Hubble drift in Palatini $f(\mathcal{R})$-theories

In a Palatini $f(\mathcal{R})$-model, we define chonodynamical effects due to the choice of atomic clocks as standard reference clocks and we develop a formalism able to quantitatively separate them from the usual effective dark sources one has in extended theories. We apply the formalism to Hubble drift and briefly discuss the issue about the physical frame. In particular, we argue that there is no physical frame in the sense one does different things in different frames and that, in a sense, is the physical characteristic of extended gravity. As an example, we discuss how Jordan frame may be well suited to discuss cosmology, though it fails within the solar system.

A New Statistic for Analyzing Baryon Acoustic Oscillations

We introduce a new statistic omega_l for measuring and analyzing large-scale structure and particularly the baryon acoustic oscillations. omega_l is a band-filtered, configuration space statistic that is easily implemented and has advantages over the traditional power spectrum and correlation function estimators. Unlike these estimators, omega_l can localize most of the acoustic information into a single dip at the acoustic scale while also avoiding sensitivity to the poorly constrained large scale power (i.e., the integral constraint) through the use of a localized and compensated filter. It is also sensitive to anisotropic clustering through pair counting and does not require any binning. We measure the shift in the acoustic peak due to nonlinear effects using the monopole omega_0 derived from subsampled dark matter catalogues as well as from mock galaxy catalogues created via halo occupation distribution (HOD) modeling. All of these are drawn from 44 realizations of 1024^3 particle dark matter simulations in a 1h^{-1}Gpc box at z=1. We compare these shifts with those obtained from the power spectrum and conclude that the results agree. This indicates that any distance measurements obtained from omega_0 and P(k) will be consistent with each other. We also show that it is possible to extract the same amount of acoustic information using either omega_0 or P(k) from equal volume surveys.

Alternatives to Quintessence Model Building

We discuss the issue of toy model building for the dark energy component of the universe. Specifically, we consider two generic toy models recently proposed as alternatives to quintessence models, known as Cardassian expansion and the Chaplygin gas. We show that the former is enteriely equivalent to a class of quintessence models. We determine the observational constraints on the latter, coming from recent supernovae results and from the shape of the matter power spectrum. As expected, these restrict the model to a behaviour that closely matches that of a standard cosmological constant $Λ$.

Modified Median Statistics and Type Ia Supernova Data

The median statistic has recently been discussed by Gott \textit{et al.} as a more reliable alternative to the standard $χ^2$ likelihood analysis, in the sense of requiring fewer assumptions about the data and being almost as constraining. We apply this statistic to the currently available combined dataset of 92 distant type Ia supernovae, and also to a mock SNAP-class dataset. We find that the performances of the modified median and $χ^2$ statistics are comparable, particularly in the latter case. We further extend the work of Gott \textit{et al.} by modifying the median statistic to account for the number and size of sequences of consecutive points above or below the median. We also comment on how the performance of the statistic depends on the choice of free parameters that one is estimating.
