performance photonic devices and the application in quantum technology such as quantum sensing, scalable quantum systems, and quantum computing network. Here, we propose a facile self-aligned patterning technique wholly based on conventional engineering technology, with the doping precision can reach ~15nm. Specifically, we demonstrate this technique by fabricating diamond nanopillar sensor arrays, which show high consistency and near-optimal photon counts, high yield approaching the theoretical limit, and high filtering efficiency for different NV centers. Combined with appropriate crystal orientation, a saturated fluorescence rate of 4.65 Mcps and the best reported fluorescence-dependent detection sensitivity of 1900 cps^(-1/2) are achieved. This technique applicable to all similar solid-state systems should facilitate the development of parallel quantum sensing and scalable information processing.

Blue-band frequency comb and photodarkening in silica whispering gallery microresonators

To date there are extensive studies of optical nonlinearities in whispering gallery resonators (WGRs) in the near and mid-infrared wavelengths. Pushing this research into the visible region is equally valuable. Here, we demonstrate a Kerr frequency comb and Raman lasing at 462 nm in an SiO2 WGR. Notably, due to the high optical intensities achieved, photodarkening is unavoidable and can quickly degrade the optical quality of both the coupling optical nanofiber and the microcavity even at very low pump powers. Nonetheless, stable stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) and hyper-parametric oscillation in normally dispersed WGRs is demonstrated in the presence of photodarkening by taking advantage of in-situ thermal bleaching. These observations highlight the challenges of silica-based, short wavelength nonlinear optics in high quality, small mode volume devices. We propose a method to overcome this apparent limitation and demonstrate blue-band nonlinear optical processes in silica WGRs, thus providing a baseline for optics research in the blue region for any optical devices fabricated from SiO2.

Three-dimensional structure and formation mechanism of biskyrmions in uniaxial ferromagnets

Magnetic biskyrmions are observed in experiments but their existences are still under debate. In this work, we present the existence of biskyrmions in a magnetic film with tilted uniaxial anisotropy via micromagnetic simulations. We find biskyrmions and bubbles share a unified three-dimensional structure, in which the relative position of two intrinsic Bloch points dominates the two-dimensional topological property in the film middle. The film edge can drive Bloch points and transform bubbles into biskyrmions via the demagnetizing field. This mechanism is found in the formation process of biskyrmions in confined geometry under zero field. Our work clarifies the structure and formation mechanism of biskyrmions, emphasizing the three-dimensional aspect of skyrmion-related nanostructures.

Quality-aware Part Models for Occluded Person Re-identification

Occlusion poses a major challenge for person re-identification (ReID). Existing approaches typically rely on outside tools to infer visible body parts, which may be suboptimal in terms of both computational efficiency and ReID accuracy. In particular, they may fail when facing complex occlusions, such as those between pedestrians. Accordingly, in this paper, we propose a novel method named Quality-aware Part Models (QPM) for occlusion-robust ReID. First, we propose to jointly learn part features and predict part quality scores. As no quality annotation is available, we introduce a strategy that automatically assigns low scores to occluded body parts, thereby weakening the impact of occluded body parts on ReID results. Second, based on the predicted part quality scores, we propose a novel identity-aware spatial attention (ISA) module. In this module, a coarse identity-aware feature is utilized to highlight pixels of the target pedestrian, so as to handle the occlusion between pedestrians. Third, we design an adaptive and efficient approach for generating global features from common non-occluded regions with respect to each image pair. This design is crucial, but is often ignored by existing methods. QPM has three key advantages: 1) it does not rely on any outside tools in either the training or inference stages; 2) it handles occlusions caused by both objects and other pedestrians;3) it is highly computationally efficient. Experimental results on four popular databases for occluded ReID demonstrate that QPM consistently outperforms state-of-the-art methods by significant margins. The code of QPM will be released.

