Effective Field Theory of Noncritical M-theory from Bosonization

We extend the coadjoint orbit approach to bosonization systematized by Delacretaz-Du-Mehta-Son to double-scaled non-relativistic Fermi liquids with central inverted harmonic oscillator potential. In 1+1d, this reproduces the Das-Jevicki collective field theory describing quasiparticle excitations of the $c=1$ matrix model. In 2+1d, this yields an effective field theory for noncritical M-theory, namely the 2+1d Fermi liquid proposed by Ho\v{r}ava and Keeler as a unified framework for characterizing noncritical string vacua. With a suitable gauge choice this theory reduces to a continuous family of 1+1d chiral bosons resembling Das-Jevicki collective fields coupled by additional interactions. Utilizing the underlying integrability of noncritical M-theory, we compute select fermion density correlation functions order-by-order in perturbation theory, and provide evidence that they agree with their Fermi liquid counterparts in a suitable semiclassical limit. This represents a step toward an effective spacetime gravity description of noncritical M-theory, which we expect to shed light on both the landscape of 2d noncritical strings and 3d quantum gravity in general.

Symmetry Operators and Gravity

We argue that topological operators for continuous symmetries written in terms of currents need regularization, which effectively gives them a small but finite width. The regulated operator is a finite tension object which fluctuates. In the zero-width limit these fluctuations freeze, recovering the properties of a topological operator. When gravity is turned on, the zero-width limit becomes ill-defined, thereby prohibiting the existence of topological operators.

Phase space of Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity with positive cosmological constant

In this paper we construct the classical phase space of Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity with positive cosmological constant on spatial slices with circle topology. This turns out to be somewhat more intricate than in the case of negative cosmological constant; this phase space has many singular points and is not even Hausdorff. Nonetheless, it admits a group-theoretic description which is quite amenable to quantization.

Intersection Theory on Weighted Blowups of F-theory Vacua

Generalizing the results of 1211.6077 and 1703.00905, we prove a formula for the pushforward of an arbitrary analytic function of the exceptional divisor class of a weighted blowup of an algebraic variety centered at a smooth complete intersection with normal crossing. We check this formula extensively by computing the generating function of intersection numbers of a weighted blowup of the generic SU(5) Tate model over arbitrary smooth base, and comparing the answer to known results. Motivated by applications to four-dimensional F-theory flux compactifications, we use our formula to compute the intersection pairing on the vertical part of the middle cohomology of elliptic Calabi-Yau 4-folds resolving the generic F$_4$ and Sp(6) Tate models with non-minimal singularities. These resolutions lead to non-flat fibrations in which certain fibers contain 3-fold (divisor) components, whose physical interpretation in M/F-theory remains to be fully explored.

On the intermediate Jacobian of M5-branes

We study Euclidean M5-branes wrapping vertical divisors in elliptic Calabi-Yau fourfold compactifications of M/F-theory that admit a Sen limit. We construct these Calabi-Yau fourfolds as elliptic fibrations over coordinate flip O3/O7 orientifolds of toric hypersurface Calabi-Yau threefolds. We devise a method to analyze the Hodge structure (and hence the dimension of the intermediate Jacobian) of vertical divisors in these fourfolds, using only the data available from a type IIB compactification on the O3/O7 Calabi-Yau orientifold. Our method utilizes simple combinatorial formulae (that we prove) for the equivariant Hodge numbers of the Calabi-Yau orientifolds and their prime toric divisors, along with a formula for the Euler characteristic of vertical divisors in the corresponding elliptic Calabi-Yau fourfold. Our formula for the Euler characteristic includes a conjectured correction term that accounts for the contributions of pointlike terminal $\mathbb{Z}_2$ singularities corresponding to perturbative O3-planes. We check our conjecture in a number of explicit examples and find perfect agreement with the results of direct computations.

