A Chunk Caching Location and Searching Scheme in Content Centric Networking

Content Centric Networking (CCN) is a new network infrastructure around content dissemination and retrieval, shift from host addresses to named data. Each CCN router has a cache to store the chunks passed by it. Therefore the caching strategy about chunk placement can greatly affect the whole CCN performance. This paper proposes an implicit coordinate chunk caching location and searching scheme (CLS) in CCN hierarchical infrastructure. In CLS, there is at most one copy of a chunk cached on the path between a server and a leaf router. This copy is pulled down one level towards the leaf router by a request or pushed up one level towards the server by the cache eviction. Thus, it is possible to store more diverse contents in the whole CCN and improve the network performance. Plus, in order to reduce the server workload and file download time, a caching trail of chunk is created to direct the following request where to find the chunk. Extensive test-bed experiments have been performed to evaluate the proposed scheme in terms of a wide range of performance metrics. The results show that the proposed scheme outperforms existing algorithms.

MetaFlow: a Scalable Metadata Lookup Service for Distributed File Systems in Data Centers

In large-scale distributed file systems, efficient meta- data operations are critical since most file operations have to interact with metadata servers first. In existing distributed hash table (DHT) based metadata management systems, the lookup service could be a performance bottleneck due to its significant CPU overhead. Our investigations showed that the lookup service could reduce system throughput by up to 70%, and increase system latency by a factor of up to 8 compared to ideal scenarios. In this paper, we present MetaFlow, a scalable metadata lookup service utilizing software-defined networking (SDN) techniques to distribute lookup workload over network components. MetaFlow tackles the lookup bottleneck problem by leveraging B-tree, which is constructed over the physical topology, to manage flow tables for SDN-enabled switches. Therefore, metadata requests can be forwarded to appropriate servers using only switches. Extensive performance evaluations in both simulations and testbed showed that MetaFlow increases system throughput by a factor of up to 3.2, and reduce system latency by a factor of up to 5 compared to DHT-based systems. We also deployed MetaFlow in a distributed file system, and demonstrated significant performance improvement.

Long Range Correlation in Higgs Boson Plus Two Jets Production at the LHC

We study Higgs boson plus two high energy jets production at the LHC in the kinematics where the two jets are well separated in rapidity. The partonic processes are dominated by the t-channel weak boson fusion (WBF) and gluon fusion (GF) contributions. We derive the associated QCD resummation formalism for the correlation analysis where the total transverse momentum q_\perp of the Higgs boson and two jets is small. Because of different color structures, the resummation results lead to distinguished behaviors: the WBF contribution peaks at relative low q_\perp while all GF channel contributions are strongly de-correlated and spread to a much wider q_\perp range. By applying a kinematic cut on q_\perp, one can effectively increase the WBF signal to the GF background by a significant factor. This greatly strengthens the ability to investigate the WBF channel in Higgs boson production and study the couplings of Higgs to electroweak bosons.

Turbo-Equalization Using Partial Gaussian Approximation

This paper deals with turbo-equalization for coded data transmission over intersymbol interference (ISI) channels. We propose a message-passing algorithm that uses the expectation-propagation rule to convert messages passed from the demodulator-decoder to the equalizer and computes messages returned by the equalizer by using a partial Gaussian approximation (PGA). Results from Monte Carlo simulations show that this approach leads to a significant performance improvement compared to state-of-the-art turbo-equalizers and allows for trading performance with complexity. We exploit the specific structure of the ISI channel model to significantly reduce the complexity of the PGA compared to that considered in the initial paper proposing the method.

A BP-MF-EP Based Iterative Receiver for Joint Phase Noise Estimation, Equalization and Decoding

In this work, with combined belief propagation (BP), mean field (MF) and expectation propagation (EP), an iterative receiver is designed for joint phase noise (PN) estimation, equalization and decoding in a coded communication system. The presence of the PN results in a nonlinear observation model. Conventionally, the nonlinear model is directly linearized by using the first-order Taylor approximation, e.g., in the state-of-the-art soft-input extended Kalman smoothing approach (soft-in EKS). In this work, MF is used to handle the factor due to the nonlinear model, and a second-order Taylor approximation is used to achieve Gaussian approximation to the MF messages, which is crucial to the low-complexity implementation of the receiver with BP and EP. It turns out that our approximation is more effective than the direct linearization in the soft-in EKS with similar complexity, leading to significant performance improvement as demonstrated by simulation results.

Resummation of High Order Corrections in Higgs Boson Plus Jet Production at the LHC

We study the effect of multiple parton radiation to Higgs boson plus jet production at the LHC, by applying the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization formalism to resum large logarithmic contributions to all orders in the expansion of the strong interaction coupling. We show that the appropriate resummation scale should be the jet transverse momentum, rather than the partonic center of mass energy which has been normally used in the TMD resummation formalism. Furthermore, the transverse momentum distribution of the Higgs boson, particularly near the lower cut-off applied on the jet transverse momentum, can only be reliably predicted by the resummation calculation which is free of the so-called Sudakov-shoulder singularity problem, present in fixed-order calculations.