Significant-loophole-free test of Kochen-Specker contextuality using two species of atomic-ions

Quantum measurements cannot be thought of as revealing preexisting results, even when they do not disturb any other measurement in the same trial. This feature is called contextuality and is crucial for the quantum advantage in computing. Here, we report the first observation of quantum contextuality simultaneously free of the detection, sharpness and compatibility loopholes. The detection and sharpness loopholes are closed by adopting a hybrid two-ion system and highly efficient fluorescence measurements offering a detection efficiency of $100\%$ and a measurement repeatability $>98\%$. The compatibility loophole is closed by targeting correlations between observables for two different ions in a Paul trap, a $^{171}\mathrm{Yb}^{+}$ ion and a $^{138}\mathrm{Ba}^{+}$ ion, chosen so measurements on each ion use different operation laser wavelengths, fluorescence wavelengths, and detectors. The experimental results show a violation of the bound for the most adversarial noncontextual models and open a new way to certify quantum systems.

Efficient Reinforced Feature Selection via Early Stopping Traverse Strategy

In this paper, we propose a single-agent Monte Carlo based reinforced feature selection (MCRFS) method, as well as two efficiency improvement strategies, i.e., early stopping (ES) strategy and reward-level interactive (RI) strategy. Feature selection is one of the most important technologies in data prepossessing, aiming to find the optimal feature subset for a given downstream machine learning task. Enormous research has been done to improve its effectiveness and efficiency. Recently, the multi-agent reinforced feature selection (MARFS) has achieved great success in improving the performance of feature selection. However, MARFS suffers from the heavy burden of computational cost, which greatly limits its application in real-world scenarios. In this paper, we propose an efficient reinforcement feature selection method, which uses one agent to traverse the whole feature set, and decides to select or not select each feature one by one. Specifically, we first develop one behavior policy and use it to traverse the feature set and generate training data. And then, we evaluate the target policy based on the training data and improve the target policy by Bellman equation. Besides, we conduct the importance sampling in an incremental way, and propose an early stopping strategy to improve the training efficiency by the removal of skew data. In the early stopping strategy, the behavior policy stops traversing with a probability inversely proportional to the importance sampling weight. In addition, we propose a reward-level interactive strategy to improve the training efficiency via reward-level external advice. Finally, we design extensive experiments on real-world data to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method.

CollaborER: A Self-supervised Entity Resolution Framework Using Multi-features Collaboration

Entity Resolution (ER) aims to identify whether two tuples refer to the same real-world entity and is well-known to be labor-intensive. It is a prerequisite to anomaly detection, as comparing the attribute values of two matched tuples from two different datasets provides one effective way to detect anomalies. Existing ER approaches, due to insufficient feature discovery or error-prone inherent characteristics, are not able to achieve stable performance. In this paper, we present CollaborER, a self-supervised entity resolution framework via multi-features collaboration. It is capable of (i) obtaining reliable ER results with zero human annotations and (ii) discovering adequate tuples' features in a fault-tolerant manner. CollaborER consists of two phases, i.e., automatic label generation (ALG) and collaborative ER training (CERT). In the first phase, ALG is proposed to generate a set of positive tuple pairs and a set of negative tuple pairs. ALG guarantees the high quality of the generated tuples and hence ensures the training quality of the subsequent CERT. In the second phase, CERT is introduced to learn the matching signals by discovering graph features and sentence features of tuples collaboratively. Extensive experimental results over eight real-world ER benchmarks show that CollaborER outperforms all the existing unsupervised ER approaches and is comparable or even superior to the state-of-the-art supervised ER methods.

RecBole: Towards a Unified, Comprehensive and Efficient Framework for Recommendation Algorithms

In recent years, there are a large number of recommendation algorithms proposed in the literature, from traditional collaborative filtering to deep learning algorithms. However, the concerns about how to standardize open source implementation of recommendation algorithms continually increase in the research community. In the light of this challenge, we propose a unified, comprehensive and efficient recommender system library called RecBole, which provides a unified framework to develop and reproduce recommendation algorithms for research purpose. In this library, we implement 73 recommendation models on 28 benchmark datasets, covering the categories of general recommendation, sequential recommendation, context-aware recommendation and knowledge-based recommendation. We implement the RecBole library based on PyTorch, which is one of the most popular deep learning frameworks. Our library is featured in many aspects, including general and extensible data structures, comprehensive benchmark models and datasets, efficient GPU-accelerated execution, and extensive and standard evaluation protocols. We provide a series of auxiliary functions, tools, and scripts to facilitate the use of this library, such as automatic parameter tuning and break-point resume. Such a framework is useful to standardize the implementation and evaluation of recommender systems. The project and documents are released at https://recbole.io/.

