Modelling the braking "index'' of isolated pulsars

An isolated pulsar is a rotating neutron star possessing a high magnetic dipole moment that generally makes a finite angle with its rotation axis. As a consequence, the emission of magnetic dipole radiation (MDR) continuously takes away its rotational energy. This process leads to a time decreasing angular velocity of the star that is usually quantified in terms of its braking index. While this simple mechanism is indeed the main reason for the spin evolution of isolated pulsars, it may not be the only cause of this effect. Most of young isolated pulsars present braking index values that are consistently lower than that given by the MDR model. Working in the weak field (Newtonian) limit, we take in the present work a step forward in describing the evolution of such a system by allowing the star's shape to wobble around an ellipsoidal configuration as a backreaction effect produced by the MDR emission. It is assumed that an internal damping of the oscillations occurs, thus introducing another form of energy loss in the system, and this phenomenon may be related to the deviation of the braking index from the pure MDR model predictions. Numerical calculations suggest that the average braking index for typical isolated pulsars can be thus simply explained.

Observing alternatives to inflation

We discuss the possibility that the inflationary paradigm, undoubtfully today's best framework to understand all the present cosmological data, may still have some viable challengers. The underlying idea for such discussions is that although inflation already passed quite a large number of tests, indeed enough to make it part of the so-called ``standard model'' of cosmology, it has always been through indirect measurements: there is not a chance that we may ever directly check its validity, and therefore, in order to assert its factuality with increasing level of confidence, it is required that we compare its predictions not only to observations, but also to as many contenders as possible. Among other categories of possible models, we wish to put the emphasis in particular on bouncing cosmologies that, however not as complete as the inflation paradigm might be, could still represent a reasonnable way of explaining the current data. Hopefully, future data will be able to discriminate between these various sets of theories.

Spectra of primordial fluctuations in two-perfect-fluid regular bounces

We introduce analytic solutions for a class of two components bouncing models, where the bounce is triggered by a negative energy density perfect fluid. The equation of state of the two components are constant in time, but otherwise unrelated. By numerically integrating regular equations for scalar cosmological perturbations, we find that the (would be) growing mode of the Newtonian potential before the bounce never matches with the the growing mode in the expanding stage. For the particular case of a negative energy density component with a stiff equation of state we give a detailed analytic study, which is in complete agreement with the numerical results. We also perform analytic and numerical calculations for long wavelength tensor perturbations, obtaining that, in most cases of interest, the tensor spectral index is independent of the negative energy fluid and given by the spectral index of the growing mode in the contracting stage. We compare our results with previous investigations in the literature.

Localisation of massive fermions on the brane

We construct an explicit model to describe fermions confined on a four dimensional brane embedded in a five dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime. We extend previous works to accommodate massive bound states on the brane and exhibit the transverse structure of the fermionic fields. We estimate analytically and calculate numerically the fermion mass spectrum on the brane, which we show to be discrete. The confinement life-time of the bound states is evaluated, and it is shown that existing constraints can be made compatible with the existence of massive fermions trapped on the brane for durations much longer than the age of the Universe.

Fermionic current-carrying cosmic strings: zero-temperature limit and equation of state

The equation of state for a superconducting cosmic string whose current is due to fermionic zero modes is derived analytically in the case where the back-reaction of the fermions to the background is neglected. It is first shown that the zero mode fermions follow a zero temperature distribution because of their interactions (or lack thereof) with the string-forming Higgs and gauge fields. It is then found that the energy per unit length U and the tension T are related to the background string mass m through the simple relation U+T=2m*m. Cosmological consequences are briefly discussed.

Evidence against or for topological defects in the BOOMERanG data ?

The recently released BOOMERanG data was taken as ``contradicting topological defect predictions''. We show that such a statement is partly misleading. Indeed, the presence of a series of acoustic peaks is perfectly compatible with a non-negligible topological defects contribution. In such a mixed perturbation model (inflation and topological defects) for the source of primordial fluctuations, the natural prediction is a slightly lower amplitude for the Doppler peaks, a feature shared by many other purely inflationary models. Thus, for the moment, it seems difficult to rule out these models with the current data.

