Magnetic behavior of volborthite Cu3V2O7(OH)2(H2O)2 determined by coupled trimers rather than frustrated chains

Motivated by recent experiments on volborthite single crystals showing a wide 1/3-magnetization plateau, we perform microscopic modeling by means of density functional theory (DFT) with the single-crystal structural data as a starting point. Using DFT+U, we find four leading magnetic exchanges: antiferromagnetic J and J2, as well as ferromagnetic J' and J1. Simulations of the derived spin Hamiltonian show good agreement with the experimental low-field magnetic susceptibility and high-field magnetization data. The 1/3-plateau phase pertains to polarized magnetic trimers formed by strong J bonds. An effective J$\rightarrow\infty$ model shows a tendency towards condensation of magnon bound states preceding the plateau phase.

Exact ground states with deconfined gapless excitations for the 3 leg spin-1/2 tube

We consider a spin-1/2 tube (a three-leg ladder with periodic boundary conditions) with a Hamiltonian given by two projection operators - one on the triangles, and the other on the square plaquettes on the side of the tube - that can be written in terms of Heisenberg and four-spin ring exchange interactions. We identify 3 phases: (i) for strongly antiferromagnetic exchange on the triangles, an exact ground state with a gapped spectrum can be given as an alternation of spin and chirality singlet bonds between nearest triangles; (ii) for ferromagnetic exchange on the triangles, we recover the phase of the spin-3/2 Heisenberg chain; (iii) between these two phases, a gapless incommensurate phase exists. We construct an exact ground state with two deconfined domain walls and a gapless excitation spectrum at the quantum phase transition point between the incommensurate and dimerized phase.

Coupled frustrated quantum spin-1/2 chains with orbital order in volborthite Cu3V2O7(OH)2(H2O)2

We present a microscopic magnetic model for the spin-liquid candidate volborthite Cu3V2O7(OH)2(H2O)2. The essentials of this DFT-based model are (i) the orbital ordering of Cu(1) 3d 3z2-r2 and Cu(2) 3d 3x2-y2, (ii) three relevant couplings J_ic, J_1 and J_2, (iii) the ferromagnetic nature of J_1 and (iv) frustration governed by the next-nearest-neighbor exchange interaction J_2. Our model implies magnetism of frustrated coupled chains in contrast to the previously proposed anisotropic kagome model. Exact diagonalization studies reveal agreement with experiments.

The incarnation of the Nersesyan-Tsvelik model in (NO)[Cu(NO3)3]

The topology of the magnetic interactions of the copper spins in the nitrosonium nitratocuprate (NO)[Cu(NO3)3] suggests that it could be a realization of the Nersesyan-Tsvelik model, whose ground state was argued to be either a resonating valence bond (RVB) state or a valence bond crystal (VBC). The measurement of thermodynamic and resonant properties reveals a behavior inherent to low dimensional spin S = 1/2 systems and provides indeed no evidence for the formation of long-range magnetic order down to 1.8 K.

Two dimensional frustrated magnets in high magnetic field

Frustrated magnets in high magnetic field have a long history of offering beautiful surprises to the patient investigator. Here we present the results of extensive classical Monte Carlo simulations of a variety of models of two dimensional magnets in magnetic field, together with complementary spin wave analysis. Striking results include (i) a massively enhanced magnetocaloric effect in antiferromagnets bordering on ferromagnetic order, (ii) a route to an $m=1/3$ magnetization plateau on a square lattice, and (iii) a cascade of phase transitions in a simple model of AgNiO$_2$.

Thermodynamic properties of the Spin-1/2 Heisenberg Antiferromagnet with Anisotropic Exchange on the Kagome Lattice: Comparison with Volborthite

Thermodynamic properties such as magnetic susceptibility and specific heat have been computed for the Heisenberg Antiferromagnet with spatially anisotropic exchange on the kagome lattice on clusters up to N=24 spins from the full spectra obtained by exact diagonalization. This approach is shown to provide a good represention of these thermodynamic properties above temperatures of about $J_{\rm av}/5$ where $J_{\rm av}$ is an average of the coupling constants. Comparison with experimental Volborthite data obtained by Hiroi {\it {et al}} [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. {\bf 70},3377 (2001)] shows that Volborthite is best described by a model with nearly isotropic exchanges in spite of the significant distortion of the kagomé lattice of magnetic sites in this compound and suggests that additional interactions are present. Comparison of the specific heat at low temperature raise the possibility that the density of states at low energy in Volborthite might be much lower than in the Heisenberg model. Magnetization curves under an applied field of the model are also investigated. The M=1/3 plateau is found to subsist in the anisotropic case and extend to lower field with increased anisotropy. For sufficient anisotropy, this plateau would then be observable for a field reasonably accessible to experiment. The absence of a plateau well below $\sim$ 70 Teslas would further support a nearly isotropic model.

Two Step Restoration of SU(2) Symmetry in a Frustrated Ring-Exchange Magnet

We demonstrate the existence of a spin-nematic, moment-free phase in a quantum four-spin ring exchange model on the square lattice. This unusual quantum state is created by the interplay of frustration and quantum fluctuations which lead to a partial restoration of SU(2) symmetry when going from a four-sublattice orthogonal biaxial Neel order to this exotic uniaxial magnet. A further increase of frustration drives a transition to a fully gapped SU(2) symmetric valence bond crystal.

