From $Z$ to $a$: High-temperature relations, subleading semi-universality, and conformal anomalies

The free energy of any CFT, $ \ln Z(\beta; \omega_i)$, admits two expansions: high temperature ($\beta \rightarrow 0$) and fast rotation ($\omega_i \rightarrow 1$). We demonstrate that locality of the thermal effective action forces $\ln Z$ to take a simple analytic form at all orders in the high temperature expansion, and further imposes an infinite number of sharp relations on the coefficients in this expansion. All are homogeneous, except at order $\beta^1$ due to the Weyl anomaly. From this, the $a$-anomaly can be extracted from the partition function. The relations resum in the fast-spinning expansion into differential equations in $\beta$ obeyed by the semi-universal limit and its corrections. We verify the relations in a variety of CFTs. We generalize to any even $d$, but find no similar relations at odd $d$.

Semi-universality of conformal higher-derivative and conformal higher-spin fields

In this paper, we study thermal partition functions of free exotic conformal field theories, focusing on conformal higher-derivative and conformal higher-spin fields, in the semi-universal limit $|\omega_i|\rightarrow 1$. It was recently conjectured in \cite{Anand:2025mfh} that, in this limit, the thermal partition function develops universal poles in $(1-|\omega_i|)$, while the corresponding residue functions are theory-dependent. We analyze conformal higher-derivative scalar, fermionic, and vector fields in the semi-universal limit. We then extend the study to the Weyl graviton, the Weyl gravitino, and conformal higher-spin fields (CHS) on $S^1_\beta\times S^3$, using both spectral mode-sum and operator-counting methods. In all cases, we find the expected pole structure, with residue functions whose behavior depends on the presence or absence of negative-twist states. For four-dimensional conformal higher-spin fields, we further reproduce the same residue-pole structure from the one-loop partition function of massless higher-spin fields in thermal AdS$_5$. Finally, we show that the semi-universal limit provides a useful diagnostic of negative-twist states, which indicate violations of ANEC-type bounds in these theories, whereas the traditional high-temperature expansion is insensitive to them.

Magnetic corrections to the classical soft photon theorems at all orders

When a set of charged or dyonic objects scatter and subsequently disperse, the process generically emits electromagnetic radiation. The classical soft photon theorem constrains the constant term and leading power-law fall-off of the emitted waveform at asymptotic times solely in terms of the momenta and charges of the incoming and outgoing particles. In this work, we extend the analysis to include the full tower of subleading corrections in the late-time and early-time expansion of the electric and magnetic waveforms, providing explicit expressions that depend only on the kinematic data and the electric and magnetic charges of the scattered objects. Using independent electric and magnetic potentials, we compute the full classical soft expansion for general dyonic scattering. We provide explicit, recursive expressions for the trajectory coefficients and the resulting electric and magnetic waveforms. The resulting soft expansion exhibits manifest covariance under the electric-magnetic duality. The electric and magnetic waveforms transform as an $SO(2)$ doublet under electric-magnetic duality. This provides a non-trivial consistency check on our formulation. For the specific case of two-body scattering, we obtain resummed expressions for the waveforms in both the time and frequency domains.

Waveform, memory and classical soft scalar theorems

We examine a scattering process in which a set of particles come together, interact through a long-range massless scalar force like dilaton mediated and then disperse. Using worldline formalism, we compute the trajectories of the scattered particles and derive an infinite series of subleading terms in the late-time and early-time expansion of the scalar waveform. We study the scalar waveform, the scalar memory term and classical soft scalar theorems. We ignore gravitational interactions and discuss the challenges if we include it.
