A Branch Set Stratification for Stationary Varifolds with Epsilon-Regularity

Suppose $\mathcal{V}$ is a class of stationary integral $n$-varifolds in $B^{n+k}_2(0)\subset\mathbb{R}^{n+k}$ which is closed under weak limits, homotheties, rotations, and disjoint decomposition, and suppose that $\mathcal {V}$ satisfies an $\epsilon$-regularity property near planes of (integer) multiplicity $\leq Q\in \{2,3,\dotsc\}$. This last condition, more precisely, requires that there be a constant $\epsilon = \epsilon({\mathcal V}, Q) \in (0, 1)$ such that if $V\in \mathcal{V}$ is, in the unit cylinder ${\mathbb R}^{k} \times B_{1}^{n}(0)$, $\epsilon$-close as varifolds to the plane $\{0\} \times {\mathbb R}^{n}$ taken with multiplicity $\leq Q$ then, in the half-cylinder ${\mathbb R}^{k} \times B_{1/2}^{n}(0)$, $V$ is represented by the graph of a Lipschitz multi-valued function over $B_{1/2}^{n}(0)$ with uniform quantitative estimates of a $C^{1,\alpha}$ nature. For any varifold in such a class $\mathcal{V}$, we prove that the set of branch points with density $\leq Q$ has Hausdorff dimension $\leq n-2$. By choosing suitable $\mathcal{V}$, a direct consequence of this result and the recently established regularity theorems of the second and third authors (one of which being joint with Becker-Kahn) is that if $V$ is a stationary integral $n$-varifold which is either: (a) represented by the graph of a $2$-valued Lipschitz function; or (b) codimension one, stable, and with no classical singularities of density $<Q$, then the Hausdorff dimension of the density $Q$ branch set ($Q=2$ in (a)) is at most $n-2$. Our proof utilises the planar frequency function introduced by the first and third authors in their work on area minimising currents, and thus does not require the Almgren center manifold for the analysis of branch points except in a single, geometrically canonical case where the center manifold satisfies additional simplifying properties.

An Optimal Regularity Theory for Immersed Stable Minimal Hypersurfaces with Small Singular Set

We show that if $M^n$ is a properly immersed, two-sided, stable minimal hypersurface in $B^{n+1}_1(0)\setminus S$, where $S$ is closed with $\mathcal{H}^{n-2}(S)=0$, then $\text{dim}_{\mathcal{H}}\text{sing}(M)\leq n-7$, namely $\overline{M}\cap B^{n+1}_1(0)$ is represented by a smooth minimal immersion outside a closed set of generally unavoidable singularities which has Hausdorff dimension at most $n-7$. This provides the optimal a priori size assumption on the non-immersed singular set in order to guarantee optimal regularity. Consequently, such objects form a compact class under mass upper bounds.

Minimal Surfaces with Stratified Branching Sets

Inspired by the Taubes-Wu construction of $\mathcal{C}^{1,\alpha}$ two-valued harmonic functions by the use of symmetry, we construct minimal surfaces with stratified branching sets as graphs of $\mathcal{C}^{1,\alpha}$ two-valued functions. We give three constructions. The first is perturbative and produces branched minimal submanifolds in arbitrary codimension as two-valued graphs over the $n$-ball or, slightly more generally, over the product of $B^n$ with a torus $\mathbb T^N$, parametrized by boundary data which is required to be small in a suitable norm. The second uses barrier methods together with a reflection argument to produce branched stable minimal hypersurfaces, again as two-valued graphs over the unit $n$-ball or $B^n \times \mathbb T^N$, parametrized by boundary data which now can be large. Finally, using bifurcation theory, we produce compact minimal submanifolds with similarly stratified branching sets in an ambient space $S^n \times \mathbb R$ with a suitable (analytic) warped product metric. These examples give minimal submanifolds with novel frequency values and whose branching sets have non-trivial deeper strata. While the main constructions are fairly elementary, they rely on the use of precisely tailored (and somewhat non-standard) function spaces, combined with a regularity theory which provides full asymptotic expansions around the branching sets.

