Phonon localization in surface-roughness dominated nanowires

Studies of possible localization of phonons in nanomaterials have gained importance in recent years in the context of thermoelectricity where phonon-localization can reduce thermal conductivity, thereby improving the efficiency of thermoelectric devices. However, despite significant efforts, phonon-localization has not yet been observed experimentally in real materials. Here we propose that surface-roughness dominated nanowires are ideal candidates to observe localization of phonons, and show numerically that the space and time evolution of the energy generated by a heat-pulse injected at a given point shows clear signatures of phonon localization. We suggest that the same configuration might allow experimental observation of localization of phonons. Our results confirm the universality in the surface-roughness dominated regime proposed earlier, which allows us to characterize the strength of disorder by a single parameter combining the width of the wire as well as the mean height of the corrugation and its correlation length.

Resonant scattering of two-dimensional honeycomb PT dipole structure

We studied numerically electromagnetic response of the finite periodic structure consisting of the ${\cal{PT}}$ dipoles represented by two infinitely long, parallel cylinders with the opposite sign of the imaginary part of a refractive index which are centered at the positions of two-dimensional honeycomb lattice. We observed that the total scattered energy reveals series of sharp resonances at which the energy increases by two orders of magnitude and an incident wave is scattered only in a few directions given by spatial symmetry of periodic structure. We explain this behavior by analysis of the complex frequency spectra associated with an infinite honeycomb array of the ${\cal{PT}}$ dipoles and identify the lowest resonance with the broken ${\cal{PT}}$-symmetry mode formed by a doubly degenerate pair with complex conjugate eigenfrequencies corresponding to the $K$-point of the reciprocal lattice.

Universality of phonon transport in surface-roughness dominated nanowires

We analyze, both theoretically and numerically, the temperature dependent thermal conductivity \k{appa} of two-dimensional nanowires with surface roughness. Although each sample is characterized by three independent parameters - the diameter (width) of the wire, the correlation length and strength of the surface corrugation - our theory predicts that there exists a universal regime where \k{appa} is a function of a single combination of all three model parameters. Numerical simulations of propagation of acoustic phonons across thin wires confirm this universality and predict a d 1/2 dependence of \k{appa} on the diameter d.

Disordered two-dimensional electron systems with chiral symmetry

We review the results of our recent numerical investigations on the electronic properties of disordered two dimensional systems with chiral unitary, chiral orthogonal, and chiral symplectic symmetry. Of particular interest is the behavior of the density of states and the logarithmic scaling of the smallest Lyapunov exponents in the vicinity of the chiral quantum critical point in the band center at E=0. The observed peaks or depressions in the density of states, the distribution of the critical conductances, and the possible non-universality of the critical exponents for certain chiral unitary models are discussed.

Scaling at chiral quantum critical points in two dimensions

We study the localization properties of electrons moving on two-dimensional bi-partite lattices in the presence of disorder. The models investigated exhibit a chiral symmetry and belong to the chiral orthogonal (chO), chiral symplectic (chS) or chiral unitary (chU) symmetry class. The disorder is introduced via real random hopping terms for chO and chS, while complex random phases generate the disorder in the chiral unitary model. In the latter case an additional spatially constant, perpendicular magnetic field is also applied. Using a transfer-matrix-method, we numerically calculate the smallest Lyapunov exponents that are related to the localization length of the electronic eigenstates. From a finite-size scaling analysis, the logarithmic divergence of the localization length at the quantum critical point at E=0 is obtained. We always find for the critical exponent κ, which governs the energy dependence of the divergence, a value close to 2/3. This result differs from the exponent κ=1/2 found previously for a chiral unitary model in the absence of a constant magnetic field. We argue that a strong constant magnetic field changes the exponent κwithin the chiral unitary symmetry class by effectively restoring particle-hole symmetry even though a magnetic field induced transition from the ballistic to the diffusive regime cannot be fully excluded.