Lorentz gauge fixing and lattice QED

The Gribov ambiguity problem is studied for compact lattice QED within the Lorentz gauge. In the Coulomb phase, Gribov copies are mainly caused by double Dirac sheets and zero-momentum modes of the gauge fields. Removing them by (non-) periodic gauge transformations allows to reach the absolute extremum of the Lorentz gauge functional. For standard Lorentz gauge fixing the Wilson fermion correlator turns out to be strongly effected by the zero-momentum modes. A reliable fermion mass estimate requires the proper treatment of these modes.

Fermionic correlators and zero-momentum modes in quenched lattice QED

For the Lorentz gauge the influence of various Gribov gauge copies on the fermion propagator is investigated in quenched compact lattice QED. Within the Coulomb phase besides double Dirac sheets the zero-momentum modes of the gauge fields are shown to cause the propagator to deviate strongly from the perturbatively expected behaviour. The standard way to extract the fermion mass fails. The recently proposed zero-momentum Lorentz gauge is demonstrated to cure the problem.

Current-carrying string loop motion: Limits on the classical description and shocks

The dynamical evolution of superconducting cosmic strings is much more complicated than that of simple Goto-Nambu strings. For this reason, there are only a few known analytical solutions and no numerical ones. The goal of this paper is to present numerical solutions for the dynamics of planar superconducting cosmic string loops. In most cases, a purely dynamical approach turns out to be insufficient to describe correctly the evolution of a loop due mainly to the appearance of shocks when spacelike currents are present and kinks for timelike currents, leading to yet unaccounted for quantum effects. The consequences of the quantum effects are mostly unknown at this time because the problem requires a dynamical field theory treatment. It is however likely that ultimately the result will be massive radiation in the form of charge carriers from the string.

Lorentz gauge and Gribov ambiguity in the compact lattice U(1) theory

The Gribov ambiguity problem is studied for compact U(1) lattice theory within the Lorentz gauge. In the Coulomb phase, it is shown that apart from double Dirac sheets all gauge (i.e. Gribov) copies originate mainly from the zero-momentum modes of the gauge fields. The removal of the zero-momentum modes turns out to be necessary for reaching the absolute maximum of the gauge functional $F(θ)$. A new gauge fixing procedure - zero-momentum Lorentz gauge - is proposed.

Bound states in monopoles: sources for UHECR ?

Bound states in monopoles are studied through a simplified, Witten-like model. As the overall structure is determined in full details, it is shown in particular that only those states having a vanishing angular momentum are allowed; for those, the energy spectrum is derived numerically and an approximation is set up that allows an easy description in terms of wavefunctions, usefull for further applications. The monopoles are then proposed as candidates of ultra high energy cosmic rays, an hypothesis that should soon be testable through the Pierre Auger Observatory.

Global vs local cosmic strings from pseudo-anomalous U(1)

We study the structure of cosmic strings produced at the breaking of an anomalous U(1) gauge symmetry present in many superstring compactification models. We show that their coupling with the axion necessary in order to cancel the anomalies does not prevent them from being local, even though their energy per unit length is found to diverge logarithmically. We discuss the formation of such strings and the phenomenological constraints that apply to their parameters.

Dynamical Stability of Witten Rings

The dynamical stability of cosmic rings, or vortons, is investigated for the particular equation of state given by the Witten bosonic model. It is found that there exists a finite range of the state parameter for which the vorton states are actually stable against dynamical perturbations. Inclusion of the electromagnetic self action into the equation of state slightly shrinks the stability region but otherwise yields no qualitative difference. If the Witten bosonic model represents a good approximation for more realistic string models, then the cosmological vorton excess problem can only be solved by assuming either that strings are formed at low energy scales or that some quantum instability may develop at a sufficient rate.

Confrontation of Double-Inflationary Models with Observations

We consider double-inflationary models with two noninteracting scalar fields, a light scalar field $\phi_l$ with potential $\frac{1}{2}m_l^2\phi_l^2$ and a heavy scalar field $\phi_h$ with potential $\frac{\lambda}{n}\phi_h^n$ with $n=2,4$. CDM with the initial spectrum of adiabatic perturbations produced in these models is compared with observations. These models contain two more free parameters than the standard CDM model with an initial scale-invariant spectrum. We normalize our spectra to COBE DMR and compare the predictions with observations on the biasing factor, large-scale peculiar velocities, quasar and galaxy formation and the Stromlo-APM counts-in-cells analysis. The model with $n=4$ is excluded by the data while for the $n=2$ model, taking cosmic variance into account, a small window of parameters compatible with observations is found.
