Anomalous $U(1)$ extension of the Standard Model

We present a set of example models in which the Standard Model (SM) symmetry group is extended by a new abelian symmetry. This additional symmetry appears anomalous in the effective low-energy theory; however, the anomalies cancel out when massive chiral fermions not present in the effective low-energy theory are taken into account. These chiral fermions under the new abelian gauge group, are chosen to be vector-like under the SM symmetries, and reside in the same representations as quarks and leptons. This allows us to quantitatively determine the magnitude of tree-level interactions between three vector bosons induced in low-energy effective field theory by the integration of chiral heavy fermions. We also examine the perturbativity constraints of the theory and the ultraviolet cut-off. We conclude by highlighting possible extensions of our work.

Reheating and Leptogenesis after Vector inflation

We study the reheating and non-thermal leptogenesis in the case of a vector inflaton. We concentrate on particle production during the phase of oscillating background, especially gravitational production induced by the presence of non-minimal coupling imposed by an isotropic and homogeneous Universe. Including processes involving the exchange of graviton, we then extend our study to decay into fermions via direct or anomalous couplings. The necessity of non-minimal gravitational coupling and the gauge nature of couplings to fermions implies a much richer phenomenology than for a scalar inflaton.

Anomalous and axial Z' contributions to g-2

We study the effects of an anomalous Z' boson on the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon (g-2), and especially the impact of its axial coupling. We mainly evaluate the negative contribution to (g-2) of such couplings at one-loop and look at the anomalous couplings generated at two loops. We find areas of the parameter space, where the anomalous contribution becomes comparable and even dominant compared to the one-loop contribution. We show that in such cases, the cutoff of the theory is sufficiently low, so that new charged fermions can be found in the next round of collider experiments. We comment on the realization of such a context in string theory orientifolds.

Light stringy states and the $g-2$ of the muon

In this work, we evaluate the contributions to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon ($(g-2)_{\mu}$) coming from light stringy states in a D-brane semi-realistic configuration. A scalar which couples only to the muon can have a mass sufficiently light to provide a significant contribution to the $(g-2)_{\mu}$. This scenario can arise in intersecting D-brane models, where such light scalars correspond to the first stringy excitations of an open string stretched between two D-branes intersecting with a very small angle. In this article, we show that there is a region in the space of the geometric parameters of the internal manifold where such scalar light stringy states can explain (part) of the observed discrepancy in the $(g-2)_{\mu}$. In a low string scale framework with $M_s\sim 10~{\rm TeV}$, we show that an excited Higgs with mass $\mathcal{O}(250~{\rm MeV})$, living in an intersection with an angle of order $\mathcal{O}(10^{-10})$, can provide a significant contribution of one-tenth of the $(g-2)_{\mu}$ discrepancy. This leads to a lower bound for the compact dimension where the branes intersect of order $\mathcal{O}(10^{-8}~{\rm GeV}^{-1})$. We also study patterns in D-brane configurations that realize our proposal, both in three and four stacks models.

Emergent neutrinos from heavy messengers

Fermionic bound states (mesinos) of messengers can play the role of right-handed neutrinos and due to their heavy masses they can realize the seesaw mechanism providing light and heavy sterile neutrinos. We study simple models with a single mesino to present the proof of principle. We extend our analysis to three mesino states where after the seesaw mechanism, three light and several heavy sterile neutrinos are obtained.

Lifetimes of light stringy states

In this paper, we evaluate the lifetime of the light stringy states that emerge in intersecting D-brane realisations of the Standard Model. For concreteness, we focus on a light massive scalar decaying into two massless fermions. Given the present experimental lower bounds of the string scale, we extrapolate the lifetime as a function of the intersection angles to very small angles in order to have states with lifetimes of the order of the universe. That provides an alluring example of a massive, very weakly interacting field with a huge lifetime, proposing itself as a potential dark matter candidate.

String (gravi)photons, "dark brane photons", holography and the hypercharge portal

The mixing of graviphotons and dark brane photons to the Standard Model hypercharge is analyzed in full generality, in weakly-coupled string theory. Both the direct mixing as well as effective terms that provide mixing after inclusion of SM corrections are estimated to lowest order. The results are compared with Effective Field Theory (EFT) couplings, originating in a hidden large-N theory coupled to the SM. The string theory mixing terms are typically subleading compared with the generic EFT couplings. The case where the hidden theory is a holographic theory is also analyzed, providing also suppressed mixing terms to the SM hypercharge.

Energy-Momentum portal to dark matter and emergent gravity

We propose a new scenario where dark matter belongs to a secluded sector coupled to the Standard Model through energy--momentum tensors. Our model is motivated by constructions where gravity {\it emerges} from a hidden sector, the graviton being identified by the kinetic term of the fields in the secluded sector. Supposing that the lighter particle of the secluded sector is the dark component of the Universe, we show that we can produce it in a sufficiently large amount despite the suppressed couplings of the theory, thanks to large temperatures of the thermal bath in the early stage of the Universe.