Chiral matter multiplicities and resolution-independent structure in 4D F-theory models

Motivated by questions related to the landscape of flux compactifications, we combine new and existing techniques into a systematic, streamlined approach for computing vertical fluxes and chiral matter multiplicities in 4D F-theory models. A central feature of our approach is the conjecturally resolution-independent intersection pairing of the vertical part of the integer middle cohomology of smooth elliptic CY fourfolds, relevant for computing chiral indices and related aspects of 4D F-theory flux vacua. We illustrate our approach by analyzing vertical flux backgrounds for F-theory models with simple, simply-laced gauge groups and generic matter content, as well as models with U(1) gauge factors. We explicitly analyze resolutions of these F-theory models in which the elliptic fiber is realized as a cubic in $\mathbb P^2$ over an arbitrary (e.g., not necessarily toric) smooth base, and confirm the resolution-independence of the intersection pairing of the vertical part of the middle cohomology. In each model we study, we find that vertical flux backgrounds can produce nonzero multiplicities for all anomaly-free chiral matter field combinations, suggesting that F-theory geometry imposes no additional linear constraints beyond those implied by anomaly cancellation.

Chiral spectrum of the universal tuned $(\text{SU}(3) \times \text{SU}(2) \times \text{U}(1))/\mathbb{Z}_{6}$ 4D F-theory model

We use the recently developed methods of 2108.07810 to analyze vertical flux backgrounds and associated chiral matter spectra in the 4D universal $(\text{SU}(3) \times \text{SU}(2) \times \text{U}(1))/\mathbb{Z}_{6}$ model introduced in 1912.10991, which is believed to describe the most general generic family of F-theory vacua with tuned $(\text{SU}(3) \times \text{SU}(2) \times \text{U(}1))/\mathbb{Z}_{6}$ gauge symmetry. Our analysis focuses on a resolution of a particular presentation of the $(\text{SU}(3) \times \text{SU}(2) \times \text{U}(1))/\mathbb{Z}_{6}$ model in which the elliptic fiber is realized as a cubic in $\mathbb{P}^2$ fibered over an arbitrary smooth threefold base. We show that vertical fluxes can produce nonzero multiplicities for all chiral matter families that satisfy 4D anomaly cancellation, which include as a special case the chiral matter families of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model.

Generating functions for intersection products of divisors in resolved F-theory models

Building on the approach of 1703.00905, we present an efficient algorithm for computing topological intersection numbers of divisors in a broad class of elliptic fibrations with the aid of a symbolic computing tool. A key part of our strategy is organizing the intersection products of divisors into a succinct analytic generating function, namely the exponential of the Kähler class. We use the methods of 1703.00905 to compute the pushforward of this function to the base of the elliptic fibration. We implement our algorithm in an accompanying Mathematica package IntersectionNumbers.m that computes generating functions of intersection products for resolutions of F-theory Tate models defined over smooth base of arbitrary complex dimension. Our algorithm appears to offer a significant reduction in computation time needed to compute intersection numbers as compared to previously explored implementations of the methods in 1703.00905; as an illustration, we explicitly compute the generating functions for all F-theory Tate models with simple classical groups of rank up to twenty and highlight the growth of the computation time with the rank of the group.

Twisted Circle Compactifications of 6d SCFTs

We study 6d superconformal field theories (SCFTs) compactified on a circle with arbitrary twists. The theories obtained after compactification, often referred to as 5d Kaluza-Klein (KK) theories, can be viewed as starting points for RG flows to 5d SCFTs. According to a conjecture, all 5d SCFTs can be obtained in this fashion. We compute the Coulomb branch prepotential for all 5d KK theories obtainable in this manner and associate to these theories a smooth local genus one fibered Calabi-Yau threefold in which is encoded information about all possible RG flows to 5d SCFTs. These Calabi-Yau threefolds provide hitherto unknown M-theory duals of F-theory configurations compactified on a circle with twists. For certain exceptional KK theories that do not admit a standard geometric description we propose an algebraic description that appears to retain the properties of the local Calabi-Yau threefolds necessary to determine RG flows to 5d SCFTs, along with other relevant physical data.

USp(4)-models

We study the geometry of elliptic fibrations satisfying the conditions of Step 2 of Tate's algorithm with a discriminant of valuation 4. We call such geometries USp(4)-models, as the dual graph of their special fiber is the twisted affine Dynkin diagram of type C$_2$. These geometries are used in string theory to model gauge theories with the non-simply-laced Lie group USp(4) on a smooth divisor S of the base. Starting with a singular Weierstrass model of a USp(4)-model, we present a crepant resolution of its singularities. We study the fiber structure of this smooth elliptic fibration and identify the fibral divisors up to isomorphism as schemes over S. These are P1-bundles over S or double covers of P1-bundles over S. We compute basic topological invariants such as the triple intersections of the fibral divisors and the Euler characteristic of the USp(4)-model. In the case of Calabi-Yau threefolds, we also compute the Hodge numbers. We study the compactfications of M/F theory on a USp(4)-model Calabi-Yau threefold.

