Complex biphase nature of the superconducting dome of the FeSe phase diagram

Single crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction as a function of temperature and pressure has revealed a complex biphase mixture in superconducting FeSe. Based on our experimental results we construct a phase diagram where structural behavior and superconducting properties of FeSe are found to be correlated. We show that below 6 GPa, where pressure promotes the superconducting critical temperature, the FeSe structure is composed of 2D layers of edge-shared FeSe4 tetrahedra, while above 6 GPa the superconductivity is strongly suppressed on formation of a new orthorhombic polymorph characterized by a 3D network of face sharing FeSe6 octahedra. Therefore changes in topology and connectivity of the FeSe structure are found to be detrimental for superconductivity to exist. This previously controversial crystal structure of the high pressure polymorph of FeSe was also unambiguously determined. High pressure FeSe adopts an orthorhombic MnP-type structure (Pnma) which corresponds to a slightly distorted hexagonal NiAs-type arrangement (P63/mmc). The structural transformation from the low- to high-pressure FeSe polymorph is first order in nature and is manifested as antiparallel displacements within the Fe and Se sublattices.

Pressure dependence of superconducting critical temperature and upper critical field of 2H-NbS2

We present measurements of the superconducting critical temperature Tc and upper critical field Hc2 as a function of pressure in the transition metal dichalcogenide 2H-NbS2 up to 20 GPa. We observe that Tc increases smoothly from 6K at ambient pressure to about 8.9K at 20GPa. This range of increase is comparable to the one found previously in 2H-NbSe2. The temperature dependence of the upper critical field Hc2(T) of 2H-NbS2 varies considerably when increasing the pressure. At low pressures, Hc2(0) decreases, and at higher pressures both Tc and Hc2(0) increase simultaneously. This points out that there are pressure induced changes of the Fermi surface, which we analyze in terms of a simplified two band approach.

Comment on "Precision global measurements of London penetration depth in FeTe$_{0.58}$Se$_{0.42}$"

Cho et al. [Phys. Rev. B, 84, 174502 (2011)] have reported on the temperature dependence of the London penetration depth deduced from Tunnel Diode Oscillator (TDO) measurements in optimally doped Fe(Se,Te) single crystals. According to their analysis, these measurements chould suggest a nodeless two-gap pairing symmetry with strong pair breaking effects. However, to reach this conclusion, the authors fit the temperature dependence of the superfluid density with a two band {\it clean} limit model which is incompatible with the presence of strong pair breaking effects, deduced from the $T^n$ temperature dependence of the London penetration depth below $T_c/3$. Moreover they claim that their results are also ruling out the suggestion that surface conditions can significantly affect the TDO data but this conclusion is based on one very specific damaging process, and is completely ignoring the large dispersion in the previously published TDO data.

Scanning microscopies of superconductors at very low temperatures

We discuss basics of scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/S) of the superconducting state with normal and superconducting tips. We present a new method to measure the local variations in the Andreev reflection amplitude between a superconducting tip and the sample. This method is termed Scanning Andreev Reflection Spectroscopy (SAS). We also briefly discuss vortex imaging with STM/S under an applied current through the sample, and show the vortex lattice as a function of the angle between the magnetic field and sample's surface.

Chiral charge order in the superconductor 2H-TaS2

We find chiral charge order in the superconductor 2H-TaS2 using Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and Spectroscopy (STM/S) at 0.1 K. Topographic images show hexagonal atomic lattice and charge density wave (CDW) with clockwise and counterclockwise charge modulations. Tunneling spectroscopy reveals the superconducting density of states, disappearing at Tc = 1.75 K and showing a wide distribution of values of the superconducting gap, centered around \Delta=0.28 meV.

