Well-posedness of a first-order formulation for fractionally damped nonlinear acoustics

In this work, we study the well-posedness of a quasilinear first-order-in-time system with memory arising in nonlinear acoustics. The model features a memory kernel describing the fractional damping and covers, as special cases, first-order formulations of Kuznetsov- and Westervelt-type equations. For completely monotone convolution kernels, we prove that the Westervelt-type system admits unique local-in-time solutions in bounded domains for space dimensions $d\leq3$, under homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions, suitable regularity, and smallness assumptions. The analysis is based on energy estimates exploiting novel nonlinear coercivity properties of the memory terms. Under additional assumptions on the resolvent of the kernel, we show that the smallness conditions can be significantly relaxed. For finite sums of exponential kernels our results generalize to the Kuznetsov-type system. Additionally, we show that the inviscid case (absence of memory kernel) in \(\R^d\) can be treated by standard hyperbolic arguments in the case of the Kuznetsov-type system.

A parallel space-time $p$-adaptive discontinuous Galerkin method for nonlinear acoustics

In this paper, we introduce and analyze a space-time $p$-adaptive discontinuous Galerkin method for nonlinear acoustics. We first present the underlying mathematical model, which is based on a recently derived formulation involving, in particular, only first order in time derivatives. We then propose a spacetime discontinuous Galerkin discretization of this model, combining a symmetric Friedrichs systems discretization for symmetric hyperbolic systems with an interior penalty discretization for damping terms. The resulting nonlinear system is solved using Newton's method. Next, we present a well-posedness analysis of the discrete problem. The analysis begins with a linearized system, for which stability is shown. Using a fixed point argument, these results are extended to the fully discrete nonlinear system, yielding a priori error estimates in a natural discontinuous Galerkin norm. Finally, we present numerical experiments demonstrating the parallel solvability of the spacetime formulation and the effectiveness of p-adaptivity. The results confirm the theoretical convergence rates and show that adaptive refinement can reduce the number of degrees of freedom required to accurately approximate selected goal functionals. Moreover, the experiments demonstrate that the model reproduces characteristic phenomena of nonlinear acoustics, such as harmonic generation, thereby validating the proposed model.

Well-posedness of a first-order-in-time model for nonlinear acoustics with nonhomogeneous boundary conditions

We study well-posedness of a first-order-in-time model for nonlinear acoustics with nonhomogeneous boundary conditions in fractional Sobolev spaces. The analysis proceeds by first establishing well-posedness of an abstract parabolic-type semilinear evolution equation. These results are then applied to concrete operators and function spaces that capture the boundary conditions relevant for realistic modeling. Our approach is based on the spectral decomposition of a positive definite self-adjoint operator, with solution regularity characterized via the domains of its fractional powers. Employing Galerkin's method and the Newton-Kantorovich theorem, we prove well-posedness for the abstract nonlinear system with possibly nonhomogeneous boundary data. The connection between (spectral) fractional powers of the Laplacian and fractional Sobolev spaces due to interpolation theory allows us to transfer these results to the nonlinear acoustic model under nonhomogeneous Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions, yielding fractional Sobolev regularity. For Hodge/Lions boundary conditions, we establish well-posedness with solutions in classical Sobolev spaces of integer order.

Infinite dimensional Slow Manifolds for a Linear Fast-Reaction System

The aim of this expository paper is twofold. We start with a concise overview of the theory of invariant slow manifolds for fast-slow dynamical systems starting with the work by Tikhonov and Fenichel to the most recent works on infinite-dimensional fast-slow systems. The main part focuses on a class of linear fast-reaction PDE, which are particular forms of fast-reaction systems. The first result shows the convergence of solutions of the linear system to the limit system as the time-scale parameter $\varepsilon$ goes to zero. Moreover, from the explicit solutions the slow manifold is constructed and the convergence to the critical manifold is proven. The subsequent result, then, states a generalized version of the Fenichel-Tikhonov theorem for linear fast-reaction systems.

A first order in time wave equation modeling nonlinear acoustics

In this paper we focus on a small amplitude approximation of a Navier-Stokes-Fourier system modeling nonlinear acoustics. Omitting all third and higher order terms with respect to certain small parameters, we obtain a first order in time system containing linear and quadratic pressure and velocity terms. Subsequently, the well-posedness of the derived system is shown using the classical method of Galerkin approximation in combination with a fixed point argument. We first prove the well-posedness of a linearized equation using energy estimates and then the well-posedness of the nonlinear system using a Newton-Kantorovich type argument. Based on this, we also obtain global in time well-posedness for small enough data and exponential decay. This is in line with semigroup results for a linear part of the system that we provide as well.