Emergent/Composite axions

Hidden theories coupled to the SM may provide emergent axions, that are composites/bound-states of the hidden fields. This is motivated by paradigms emerging from the AdS/CFT correspondence but it is a more general phenomenon. We explore the general setup and find that UV-sourced interactions of instanton densities give rise to emergent axions in the IR. We study the general properties of such axions and argue that they are generically different from both fundamental and composite axions that have been studied so far.

Yukawa's of light stringy states

Light massive string states can appear at D-brane intersections with small angles. We compute tri-linear Yukawa couplings of such open-string states to massless ones and to one another. Due to ambiguities in the normalisation of the vertex operators, that involve twist fields, we proceed via factorization of appropriate scattering amplitudes. Some peculiar features are observed that may lead to interesting signatures at colliders in the future.

Revisiting light stringy states in view of the 750 GeV diphoton excess

We investigate light massive string states that appear at brane intersections. They replicate the massless spectrum in a richer fashion and may be parametrically lighter than standard Regge excitations. We identify the first few physical states and determine their BRST invariant vertex operators. In the supersymmetric case we reconstruct the super-multiplet structure. We then compute some simple interactions, such as the decay rate of a massive scalar or vector into two massless fermions. Finally we suggest an alternative interpretation of the 750 GeV diphoton excess at LHC in terms of a light massive string state, a replica of the Standard Model Higgs.

Discrete symmetries from hidden sectors

We study the presence of abelian discrete symmetries in globally consistent orientifold compactifications based on rational conformal field theory. We extend previous work [1] by allowing the discrete symmetries to be a linear combination of U(1) gauge factors of the visible as well as the hidden sector. This more general ansatz significantly increases the probability of finding a discrete symmetry in the low energy effective action. Applied to globally consistent MSSM-like Gepner constructions we find multiple models that allow for matter parity or Baryon triality.

Production of light stringy states

We discuss the direct production of light stringy states. Those states correspond to the lightest stringy excitations localized at the intersection of two D-brane stacks and their mass can be parametrically smaller than the string scale. Thus in a low string scale scenario one may observe stringy signatures at LHC even in the absence of the usual string resonances. We compute the tree level string scattering amplitude involving two gauge bosons and two such light stringy states. We give the squared amplitude summed over all polarization and gauge configuration and eventually apply the result to the quark sector of a D-brane realization of the Standard Model.

Three- and Four-point correlators of excited bosonic twist fields

We compute three- and four-point correlation functions containing excited bosonic twist fields. Our results can be used to determine properties, such as lifetimes and production rates, of massive string excitations localised at D-brane intersections, which could be signatures of a low string scale even if the usual string resonances are inaccessible to the LHC.

String Constraints on Discrete Symmetries in MSSM Type II Quivers

We study the presence of discrete gauge symmetries in D-brane semi-realistic compactifications. After establishing the constraints on the transformation behaviour of the chiral matter for the presence of a discrete gauge symmetry we perform a systematic search for discrete gauge symmetries within local semi-realistic D-brane realizations, based on four D-brane stacks, of the MSSM and the MSSM with three right-handed neutrinos. The systematic search reveals that Proton hexality, a discrete symmetry which ensures the absence of R-parity violating terms as well as the absence of dangerous dimension 5 proton decay operators, is only rarely realized. Moreover, none of the semi-realistic local D-brane configurations exhibit any family dependent discrete gauge symmetry.

Light stringy states

We carefully study the spectrum of open strings localized at the intersections of D6-branes and identify the lowest massive 'twisted' states and their vertex operators, paying particular attention to the signs of the intersection angles. We argue that the masses of the lightest states scale as M^2 ~ \theta M^2_s and can thus be parametrically smaller than the string scale. Relying on previous analyses, we compute scattering amplitudes of massless 'twisted' open strings and study their factorization, confirming the presence of the light massive states as sub-dominant poles in one of the channels.

On closed-string twist-field correlators and their open-string descendants

In a recent paper we have proposed the possibility that the lightest massive string states could be identified with open strings living at intersections of D-branes forming small angles. In this note, we reconsider the relevant twist-field correlation functions and perform the analysis of the sub-dominant physical poles in the various channels. Our derivation is new in that it is based on the algebraic procedure for the construction of open string models starting from their closed-string `parents' rather than on the stress-tensor method. We also indicate possible generalizations and diverse applications of our approach.

SU(5) D-brane realizations, Yukawa couplings and proton stability

We discuss SU(5) Grand Unified Theories in the context of orientifold compactifications. Specifically, we investigate two and three D-brane stack realizations of the Georgi-Glashow and the flipped SU(5) model and analyze them with respect to their Yukawa couplings. As pointed out in arXiv:0909.0271 the most economical Georgi-Glashow realization based on two stacks generically suffers from a disastrous large proton decay rate. We show that allowing for an additional U(1) D-brane stack this as well as other phenomenological problems can be resolved. We exemplify with globally consistent Georgi-Glashow models based on RCFT that these D-brane quivers can be indeed embedded in a global setting. These globally consistent realizations admit rigid O(1) instantons inducing the perturbatively missing coupling 10105^H. Finally we show that flipped SU(5) D-brane realizations even with multiple U(1) D-brane stacks are plagued by severe phenomenological drawbacks which generically cannot be overcome.