On the role of the symmetry parameter $β$ in the strongly localized regime

The generalization of the Dorokhov-Mello-Pereyra-Kumar equation for the description of transport in strongly disordered systems replaces the symmetry parameter $β$ by a new parameter $γ$, which decreases to zero when the disorder strength increases. We show numerically that although the value of $γ$ strongly influences the statistical properties of transport parameters $Δ$ and of the energy level statistics, the form of their distributions always depends on the symmetry parameter $β$ even in the limit of strong disorder. In particular, the probability distribution is $p(Δ)\sim Δ^β$ when $Δ\to 0$ and $p(Δ) \sim \exp (-cΔ^2)$ in the limit $Δ\to\infty$.

Two-dimensional electron systems beyond the diffusive regime

Transport properties of disordered electron system can be characterized by the conductance, Lyapunov exponent, or level spacing. Two additional parameters, $K_{11}$ and $γ$ were introduced recently which measure the non-homogeneity of the spatial distribution of the electron inside the sample. % [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 82}, 4272 (1999)]. For the orthogonal, unitary and symplectic two dimensional disordered models, we investigate numerically the system size dependence of these parameters in the diffusive and localized regime. Obtained size and disorder dependence of $K_{11}$ and $γ$ is in agreement with with single parameter transport theory. In the localized regime, $γ\to 0$ independently on the physical symmetry of the model. In the diffusive regime, $γ$ equals to the symmetry parameter $β$. For the symplectic model we analyze the size dependence of $γ$ in the critical region of the metal-insulator transition and found the non-universal critical value $γ_c$.

Logarithmic scaling of Lyapunov exponents in disordered chiral two-dimensional lattices

We analyze the scaling behavior of the two smallest Lyapunov exponents for electrons propagating on two-dimensional lattices with energies within a very narrow interval around the chiral critical point at E=0 in the presence of a perpendicular random magnetic flux. By a numerical analysis of the energy and size dependence we confirm that the two smallest Lyapunov exponents are functions of a single parameter. The latter is given by ln L/ln xi(E), which is the ratio of the logarithm of the system width L to the logarithm of the correlation length xi(E). Close to the chiral critical point and energy |E| << E_0, we find a logarithmically divergent energy dependence lnxi(E)proporitonal to |\ln(E_0/|E|)|^{1/2}, where E_0 is a characteristic energy scale. Our data are in agreement with the theoretical prediction of M. Fabrizio and C. Castelliani [Nucl.\Phys.B 583, 542 (2000)] and resolve an inconsistency of previous numerical work.

Electron transport in strongly disordered structures

Using the transfer matrix technique, we investigate the propagation of electron through a two dimensional disordered sample. We find that the spatial distribution of electrons is homogeneous only in the limit of weak disorder (diffusive transport regime). In the limit of very strong disorder, we identify a narrow channel through which the electron propagates from one side of the sample to the opposite side. Even in this limit, we prove the wave character of the electron propagation.

Disorder-driven splitting of the conductance peak at the Dirac point in graphene

The electronic properties of a bricklayer model, which shares the same topology as the hexagonal lattice of graphene, are investigated numerically. We study the influence of random magnetic-field disorder in addition to a strong perpendicular magnetic field. We found a disorder-driven splitting of the longitudinal conductance peak within the narrow lowest Landau band near the Dirac point. The energy splitting follows a relation which is proportional to the square root of the magnetic field and linear in the disorder strength. We calculate the scale invariant peaks of the two-terminal conductance and obtain the critical exponents as well as the multifractal properties of the chiral and quantum Hall states. We found approximate values $ν\approx 2.5$ for the quantum Hall states, but $ν=0.33\pm 0.1$ for the divergence of the correlation length of the chiral state at E=0 in the presence of a strong magnetic field. Within the central $n=0$ Landau band, the multifractal properties of both the chiral and the split quantum Hall states are the same, showing a parabolic $f[α(s)]$ distribution with $α(0)=2.27\pm 0.02$. In the absence of the constant magnetic field, the chiral critical state is determined by $α(0)=2.14\pm 0.02$.

