WIP: Energy-Efficient LLM-Based Serving Cluster Formulation in Cell-Free Massive MIMO

One way to increase the Energy Efficiency (EE) of 6G wireless networks is to utilize existing network infrastructure more efficiently. This can be achieved by introducing User-Centric Cell-Free Massive Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (UCCF MMMIMO), which allows for simultaneously serving a single user by multiple Base Stations (BSs). From this perspective, the key challenge is to decide which BSs should serve a given user, known as the Serving Cluster Formulation (SCF). In this paper, we propose to deal with this problem by using an Artificial Intelligence (AI) agent based on a Large Language Model (LLM), targeting improvement of EE. We evaluated the proposed AI agent using a complex, 3D Ray Tracer-based, cellular network simulator, comparing a few GPT models and state-of-the-art algorithms. The results show up to 32% gain in EE of the proposed AI agent compared to the baseline.

Modular Multi-Domain Digital Twin Architecture: Sustainable Intent-Driven 6G Management

Future 6G networks will operate across distributed and heterogeneous domain infrastructures, making conventional single-domain management insufficient for proactive, trustworthy automation. Network Digital Twins (NDTs) enable what-if analysis, AI-assisted optimization, and risk-free validation of control actions before deployment, yet monolithic end-to-end twins remain impractical due to scalability, fidelity, and cross-domain coordination challenges. Accordingly, this paper proposes a Digital Twin-enabled 6G architecture that exposes NDT capabilities as a specialized service domain within a multi-domain orchestration framework built on a state-of-the-art service-based 6G architecture. A DT Orchestrator interprets \textit{predictive} and \textit{prescriptive} what-if queries and composes domain-specific DT modules and simulators on demand, while decision authority remains with the requesting entity. Furthermore, a generalized workflow covers telemetry synchronization, simulation-based decision support, and closed-loop execution. The framework is demonstrated through a green-networking use case that couples a system-level O-RAN cellular digital twin component with a two-stage solar-allocation simulator, evaluated over a 105-base-station deployment in Poznan using simulative datasets. Joint coverage and renewable optimization reduces daily grid consumption by 28.5\% with 32 solar panels at the diminishing-returns threshold, with 17 base stations identified as both coverage-active and high-priority solar candidates as evidence that cross-domain NDT coordination enables sustainable, intent-driven 6G network management.

Large-scale wireless network management via Open-RAN Tandem Apps: Cell on/off switching use case

With growing mobile-network complexity, management and optimization have become increasingly difficult. Centralized algorithms face high control-data overhead and computational load, while distributed approaches often perform far from optimally. The O-RAN architecture introduces two tiers of RAN Intelligent Controllers (RICs), enabling hierarchical network-management schemes. This work proposes Tandem Apps: a pair of tightly coupled optimization mechanisms running on both controllers. We show how to design Tandem Apps through architectural and functional splitting to achieve an agile, low-complexity solution that still preserves a global network view. As an example, we implement Tandem Apps for cell on/off switching and evaluate them in a large heterogeneous network using real network data. Although the Tandem Apps concept is new, it remains fully compliant with the O-RAN standard, as validated using commercial network software.

Impact of Nonlinear Power Amplifier on Massive MIMO: Machine Learning Prediction Under Realistic Radio Channel

M-MIMO is one of the crucial technologies for increasing spectral and energy efficiency of wireless networks. Most of the current works assume that M-MIMO arrays are equipped with a linear front end. However, ongoing efforts to make wireless networks more energy-efficient push the hardware to the limits, where its nonlinear behavior appears. This is especially a common problem for the multicarrier systems, e.g., OFDM used in 4G, 5G, and possibly also in 6G, which is characterized by a high Peak-to-Average Power Ratio. While the impact of a nonlinear Power Amplifier (PA) on an OFDM signal is well characterized, it is a relatively new topic for the M-MIMO OFDM systems. Most of the recent works either neglect nonlinear effects or utilize simplified models proper for Rayleigh or LoS radio channel models. In this paper, we first theoretically characterize the nonlinear distortion in the M-MIMO system under commonly used radio channel models. Then, utilizing 3D-Ray Tracing (3D-RT) software, we demonstrate that these models are not very accurate. Instead, we propose two models: a statistical one and an ML-based one using 3D-RT results. The proposed statistical model utilizes the Generalized Extreme Value (GEV) distribution to model Signal to Distortion Ratio (SDR) for victim users, receiving nonlinear distortion, e.g., as interference from neighboring cells. The proposed ML model aims to predict SDR for a scheduled user (receiving nonlinear distortion along with the desired signal), based on the spatial characteristics of the radio channel and the operation point of each PA feeding at the M-MIMO antenna array. The predicted SDR can then be used to perform PA-aware per-user power allocation. The results show about 12% median gain in user throughput achieved by the proposed ML-based power allocation scheme over the state-of-the-art, fixed operating point scheme.

