A comparative study of small x Monte Carlos with and without QCD coherence effects

We compare two Monte Carlo implementations of resummation schemes for the description of parton evolution at small values of Bjorken x. One of them is based on the Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) evolution equation and generates fully differential parton distributions in momentum space making use of reggeized gluons. The other one is based on the Catani-Ciafaloni-Fiorani-Marchesini (CCFM) partonic kernel where QCD coherence effects are introduced. It has been argued that both approaches agree with each other in the x -> 0 limit. We show that this is not the case for azimuthal angle dependent quantities since at high energies the BFKL approach is dominated by its zero conformal spin component while the CCFM gluon Green function receives contributions from all conformal spins even at very small x.

Markovian Monte Carlo solutions of the one-loop CCFM equations

A systematic extension of the Monte Carlo (MC) algorithm, that solves the DGLAP equation, into the so-called the one-loop CCFM evolution is presented. Modifications are related to a z-dependent coupling constant; transverse momentum dependence is added to the x-dependence of the parton distributions. The presented Markovian algorithm for one-loop CCFM evolution is the first step in extending it to other more sophisticated schemes beyond DGLAP. In particular, implementing the complete CCFM will be the next step. The presently implemented one-loop CCFM option will be a useful tool in testing the forthcoming MC solutions. Numerical results of the new MC are confronted with other non-MC numerical solutions. The agreement within the MC statistical error of ~0.1% is found. Also, numerical results for kT-dependent structure functions are presented.

Constrained MC for QCD evolution with rapidity ordering and minimum kT

With the imminent start of LHC experiments, development of phenomenological tools, and in particular the Monte Carlo programs and algorithms, becomes urgent. A new algorithm for the generation of a parton shower initiated by the single initial hadron beam is presented. The new algorithm is of the class of the so called ``constrained MC'' type algorithm (an alternative to the backward evolution MC algorithm), in which the energy and the type of the parton at the end of the parton shower are constrained (predefined). The complete kinematics configurations with explicitly constructed four momenta are generated and tested. Evolution time is identical with rapidity and minimum transverse momentum is used as an infrared cut-off. All terms of the leading-logarithmic approximation in the DGLAP evolution are properly accounted for. In addition, the essential improvements towards the so-called CCFM/BFKL models are also properly implemented. The resulting parton distributions are cross-checked up to the 0.1% precision level with the help of a multitude of comparisons with other MC and non-MC programs. We regard these tests as an important asset to be exploited at the time when the presented MC will enter as a building block in a larger MC program for W/Z production process at LHC.

Numerical tools for the theoretical study of QCD at small x

In this contribution we present the status of two numerical tools designed to study the small x limit of QCD. The first one is a Monte Carlo simulation of the BFKL evolution equation. In design of this approach emphasis has been placed on exploiting the linear behaviour that many variants of the BFKL evolution possess. This allows us to design a procedure which can be used to study theoretical and phenomenological aspects of different kernels. The second one is a semi-analytic approach to study Lipatov's effective action which describes Reggeon interactions. The study of the properties of this action is very complicated and we propose using a computational tool to handle the large amount of non--local vertices and the derivation of higher order corrections.

Herwig++ 2.0 Release Note

A new release of the Monte Carlo program Herwig++ (version 2.0) is now available. This is the first version of the program which can be used for hadron-hadron physics and includes the full simulation of both initial- and final-state QCD radiation.

Herwig++ 2.0beta Release Note

A new release of the Monte Carlo program Herwig++ (version 2.0beta) is now available. The main new feature is the extension of the program to include simple hadron-hadron processes including the initial-state parton shower.

Development of Ferroelectric Order in Relaxor (1-x)Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 - xPbTiO3

The microstructure and phase transition in relaxor ferroelectric Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 (PMN) and its solid solution with PbTiO3 (PT), PMN-xPT, remain to be one of the most puzzling issues of solid state science. In the present work we have investigated the evolution of the phase symmetry in PMN-xPT ceramics as a function of temperature (20 K < T < 500 K) and composition (0 <= x <= 0.15) by means of high-resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction. Structural analysis based on the experimental data reveals that the substitution of Ti^4+ for the complex B-site (Mg1/3Nb2/3)^4+ ions results in the development of a clean rhombohedral phase at a PT-concentration as low as 5%. The results provide some new insight into the development of the ferroelectric order in PMN-PT, which has been discussed in light of the kinetics of polar nanoregions and the physical models of the relaxor ferroelectrics to illustrate the structural evolution from a relaxor to a ferroelectric state.
