Fermi gas of domain-wall Skyrmions in QCD in a strong magnetic field

Fermionic domain-wall Skyrmions arise in the chiral soliton lattice of two flavor chiral perturbation theory in a magnetic field as the ground state and are associated with baryons of the underlying theory of quantum chromodynamics. We analyze the electromagnetic screening characteristics of domain-wall Skyrmions that give insight into baryon density on the magnetic field and chemical potential phase diagram. At zero temperature, using the moduli effective theory, it is found Skyrmion density is saturated up to the Fermi momenta on the disk of the chiral soliton lattice orthogonal to the magnetic field. We further study chiral perturbation theory coupled to quantum electrodynamics leading to finite temperature screening, wherein a static fermionic domain-wall Skyrmion screening is predicted through a combined Debye mass/length.

Scattering in strong field QED in a non-null background

We examine scattering amplitudes for an arbitrary number of photons in a class of non-null background electromagnetic fields, studying tree-level and one-loop amplitudes in scalar and spinor quantum-electrodynamics in backgrounds defined by a gauge field $A_{\mu}(\mathfrak{n}\cdot x)$ for $\mathfrak{n}^2\neq 0$. Motivated to account for more physically realistic laser-plasma dispersive properties, our approach overcomes prior work studying such amplitudes in a constant background field and relaxes the familiar null criterion assumed for plane waves. Master Formulae for the $N$-photon amplitudes dressed by the non-null background are constructed using the first-quantised worldline formalism, which can systematically account for all orders in the non-null parameter, $\mathfrak{n}^2$, treated here as an expansion parameter. These are derived from worldline representations of the coordinate and momentum space propagators (and their LSZ-truncated amplitudes) and the effective action, each incorporating the non-null background non-perturbatively. We then outline a partial resummation of their expansions in $\mathfrak{n}^{2}$. A special exactly solvable case of non-null constant crossed fields without photon insertion in the effective action is explored to test the Master Formulae that result. The validity of the presented master formulae is further checked against known expressions for the wavefunction and non-linear Compton scattering in a non-null background to lowest order in the non-null parameter.

Fermionic domain-wall Skyrmions of QCD in a magnetic field

The ground state of low-energy QCD matter in strong magnetic fields is either a chiral soliton lattice (CSL), a periodic array of neutral pion domain walls (chiral solitons) perpendicular to the magnetic field, or domain-wall Skyrmion phase, in which Skyrmions are induced on top of the CSL. Previously found domain-wall Skyrmions are bosons with the baryon number two. In this paper, we show that the minimum domain-wall Skyrmions are fermions with baryon number one; a bosonic domain-wall Skyrmion can be separated without energy cost into two fermionic domain-wall Skyrmions attached on the opposite sides of a chiral soliton. The phase boundary between the CSL and domain-wall Skyrmion phases is unchanged. In the chiral limit, the CSL reduces to a linearly dependent neutral pion on the direction of the magnetic field, while fermionic domain-wall Skyrmions sit in an equal distance of half a period.

In-in worldline formalism in pair creating fields

An in-in framework under Schwinger pair creating fields in strong-field quantum electrodynamics is formulated using in-out propagators in coordinate space, that have first-quantized or worldline representation. The framework is derived to all orders in the background field coupling from both the Bogoliubov coefficient method and Schwinger-Keldysh closed-time path formalism. In-out matrix elements in pair creating fields are readily handled using first-quantized methods, and the approach we develop serves to facilitate the evaluation of in-in observables in pair creating backgrounds. We find that in-in augmentations to the in-out partition function and or propagator amount to the insertion of a non-local interaction term that sandwiches a function that receives contributions from singularities and critical points in complex Schwinger propertime. Furthermore, we show the resummation of the in-in partition function leading to vacuum non-persistence that en-route gives an exact first-quantized definition of creating $N$-pairs.

Worldline Modeling of Ultra-Intense Lasers for N-photon Scattering Processes

The modeling of present and future ultra-intense lasers demands techniques that go beyond the standard diagrammatic approach to non-perturbatively fully capture the effects of strong fields. We illustrate the first-quantized path integral representation for strong-field quantum electrodynamics as a means of accessing the laser being treated as a background field, which is treated without recourse to perturbation theory. We examine an all-multiplicity construction for $N-$photon scattering processes for complex scalars and spinors, showing compact Master Formulae for tree-level scattering. Several background fields are considering including: plane waves, impulsive PP-waves, non-null fields, and homogeneous fields (constant-crossed fields) with low-energy external photons.

