Extracting the top-quark running mass using $t\bar{t}$+1-jet events produced at the Large Hadron Collider

We present the calculation of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections for top-quark pair production in association with an additional jet at hadron colliders, using the modified minimal subtraction scheme to renormalize the top-quark mass. The results are compared to measurements at the Large Hadron Collider run I. In particular, we determine the top-quark running mass from a fit of the theoretical results presented here to the LHC data.

Production of heavy Higgs bosons and decay into top quarks at the LHC

We investigate the production of heavy, neutral Higgs boson resonances and their decays to top-quark top-antiquark ($t\bar{t}$) pairs at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at next-to-leading order (NLO) in the strong coupling of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). The NLO corrections to heavy Higgs boson production and the Higgs-QCD interference are calculated in the large $m_t$ limit with an effective K-factor rescaling. The nonresonant $t\bar{t}$ background is taken into account at NLO QCD including weak-interaction corrections. In order to consistently determine the total decay widths of the heavy Higgs bosons, we consider for definiteness the type-II two-Higgs-doublet extension of the standard model and choose three parameter scenarios that entail two heavy neutral Higgs bosons with masses above the $t\bar{t}$ threshold and unsuppressed Yukawa couplings to top quarks. For these three scenarios we compute, for the LHC operating at 13 TeV, the $t\bar{t}$ cross section and the distributions of the $t\bar{t}$ invariant mass, of the transverse top-quark momentum and rapidity, and of the cosine of the Collins-Soper angle with and without the two heavy Higgs resonances. For selected $M_{t\bar{t}}$ bins we estimate the significances for detecting a heavy Higgs signal in the $t\bar{t}$ dileptonic and lepton plus jets decay channels.

Physics at the e+ e- Linear Collider

A comprehensive review of physics at an e+e- Linear Collider in the energy range of sqrt{s}=92 GeV--3 TeV is presented in view of recent and expected LHC results, experiments from low energy as well as astroparticle physics. The report focuses in particular on Higgs boson, Top quark and electroweak precision physics, but also discusses several models of beyond the Standard Model physics such as Supersymmetry, little Higgs models and extra gauge bosons. The connection to cosmology has been analyzed as well.

HATHOR for single top-quark production: Updated predictions and uncertainty estimates for single top-quark production in hadronic collisions

We present updated predictions for single top-quark production in hadronic collisions. The analysis is based on next-to-leading order QCD calculations. The input parameters are fixed to recent measurements. We compare different PDF sets and investigate the related uncertainties. The impact of uncalculated higher orders is estimated using an independent variation of the renormalisation and factorisation scale. The theoretical predictions are compared with recent measurements from Tevatron and LHC. Furthermore, the cross section measurements are used to estimate the top-quark mass. To perform the analysis we extended the publicly available HatHor program to single top-quark production. We thus provide a unified framework for the fast numerical evaluation of total cross sections for top-quark production, which may be used for example in Standard Model fits. For future extensions towards NNLO accuracy, we include already all scale dependent terms at NNLO. We briefly describe how to use the program and provide all required tools to repeat the aforementioned analysis.

Weak Interactions in Top-Quark Pair Production at Hadron Colliders: An Update

Weak corrections for top-quark pair production at hadron colliders are revisited. Predictions for collider energies of 8 TeV, adopted to the recent LHC run, and for 13 as well as 14 TeV, presumably relevant for the next round of LHC experiments, are presented. Kinematic regions with large momentum transfer are identified, where the corrections become large and may lead to strong distortions of differential distributions, thus mimicking anomalous top quark couplings. As a complementary case we investigate the threshold region, corresponding to configurations with small relative velocity between top and antitop quark, which is particularly sensitive to the top-quark Yukawa coupling. We demonstrate, that nontrivial upper limits on this coupling, complementary to those recently derived by the CMS and the ATLAS collaorations, are well within reach of ongoing experiments. In addition we suggest a prescription that allows the implementation of these corrections in current Monte Carlo generators. Furthermore, the weak corrections have been included in the publicly available Hathor library. The numerical results presented in this article use the same setup as the recently calculated NNLO QCD corrections. The results can thus be combined to give the most precise theoretical predictions.

Calculation of two-loop QCD corrections for hadronic single top-quark production in the t channel

In this article we discuss the calculation of single top-quark production in the t channel at two-loop order in QCD. In particular we present the decomposition of the amplitude according to its spin and colour structure and present complete results for the two-loop amplitudes in terms of master integrals. For the vertex corrections compact analytic expressions are given. The box contributions are implemented in a publicly available C program.

High precision fundamental constants at the TeV scale

This report summarizes the proceedings of the 2014 Mainz Institute for Theoretical Physics (MITP) scientific program on "High precision fundamental constants at the TeV scale". The two outstanding parameters in the Standard Model dealt with during the MITP scientific program are the strong coupling constant $α_s$ and the top-quark mass $m_t$. Lacking knowledge on the value of those fundamental constants is often the limiting factor in the accuracy of theoretical predictions. The current status on $α_s$ and $m_t$ has been reviewed and directions for future research have been identified.