Fast Segmentation of Left Ventricle in CT Images by Explicit Shape Regression using Random Pixel Difference Features

Recently, machine learning has been successfully applied to model-based left ventricle (LV) segmentation. The general framework involves two stages, which starts with LV localization and is followed by boundary delineation. Both are driven by supervised learning techniques. When compared to previous non-learning-based methods, several advantages have been shown, including full automation and improved accuracy. However, the speed is still slow, in the order of several seconds, for applications involving a large number of cases or case loads requiring real-time performance. In this paper, we propose a fast LV segmentation algorithm by joint localization and boundary delineation via training explicit shape regressor with random pixel difference features. Tested on 3D cardiac computed tomography (CT) image volumes, the average running time of the proposed algorithm is 1.2 milliseconds per case. On a dataset consisting of 139 CT volumes, a 5-fold cross validation shows the segmentation error is $1.21 \pm 0.11$ for LV endocardium and $1.23 \pm 0.11$ millimeters for epicardium. Compared with previous work, the proposed method is more stable (lower standard deviation) without significant compromise to the accuracy.

Transverse Momentum Resummation for Dijet Correlation in Hadronic Collisions

We study the transverse momentum resummation for dijet correlation in hadron collisions based on the Collins-Soper-Sterman formalism. The complete one-loop calculations are carried out in the collinear factorization framework for the differential cross sections at low imbalance transverse momentum between the two jets. Important cross checks are performed to demonstrate that the soft divergences cancelled out between different diagrams, and in particular, those associated with final state jets. The leading and sub-leading logarithms are identified. All order resummation is derived following the transverse momentum dependent factorization at this order. Its phenomenological applications are also presented.

Scheme dependence and Transverse Momentum Distribution interpretation of Collins-Soper-Sterman resummation

Following an earlier derivation by Catani-de Florian-Grazzini (2000) on the scheme dependence in the Collins-Soper-Sterman (CSS) resummation formalism in hard scattering processes, we investigate the scheme dependence of the Transverse Momentum Distributions (TMDs) and their applications. By adopting a universal $C$-coefficient function associated with the integrated parton distributions, the difference between various TMD schemes can be attributed to a perturbative calculable function depending on the hard momentum scale. We further apply several TMD schemes to the Drell-Yan process of lepton pair production in hadronic collisions, and find that the constrained non-perturbative form factors in different schemes are remarkably consistent with each other and with that of the standard CSS formalism.

Extraction of Quark Transversity Distribution and Collins Fragmentation Functions with QCD Evolution

We study the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) evolution of the Collins azimuthal asymmetries in $e^+e^-$ annihilations and semi-inclusive hadron production in deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) processes. All the relevant coefficients are calculated up to the next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) order accuracy. By applying the TMD evolution at the approximate NLL order in the Collins-Soper-Sterman (CSS) formalism, we extract transversity distributions for $u$ and $d$ quarks and Collins fragmentation functions from current experimental data by a global analysis of the Collins asymmetries in back-to-back di-hadron productions in $e^+e^-$ annihilations measured by BELLE and BABAR Collaborations and SIDIS data from HERMES, COMPASS, and JLab HALL A experiments. The impact of the evolution effects and the relevant theoretical uncertainties are discussed. We further discuss the TMD interpretation for our results, and illustrate the unpolarized quark distribution, transversity distribution, unpolarized quark fragmentation and Collins fragmentation functions depending on the transverse momentum and the hard momentum scale. We make detailed predictions for future experiments and discuss their impact.

Globally Tuned Cascade Pose Regression via Back Propagation with Application in 2D Face Pose Estimation and Heart Segmentation in 3D CT Images

Recently, a successful pose estimation algorithm, called Cascade Pose Regression (CPR), was proposed in the literature. Trained over Pose Index Feature, CPR is a regressor ensemble that is similar to Boosting. In this paper we show how CPR can be represented as a Neural Network. Specifically, we adopt a Graph Transformer Network (GTN) representation and accordingly train CPR with Back Propagation (BP) that permits globally tuning. In contrast, previous CPR literature only took a layer wise training without any post fine tuning. We empirically show that global training with BP outperforms layer-wise (pre-)training. Our CPR-GTN adopts a Multi Layer Percetron as the regressor, which utilized sparse connection to learn local image feature representation. We tested the proposed CPR-GTN on 2D face pose estimation problem as in previous CPR literature. Besides, we also investigated the possibility of extending CPR-GTN to 3D pose estimation by doing experiments using 3D Computed Tomography dataset for heart segmentation.