Area minimising hypersurfaces mod $p$ do not admit immersed branch points

We show that area minimising hypersurfaces mod $p$ do not admit immersed branch points, namely branch points about which all classical singularities are immersed. Furthermore, we show that if an $n$-dimensional area minimising hypersurface mod $p$ is smoothly immersed outside a $\mathcal{H}^{n-1}$-null set, then it is in fact smoothly immersed outside a closed set of Hausdorff dimension at most $n-3$. These results are consequences of a more general analysis of immersed stable minimal hypersurfaces with a certain `alternating' orientation. Indeed, our proof does not rely on the minimising property other than through stationarity, stability, and the verification of simple structural properties of the hypersurface.

Quantitative Estimates on the Topology and Singular Set of Prescribed Mean Curvature Hypersurfaces

We establish quantitative topological and singularity properties for (certain) prescribed mean curvature (PMC) hypersurfaces $V^n$ in Riemannian manifolds $(N^{n+1},h)$. Indeed, if $V$ has area at most $A>0$ with PMC given by a $C^{1,\alpha}$ function $g:N\to \mathbb{R}$ with the bound $|g|_{C^{1,\alpha}}\leq \Gamma$, we show that there exists a constant $C$ depending only on $n,h,A,\Gamma$ and geometric quantities such that: \[\sum^n_{i=0}b^i(V) \leq C(1+\text{index}(V)) \quad \text{if }3\leq n+1\leq 7;\] \[M^{*n-7}(\text{sing}(V)) \leq C(1+\text{index}(V)) \quad \text{if }n+1\geq 8.\] Here, $b^i$ denote the Betti numbers over any field, $M^{*n-7}$ denotes the upper $(n-7)$-dimensional Minkowski content, and $\text{sing}(V)$ is the singular set of $V$. The first inequality extends the work of Song from the minimal hypersurface setting to the PMC hypersurface setting, whilst the second extends work of the authors. Our results apply to the PMC hypersurfaces constructed recently through min-max techniques by Bellettini--Wickramasekera.

Entire area-minimizing surfaces in R^4 are algebraic

We classify entire 2-dimensional area-minimizing or stable surfaces in R^4 with quadratic area growth as algebraic, cut out by a finite union of holomorphic polynomials whose collective degrees are controlled by the density at infinity. As a consequence, we obtain bounds on the singular set size and genus in terms of the density at infinity.

On the Nature of Stationary Integral Varifolds near Multiplicity 2 Planes

We study stationary integral $n$-varifolds $V$ in the unit ball $B_1(0)\subset\mathbb{R}^{n+k}$. Allard's regularity theorem establishes the existence of $\epsilon = \epsilon(n,k)\in (0,1)$ for which if $V$ is $\epsilon$-close (as varifolds) to the plane $P_0 = \{0\}^k\times\mathbb{R}^n$ with multiplicity 1 then, in $B_{1/2}(0)$, $V$ is represented by a single $C^{1,\alpha}$ minimal graph. However, when instead $P_0$ occurs with multiplicity $Q\in \{2,3,\dotsc\}$, simple examples show that this conclusion, now as a multi-valued graph, may fail, even if $V$ corresponds to an area-minimising rectifiable current. In the present work we investigate the structure of such $V$ which are close to planes with multiplicity $Q>1$, focusing primarily on the case $Q=2$. We show that an $\epsilon$-regularity theorem holds when $V$ is close, as a varifold, to $P_0$ with multiplicity $2$, provided $V$ satisfies a certain topological structural condition on the part of its support where the density of $V$ is $<2$. The conclusion then is that, in $B_{1/2}(0)$, $V$ is represented by the graph of a Lipschitz $2$-valued function over $P_0$ with small Lipschitz constant; in fact, the function is $C^{1,\alpha}$ in a precise generalised sense, and satisfies estimates, implying that all tangent cones at singular points in $B_{1/2}(0)$ are unique and comprised of stationary unions of $4$ half-planes (which may form a union of two distinct planes or a single multiplicity $2$ plane). The theorem does not require any additional assumption on the part of $V$ with density $\geq 2$ (which a priori may be a relatively large set in $\mathcal{H}^n$-measure with high topological complexity). As a corollary, we show that our $\epsilon$-regularity theorem applies unconditionally to stationary $2$-valued Lipschitz graphs with arbitrary Lipschitz constant, yielding improved regularity and uniform a priori estimates.