On top-pair hadro-production at next-to-next-to-leading order

We study the QCD corrections at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) to the cross section for the hadronic pair-production of top quarks. We present new results in the high-energy limit using the well-known framework of k_t-factorization. We combine these findings with the known threshold corrections and present improved approximate NNLO results over the full kinematic range. This approach is employed to quantify the residual theoretical uncertainty of the approximate NNLO results which amounts to about 4% for the Tevatron and 5% for the LHC cross-section predictions. Our analytic results in the high-energy limit will provide an important check on future computations of the complete NNLO cross sections.

AutoDipole - Automated generation of dipole subtraction terms -

We present an automated generation of the subtraction terms for next-to-leading order QCD calculations in the Catani-Seymour dipole formalism. For a given scattering process with n external particles our Mathematica package generates all dipole terms, allowing for both massless and massive dipoles. The numerical evaluation of the subtraction terms proceeds with MadGraph, which provides Fortran code for the necessary scattering amplitudes. Checks of the numerical stability are discussed.

-- HATHOR -- HAdronic Top and Heavy quarks crOss section calculatoR

We present a program to calculate the total cross section for top-quark pair production in hadronic collisions. The program takes into account recent theoretical developments such as approximate next-to-next-to-leading order perturbative QCD corrections and it allows for studies of the theoretical uncertainty by separate variations of the factorization and renormalization scales. In addition it offers the possibility to obtain the cross section as a function of the running top-quark mass. The program can also be applied to a hypothetical fourth quark family provided the QCD couplings are standard.

The top-quark's running mass

We discuss the direct determination of the running top-quark mass from measurements of the total cross section of hadronic top-quark pair-production. The theory predictions in the MSbar scheme are very stable under scale variations and show rapid apparent convergence of the perturbative expansion. These features are explained by studying the underlying parton dynamics.

From the LHC to Future Colliders

Discoveries at the LHC will soon set the physics agenda for future colliders. This report of a CERN Theory Institute includes the summaries of Working Groups that reviewed the physics goals and prospects of LHC running with 10 to 300/fb of integrated luminosity, of the proposed sLHC luminosity upgrade, of the ILC, of CLIC, of the LHeC and of a muon collider. The four Working Groups considered possible scenarios for the first 10/fb of data at the LHC in which (i) a state with properties that are compatible with a Higgs boson is discovered, (ii) no such state is discovered either because the Higgs properties are such that it is difficult to detect or because no Higgs boson exists, (iii) a missing-energy signal beyond the Standard Model is discovered as in some supersymmetric models, and (iv) some other exotic signature of new physics is discovered. In the contexts of these scenarios, the Working Groups reviewed the capabilities of the future colliders to study in more detail whatever new physics may be discovered by the LHC. Their reports provide the particle physics community with some tools for reviewing the scientific priorities for future colliders after the LHC produces its first harvest of new physics from multi-TeV collisions.

Measuring the running top-quark mass

We present the first direct determination of the running top-quark mass based on the total cross section of top-quark pair-production as measured at the Tevatron. Our theory prediction for the cross section includes various next-to-next-to-leading order QCD contributions, in particular all logarithmically enhanced terms near threshold, the Coulomb corrections at two loops and all explicitly scale dependent terms at NNLO accuracy. The result allows for an exact and independent variation of the renormalization and factorization scales. For Tevatron and LHC we study its dependence on all scales, on the parton luminosity and on the top-quark mass using both the conventional pole mass definition as well as the running mass in the MSbar scheme. We extract for the top-quark an MSbar mass of m(mu=m) = 160.0 +3.3 -3.2 GeV, which corresponds to a pole mass of m_t = 168.9 +3.5 -3.4 GeV.

Weak effects in b-jet production at hadron colliders

One of the main challenges of the Tevatron at Fermilab and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN is the determination of Standard Model (SM) parameters at the TeV scale. In this context various processes will be investigated which involve bottom-quark jets in the final state, for example decays of top-quarks or gauge bosons of the weak interaction. Hence the theoretical understanding of processes with bottom-quark jets is necessary. In this paper analytic results will be presented for the weak corrections to bottom-quark jet production -- neglecting purely photonic corrections. The results will be used to study differential distributions, where sizeable effects are observed.

NLO QCD corrections to pp/ppbar --> WW+jet+X including leptonic W-boson decays

We report on the calculation of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the production of W-boson pairs in association with a hard jet at the Tevatron and the LHC, which is an important source of background for Higgs and new-physics searches. Leptonic decays of the W bosons are included by applying an improved version of the narrow-width approximation that treats the W bosons as on-shell particles, but keeps the information on the W spin. Contributions from external bottom quarks are neglected, because they are either numerically suppressed or should be attributed to different processes such as Wt or ttbar production. A survey of differential NLO QCD cross sections is provided both for the LHC and the Tevatron. The QCD corrections stabilize the leading-order prediction for the cross section with respect to scale variations. However, the scale dependence of the next-to-leading order results for the LHC is only reduced considerably if a veto against the emission of a second hard jet is applied. In general, the corrections do not simply rescale the differential leading-order cross sections. In particular, their shapes are distorted if an additional energy scale is involved.

New results for t bar t production at hadron colliders

We present new theoretical predictions for the t bar t production cross section at NNLO at the Tevatron and the LHC. We discuss the scale uncertainty and the errors due to the parton distribution functions (PDFs). For the LHC, we present a fit formula for the pair production cross section as a function of the center of mass energy and we provide predictions for the pair production cross section of a hypothetical heavy fourth generation quark t'.