Character of eigenstates of the 3D disordered Anderson Hamiltonian

We study numerically the character of electron eigenstates of the three dimensional disordered Anderson model. Analysis of the statistics of inverse participation ratio as well as numerical evaluation of the electron-hole correlation function confirm that there are no localized states below the mobility edge, as well as no metallic state in the tail of the conductive band. We discuss also finite size effects observed in the analysis of all the discussed quantities.

Critical conductance of two-dimensional chiral systems with random magnetic flux

The zero temperature transport properties of two-dimensional lattice systems with static random magnetic flux per plaquette and zero mean are investigated numerically. We study the two-terminal conductance and its dependence on energy, sample size, and magnetic flux strength. The influence of boundary conditions and of the oddness of the number of sites in the transverse direction is also studied. We confirm the existence of a critical chiral state in the middle of the energy band and calculate the critical exponent nu=0.35 +/- 0.03 for the divergence of the localization length. The sample averaged scale independent critical conductance _c turns out to be a function of the amplitude of the flux fluctuations whereas the variance of the respective conductance distributions appears to be universal. All electronic states outside of the band center are found to be localized.

Generalized DMPK equation for strongly localized regime - numerical solution

Generalized Dorokhov-Mello-Pereyra-Kumar (GDMPK) equation [K. A. Muttalib and J. R. Klauder, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 82}, 4272 (1999)] has been proposed for the description of the electron transport in strongly localized systems. We develop an algorithm for the numerical solution of this equation and confirm that GDMPK equation correctly describes the critical and localized regimes. Contrary to the original DMPK equation, the generalized one contains also an information about the dimension of the system. In particular, it distinguishes between the two and the three dimensional models with the same number of transmission channels.

Universality of the metal-insulator transition in three-dimensional disordered systems

The universality of the metal-insulator transition in three-dimensional disordered system is confirmed by numerical analysis of the scaling properties of the electronic wave functions. We prove that the critical exponent $ν$ and the multifractal dimensions $d_q$ are independent on the microscopic definition of the disorder and universal along the critical line which separates the metallic and the insulating regime.

Critical regime of two dimensional Ando model: relation between critical conductance and fractal dimension of electronic eigenstates

The critical two-terminal conductance $g_c$ and the spatial fluctuations of critical eigenstates are investigated for a disordered two dimensional model of non-interacting electrons subject to spin-orbit scattering (Ando model). For square samples, we verify numerically the relation $σ_c=1/[2π(2-D(1))] e^2/h$ between critical conductivity $σ_c=g_c=(1.42\pm 0.005) e^2/h$ and the fractal information dimension of the electron wave function, $D(1)=1.889\pm 0.001$. Through a detailed numerical scaling analysis of the two-terminal conductance we also estimate the critical exponent $ν=2.80\pm 0.04$ that governs the quantum phase transition.

Impact of the inherent periodic structure on the effective medium description of left-handed and related meta-materials

We study the frequency dependence of the effective electromagnetic parameters of left-handed and related meta-materials of the split ring resonator and wire type. We show that the reduced translational symmetry (periodic structure) inherent to these meta-materials influences their effective electromagnetic response. To anticipate this periodicity, we formulate a periodic effective medium model which enables us to distinguish the resonant behavior of electromagnetic parameters from effects of the periodicity of the structure. We use this model for the analysis of numerical data for the transmission and reflection of periodic arrays of split ring resonators, thin metallic wires, cut wires as well as the left-handed structures. The present method enables us to identify the origin of the previously observed resonance/anti-resonance coupling as well as the occurrence of negative imaginary parts in the effective permittivities and permeabilities of those materials. Our analysis shows that the periodicity of the structure can be neglected only for the wavelength of the electromagnetic wave larger than 30 space periods of the investigated structure.

Conductance distribution in 3D Anderson insulators: deviation from log-normal form

We show how a recent proposal to obtain the distribution of conductances in three dimensions (3D) from a generalized Fokker-Planck equation for the joint probability distribution of the transmission eigenvalues can be implemented for all strengths of disorder by numerically evaluating certain correlations of transfer matrices. We then use this method to obtain analytically, for the first time, the 3D conductance distribution in the insulating regime and provide a simple understanding of why it differs qualitatively from the log-normal distribution of a quasi one-dimensional wire.
