Response to the $^7_\Lambda$He interpretation of MAMI's recent determination of $B_\Lambda(^3_\Lambda$H)

We respond to the recent suggestion by A. Gal [arXiv:2604.18259] that the sharp pion-momentum peak at $p_{\pi^-} \approx 113.8$~MeV/$c$ observed in our $^7\mathrm{Li}(e,e^\prime K^+)$ electroproduction experiment at MAMI [Phys. Rev. Lett. 136, 152301 (2026)] originates from $^7_\Lambda\mathrm{He}$ weak decay rather than from $^3_\Lambda\mathrm{H} \to \pi^- + {}^3\mathrm{He}$ as we reported. We present quantitative arguments against this interpretation and conclude that the $^3_\Lambda\mathrm{H}$ assignment remains the most well-supported interpretation of the data.

Precise measurement of the $\Lambda$-binding energy difference between $^3_\Lambda$H and $^4_\Lambda$H via decay-pion spectroscopy at MAMI

We performed high-precision decay-pion spectroscopy of light $\Lambda$ hypernuclei at the Mainz Microtron (MAMI) using the A1 spectrometer facility. By measuring the monochromatic $\pi^-$ momentum from the two-body weak decay $^3_\Lambda\mathrm{H} \to {}^3\mathrm{He} + \pi^-$ and referencing it to the $^4_\Lambda\mathrm{H} \to {}^4\mathrm{He} + \pi^-$ decay, we determined the $\Lambda$ binding energy of $^3_\Lambda\mathrm{H}$ with unprecedented accuracy. The obtained value, $B_\Lambda(^3_\Lambda\mathrm{H}) = 0.523 \pm 0.013~(\mathrm{stat.}) \pm 0.075~(\mathrm{syst.})$~MeV, is consistent with the STAR result, but indicates a significantly deeper binding than inferred from earlier measurements. This result implies a stronger $\Lambda$-deuteron interaction and provides stringent constraints on hyperon-nucleon interactions.

Observation of narrow-band $\gamma$ radiation from a boron-doped diamond superlattice with an 855 MeV electron beam

We report the first observation of narrow band 1.3 MeV $\gamma$ radiation from a crystalline diamond micro-undulator. A diamond superlattice was grown with a periodical varying boron doping profile. Four sinusoidally deformed (110) periods resulted with a period length of 5.0 $\mu$m and an amplitude of 0.098 nm. A channeling experiment was performed with the 855 MeV electron beam of the Mainz Microtron MAMI accelerator facility. A clear peak was detected with a large sodium iodide scintillation detector close to the expected photon energy of 1.28 MeV. Key characteristics of the peak, including photon energy, width and intensity, were reproduced fairly well by Monte-Carlo simulation calculations. Based on the latter, optimized boron doping profiles were designed for a hypothetical 3 GeV electron beam, enabling preparation of a highly directional $\gamma$-ray beam with a photon energy of 14.5 MeV. The predicted spectral bandwidth is 13\%, however, with a high energy continuum tail. The on-target photon flux at a beam current of 100 $\mu$A would be about $10^{12}$/s.

Measurement of the helicity-dependent response in quasi-elastic proton knockout from $^{40}{\rm Ca}$

The role of the electron-helicity-dependent cross-section term and the structure function $f^{\prime}_{01}$ in the quasi-elastic $A(\vec{e}, e^{\prime}p)$ process was studied. The $f^{\prime}_{01}$ was measured for proton knockout from the $1\mathrm{d}_{3/2}$ shell in $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$ via the $^{40}{\rm Ca}(\vec{e},e' p)^{39}{\rm K}_{\rm g.s.}$ reaction, leaving the residual nucleus in a well-defined state. It requires a longitudinally polarized electron beam and out-of-plane proton detection. This structure function vanishes in the absence of final-state interactions (FSI) involving the ejected proton. Presented are the dependencies of $f^{\prime}_{01}$ on the missing momentum (closely related to the initial proton's Fermi momentum) and the angle between the knocked-out proton and the virtual photon momenta. The role of the spin-orbit interaction in FSI through the $\vec{L}\cdot \vec{S}$ term in a nuclear optical potential is discussed.