Uncertainty-aware Clustering for Unsupervised Domain Adaptive Object Re-identification

Unsupervised Domain Adaptive (UDA) object re-identification (Re-ID) aims at adapting a model trained on a labeled source domain to an unlabeled target domain. State-of-the-art object Re-ID approaches adopt clustering algorithms to generate pseudo-labels for the unlabeled target domain. However, the inevitable label noise caused by the clustering procedure significantly degrades the discriminative power of Re-ID model. To address this problem, we propose an uncertainty-aware clustering framework (UCF) for UDA tasks. First, a novel hierarchical clustering scheme is proposed to promote clustering quality. Second, an uncertainty-aware collaborative instance selection method is introduced to select images with reliable labels for model training. Combining both techniques effectively reduces the impact of noisy labels. In addition, we introduce a strong baseline that features a compact contrastive loss. Our UCF method consistently achieves state-of-the-art performance in multiple UDA tasks for object Re-ID, and significantly reduces the gap between unsupervised and supervised Re-ID performance. In particular, the performance of our unsupervised UCF method in the MSMT17$\to$Market1501 task is better than that of the fully supervised setting on Market1501. The code of UCF is available at https://github.com/Wang-pengfei/UCF.

Double-EIT Ground-State Cooling of Stationary Two-Dimensional Ion Lattices

We theoretically and experimentally investigate double electromagnetically induced transparency (double-EIT) cooling of two-dimensional ion crystals confined in a Paul trap. The double-EIT ground-state cooling is observed for \Yb ions with clock state, for which EIT cooling has not been realized like many other ions with a simple $Λ$-scheme. A cooling rate of $\dot{\bar n}=34~(\pm1.8)~\rm{ms}^{-1}$ and a cooling limit of $\bar n=0.06~(\pm 0.059)$ are observed for a single ion. The measured cooling rate and limit are consistent with theoretical predictions. We apply double-EIT cooling to the transverse modes of two-dimensional (2D) crystals with up to 12 ions. In our 2D crystals, the micromotion and the transverse mode directions are perpendicular, which makes them decoupled. Therefore, the cooling on transverse modes is not disturbed by micromotion, which is confirmed in our experiment. For the center of mass mode of a 12 ions crystal, we observe a cooling rate and a cooling limit that are consistent with those of a single ion, including heating rates proportional to the number of ions. This method can be extended to other hyperfine qubits, and near ground-state cooling of stationary 2D crystals with large numbers of ions may advance the field of quantum information sciences.

Batch Coherence-Driven Network for Part-aware Person Re-Identification

Existing part-aware person re-identification methods typically employ two separate steps: namely, body part detection and part-level feature extraction. However, part detection introduces an additional computational cost and is inherently challenging for low-quality images. Accordingly, in this work, we propose a simple framework named Batch Coherence-Driven Network (BCD-Net) that bypasses body part detection during both the training and testing phases while still learning semantically aligned part features. Our key observation is that the statistics in a batch of images are stable, and therefore that batch-level constraints are robust. First, we introduce a batch coherence-guided channel attention (BCCA) module that highlights the relevant channels for each respective part from the output of a deep backbone model. We investigate channelpart correspondence using a batch of training images, then impose a novel batch-level supervision signal that helps BCCA to identify part-relevant channels. Second, the mean position of a body part is robust and consequently coherent between batches throughout the training process. Accordingly, we introduce a pair of regularization terms based on the semantic consistency between batches. The first term regularizes the high responses of BCD-Net for each part on one batch in order to constrain it within a predefined area, while the second encourages the aggregate of BCD-Nets responses for all parts covering the entire human body. The above constraints guide BCD-Net to learn diverse, complementary, and semantically aligned part-level features. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that BCDNet consistently achieves state-of-the-art performance on four large-scale ReID benchmarks.

