On the thermal phase structure of QCD at vanishing chemical potentials

The hypothesis is investigated, that the thermal structure of QCD phases at and near zero chemical potentials is determined by long range coherence, inducing the gauge boson pair condensate, and its thermal extension, representing a fundamental order parameter. The condensate does not produce any latent heat as it vanishes at the critical temperature inducing a second order phase transition with respect to energy density neglecting eventual numerically small critical exponents. Localization and delocalization of color fields are thus separated by a unique critical temperature.

Can the gamma-gamma processes reveal the nature of the sigma ?

We reanalyse the gamma-gamma scattering data and conclude that in the mass region below 1 GeV the cross section for gamma-gamma to pi^0-pi^0 can be largely explained by the one pion exchange process with pi-pi rescattering. The radiative width of the sigma is estimated and a model dependent separation into contributions from direct gamma-gamma decay and decay through rescattering is obtained. We confront these findings with QCD spectral sum rule (QSSR) predictions and conclude that the sigma can have a large gluonium component in its wave function.

Absorption of solar radiation by solar neutrinos

We calculate the absorption probability of photons radiated from the surface of the Sun by a left-handed neutrino with definite mass and a typical momentum for which we choose |p_1|=0.2 MeV, producing a heavier right-handed antineutrino. Considering two transitions the ν_1 -> ν_2 and ν_2 -> ν_3 we obtain two oscillation lengths L_{12}=4960.8 m, L_{23}=198.4 m, two absorption probabilities P_{12}^{abs.}=2.5 10^{-67}, P_{23}^{abs.}=1.2 10^{-58} and the two absorption ranges R_{12}^{abs.}=4.47 10^4 R_{\odot}=208.0 au, R_{23}^{abs.}=0.89 10^4 R_{\odot}=41.4 au, using a neutrino mass differences of \sqrt{|Δm^2_{12}|}=10 meV, \sqrt{|Δm^2_{23}|}=50 meV and associated transition dipole moments. We collect all necessary theoretical ingredients, i.e. neutrino mass and mixing scheme, induced electromagnetic transition dipole moments, quadratic charged lepton mass asymmetries and their interdependence.

No Supersymmetry without Supergravity: Induced Supersymmetry Representations on Composite Effective Fields

Induced supersymmetry representations on composite operators are studied. In superspace the ensuing transformation rules (trivially) lead to an effective superfield. On the other hand, an induced representation must exist for non-linear (``on-shell'') supersymmetry as well. As this choice of the representation is physically irrelevant, any formulation of an effective action starting from the superspace representation must equally well be possible in a non-linear representation. We show that this leads to very relevant constraints on the formulation of effective actions in terms of composite operators. These ideas are applied to the simplest case of such a theory, N=1 SYM. It is shown that soft supersymmetry breaking within that theory forces one to include besides the Lagrangian multiplet S all currents of the super-conformal structure, embedded in a supergravity background, as relevant fields.

On the Effective Description of Dynamically Broken SUSY-Theories

We introduce a new class of effective actions describing dynamically broken supersymmetric theories in an essentially non-perturbative region. Our approach is a generalization of the known supersymmetric non-linear sigma models, but allows in contrast to the latter the description of dynamical supersymmetry breaking by non-perturbative non-semiclassical effects. This non-perturbative breaking mechanism takes place in confined theories, where the effective fields are composite operators. It is necessary within the context of quantum effective actions and the associated concept of symmetry breaking as a hysteresis effect. In this paper we provide a mathematical definition and description of the actions, its application to specific supersymmetic gauge theories is presented elsewhere.

SUSY Glue-Balls, Dynamical Symmetry Breaking and Non-Holomorphic Potentials

We discuss the instability of the Veneziano-Yankielowicz effective action (or its supersymmetric ground-state) with respect to higher order derivative terms. As such terms must be present in an effective action, the V-Y action alone cannot describe the dynamics of SYM consistently. We introduce an extension of this action, where all instabilities are removed by means of a much richer structure of the Kaehler potential. We demonstrate that the dominant contributions to the effective potential are determined by the non-holomorphic part of the action and we prove that the non-perturbative ground-state can be equipped with stable dynamics. Making an expansion near the resulting ground-state to second order in the derivatives never leads back to the result by Veneziano and Yankielowicz. As a consequence new dynamical effects arise, which are interpreted as the formation of massive states in the boson sector (glueballs) and are accompanied by dynamical supersymmetry breaking. As this regime of the dynamics is not captured by standard semi-classical analysis (instantons etc.), our results do not contradict these calculations but investigate the physics of the system beyond these approximations.

Exceptional Confinement in G(2) Gauge Theory

We study theories with the exceptional gauge group G(2). The 14 adjoint "gluons" of a G(2) gauge theory transform as {3}, {3bar} and {8} under the subgroup SU(3), and hence have the color quantum numbers of ordinary quarks, anti-quarks and gluons in QCD. Since G(2) has a trivial center, a "quark" in the {7} representation of G(2) can be screened by "gluons". As a result, in G(2) Yang-Mills theory the string between a pair of static "quarks" can break. In G(2) QCD there is a hybrid consisting of one "quark" and three "gluons". In supersymmetric G(2) Yang-Mills theory with a {14} Majorana "gluino" the chiral symmetry is Z(4)_χ. Chiral symmetry breaking gives rise to distinct confined phases separated by confined-confined domain walls. A scalar Higgs field in the {7} representation breaks G(2) to SU(3) and allows us to interpolate between theories with exceptional and ordinary confinement. We also present strong coupling lattice calculations that reveal basic features of G(2) confinement. Just as in QCD, where dynamical quarks break the Z(3) symmetry explicitly, G(2) gauge theories confine even without a center. However, there is not necessarily a deconfinement phase transition at finite temperature.