Superconducting energy gap in MgCNi3 single crystals: Point-contact spectroscopy and specific-heat measurements

Specific heat has been measured down to 600 mK and up to 8 Tesla by the highly sensitive AC microcalorimetry on the MgCNi3 single crystals with Tc ~ 7 K. Exponential decay of the electronic specific heat at low temperatures proved that a superconducting energy gap is fully open on the whole Fermi surface, in agreement with our previous magnetic penetration depth measurements on the same crystals. The specific-heat data analysis shows consistently the strong coupling strength 2D/kTc ~ 4. This scenario is supported by the direct gap measurements via the point-contact spectroscopy. Moreover, the spectroscopy measurements show a decrease in the critical temperature at the sample surface accounting for the observed differences of the superfluid density deduced from the measurements by different techniques.

Specific-heat measurements of superconducting NbS2 single crystal in an external magnetic field: Study on the energy gap structure

The heat capacity of a 2H-NbS2 single crystal has been measured by a highly sensitive ac technique down to 0.6 K and in magnetic fields up to 14 T. At very low temperatures data show excitations over an energy gap (2DS/kBTc \approx 2.1) much smaller than the BCS value. The overall temperature dependence of the electronic specific heat Ce can be explained either by the existence of a strongly anisotropic single-energy gap or within a two-gap scenario with the large gap about twice bigger than the small one. The field dependence of the Sommerfeld coefficient shows a strong curvature for both principal-field orientations, parallel and perpendicular to the c axis of the crystal, resulting in a magnetic field dependence of the superconducting anisotropy. These features are discussed in comparison to the case of MgB2 and to the data obtained by scanning-tunneling spectroscopy. We conclude that the two-gap scenario better describes the gap structure of NbS2 than the anisotropic s-wave model.

Crystal growth, structure and ferromagnetic properties of a Ce3Pt23Si11 single crystal

A high-quality single crystal of Ce3Pt23Si11 has been grown using the Czochralski method. The crystal structure is presented and the chemical composition has been checked using an electron microprobe analyzer. Measurements of the electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility performed at low temperature show a ferromagnetic transition at Tc = 0.44 K.

Superconducting density of states and vortex cores of 2H-NbS2

Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/S) measurements in the superconducting dichalcogenide 2H-NbS2 show a peculiar superconducting density of states with two well defined features at 0.97 meV and 0.53 meV, located respectively above and below the value for the superconducting gap expected from single band s-wave BCS model (D=1.76kBTc=0.9 meV). Both features have a continuous temperature evolution and disappear at Tc = 5.7 K. Moreover, we observe the hexagonal vortex lattice with radially symmetric vortices and a well developed localized state at the vortex cores. The sixfold star shape characteristic of the vortex lattice of the compound 2H-NbSe2 is, together with the charge density wave order (CDW), absent in 2H-NbS2.

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy with superconducting tips of Al

We present Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy measurements at 0.1 K using tips made of Al. At zero field, the atomic lattice and charge density wave of 2HNbSe2 are observed, and under magnetic fields the peculiar electronic surface properties of vortices are precisely resolved. The tip density of states is influenced by the local magnetic field of the vortex, providing for a new probe of the magnetic field at nanometric sizes.

Penetration depth study of superconducting gap structure of 2\textit{H}-NbSe$_2$

We report measurements of the temperature dependence of both in-plane and out-of-plane penetration depths ($λ_a$ and $λ_c$ respectively) in 2\textit{H}-NbSe$_2$. Measurements were made with a radio-frequency tunnel diode oscillator circuit at temperatures down to 100 mK. Analysis of the anisotropic superfluid density shows that a reduced energy gap is located on one or more of the quasi-two-dimensional Nb Fermi surface sheets rather than on the Se sheet, in contrast to some previous reports. This result suggests that the gap structure is not simply related to the weak electron-phonon coupling on the Se sheet and is therefore important for microscopic models of anisotropic superconductivity in this compound.

Characterisation of high energy electron irradiation damage in UPt3 samples

We present transport and specific heat measurements on high quality single crystals of UPt$_3$ before and after irradiation by high energy electrons. We observe a strong dependence of the critical temperature with the sample thickness. The dramatic effects of the irradiation on the specific heat in the superconducting state can then be simply explained in terms of an inhomogeneous distribution of superconducting transition temperatures. The question of the failure of the "universal limit" in the heat transport of UPt3 is reexamined, and the conditions for a clean experimental test are established.