Universal Non-perturbative Functions for SIDIS and Drell-Yan Processes

We update the well-known BLNY fit to the low transverse momentum Drell-Yan lepton pair productions in hadronic collisions, by considering the constraints from the semi-inclusive hadron production in deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) from HERMES and COMPASS experiments. We follow the Collins-Soper-Sterman (CSS) formalism with the b_*-prescription. A universal non-perturbative form factor associated with the transverse momentum dependent quark distributions is found in the analysis with a new functional form different from that of BLNY. This releases the tension between the BLNY fit to the Drell-Yan data with the SIDIS data from HERMES/COMPASS in the CSS resummation formalism.

Nucleon tensor charge from Collins azimuthal asymmetry measurements

We investigate the nucleon tensor charge from current experiments by a combined analysis of the Collins asymmetries in two hadron production in $e^+e^-$ annihilations and semi-inclusive hadron production in deep inelastic scattering processes. The transverse momentum dependent evolution is taken into account, for the first time, in the global fit of the Collins fragmentation functions and the quark transversity distributions at the approximate next-to-leading logarithmic order. We obtain the nucleon tensor charge contribution from up and down quarks as $δu=+0.30^{+0.12}_{-0.08}$ and $δd=-0.20_{-0.11}^{+0.28}$ at 90\% confidence level for momentum fraction $0.0065 \le x_B \le 0.35$ and $Q^2=$ 10 GeV$^2$.

Kinematical correlations for Higgs boson plus High Pt Jet Production at Hadron Colliders

We investigate the effect of QCD resummation to kinematical correlations in the Higgs boson plus high transverse momentum (Pt) jet events produced at hadron colliders. We show that at the complete one-loop order, the Collins-Soper-Sterman resummation formalism can be applied to derive the Sudakov form factor, which is found to be independent of jet-finding algorithm. We compare the singular behavior of resummation calculation to fixed order prediction in the case that Higgs boson and high Pt jet are produced nearly back-to-back in their transverse momenta, and find a perfect agreement. The phenomenological importance of the resummation effect at the LHC is also demonstrated.

Soft Factor Subtraction and Transverse Momentum Dependent Parton Distributions on Lattice

We study the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distributions in the newly proposed quasi-parton distribution function framework in Euclidean space. A soft factor subtraction is found to be essential to make the TMDs calculable on lattice. We show that the quasi-TMDs with the associated soft factor subtraction can be applied in hard QCD scattering processes such as Drell-Yan lepton pair production in hadronic collisions. This allows future lattice calculations to provide information on the non-perturbative inputs and energy evolutions for the TMDs. Extension to the generalized parton distributions and quantum phase space Wigner distributions will lead to a complete nucleon tomography on lattice.

Soft Gluon Resummations in Dijet Azimuthal Angular Correlations at the Collider

We derive all order soft gluon resummation in dijet azimuthal angular correlation in hadronic collisions at the next-to-leading logarithmic level. The relevant coefficients for the Sudakov resummation factor, the soft and hard factors, are calculated. The theory predictions agree well with the experimental data from D0 Collaboration at the Tevatron. This provides a benchmark calculation for the transverse momentum dependent QCD resummation for jet productions in hadron collisions and can be readily applied at the CERN LHC.

$B_c$ Exclusive Decays to Charmonium and a Light Meson at Next-to-Leading Order Accuracy

In this paper the next-to-leading order (NLO) corrections to $B_c$ meson exclusive decays to S-wave charmonia and light pseudoscalar or vector mesons, i.e. $π$, $K$, $ρ$, and $K^*$, are performed within non-relativistic (NR) QCD approach. The non-factorizable contribution is included, which is absent in traditional naive factorization (NF). And the theoretical uncertainties for their branching ratios are reduced compared with that of direct tree level calculation. Numerical results show that NLO QCD corrections markedly enhance the branching ratio with a K factor of 1.75 for $B_{c}^{\pm}\to η_{c} π^{\pm}$ and 1.31 for $B_{c}^{\pm}\to J/ψπ^{\pm}$. In order to investigate the asymptotic behavior, the analytic form is obtained in the heavy quark limit, i.e. $m_b \to \infty$. We note that annihilation topologies contribute trivia in this limit, and the corrections at leading order in $z= m_c/m_b$ expansion come from form factors and hard spectator interactions. At last, some related phenomenologies are also discussed.

Universal Suppression of Heavy Quarkonium Production in pA Collisions at Low Transverse Momentum

The nuclear suppression of heavy quarkonium production at low transverse momentum in pA collisions in high energy scatterings is investigated in the small-x factorization formalism. A universal suppression is found in the large Nc limit between the two formalisms to describe the heavy quarkonium production: the non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) and the color-evaporation model (CEM). This provides an important probe to the saturation momentum at small-x in big nucleus. We also comment on the phenomenological applications of our results.