Measurement of $\rm ^{6}H$ ground state energy in an electron scattering experiment at MAMI-A1

For the first time the neutron-rich hydrogen isotope $\rm ^{6}H$ was produced in an electron scattering experiment in the reaction $\rm ^{7}Li(e,~e'p\pi^{+})^{6}H$ using the spectrometer facility of the A1 Collaboration at the Mainz Microtron accelerator. By measuring the triple coincidence between the scattered electron, the produced proton, and $\pi^{+}$, the missing mass spectrum of $\rm ^{6}H$ was obtained. A clear peak above $^3$H+n+n+n energy threshold was seen resulting in a ground state energy of $\rm ^{6}H$ at $2.3\pm0.5({\rm stat.})\pm0.4({\rm syst.})$ MeV with a width of $1.9\pm1.0({\rm stat.})\pm0.4({\rm syst.})$ MeV. This work challenges the understandings of multi-nucleon interactions and presents a new method to study light neutron-rich nuclei with electron scattering experiments.

Measurements of the electron-helicity asymmetry in the quasi-elastic ${\rm A}(\vec{e},e' p)$ process

We present measurements of the electron helicity asymmetry in quasi-elastic proton knockout from $^{2}$H and $^{12}$C nuclei by polarized electrons. This asymmetry depends on the fifth structure function, is antisymmetric with respect to the scattering plane, and vanishes in the absence of final-state interactions, and thus it provides a sensitive tool for their study. Our kinematics cover the full range in off-coplanarity angle $\phi_{pq}$, with a polar angle $\theta_{pq}$ coverage up to about 8 degrees. The missing energy resolution enabled us to determine the asymmetries for knock-out resulting in different states of the residual $^{11}$B system. We find that the helicity asymmetry for $p$-shell knockout from $^{12}$C depends on the final state of the residual system and is relatively large (up to $\approx 0.16$), especially at low missing momentum. It is considerably smaller (up to $\approx 0.01$) for $s$-shell knockout from both $^{12}$C and $^2$H. The data for $^2$H are in very good agreement with theoretical calculations, while the predictions for $^{12}$C exhibit differences with respect to the data.

Measurements of the induced polarization in the quasi-elastic $A(e,e'\vec p\,)$ process in non-coplanar kinematics

We report measurements of the induced polarization $\vec P$ of protons knocked out from $^2$H and $^{12}$C via the $A(e,e'\vec p\,)$ reaction. We have studied the dependence of $\vec P$ on two kinematic variables: the missing momentum $p_{\rm miss}$ and the "off-coplanarity" angle $\phi_{pq}$ between the scattering and reaction planes. For the full 360$\degree$ range in $\phi_{pq}$, both the normal ($P_y$) and, for the first time, the transverse ($P_x$) components of the induced polarization were measured with respect to the coordinate system associated with the scattering plane. $P_x$ vanishes in coplanar kinematics, however in non-coplanar kinematics, it is on the same scale as $P_y$. We find that the dependence on $\phi_{pq}$ is sine-like for $P_x$ and cosine-like for $P_y$. For carbon, the magnitude of the induced polarization is especially large when protons are knocked out from the $p_{3/2}$ shell at very small $p_{\rm miss}$. For the deuteron, the induced polarization is near zero at small $|p_{\rm miss}|$, and its magnitude increases with $|p_{\rm miss}|$. For both nuclei such behavior is reproduced qualitatively by theoretical results, driven largely by the spin-orbit part of the final-state interactions. However, for both nuclei, sizeable discrepancies exist between experiment and theory.

Quasi-elastic polarization-transfer measurements on the deuteron in anti-parallel kinematics

We present measurements of the polarization-transfer components in the $^2$H$(\vec e,e'\vec p)$ reaction, covering a previously unexplored kinematic region with large positive (anti-parallel) missing momentum, $p_{\rm miss}$, up to 220 MeV$/c$, and $Q^2=0.65$ $({\rm GeV}/c)^2$. These measurements, performed at the Mainz Microtron (MAMI), were motivated by theoretical calculations which predict small final-state interaction (FSI) effects in these kinematics, making them favorable for searching for medium modifications of bound nucleons in nuclei. We find in this kinematic region that the measured polarization-transfer components $P_x$ and $P_z$ and their ratio agree with the theoretical calculations, which use free-proton form factors. Using this, we establish upper limits on possible medium effects that modify the bound proton's form factor ratio $G_E/G_M$ at the level of a few percent. We also compare the measured polarization-transfer components and their ratio for $^2$H to those of a free (moving) proton. We find that the universal behavior of $^2$H, $^4$He and $^{12}$C in the double ratio $\frac{(P_x/P_z)^A}{(P_x/P_z)^{^1\rm H}}$ is maintained in the positive missing-momentum region.