Confinement without a center: the exceptional group G(2)

We discuss theories with the exceptional centerless gauge group G(2), paying attention to confinement and the pattern of chiral symmetry breaking. Exploiting the Higgs mechanism to break the symmetry down to SU(3), we also present how the familiar features of confinement and chiral symmetry breaking of SU(3) gauge theories reemerge. G(2) gauge theories show up as an unusual theoretical framework to study SU(3) gauge theories without the ``luxury'' of a center.

Elastic Scattering of Neutrinos off Polarized Electrons

We calculate the cross sections for elastic nu_l + e -> nu_l + e and antinu_l + e -> antinu_l + e scattering (l=e, mu or tau) in the Born approximation and with exactly fixed polarization states of target and final-state electrons, discussing their sensitivity to the incident (anti)neutrino flavor. We suggest investigation of the flavor composition of a (anti)neutrino beam by a flux-independent analysis of the scattering of its constituents off polarized electrons.

On simple and subtle properties of neutrinos

Neutrino flavors, light and heavy, are discussed in their interdependence within the minimal unifying gauge group of SO10. The general situation which excludes the existence of an {\it exact} symmetry from which {\it exactly} vanishing light neutrino masses would follow is discussed. {\it Subtle} and {\it simple} consequences for 'low-low' oscillation phenomena are presented in a general framework.

Dynamical Symmetry Breaking and Static Limits of Extended Super-Yang-Mills Theories: A non-Seiberg-Wittian Approach

From a supersymmetry covariant source extension of N=2 SYM we study non-trivial thermodynamical limits thereof. Using an argument by one of us about the solution of the strong CP problem and the uniqueness of the QCD ground state we find that the dependence of the effective potential on the defining field operators is severely restricted. In contrast to the solution by Seiberg and Witten an acceptable infrared behavior only exists for broken supersymmetry while the gauge symmetry remains unbroken.

Glueball production in hadron and nucleus collisions

We elaborate on the hypothesis that in high energy hadron hadron and nucleus nucleus collisions the lowest mass glueballs are copiously produced from the gluon rich environment especially at high energy density. We discuss the particular glueball decay modes: $0^{++}, 2^{++} \to K \bar{K}$ and $0^{++} \to π^{+} π^{-} \ell^{+} \ell^{-}$.

Deacay and scattering amplitudes are not the same

We study the lowest lying $π^+ π^-$ resonance R, bound by the long range Coulomb potential and destabilized by short range strong interactions mediating the dominant decay into two neutral pions. Parametrizing the corresponding partial decay width by $Γ(R \to 2 π^0) = 2/9 α^3 \sqrt{m_{π^+}^2 - m_{π^0}^2} (Δa_{D} m_{π^+})^2$ the quantity $Δa_{D}$ depends within QCD & QED on four basic parameters : $Λ_{QCD}, m_{u} + m_{d}, α, m_{d}- m_{u}$. We are interested here only in the limit where the last two parameters vanish $Δa_{D}^{0} = Δa_{D} (Λ_{QCD}, m_{u} + m_{d}, α= 0, m_{d} - m_{u} = 0)$. While isospin invariance implies $Δa_{D}^{0} = a_{D}^{I = 0} - a_{D}^{I = 2}$ it is shown that beyond the first order expansion in the strong interaction the identities $a_{D}^{I} = a^{I}$, where $a^{I}$ denote the strong interaction scattering lengths, do not hold.

On the Spontaneous Identity of Chiral and Super Symmetry Breaking in Pure Super Yang Mills Theories

We show that in supersymmetric pure Yang Mills theories with arbitrary simple gauge group, the spontaneous breaking of chiral fermionic and bosonic charge by the associated gaugino and gauge boson condensates implies the spontaneous breaking of supersymmetry by the condensate of the underlying Lagrangian density. The explicit breaking of the restricted fermionic charge through the chiral anomaly is deferred to a secondary stage in the elimination of infrared singularities or long range forces.

Note on the Mass Square of the Eta' Meson

We propose to use as a mathematical tool to study the mass square of the etaprime meson an infinitely heavy supplementary quark flavor Q. This is understood in the framework of QCD with one light quark flavor (or n_fl light flavors) and the gauge group SU3 colour (or SUN colour). The full system thus consists of n_fl + 1 flavors, including the infinitely heavy one. The purpose of this note is to show how the heavy flavor can be made to represent the anomalies of the subtheory describing the remnant physical degrees of freedom. In the large N_c limit the mass square of etaprime tends to a finite limit. The essential deviations from (semi) perturbative derivations are related to simple properties of the 'heavy' flavor.

A Search for Very High Energy Neutrinos from Active Galactic Nuclei

We report the results of a search for neutrino-induced particle cascades using a deep ocean water Cherenkov detector. The effective mass of the detector, a string of seven 40 cm diameter photomultipliers at 5.2 m spacing, is found through simulation analysis to be surprisingly large: greater than 1 megaton of water at incident neutrino energies of 1 PeV. We find no evidence for neutrino-induced cascades in 18.6 hours of observation. Although the limit implied by this observation is the strongest yet for predictions of active galatic nuclei (AGN) neutrinos at energies above 100 TeV, perhaps the more intriguing result is that the power of these techniques can be exploited to test these AGN models in a relatively short time.

Status of Supersymmetric Grand Unified Theories

We begin with a brief discussion of the building blocks of supersymmetric grand unified theories. We recall some of the compelling theoretical reasons for viewing supersymmetric grand unification as an attractive avenue for physics beyond the standard model. This is followed by a discussion of some of the circumstantial evidence for these ideas.
