Deterministic Mechanical Wigner Negativity via Nonlinear Cavity Quantum Optomechanics in the Unresolved-Sideband Regime

Non-Gaussian quantum states of mechanical motion exhibiting Wigner negativity offer promising capabilities for quantum technologies and tests of fundamental physics. Within the field of cavity quantum optomechanics, deterministic preparation of nonclassical mechanical states with such Wigner negativity is a highly sought goal but is challenging as the intracavity interaction Hamiltonian is linear in mechanical position. Here, we show that, despite this form of interaction, by utilizing the nonlinearity of the cavity response with mechanical position, mechanical Wigner negativity can be prepared deterministically in the unresolved-sideband regime, without additional nonlinearities, nonclassical drives, or conditional measurements. In particular, we find that Wigner negativity can be prepared with an optical pulse, even without single-photon strong coupling, and the negativity persists in the steady state of a continuously driven system. Our results deepen our understanding of cavity-enhanced radiation pressure and establish a pathway for deterministic preparation of nonclassical mechanical states in the unresolved sideband regime.

Spin noise spectroscopy of optical light shifts

Light induced non-equilibrium spin noise spectroscopy is theoretically and experimentally shown to be an efficient technique to reveal the structure and the coherent effects in the probed transition. Indeed, using metastable helium, the spin noise spectrum is shown to exhibit a dual-peak structure around the Larmor frequency. This previously unobserved feature is due to the light shifts of the involved levels and strongly depends on the probe power, detuning, and polarization orientation. Both numerical and analytical models reproduce very well the details of the split spin noise spectra: this technique thus allows a simple and direct measurement of the light shifts, and its polarization dependence permits to reveal the level structure in a non ambiguous manner.

Cavity quantum optomechanical nonlinearities and position measurement beyond the breakdown of the linearized approximation

Several optomechanics experiments are now entering the highly sought nonlinear regime where optomechanical interactions are large even for low light levels. Within this regime, new quantum phenomena and improved performance may be achieved, however, a corresponding theoretical formalism of cavity quantum optomechanics that captures the nonlinearities of both the radiation-pressure interaction and the cavity response is needed to unlock these capabilities. Here, we develop such a nonlinear cavity quantum optomechanical framework, which we then utilize to propose how position measurement can be performed beyond the breakdown of the linearized approximation. Our proposal utilizes optical general-dyne detection, ranging from single to dual homodyne, to obtain mechanical position information imprinted onto both the optical amplitude and phase quadratures and enables both pulsed and continuous modes of operation. These cavity optomechanical nonlinearities are now being confronted in a growing number of experiments, and our framework will allow a range of advances to be made in e.g. quantum metrology, explorations of the standard quantum limit, and quantum measurement and control.

Nanomechanical Design Strategy for Single-Mode Optomechanical Measurement

The motion of a mechanical resonator is intrinsically decomposed over a collection of normal modes of vibration. When the resonator is used as a sensor, its multimode nature often deteriorates or limits its performance and sensitivity. This challenge is frequently encountered in state-of-the-art optomechanical sensing platforms. We present a mechanical design strategy that ensures that optomechanical measurements can retrieve information on a single mechanical degree of freedom, and implement it in a sliced photonic crystal nanobeam resonator. A spectral design approach is used to make mechanical symmetries robust against practical disorder. The effectiveness of the method is evaluated by deriving a relevant figure of merit for continuous and pulsed measurement application scenarios. The method can be employed in any mechanical design that presents unwanted spurious mechanical modes. In the nanobeam platform, we experimentally show an increase of the signal to noise ratio of the mode of interest over the first spurious mode by four orders of magnitudes.

Preparation and Verification of Two-Mode Mechanical Entanglement Through Pulsed Optomechanical Measurements

We propose a protocol how to generate and verify bipartite Gaussian entanglement between two mechanical modes coupled to a single optical cavity, by means of short optical pulses and measurement. Our protocol requires neither the resolved sideband regime, nor low thermal phonon occupancy, and allows the generation and verification of quantum entanglement in less than a mechanical period of motion. Entanglement is generated via effective two-mode mechanical squeezing through conditioning position measurements. We study the robustness of entanglement to experimental deviations in mechanical frequencies and optomechanical coupling rates.

Quantum properties of light propagating in a Coherent Population Oscillation Storage Medium

We study the propagation and storage of a quantum field using ultra-narrow Coherent Population Oscillations (CPO) in a $\Lambda-$type atomic medium. The predictions for classical fields are checked experimentally in a metastable vapor at room temperature. We derive the evolution of its squeezing spectrum in the presence of a large classical pump field which enables CPO to exist. We show that the spontaneous emission of the residual population pumped into the excited state progressively destroys the quantum noise properties of the quantum field along propagation. The output quantum field therefore tends to be a coherent state, discarding the possibility to store quantum states of light with CPO.

Phase Sensitive Amplification Enabled by Coherent Population Trapping

We isolate a novel four-wave mixing process, enabled by Coherent Population Trapping (CPT), leading to efficient phase sensitive amplification. This process is permitted by the exploitation of two transitions starting from the same twofold degenerate ground state. One of the transitions is used for CPT, defining bright and dark states from which ultra intense four-wave mixing is obtained via the other transition. This leads to the measurement of a strong phase sensitive gain even for low optical densities and out-of-resonance excitation. The enhancement of four-wave mixing is interpreted in the framework of the dark-state polariton formalism.