Multi-task Learning with Coarse Priors for Robust Part-aware Person Re-identification

Part-level representations are important for robust person re-identification (ReID), but in practice feature quality suffers due to the body part misalignment problem. In this paper, we present a robust, compact, and easy-to-use method called the Multi-task Part-aware Network (MPN), which is designed to extract semantically aligned part-level features from pedestrian images. MPN solves the body part misalignment problem via multi-task learning (MTL) in the training stage. More specifically, it builds one main task (MT) and one auxiliary task (AT) for each body part on the top of the same backbone model. The ATs are equipped with a coarse prior of the body part locations for training images. ATs then transfer the concept of the body parts to the MTs via optimizing the MT parameters to identify part-relevant channels from the backbone model. Concept transfer is accomplished by means of two novel alignment strategies: namely, parameter space alignment via hard parameter sharing and feature space alignment in a class-wise manner. With the aid of the learned high-quality parameters, MTs can independently extract semantically aligned part-level features from relevant channels in the testing stage. MPN has three key advantages: 1) it does not need to conduct body part detection in the inference stage; 2) its model is very compact and efficient for both training and testing; 3) in the training stage, it requires only coarse priors of body part locations, which are easy to obtain. Systematic experiments on four large-scale ReID databases demonstrate that MPN consistently outperforms state-of-the-art approaches by significant margins. Code is available at https://github.com/WangKan0128/MPN.

PGNet: Real-time Arbitrarily-Shaped Text Spotting with Point Gathering Network

The reading of arbitrarily-shaped text has received increasing research attention. However, existing text spotters are mostly built on two-stage frameworks or character-based methods, which suffer from either Non-Maximum Suppression (NMS), Region-of-Interest (RoI) operations, or character-level annotations. In this paper, to address the above problems, we propose a novel fully convolutional Point Gathering Network (PGNet) for reading arbitrarily-shaped text in real-time. The PGNet is a single-shot text spotter, where the pixel-level character classification map is learned with proposed PG-CTC loss avoiding the usage of character-level annotations. With a PG-CTC decoder, we gather high-level character classification vectors from two-dimensional space and decode them into text symbols without NMS and RoI operations involved, which guarantees high efficiency. Additionally, reasoning the relations between each character and its neighbors, a graph refinement module (GRM) is proposed to optimize the coarse recognition and improve the end-to-end performance. Experiments prove that the proposed method achieves competitive accuracy, meanwhile significantly improving the running speed. In particular, in Total-Text, it runs at 46.7 FPS, surpassing the previous spotters with a large margin.

A packaged whispering gallery resonator device based on an optical nanoantenna coupler

In this work, we present the design and fabrication of a packaged whispering gallery mode (WGM) device based on an optical nanoantenna as the coupler and a glass microsphere as the resonator. The microspheres were fabricated from SiO$_2$ fiber or Er$^{3+}$-doped fiber, the latter creating a WGM laser with a threshold of 93 $μ$W at 1531 nm. The coupler-resonator WGM device is packaged in a glass capillary. The performance of the packaged microlaser is characterized, with lasing emission both excited in and collected from the WGM cavity via the nanoantenna. The packaged system provides isolation from environmental contamination, a small size, and unidirectional coupling while maintaining a high quality (Q-) factor ($\sim$10$^8$). It opens up new possibilities for practical applications of WGM microdevices in a variety of fields such as low threshold lasers, filters, and sensors.

Beating the Standard Quantum Limit under Ambient Conditions with Solid-State Spins

Precision measurement plays a crucial role in all fields of science. The use of entangled sensors in quantum metrology improves the precision limit from the standard quantum limit (SQL) to the Heisenberg limit (HL). To date, most experiments beating the SQL are performed on the sensors which are well isolated under extreme conditions. However, it has not been realized in solid-state spin systems at ambient conditions, owing to its intrinsic complexity for the preparation and survival of pure and entangled quantum states. Here we show a full interferometer sequence beating the SQL by employing a hybrid multi-spin system, namely the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) defect in diamond. The interferometer sequence starts from a deterministic and joint initialization, undergoes entanglement and disentanglement of multiple spins, and ends up with projective measurement. In particular, the deterministic and joint initialization of NV negative state, NV electron spin, and two nuclear spins is realized at room temperature for the first time. By means of optimal control, non-local gates are implemented with an estimated fidelity above the threshold for fault-tolerant quantum computation. With these techniques combined, we achieve two-spin interference with a phase sensitivity of 1.79 \pm 0.06 dB beyond the SQL and three-spin 2.77 \pm 0.10 dB. Moreover, the deviations from the HL induced by experimental imperfections are completely accountable. The techniques used here are of fundamental importance for quantum sensing and computing, and naturally applicable to other solid-state spin systems.
