Single-Atom Scale Structural Selectivity in Te Nanowires Encapsulated inside Ultra-Narrow, Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

Extreme nanowires (ENs) represent the ultimate class of crystals: They are the smallest possible periodic materials. With atom-wide motifs repeated in one dimension (1D), they offer a privileged perspective into the Physics and Chemistry of low-dimensional systems. Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) provide ideal environments for the creation of such materials. Here we present a comprehensive study of Te ENs encapsulated inside ultra- narrow SWCNTs with diameters between 0.7 nm and 1.1 nm. We combine state-of-the-art imaging techniques and 1D-adapted ab initio structure prediction to treat both confinement and periodicity effects. The studied Te ENs adopt a variety of structures, exhibiting a true 1D realisation of a Peierls structural distortion and transition from metallic to insulating behaviour as a function of encapsulating diameter. We analyse the mechanical stability of the encapsulated ENs and show that nanoconfinement is not only a useful means to produce ENs, but may actually be necessary, in some cases, to prevent them from disintegrating. The ability to control functional properties of these ENs with confinement has numerous applications in future device technologies, and we anticipate that our study will set the basic paradigm to be adopted in the characterisation and understanding of such systems.

Unfolding spinor wavefunctions and expectation values of general operators: Introducing the unfolding-density operator

We show that the spectral weights $W_{m\vec K}(\vec k)$ used for the unfolding of two-component spinor eigenstates $| {ψ_{m\vec K}^\mathrm{SC}} > = | α> | {ψ_{m\vec{K}}^\mathrm{SC, α}} > + | β> | {ψ_{m\vec{K}}^\mathrm{SC, β}} >$ can be decomposed as the sum of the partial spectral weights $W_{m\vec{K}}^μ(\vec k)$ calculated for each component $μ= α, β$ independently, effortlessly turning a possibly complicated problem involving two coupled quantities into two independent problems of easy solution. Furthermore, we define the unfolding-density operator $\hatρ_{\vec{K}}(\vec{k}_{i}; \, \varepsilon)$, which unfolds the primitive cell expectation values $φ^{pc}(\vec{k}; \varepsilon)$ of any arbitrary operator $\mathbf{\hatφ}$ according to $φ^{pc}(\vec{k}_{i}; \varepsilon) = \mathit{Tr}(\hatρ_{\vec{K}}(\vec{k}_{i}; \, \varepsilon)\,\,\hatφ)$. As a proof of concept, we apply the method to obtain the unfolded band structures, as well as the expectation values of the Pauli spin matrices, for prototypical physical systems described by two-component spinor eigenfunctions.

Optical and magnetic excitations of metal-encapsulating Si cages: A systematic study by time-dependent density functional theory

Systematic study of the optical and magnetic excitations of twelve MSi$_{12}$ and four MSi$_{10}$ transition metal encapsulating Si cages has been carried out by employing real time time-dependent density functional theory. Criteria for the choice of transition metals (M) are clusters' stability, synthesizability, and diversity. It was found that both the optical absorption and the spin-susceptibility spectra are mainly determined by, in decreasing order of importance: 1) the cage shape, 2) the group in the Periodic Table M belongs to, and 3) the period of M in the Periodic Table. Cages with similar structures and metal species that are close to each other in the Periodic Table possess spectra sharing many similarities, e. g., the optical absorption spectra of the MSi$_{12}$ (M = V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, and W), which are highly symmetric and belong to groups 4 and 5 of the Periodic Table, all share a very distinctive peak at around 4 eV. In all cases, although some of the observed transitions are located at the Si skeleton of the cages, the transition metal specie is always significant for the optical absorption and the spin-susceptibility spectra. Our results provide finger-print data for identification of gas-phase MSi$_{12}$ and MSi$_{10}$ by optical absorption spectroscopy.
