Probing for primordial black hole candidates in exoplanet search data

We have sifted through astrophysical data collected by various radial velocity and gravitational microlensing searches for exoplanets with the goal of identifying potential signs of the presence of primordial black holes (PBH). Our motivation is that those hypothesized remnants of inhomogeneous energetic fluctuations in the early universe, though too small for direct detection, are thought to have a mass range similar to that of planets. Thereby, if captured by stars, they could conceivably make their presence known through stellar wobbles picked up by means of Doppler spectroscopy in the radial velocity method, or alternatively through microlensing. In our analysis of such data, we have identified potential PBH contenders by ruling out any exoplanet candidates that have been detected through direct imaging or transit methods, as they would have sizes consistent with planets rather than PBHs. In particular we focus on the objects Kepler-21 Ac, HD 219134 f, Gliese 686 b, HR 5183 b, HD 20794 e, and Wolf 1061 d, each of which has been found using the radial velocity method but never imaged (either directly or through transit). We also examine the microlensing events MOA 2009-BLG-387L and OGLE-2016-BLG-1540, which offer promise as candidate PBHs. We present these as a representative, but not exclusive list, of potential PBH contenders. Furthermore, future imaging, especially focused on signals of planetary dimensions versus evaporation signatures, might clarify which of these are indeed exoplanets.

Energy conditions in a modified Brans-Dicke theory

We consider a modified version of Brans-Dicke theory (MBDT) in four dimensions obtained by applying the induced matter method of Wesson to a 5D generalized Brans-Dicke theory. In 5D the model consists of pure vacuum, with no self-interacting potential, except for a scalar field. Constraining the 5D geometry to be a generalization of the anisotropic Bianchi type I universe model first studied by Kasner, we derive the induced energy-momentum. We discuss the energy conditions and their bounds in the MBDT with such an induced imperfect fluid, with an eye toward a realistic model of the present-day universe, and consider the large-scale behavior of that spatially homogeneous and anisotropic model. We discuss how the energy conditions would be satisfied or violated in the context of MBDT, with the aim of providing a feasible description of the universe in the current era.

The Localized Energy Distribution of Dark Energy Star Solutions

We examine the question of energy localization for an exact solution of Einstein's equations with a scalar field corresponding to the phantom energy interpretation of dark energy. We apply three different energy-momentum complexes, the Einstein, Papapetrou and Møller prescriptions, to the exterior metric and determine the energy distribution for each. Comparing the results, we find that the three prescriptions yield identical energy distributions.

Energy Distribution of a Charged Black Hole with a Minimally Coupled Scalar Field

Using three different energy-momentum complexes, the Einstein, Landau-Lifshitz, and Papapetrou prescriptions, we calculate the energy of an electrically charged black hole exact solution with a self-interacting, minimally-coupled scalar field and the asymptotic region locally an Anti-deSitter spacetime. Writing the metric in Kerr-Schild Cartesian coordinates, we demonstrate that this metric belongs to the Kerr-Schild class of solutions. Applying each of the three energy-momentum prescriptions and comparing the results, we find consistency among these complexes, suggesting their utility as localized measures of energy.

Energy of the Taub Cosmological Solution

We calculate the total energy of Taub's 1951 exact solution for a Bianchi type IX geometry using several different energy-localization procedures, including the prescriptions of Einstein, Papapetrou, Landau-Lifshitz and Moller. We compare these results to those for other anisotropic geometries, and comment on their relationship to Rosen's conjecture about the total energy of the universe.

Energy Distribution of Black Plane Solutions

We use the Einstein energy-momentum complex to calculate the energy distribution of static plane-symmetric solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations in 3+1 dimensions with asymptotic anti-de Sitter behavior. This solution is expressed in terms of three parameters: the mass, electric charge and cosmological constant. We compare the energy distribution to that of the Reissner-Nordstrom-anti-de Sitter solution, pointing to qualitative differences between the models. Finally, we examine these results within the context of the Cooperstock hypothesis.

The Mixmaster Universe in Five Dimensions

We consider a five dimensional vacuum cosmology with Bianchi type-IX spatial geometry and an extra non-compact coordinate. Finding a new class of solutions, we examine and rule out the possibility of deterministic chaos. We interpret this result within the context of induced matter theory.

Exact Solutions of Five Dimensional Anisotropic Cosmologies

We solve the five dimensional vacuum Einstein equations for several kinds of anisotropic geometries. We consider metrics in which the spatial slices are characterized as Bianchi types-II and V, and the scale factors are dependent both on time and a non-compact fifth coordinate. We examine the behavior of the solutions we find, noting for which parameters they exhibit contraction over time of the fifth scale factor, leading naturally to dimensional reduction. We explore these within the context of the induced matter model: a Kaluza-Klein approach that associates the extra geometric terms due to the fifth coordinate with contributions to the four dimensional stress-energy tensor.

The Behavior of Kasner Cosmologies with Induced Matter

We extend the induced matter model, previously applied to a variety of isotropic cases, to a generalization of Bianchi type-I anisotropic cosmologies. The induced matter model is a 5D Kaluza-Klein approach in which assumptions of compactness are relaxed for the fifth coordinate, leading to extra geometric terms. One interpretation of these extra terms is to identify them as an ``induced matter'' contribution to the stress-energy tensor. In similar spirit, we construct a five dimensional metric in which the spatial slices possess Bianchi type-I geometry. We find a set of solutions for the five dimensional Einstein equations, and determine the pressure and density of induced matter. We comment on the long-term dynamics of the model, showing that the assumption of positive density leads to the contraction over time of the fifth scale factor.