Efektywne energetycznie wielodostępowe przetwarzanie brzegowe w sieci 5G; Energy efficient Multi-access Edge Computing in 5G network

Multi-access edge computing is a technique that combines the use of communication networks and remote computing resources. It allows to perform complex computational tasks for devices with low computing power while maintaining low latencies. However, it is important to effectively allocate the computing tasks to individual nodes. The work will present how the multi-access edge computing system can be integrated into the 5G network, as well as how resources can be distributed between individual nodes to minimize energy consumption. Some new degrees of freedom will be presented, which enable a significant reduction in energy consumption compared to existing solutions for independent optimization of the computation and communication parts. Przedstawiony zostanie szereg nowych stopni swobody, które umożliwiają znaczne obniżenie zużycia energii w stosunku do istniejących rozwiązań niezależnej optymalizacji części obliczeniowej i komunikacyjnej.

O-RAN for Energy-Efficient Serving Cluster Formulation in User-Centric Cell-Free MMIMO

The 6G Massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MMIMO) networks can follow the so-called User-Centric Cell-Free (UCCF) architecture, where a single user is served by multiple Access Points (APs) coordinated by the Central Processing Unit (CPU). In this paper, we propose how O-RAN functionalities, i.e., rApp-xApp pair, can be used for energy-efficient Serving Cluster Formulation (SCF). Simulation studies show up to 37\% gain in Energy Efficiency (EE) of the proposed solution over the state-of-the-art Network-Centric (NC) designs.

Green Time-Critical Fog Communication and Computing

Fog computing allows computationally-heavy problems with tight time constraints to be solved even if end devices have limited computational resources and latency induced by cloud computing is too high. How can energy consumed by fog computing be saved while obeying latency constraints and considering not only computations but also transmission through wireless and wired links? This work examines the latency and energy consumption sources in fog networks and discusses models describing these costs for various technologies. Next, resource allocation strategies are discussed considering the various degrees of freedom available in such a complex system, and their influence on energy consumption and latency. Finally, a vision for a future distributed, AI-driven resources allocation strategy is presented and justified.

Radio Environment Map and Deep Q-Learning for 5G Dynamic Point Blanking

Dynamic Point Blanking (DPB) is one of the Coordinated MultiPoint (CoMP) techniques, where some Base Stations (BSs) can be temporarily muted, e.g., to improve the cell-edge users throughput. In this paper, it is proposed to obtain the muting pattern that improves cell-edge users throughput with the use of a Deep Q-Learning. The Deep Q-Learning agent is trained on location-dependent data. Simulation studies have shown that the proposed solution improves cell-edge user throughput by about 20.6%.

Task Allocation for Energy Optimization in Fog Computing Networks with Latency Constraints

Fog networks offer computing resources with varying capacities at different distances from end users. A Fog Node (FN) closer to the network edge may have less powerful computing resources compared to the cloud, but processing of computational tasks in an FN limits long-distance transmission. How should the tasks be distributed between fog and cloud nodes? We formulate a universal non-convex Mixed-Integer Nonlinear Programming (MINLP) problem minimizing task transmission- and processing-related energy with delay constraints to answer this question. It is transformed with Successive Convex Approximation (SCA) and decomposed using the primal and dual decomposition techniques. Two practical algorithms called Energy-EFFicient Resource Allocation (EEFFRA) and Low-Complexity (LC)-EEFFRA are proposed. They allow for successful distribution of network requests between FNs and the cloud in various scenarios significantly reducing the average energy cost and decreasing the number of computational requests with unmet delay requirements.

Radio Environment Maps for Dynamic Frequency Selection in V2X Communications

In this paper, we investigate the concept of database supported Vehicular Dynamic Spectrum Access (VDSA) for platooning. As various researchers show that the 5.9 GHz band, devoted for Intelligent Transportation Systems, may suffer from congestion of the channel, we propose to offload part of this traffic to white-spaces with the guidance of the active database system. In our work, we describe our measurement campaign which delivered data for population of the dedicated radio environment map. Once the map is created, it was used in three proposed algorithms for VDSA: an optimal and two pragmatic approaches.