Rectifiability of the singular set and uniqueness of tangent cones for semicalibrated currents

We prove that the singular set of an $m$-dimensional integral current $T$ in $\mathbb{R}^{n + m}$, semicalibrated by a $C^{2, \kappa_0}$ $m$-form $\omega$ is countably $(m - 2)$-rectifiable. Furthermore, we show that there is a unique tangent cone at $\mathcal{H}^{m - 2}$-a.e. point in the interior singular set of $T$. Our proof adapts techniques that were recently developed in [DLS23a, DLS23b, DLMS23] for area-minimizing currents to this setting.

Fine Structure of Singularities in Area-Minimizing Currents Mod$(q)$

We study fine structural properties related to the interior regularity of $m$-dimensional area minimizing currents mod$(q)$ in arbitrary codimension. We show: (i) the set of points where at least one tangent cone is translation invariant along $m-1$ directions is locally a connected $C^{1,\beta}$ submanifold, and moreover such points have unique tangent cones; (ii) the remaining part of the singular set is countably $(m-2)$-rectifiable, with a unique flat tangent cone (with multiplicity) at $\mathcal{H}^{m-2}$-a.e. flat singular point. These results are consequences of fine excess decay theorems as well as almost monotonicity of a universal frequency function.

Uniqueness of Regular Tangent Cones for Immersed Stable Hypersurfaces

We establish uniqueness and regularity results for tangent cones (at a point or at infinity) with isolated singularities arising from a given immersed stable minimal hypersurface with suitably small (non-immersed) singular set. In particular, our results allow the tangent cone to occur with any integer multiplicity.

The Fine Structure of the Singular Set of Area-Minimizing Integral Currents III: Frequency 1 Flat Singular Points and $\mathcal{H}^{m-2}$-a.e. Uniqueness of Tangent Cones

We consider an area-minimizing integral current $T$ of codimension higher than 1 ins a smooth Riemannian manifold $\Sigma$. We prove that $T$ has a unique tangent cone, which is a superposition of planes, at $\mathcal{H}^{m-2}$-a.e. point in its support. In combination with works of the first and third authors, we conclude that the singular set of $T$ is countably $(m-2)$-rectifiable.

The Structure of Stable Codimension One Integral Varifolds near Classical Cones of Density $Q+1/2$

For each positive integer $Q\in\mathbb{Z}_{\geq 2}$, we prove a multi-valued $C^{1,\alpha}$ regularity theorem for varifolds in the class $\mathcal{S}_Q$, i.e., stable codimension one stationary integral $n$-varifolds which have no classical singularities of vertex density $<Q$, which are sufficiently close to a stationary integral cone comprised of $2Q+1$ half-hyperplanes (counted with multiplicity) meeting along a common axis. Such a result furthers the understanding of the local structure about singularities in the (possibly branched) varifolds in $\mathcal{S}_Q$ achieved by the author and N.~Wickramasekera (\cite{minterwick}) and generalises the authors' previous work in the case $Q=2$ (\cite{minter-5-2}) to arbitrary $Q\in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 2}$. One notable difference with previous works is that our methods do not need any a priori size restriction on the (density $Q$) branch set to rule out density gaps.

Quantitative Estimates on the Singular Set of Minimal Hypersurfaces with Bounded Index

We prove local measure bounds on the tubular neighbourhood of the singular set of codimension one stationary integral $n$-varifolds $V$ in Riemannian manifolds which have both: (i) finite index on their smoothly embedded part; and (ii) $\mathcal{H}^{n-1}$-null singular set. A direct consequence of such a bound is a bound on the upper Minkowski content of the singular set of such a varifold in terms of its total mass and its index. Such a result improves on known bounds, namely the corresponding bound on the $\mathcal{H}^{n-7}$-measure of the singular set established by A. Song ([10]), as well as the same bounds established by A. Naber and D. Valtorta ([6]) for codimension one area minimising currents. Our results also provide more structural information on the singular set for codimension one integral varifolds with finite index (on the regular part) and no classical singularities established by N. Wickramasekera ([11]).