Classifying 5d SCFTs via 6d SCFTs: Arbitrary rank

According to a conjecture, all 5d SCFTs should be obtainable by rank-preserving RG flows of 6d SCFTs compactified on a circle possibly twisted by a background for the discrete global symmetries around the circle. For a 6d SCFT admitting an F-theory construction, its untwisted compactification admits a dual M-theory description in terms of a "parent" Calabi-Yau threefold which captures the Coulomb branch of the compactified 6d SCFT. The RG flows to 5d SCFTs can then be identified with a sequence of flop transitions and blowdowns of the parent Calabi-Yau leading to "descendant" Calabi-Yau threefolds which describe the Coulomb branches of the resulting 5d SCFTs. An explicit description of parent Calabi-Yaus is known for untwisted compactifications of rank one 6d SCFTs. In this paper, we provide a description of parent Calabi-Yaus for untwisted compactifications of arbitrary rank 6d SCFTs. Since 6d SCFTs of arbitrary rank can be viewed as being constructed out of rank one SCFTs, we accomplish the extension to arbitrary rank by identifying a prescription for gluing together Calabi-Yaus associated to rank one 6d SCFTs.

Classifying 5d SCFTs via 6d SCFTs: Rank one

Following a recent proposal, we delineate a general procedure to classify 5d SCFTs via compactifications of 6d SCFTs on a circle (possibly with a twist by a discrete global symmetry). The path from 6d SCFTs to 5d SCFTs can be divided into two steps. The first step involves computing the Coulomb branch data of the 5d KK theory obtained by compactifying a 6d SCFT on a circle of finite radius. The second step involves computing the limit of the KK theory when the inverse radius along with some other mass parameters is sent to infinity. Under this RG flow, the KK theory reduces to a 5d SCFT. We illustrate these ideas in the case of untwisted compactifications of rank one 6d SCFTs that can be constructed in F-theory without frozen singularities. The data of the corresponding KK theory can be packaged in the geometry of a Calabi-Yau threefold that we explicitly compute for every case. The RG flows correspond to flopping a collection of curves in the threefold and we formulate a concrete set of criteria which can be used to determine which collection of curves can induce the relevant RG flows, and, in principle, to determine the Calabi-Yau geometries describing the endpoints of these flows. We also comment on how to generalize our results to arbitrary rank.

Euler Characteristics of Crepant Resolutions of Weierstrass Models

Based on an identity of Jacobi, we prove a simple formula that computes the pushforward of analytic functions of the exceptional divisor of a blowup of a projective variety along a smooth complete intersection with normal crossing. We apply this pushforward formula to derive generating functions for Euler characteristics of crepant resolutions of singular Weierstrass models given by Tate's algorithm. Since these Euler characteristics depend only on the sequence of blowups and not on the Kodaira fiber itself, nor the associated group, several distinct Tate models have the same Euler characteristic. In the case of elliptic Calabi-Yau threefolds, we also compute the Hodge numbers. For elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau fourfolds, our results also prove a conjecture of Blumenhagen-Grimm-Jurke-Weigand based on F-theory/heterotic string duality.

The Geometry of SO(3), SO(5), and SO(6) models

SO(3), SO(5), and SO(6)-models are singular elliptic fibrations with Mordell--Weil torsion Z/2Z and singular fibers whose dual fibers correspond to affine Dynkin diagrams of type A1, C2, and A3 respectively, where we emphasize the distinction between SO(n) and its universal cover Spin(n). While the SO(3)-model has been studied before, the SO(5) and SO(6)-models are studied here for the first time. By computing crepant resolutions of their Weierstrass models, we study their fiber structures and topological invariants. In the special case that the SO(n)-model is an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefold, we compute the Chern-Simons couplings and matter content of a 5D N=1 supergravity theory with gauge group SO(n), which is related to M-theory compactified on this Calabi-Yau threefold. We also verify the 6D lift of the 5D matter content is necessary and sufficient for anomaly cancellation in 6D (1,0) supergravity theories geometrically engineered by F-theory compactified on the same threefold. We find that the associated 5D and 6D supergravity theories with SO(n) gauge symmetry indeed differ from their Spin(n) cousins, with one striking consequence of this distinction being that all such theories must include adjoint matter.