Distributed Vehicular Dynamic Spectrum Access for Platooning Environments

In this paper, we propose a distributed Vehicular Dynamic Spectrum Access (VDSA) framework for vehicles operating in platoon formations. Given the potential for significant congestion in licensed frequency bands for vehicular applications such as 5.9 GHz. Our approach proposes to offload part of the intra-platoon data traffic to spectral white-spaces in order to enhance vehicular connectivity in support of on-road operations. To enable VDSA, a Bumblebee-based decision making process is employed which is based on the behavioral models of animals, is employed to provide a means of distributed transmission band selection. Simulation results show the distributed VDSA framework improves the leader packets reception ratio by 5%, thus indicating its potential to increase in reliability of intra-platoon communications.

The Impact of Blocking Cars on Pathloss Within a Platoon: Measurements for 26 GHz Band

Platooning is considered to be one of the possible prospective implementations of the autonomous driving concept, where the train-of-cars moves together following the platoon leader's commands. However, the practical realization of this scheme assumes the use of reliable communications between platoon members. In this paper, the results of the measurement experiment have been presented showing the impact of the blocking cars on the signal attenuation. The tests have been carried out for the high-frequency band, i.e. for 26.555 GHz. It has been observed that on one hand side, the attenuation can reach even tens of dB for 2 or 3 blocking cars, but in some locations, the impact of a two-ray propagation mitigates the presence of obstructing vehicles.

Beyond 5G: Big Data Processing for Better Spectrum Utilization

This article emphasizes the great potential of big data processing for advanced user- and situation-oriented, so context-aware resource utilization in future wireless networks. In particular, we consider the application of dedicated, detailed, and rich-in-content maps and records called Radio Service Maps, (RSM) for unlocking the spectrum opportunities in 6G networks. Due to the characteristics of 5G, in the future, there will be a need for high convergence of various types of wireless networks, such as cellular and the Internet-of-Things (IoT) networks, which are steadily growing and consequently considered as the studied use case in this work. We show that the 6G network significantly benefits from effective Dynamic Spectrum management (DSM) based on RSM which provides rich and accurate knowledge of the radio context; a knowledge that is stored and processed within database-oriented subsystems designed to support wireless networks for improving spectral efficiency. In this article, we discuss context-aware RSM subsystem architecture and operation for DSM in convergent 6G radio and IoT networks. By providing various use-cases, we demonstrate that the accurate definition and access to the rich context information lead to a significant improvement of the system performance. In consequence, we also claim that efficient big-data processing algorithms will be necessary for future applications.

Dynamic Power and Frequency Allocation Scheme for Autonomous Platooning

In this paper, we consider the use of radio environment maps (REMs) in vehicular dynamic spectrum access (VDSA) for vehicle platooning applications. We propose an algorithm that dynamically allocates the frequency bands and transmission power in the so-called TV white spaces (TVWS) for intra-platoon messaging, intending to maximize the reliability of the communications, simultaneously keeping the interference to the primary system below the required threshold. The proposed solution is evaluated in simulations, with the results indicating a significant increase in communications reliability with VDSA.

Similarity Measures for Location-Dependent MMIMO, 5G Base Stations On/Off Switching Using Radio Environment Map

The Massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MMIMO) technique together with Heterogeneous Network (Het-Net) deployment enables high throughput of 5G and beyond networks. However, a high number of antennas and a high number of Base Stations (BSs) can result in significant power consumption. Previous studies have shown that the energy efficiency (EE) of such a network can be effectively increased by turning off some BSs depending on User Equipments (UEs) positions. Such mapping is obtained by using Reinforcement Learning. Its results are stored in a so-called Radio Environment Map (REM). However, in a real network, the number of UEs' positions patterns would go to infinity. This paper aims to determine how to match the current set of UEs' positions to the most similar pattern, i.e., providing the same optimal active BSs set, saved in REM. We compare several state-of-the-art distance metrics using a computer simulator: an accurate 3D-Ray-Tracing model of the radio channel and an advanced system-level simulator of MMIMO Het-Net. The results have shown that the so-called Sum of Minimums Distance provides the best matching between REM data and UEs' positions, enabling up to 56% EE improvement over the scenario without EE optimization.