Observation of a Transient Magnetization Plateau in a Quantum Antiferromagnet on the Kagome Lattice

The magnetization process of an S=1/2 antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice, [Cu_3(titmb)_2(OCOCH_3)_6]H_2O {titmb= 1,3,5-tris(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)-2,4,6 trimethylbenzene} has been measured at very low temperatures in both pulsed and steady fields. We have found a new dynamical behavior in the magnetization process: a plateau at one third of the saturation magnetization appears in the pulsed field experiments for intermediate sweep rates of the magnetic field and disappears in the steady field experiments. A theoretical analysis using exact diagonalization yields J_1=-19K and J_2=6K, for the nearest neighbor and second nearest neighbor interactions, respectively. This set of exchange parameters explains the very low saturation field and the absence of the plateau in the thermodynamic equilibrium as well as the two-peak feature in the magnetic heat capacity. Supported by numerical results we argue that a dynamical order by disorder phenomenon could explain the transient appearance of the 1/3 plateau in pulsed field experiments.

Spin-1/2 antiferromagnets in 2 dimensions

The properties of the groundstate and first excitations of 2dimensionnal quantum antiferromagnets are rapidly sketched. A special emphasis is put on the gapped phases: Valence Bond Crystals and the two types of Spin Liquids. New results on the spin susceptibility of small samples of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a kagomé lattice are displayed for comparison with Kagemaya {\it et al.} experimental result (this conference).

1-Dimensional behavior and sliding Luttinger liquid phase in a frustrated spin-1/2 crossed chain model: contribution of exact diagonalizations

Exact diagonalizations indicate that the effective 1-dimensional behavior (sliding Luttinger liquid phase) of the frustrated spin-1/2 crossed chain model, predicted by Starykh, Singh and Levine [Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 167203 (2002)], persists for a wide range of transverse couplings. The extension of the other phases (plaquette valence bond crystal and Néel long range order) is precised. No clear indication of a coexistence of these two phases is found, at variance with a suggestion of Sachdev and Park (cond-mat/0108214).

Quantum phases in two-dimensional frustrated spin-1/2 antiferromagnets

We describe four phases found in two-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets. Two of them display long range order at T=0: the Néel state and the Valence Bond Crystal. The last two are Spin-Liquids. Properties of these different states are shortly described and likely conditions of their occurence outlined.

The planar pyrochlore: a Valence Bond Crystal

Exact diagonalizations of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on the checkerboard lattice have been performed for sizes up to N=36 in the full Hilbert space and N=40 in the restricted subspace of first neighbor dimers. This antiferromagnet does not break SU(2) symmetry and displays long range order in 4-spin S=0 plaquettes. Both the symmetry properties of the spectrum and various correlations functions are extensively studied. At variance with the kagom{é} antiferromagnet, the Heisenberg quantum model on a checkerboard lattice is a Valence Bond Crystal. Some results concerning the 3-dimensionnal spin-1/2 pyrochlore magnet (for sizes 16 and 32) are also shown: this system could behave differently from its 2-dimensional analog.

An investigation of the quantum $J_1-J_2-J_3$ model on the honeycomb lattice

We have investigated the quantum $J_1-J_2-J_3$ model on the honeycomb lattice with exact diagonalizations and linear spin-wave calculations for selected values of $J_{2}/J_{1}$, $J_{3}/J_{1}$ and antiferromagnetic ($J_{1}>0$) or ferromagnetic ($J_{1}<0$) nearest neighbor interactions. We found a variety of quantum effects: "order by disorder" selection of a N{é}el ordered ground-state, good candidates for non-classical ground-states with dimer long range order or spin-liquid like. The purely antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model is confirmed to be N{é}el ordered. Comparing these results with those observed on the square and triangular lattices, we enumerate some conjectures on the nature of the quantum phases in the isotropic models.

Some remarks on the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem and its extension to higher dimensions

The extension of the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem to dimensions larger than one is discussed. It is explained why the variational wave-function built by the previous authors is of no help to prove the theorem in dimension larger than one. The short range R.V.B. picture of Sutherland, Rokhsar and Kivelson, Read and Chakraborty gives a strong support to the assertion that the theorem is indeed valid in any dimension. Some illustrations of the general ideas are displayed on exact spectra.

First excitations of the spin 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the kagomé lattice

We study the exact low energy spectra of the spin 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on small samples of the kagomé lattice of up to N=36 sites. In agreement with the conclusions of previous authors, we find that these low energy spectra contradict the hypothesis of Néel type long range order. Certainly, the ground state of this system is a spin liquid, but its properties are rather unusual. The magnetic ($ΔS=1$) excitations are separated from the ground state by a gap. However, this gap is filled with nonmagnetic ($ΔS=0$) excitations. In the thermodynamic limit the spectrum of these nonmagnetic excitations will presumably develop into a gapless continuum adjacent to the ground state. Surprisingly, the eigenstates of samples with an odd number of sites, i.e. samples with an unsaturated spin, exhibit symmetries which could support long range chiral order. We do not know if these states will be true thermodynamic states or only metastable ones. In any case, the low energy properties of the spin 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the kagomé lattice clearly distinguish this system from either a short range RVB spin liquid or a standard chiral spin liquid. Presumably they are facets of a generically new state of frustrated two-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets.

Order versus Disorder in the Quantum Heisenberg Antiferromagnet on the Kagom{é} lattice: an approach through exact spectra analysis

A group symmetry analysis of the low lying levels of the spin-1/2 kagomé Heisenberg antiferromagnet is performed for small samples up to N=27. This approach allows to follow the effect of quantum fluctuations when the sample size increases. The results contradict the scenario of ``order by disorder'' which has been advanced on the basis of large S calculations. A large enough second neighbor ferromagnetic exchange coupling is needed to stabilize the $\sqrt 3 \times \sqrt 3$ pattern: the finite size analysis indicates a quantum critical transition at a non zero coupling.