SCFTs, Holography, and Topological Strings

We show that the non-gravitational sectors of certain 6d and 5d supergravity theories can be decomposed into superconformal field theories (SCFTs) which are coupled together by pairwise identifying and gauging mutual global symmetries. In the case of 6d supergravity, we consider F-theory on compact elliptic Calabi-Yau 3-folds with base $B=T^4/\mathbb{Z}_n\times \mathbb{Z}_m$ and we show in many examples that the non-gravitational field theory sectors can be described as configurations of coupled 6d $(1,0)$ SCFTs. We also conjecture that the effective 2d $(0,4)$ SCFTs living on the self-dual strings of the 6d theories lead to holographically dual descriptions of type IIB string theory on $AdS_3\times S^3\times B$ and moreover that their elliptic genera can be used to compute the degeneracies of 5d spinning BPS black holes along with all-genus topological string amplitudes on the corresponding compact 3-fold. In the case of 5d supergravity, we consider M-theory on compact Calabi-Yau 3-folds and using similar ideas as in the 6d case we show the complete non-gravitational sector of 5d supergravity theories can be decomposed into coupled 5d $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFTs. Furthermore, using this picture we propose a generalized topological vertex formalism which, excluding some curve classes, seems to capture all-genus topological string amplitudes for the mirror quintic.

On Geometric Classification of 5d SCFTs

We formulate geometric conditions necessary for engineering 5d superconformal field theories (SCFTs) via M-theory compactification on a local Calabi-Yau 3-fold. Extending the classification of the rank 1 cases, which are realized geometrically as shrinking del Pezzo surfaces embedded in a 3-fold, we propose an exhaustive classification of local 3-folds engineering rank 2 SCFTs in 5d. This systematic classification confirms that all rank 2 SCFTs predicted using gauge theoretic arguments can be realized as consistent theories, with the exception of one family which is shown to be non-perturbatively inconsistent and thereby ruled out by geometric considerations. We find that all rank 2 SCFTs descend from 6d (1,0) SCFTs compactified on a circle possibly twisted with an automorphism together with holonomies for global symmetries around the Kaluza-Klein circle. These results support our conjecture that every 5d SCFT can be obtained from the circle compactification of some parent 6d (1,0) SCFT.

Towards Classification of 5d SCFTs: Single Gauge Node

We propose a number of apparently equivalent criteria necessary for the consistency of a 5d SCFT in its Coulomb phase and use these criteria to classify 5d SCFTs arising from a gauge theory with simple gauge group. These criteria include the convergence of the 5-sphere partition function; the positivity of particle masses and monopole string tensions; and the positive definiteness of the metric in some region in the Coulomb branch. We find that for large rank classical groups simple classes of SCFTs emerge where the bounds on the matter content and the Chern-Simons level grow linearly with rank. For classical groups of rank less than or equal to 8, our classification leads to additional cases which do not fit in the large rank analysis. We also classify the allowed matter content for all exceptional groups.

The Geometry of F$_4$-Models

We study the geometry of elliptic fibrations satisfying the conditions of Step 8 of Tate's algorithm. We call such geometries F$_4$-models, as the dual graph of their special fiber is the twisted affine Dynkin diagram $\widetilde{\text{F}}_4^t$. These geometries are used in string theory to model gauge theories with the exceptional Lie group F$_4$ on a smooth divisor $S$ of the base. Starting with a singular Weierstrass model of an F$_4$-model, we present a crepant resolution of its singularities. We study the fiber structure of this smooth elliptic fibration and identify the fibral divisors up to isomorphism as schemes over $S$. These are $\mathbb{P}^1$-bundles over $S$ or double covers of $\mathbb{P}^1$-bundles over $S$. We compute basic topological invariants such as the double and triple intersection numbers of the fibral divisors and the Euler characteristic of the F$_4$-model. In the case of Calabi-Yau threefolds, we compute the linear form induced by the second Chern class and the Hodge numbers. We also explore the meaning of these geometries for the physics of gauge theories in five and six-dimensional minimal supergravity theories with eight supercharges. We also introduce the notion of "frozen representations" and explore the role of the Stein factorization in the study of fibral divisors of elliptic fibrations.
