The limits of rechargeable spin battery

We discuss how the ideal rechargeable energy accumulator can be made, and what are the limits for solid state energy storage. We show that in theory the spin batteries based on heavy fermions can surpass the chemical ones by energy capacitance. The absence of chemical reactions in spin batteries makes them more stable, also they don't need to be heated in cold conditions. We study how carriers statistics and density of states affect energy capacity of the battery. Also, we discuss hypothetical spin batteries based on neutron stars.

Mimicking states with limited resources: passing quantum quiz via global control

Precise control of quantum systems with a moderate number of degrees of freedom, being of interest for application in quantum technologies, becomes experimentally feasible. Various types of quantum scenarios and protocols are being widely discussed in scientific literature. We propose, analyze, and optimize a protocol which allows fast simulation of properties of unknown quantum states relying on minimum relevant information. Our protocol, having common features with quantum identification and shortcuts to adiabaticity, permits avoiding orthogonality catastrophe, where transitions between physically very similar systems are characterized by zero or a very low fidelity.

Self-protected adiabatic quantum computation

Recent experiments show the existence of collective decoherence in quantum systems. We study the possibility of quantum computation in decoherence free subspace which is robust against such kind of decoherence processes. This passive protection protocol can be especially advantageous for continuous quantum computation such as quantum annealers. As an example we propose to use decoherence protected adiabatic quantum computation for the Grover search problem. Our proposal contains only two-body interactions, making it feasible in near-term quantum devices.

Polaron formation in a spin chain by measurement-induced imaginary Zeeman field

We present a high-rate projective measurement-based approach for controlling non-unitary evolution of a quantum chain of interacting spins. In this approach, we demonstrate that local measurement of a single external spin coupled to the chain can produce a spin polaron, which remains stable after the end of the measurement. This stability results from the fact that the Hilbert space of the chain contains a subspace of non-decaying states, stable during the nonunitary evolution. These states determine the resulting final state of the chain and long-term shape of the polaron. In addition to formation of the spin polarons, the presented measurement protocol can be used for distillation of non-decaying states from an initial superposition or mixture.

Tunable Tradeoff between Quantum and Classical Computation via Nonunitary Zeno-like Dynamics

We propose and analyze a nonunitary variant of the continuous time Grover search algorithm based on frequent Zeno-type measurements. We show that the algorithm scales similarly to the pure quantum version by deriving tight analytical lower bounds on its efficiency for arbitrary database sizes and measurement parameters. We also study the behavior of the algorithm subject to noise, and find that under certain oracle and operational errors our measurement-based algorithm outperforms the standard algorithm, showing robustness against these noises. Our analysis is based on deriving a non-hermitian effective description of the algorithm, which yields a deeper insight into components responsible for the quantum and the classical operation of the protocol.

Quantum mechanics and speed limit of ultrafast local control in spin chains

We study optimization of fidelity for ultrafast transformation of a spin chain via external control of a local exchange coupling. We show that infidelity of such a process can be dramatically decreased by choosing a proper control profile in nonadiabatic time domain, predict main features of this profile analytically, corroborate them numerically with a gradient search algorithm, and discuss the corresponding quantum speed limit. For ultrafast transformations, the qualitative features of the obtained optimal control are system-independent. Moreover, the main restrictions on its shape do not depend on the transformation time and remain valid up to the adiabatic limit. Our results can be applied to control a broad variety of quantum systems.

Non-adiabatic transformation of a spin-chain geometry via local control

We consider transformation from a closed to an open spin chain and vice versa produced by changing single link strength in a pair of neighboring spins. We show that in the non-adiabatic time domain fidelity of such a process can be increased by proper choosing of the control function for spin-spin exchange coupling. We obtain this function for an antiferromagnetic quantum Ising chain and present heuristic reasons restricting possible time-dependences of Hamiltonians applied for a high-fidelity control.

Quantum state identification of qutrits via a nonlinear protocol

We propose a probabilistic quantum protocol to realize a nonlinear transformation of qutrit states, which by iterative applications on ensembles can be used to distinguish two types of pure states. The protocol involves single-qutrit and two-qutrit unitary operations as well as post-selection according to the results obtained in intermediate measurements. We utilize the nonlinear transformation in an algorithm to identify a quantum state provided it belongs to an arbitrary known finite set. The algorithm is based on dividing the known set of states into two appropriately designed subsets which can be distinguished by the nonlinear protocol. In most cases this is accompanied by the application of some properly defined physical (unitary) operation on the unknown state. Then, by the application of the nonlinear protocol one can decide which of the two subsets the unknown state belongs to thus reducing the number of possible candidates. By iteratively continuing this procedure until a single possible candidate remains, one can identify the unknown state.

High-fidelity non-adiabatic cutting and stitching of a spin chain via local control

We propose and analyze, focusing on non-adiabatic effects, a technique of manipulating quantum spin systems based on local 'cutting' and 'stitching' of the Heisenberg exchange coupling between the spins. This first operation is cutting of a bond separating a single spin from a linear chain, or of two neighboring bonds for a ring-shaped array of spins. We show that the disconnected spin can be in the ground state with a high-fidelity even after a non-adiabatic process. Next, we consider inverse operation of stitching these bonds to increase the system size. We show that the optimal control algorithm can be found by using common numerical procedures with a simple two-parametric control function able to produce a high-fidelity cutting and stitching. These results can be applied for manipulating ensembles of quantum dots, considered as prospective elements for quantum information technologies, and for design of machines based on quantum thermodynamics.