Low-energy multi-photon scattering at tree-level and one-loop order in a homogeneous electromagnetic field

We study low energy photons coupled to scalar and spinor matter in the presence of an arbitrary homogeneous electromagnetic field in a first-quantised (worldline) approach. Utilising a Fock-Schwinger gauge for both the scattering photons and homogeneous background, simple compact expressions are found for both the photon- and background-dressed effective action and propagator in scalar and spinor quantum electrodynamics. The low-energy limit allows identification of the coupling of the scattering photons as one of an effective homogeneous superposition of their field strengths, with amplitudes following from application of a suitable linearisation operator. To treat the linearisation, several techniques are employed, including a functional expansion based on the proper time formalism and worldline Green functions, linearised vertex operators under a worldline path integral, and a matrix expansion in the field strengths. We find, in particular, that a replacement rule converting scalar amplitudes to spinor amplitudes at one-loop order can, surprisingly, be extended to tree level amplitudes in the low energy limit. Finally, we discuss a novel worldline representation of the momentum space matter propagators, obtaining a suitable worldline Green function for this path integral satisfying homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions and momentum space vertex operators representing the scattering photons already in momentum space.

Pair creation, backreaction, and resummation in strong fields

We revisit particle creation in strong fields, and backreaction on those fields, from an amplitudes perspective. We describe the strong field by an initial coherent state of photons which we explicitly evolve in time, thus going beyond the background field approximation, and then consider observables which quantify the effects of backreaction. We present expressions for the waveform, vacuum persistence probability, and number of produced photons at next-to-leading order, all of which are impacted by backreaction, along with the number and statistics of produced pairs. We find that converting between in-out (amplitude) and in-in (expectation value) expressions requires explicit resummation of an infinite number of disconnected loop diagrams.

All-multiplicity amplitudes in impulsive PP-waves from the worldline formalism

We use the worldline formalism to derive Bern-Kosower type Master Formulae for the tree-level scattering of a charged particle and an arbitrary number of photons on impulsive PP-waves, where the coupling of the PP-wave to matter is treated fully non-perturbatively. We show that, in a certain kinematic regime characterised by a semi-classical positive energy condition, both off-shell currents and scattering amplitudes exhibit two novel factorisation structures. First, they may be written as currents in vacuum but with a single additional photon, averaged over the momentum of that photon. This converts the all-orders interaction with the PP-wave into a single effective interaction. Second, the currents and amplitudes may be written as a weighted average of the corresponding quantities in an impulsive plane wave background, with the average taken over all possible field strengths of the plane wave. This generalises a known single-photon result to arbitrary multiplicity.

Master Formulae for $N$-photon tree level amplitudes in plane wave backgrounds

The presence of strong electromagnetic fields adds huge complexity to QED Feynman diagrams, such that new methods are required to calculate higher-loop and higher-multiplicity scattering amplitudes. Here we use the worldline formalism to present `Master Formulae' for all tree level amplitudes of two massive particles and an arbitrary number of photons, in a plane wave background, in both scalar and spinor QED. The plane wave is treated without approximation throughout, meaning in particular that our formulae are valid in the strong-field regime of current theoretical and experimental interest. We check our results against literature expressions obtainable at low multiplicity via direct Feynman diagram calculations.

Emergent spacetime from a Berry-inspired dynamical gauge field coupled to electromagnetism

Motivated by the fermionic Berry's phase in momentum space, we study a local Abelian phase in momentum space coupled to electromagnetism, for complex scalars in the phase-space worldline formalism. The interaction of both Abelian fields is shown to give rise to a momentum gauge dependent emergent spacetime. As a concrete example, we further study classical solutions of the Berry-inspired gauge field that lead to an emergent Newtonian gravity with gravitational potential predicted by coupled Coulomb fields both in configuration and momentum spaces. Noncommutative aspects of the theory are also provided.

Curvature-induced pseudogauge fields from time-dependent geometries in graphene

The massless Dirac equation is studied in curved spacetime on the (2+1)-dimensional graphene sheet in time-dependent geometries. Emergent pseudogauge fields are found both in the adiabatic regime and, for high-frequency periodic geometries, in the nonadiabatic regime for a generic Friedmann-Lema\^itre-Robertson-Walker metric in Fermi normal coordinates. The former extends the conventionally understood homogeneous pseudogauge field to include weak temporal inhomogeneities. The latter, through the usage of Floquet theory, represents a new class of emergent pseudogauge field and is argued to potentially provide a condensed matter realization of cosmological high-frequency geometries.

Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangian under an axial gauge field

Augmentations to the Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangian (QED one-loop effective action in homogeneous electromagnetic fields) under a constant background axial gauge are examined. Two special configurations admit an exact eigendecomposition, and hence effective action as a spectral sum, of the augmented Dirac operator: one with a magnetic field with chiral chemical potential, and the other with an electric field with spatial axial gauge, which resembles an emergent vorticity. An enhancement to Schwinger pair production is found for the latter, which is more fully analyzed using the worldline instanton formalism. There it is found the overall enhancement is due to the spatial axial gauge serving as a negative mass shift. Finally, we remark on the exactly solvable massless case for arbitrary electromagnetic and axial gauges.

Angular Momentum Inheritance from the Schwinger Effect in (Chromo)electromagnetic Fields

The angular momentum of fermion pairs generated by the Schwinger effect is studied in homogeneous (chromo)electromagnetic fields, mimicking the early stages of a heavy-ion collision. It is demonstrated that the angular momentum density of produced pairs is proportional to that of the background fields. This is argued both heuristically in a virtual breaking condensate model by evaluating Wong's equations, and out-of-equilibrium to one-loop using the in-in formalism.

Berry phase in the phase space worldline representation: the axial anomaly and classical kinetic theory

The Berry phase is analyzed for Weyl and Dirac fermions in a phase space representation of the worldline formalism. Kinetic theories are constructed for both at a classical level. Whereas the Weyl fermion case reduces in dimension, resembling a theory in quantum mechanics, the Dirac fermion case takes on a manifestly Lorentz covariant form. To achieve a classical kinetic theory for the non-Abelian Dirac fermion Berry phase a spinor construction of Barut and Zanghi is utilized. The axial anomaly is also studied at a quantum level. It is found that under an adiabatic approximation, which is necessary for facilitating a classical kinetic theory, the index of the Dirac operator for massless fermions vanishes. Even so, similarities of an axial rotation to an exact non-covariant Berry phase transform are drawn by application of the Fujikawa method to the Barut and Zanghi spinors on the worldline.

Schwinger Pair Production in SL$(2,\mathbb{C})$ Topologically Non-Trivial Fields via Non-Abelian Worldline Instantons

Schwinger pair production is analyzed in a BPST instanton background and in its SL$(2,\mathbb{C})$ complex extension for complex scalar particles. A non-Abelian extension of the worldline instanton method is utilized, wherein Wong's equations in a coherent state picture adopted for SL$(2,\mathbb{C})$ are solved in Euclidean spacetime. While pair production is not predicted in the BPST instanton, a complex extension of the BPST instanton, existing as parallel fields in Minkowski spacetime, is shown to decay via the Schwinger effect.

Chirality Production with Mass Effects-Schwinger Pair Production and the Axial Ward Identity

The anomalous generation of chirality with mass effects via the axial Ward identity and its dependence on the Schwinger mechanism is reviewed, utilizing parity violating homogeneous electromagnetic background fields. The role vacuum asymptotic states play on the interpretation of expectation values is examined. It is discussed that observables calculated with an in-out scattering matrix element predict a scenario under Euclidean equilibrium. A notable ramification of which is a vanishing of the chiral anomaly. In contrast, it is discussed observables calculated under an in-in, or real-time, formalism predict a scenario out-of equilibrium, and capture effects of mean produced particle anti-particle pairs due to the Schwinger mechanism. The out-of equilibrium chiral anomaly is supplemented with exponential quadratic mass suppression as anticipated for the Schwinger mechanism. Similar behavior in and out-of equilibrium is reviewed for applications including the chiral magnetic effect and chiral condensate.

Anomalous magnetohydrodynamics with constant anisotropic electric conductivities

We study anomalous magnetohydrodynamics in a longitudinal boost invariant Bjorken flow with constant anisotropic electric conductivities as outlined in Ref. [1]. For simplicity, we consider a neutral fluid and a force-free magnetic field in the transverse direction. We derived analytic solutions of the electromagnetic fields in the laboratory frame, the chiral density, and the energy density as functions of proper time.

Axial Ward identity and the Schwinger mechanism -- Applications to the real-time chiral magnetic effect and condensates

We elucidate chirality production under parity breaking constant electromagnetic fields, with which we clarify qualitative differences in and out of equilibrium. For a strong magnetic field the pair production from the Schwinger mechanism increments the chirality. The pair production rate is exponentially suppressed with mass according to the Schwinger formula, while the mass dependence of chirality production in the axial Ward identity appears in the pesudo-scalar term. We demonstrate that in equilibrium field theory calculus the axial anomaly is canceled by the pseudo-scalar condensate for any mass. In a real-time formulation with in- and out-states, we show that the axial Ward identity leads to the chirality production rate consistent with the Schwinger formula. We illuminate that such an in- and out-states formulation makes clear the chiral magnetic effect in and out of equilibrium, and we discuss further applications to real-time condensates.