A Structure Theory for Stable Codimension 1 Integral Varifolds with Applications to Area Minimising Hypersurfaces mod p

For any $Q\in\{\frac{3}{2},2,\frac{5}{2},3,\dotsc\}$, we establish a structure theory for the class $\mathcal{S}_Q$ of stable codimension 1 stationary integral varifolds admitting no classical singularities of density $<Q$. This theory comprises three main theorems which describe the nature of a varifold $V\in \mathcal{S}_Q$ when: (i) $V$ is close to a flat disk of multiplicity $Q$ (for integer $Q$); (ii) $V$ is close to a flat disk of integer multiplicity $<Q$; and (iii) $V$ is close to a stationary cone with vertex density $Q$ and support the union of 3 or more half-hyperplanes meeting along a common axis. The main new result concerns (i) and gives in particular a description of $V\in \mathcal{S}_Q$ near branch points of density $Q$. Results concerning (ii) and (iii) directly follow from parts of the work [Wic14] (and are reproduced in Part 2). These three theorems, taken with $Q=p/2$, are readily applicable to codimension 1 rectifiable area minimising currents mod $p$ for any integer $p\geq 2$, establishing local structure properties of such a current $T$ as consequences of little, readily checked, information. Specifically, applying case (i) it follows that, for even $p$, if $T$ has one tangent cone at an interior point $y$ equal to an (oriented) hyperplane $P$ of multiplicity $p/2$, then $P$ is the unique tangent cone at $y$, and $T$ near $y$ is given by the graph of a $\frac{p}{2}$-valued function with $C^{1,\alpha}$ regularity in a certain generalised sense. This settles a basic remaining open question in the study of the local structure of such currents near points with planar tangent cones, extending the cases $p=2$ and $p=4$ of the result which have been known since the 1970's from the De Giorgi--Allard regularity theory ([All72]) and the structure theory of White ([Whi79]) respectively.

A Campanato Regularity Theory for Multi-Valued Functions with Applications to Minimal Surface Regularity Theory

The regularity theory of the Campanato space $\mathcal{L}^{(q,\lambda)}_k(\Omega)$ has found many applications within the regularity theory of solutions to various geometric variational problems. Here we extend this theory from single-valued functions to multi-valued functions, adapting for the most part Campanato's original ideas (\cite{campanato}). We also give an application of this theory within the regularity theory of stationary integral varifolds. More precisely, we prove a regularity theorem for certain \textit{blow-up classes} of multi-valued functions, which typically arise when studying blow-ups of sequences of stationary integral varifolds converging to higher multiplicity planes or unions of half-planes. In such a setting, based in part on ideas in \cite{wickstable}, \cite{minterwick}, and \cite{beckerwick}, we are able to deduce a boundary regularity theory for multi-valued harmonic functions; such a boundary regularity result would appear to be the first of its kind for the multi-valued setting. In conjunction with \cite{minter}, the results presented here establish a regularity theorem for stable codimension one stationary integral varifolds near classical cones of density $\frac{5}{2}$.

The Structure of Stable Codimension One Integral Varifolds near Classical Cones of Density 5/2

We prove a multi-valued $C^{1,\alpha}$ regularity theorem for the varifolds in the class $\mathcal{S}_2$ (i.e., stable codimension one stationary integral $n$-varifolds admitting no triple junction classical singularities) which are sufficiently close to a stationary integral cone comprised of 5 half-hyperplanes (counted with multiplicity) meeting along a common axis. Such a result is the first of its kind for non-flat cones of higher (i.e. $>1$) multiplicity when branch points are present in the nearby varifolds. For such varifolds, this completes the analysis of the singular set in the region where the density is $<3$, up to a set which is countably $(n-2)$-rectifiable. Our methods develop the blow-up arguments in \cite{simoncylindrical} and \cite{wickstable}. One key new ingredient of our work is needing to inductively perform successively finer blow-up procedures in order to show that a certain $\epsilon$-regularity property holds at the blow-up level; this is then used to prove a $C^{1,\alpha}$ boundary regularity theory for two-valued $C^{1,\alpha}$ harmonic functions which arise as blow-ups of sequences of such varifolds, the argument for which is carried out in the accompanying work \cite{minter2021}.