Nondeterministic quantum computation via ground state cooling and ultrafast Grover algorithm

Over the last decades, there have been many proposals for quantum computation. One of the promising candidates is adiabatic quantum computation (AQC). The central idea of AQC is about finding the ground state of a system with a problem Hamiltonian via particular adiabatic passages, starting from an initialized ground state of a simple Hamiltonian. One disadvantage of AQC is the significant growth of necessary runtime, in particular when there are quantum phase transitions during the AQC passages. Here we propose a nondeterministic ground state cooling quantum computation model based on selective projection measurements on an ancilla coupled to the system with the problem Hamiltonian previously cooled by conventional techniques. We illustrate the model by Grover search problem and show that our nondeterministic model requires a constant or at most logarithmic runtime and can also get rid of possible difficulties in preparing the ground state of the simple Hamiltonian.

Spatial compression of a particle state in a parabolic potential by spin measurements

We propose a scheme for engineering compressed spatial states in a two-dimensional parabolic potential with a spin-orbit coupling by selective spin measurements. This sequence of measurements results in a coordinate-dependent density matrix with probability maxima achieved at a set of lines or at a two dimensional lattice. The resultant probability density depends on the spin-orbit coupling and the potential parameters and allows one to obtain a broad class of localized pure states on demand. The proposed scheme can be realized in spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates.

Two-component Dirac equation

We provide an alternative approach to relativistic dynamics based on the Feshbach projection technique. Instead of directly studying the Dirac equation, we derive a two-component equation for the upper spinor. This approach allows one to investigate the underlying physics in a different perspective. For particles with small mass such as the neutrino, the leading order equation has a Hermitian effective Hamiltonian, implying there is no leakage between the upper and lower spinors. In the weak relativistic regime, the leading order corresponds to a non-Hermitian correction to the Pauli equation, which takes into account the non-zero possibility of finding the lower-spinor state and offers a more precise description.

Quantum simulator for many-body electron-electron Coulomb interaction with ion traps

We propose an analog quantum simulator that uses ion traps to realize the many-body electron-electron Coulomb interaction of an electron gas. This proposal maps a system that is difficult to solve and control to an experimentally-feasible setup that can be realized with current technologies. Using a dilatation transform, we show that ion traps can efficiently simulate electronic Coulomb interactions. No complexity overhead is added if only the energy spectrum is desired, and only a simple unitary transform is needed on the initial state otherwise. The runtime of the simulation is found to be much shorter than the timescale of the corresponding electronic system, minimizing susceptibility of the proposed quantum simulator to external noise and decoherence. This proposal works in any number of dimensions, and could be used to simulate different topological phases of electrons in graphene-like structures, by using ions trapped in honeycomb lattices.

Dynamical invariants in non-Markovian quantum state diffusion equation

We find dynamical invariants for open quantum systems described by the non-Markovian quantum state diffusion (QSD) equation. In stark contrast to closed systems where the dynamical invariant can be identical to the system density operator, these dynamical invariants no longer share the equation of motion for the density operator. Moreover, the invariants obtained with from bi-orthonormal basis can be used to render an exact solution to the QSD equation and the corresponding non-Markovian dynamics without using master equations or numerical simulations. Significantly we show that we can apply these dynamic invariants to reverse-engineering a Hamiltonian that is capable of driving the system to the target state, providing a novel way to design control strategy for open quantum systems.

The distinctions between the electrical conductivities under non-contact and contact current excitation in spin-split two-dimensional conductors

It is shown that the normal electron-electron scattering is a source of electrical resistance on non-contact current excitation in two-dimensional spin-split electron systems. In contrast to the contact current injection, non-contact current excitation causes spatially inhomogeneous polarization in a two-dimensional conductor leading to new resistivity mechanisms.

Expedited Holonomic Quantum Computation in Decoherence-Free Subspace

Holonomic quantum computation (HQC) may not show its full potential in quantum speedup due to the prerequisite of a long coherent runtime imposed by the adiabatic condition. Here we show that the conventional HQC can be dramatically accelerated by using external control fields, of which the effectiveness is exclusively determined by the integral of the control fields in the time domain. Remarkably this control scheme can be realized with net zero energy cost and it is fault-tolerant against fluctuation and noise, significantly relaxing the experimental constraints. We demonstrate how to realize the scheme via decoherence-free subspaces. In this way we unify quantum robustness merits of this fault-tolerant control scheme, the conventional HQC and decoherence-free subspace, and propose an {\em expedited} holonomic quantum computation protocol.

Ground state cooling of quantum systems via a one-shot measurement

We prove that there exists a family of quantum systems that can be cooled to their ground states by a one-shot projective measurement on the ancillas coupled to these systems. Consequently, this proof gives rise to the conditions for achieving the one-shot measurement ground-state cooling (OSMGSC). We also propose a general procedure for finding unitary propagators and corresponding Hamiltonians to realize such cooling by means of inverse engineering technique.

Lagrangian approach in spin-oscillations problem

Lagrangian of electronic liquid in magneto-inhomogeneous micro-conductor has been constructed. A corresponding Euler-Lagrange equation has been solved. It was shown that the described system has eigenmodes of spin polarization and total electric current oscillations. The suggested approach permits to study the spin dynamics in an open-circuit which contains capacitance and/or inductivity.
