QCD Challenges from pp to A-A Collisions

This paper is a write-up of the ideas that were presented, developed and discussed at the third International Workshop on QCD Challenges from pp to A-A, which took place in August 2019 in Lund, Sweden. The goal of the workshop was to focus on some of the open questions in the field and try to come up with concrete suggestions for how to make progress on both the experimental and theoretical sides. The paper gives a brief introduction to each topic and then summarizes the primary results.

Thermodynamic properties of nuclear matter with three-body forces

We calculate thermodynamic quantities in symmetric nuclear matter within the self-consistent Green's functions method including three-body forces. The thermodynamic potential is computed directly from a diagrammatic expansion, implemented with the CD-Bonn and Nijmegen nucleon-nucleon potentials and the Urbana three-body forces. We present results for entropy and pressure up to temperatures of 20 MeV and densities of 0.32 fm^-3. While the pressure is sensitive to the inclusion of three-body forces, the entropy is not. The unstable spinodal region is identified and the critical temperature associated to the liquid-gas phase transition is determined. When three-body forces are added we find a strong reduction of the critical temperature, obtaining T_c ~ 12 MeV.

Viscosity and dissipation - early stages

A very early start up time of the hydrodynamic evolution is needed in order to reproduce observations from relativistic heavy-ion collisions experiments. At such early times the systems is still not locally equilibrated. Another source of deviations from local equilibrium is the viscosity of the fluid. We study these effects at very early times to obtain a dynamical prescription for the transition from an early 2-dimensional expansion to a nearly equilibrated 3-dimensional expansion at latter stages. The role of viscosity at latter stages of the evolution is also illustrated.

In medium T-matrix for nuclear matter with three-body forces - binding energy and single particle properties

We present spectral calculations of nuclear matter properties including three-body forces. Within the in-medium T-matrix approach, implemented with the CD-Bonn and Nijmegen potentials plus the three-nucleon Urbana interaction, we compute the energy per particle in symmetric and neutron matter. The three-body forces are included via an effective density dependent two-body force in the in-medium T-matrix equations. After fine tuning the parameters of the three-body force to reproduce the phenomenological saturation point in symmetric nuclear matter, we calculate the incompressibility and the energy per particle in neutron matter. We find a soft equation of state in symmetric nuclear matter but a relatively large value of the symmetry energy. We study the the influence of the three-body forces on the single-particle properties. For symmetric matter the spectral function is broadened at all momenta and all densities, while an opposite effect is found for the case of neutrons only. Noticeable modification of the spectral functions are realized only for densities above the saturation density. The modifications of the self-energy and the effective mass are not very large and appear to be strongly suppressed above the Fermi momentum.

Dissipation in the very early stage of the hydrodynamic evolution in relativistic heavy ion collisions

We propose a modification of the hydrodynamic model of the dynamics in ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions. A modification of the energy-momentum tensor at the initial stage describes the lack of isotropization of the pressure. Subsequently, the pressure is relaxing towards the equilibrium isotropic form in the local comoving frame. Within the Bjorken scaling solution a bound is found on the decay time of the initial anisotropy of the energy-momentum tensor. For the strongest dissipative effect allowed, we find a relative entropy increase of about 30%, a significant hardening of the transverse momentum spectra, and no effect on the HBT radii.

Thermodynamic properties of nuclear matter at finite temperature

A self-consistent approach based on finite temperature Green's functions is used to investigate thermodynamic properties of nuclear matter. The internal energy is derived from the diagrams associated to the interaction energy. Pressure and entropy up to T=20 MeV are obtained from the generating functional form of the thermodynamic potential.

Diagrammatic calculation of thermodynamical quantities in nuclear matter

In medium T-matrix calculations for symmetric nuclear matter at zero and finite temperatures are presented. The internal energy is calculated from the Galitskii-Koltun's sum rule and from the summation of the diagrams for the interaction energy. The pressure at finite temperature is obtained from the generating functional form of the thermodynamic potential. The entropy at high temperature is estimated and compared to expressions corresponding to a quasiparticle gas.

Event-by-event pT fluctuations and multiparticle clusters in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

We explore the dependence of the pT correlations in the event-by-event analysis of relativistic heavy-ion collisions at RHIC made recently by the PHENIX and STAR Collaborations. We point out that the observed scaling of strength of dynamical fluctuations with the inverse number of particles can be naturally explained by the formation of clusters. We argue that the large magnitude of the measured covariance implies that the clusters contain at least several particles. We also discuss whether the clusters may originate from jets. In addition, we provide numerical estimates of correlations coming from resonance decays and thermal clusters.

Spectral properties of nuclear matter

We review self-consistent spectral methods for nuclear matter calculations. The in-medium T-matrix approach is conserving and thermodynamically consistent. It gives both the global and the single-particle properties the system. The T-matrix approximation allows to address the pairing phenomenon in cold nuclear matter. A generalization of nuclear matter calculations to the superfluid phase is discussed and numerical results are presented for this case. The linear response of a correlated system going beyond the Hartree-Fock+Random-Phase-Approximation scheme is studied. The polarization is obtained by solving a consistent Bethe-Salpeter equation for the coupling of dressed nucleons to an external field. We find that multipair contributions are important for the spin(isospin) response when the interaction is spin(isospin) dependent.

Dynamical response functions in correlated fermionic systems

Response functions in nuclear matter at finite temperature are considered beyond the usual Hartree-Fock (HF) plus Random Phase Approximation (RPA) scheme. The contributions due to the propagator for the dressed nucleons and the corresponding vertex corrections are treated in a consistent way. For that purpose a semi-realistic Hamiltonian is developed with parameters adjusted to reproduce the nucleon self-energy as derived from realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions. For a scalar residual interaction the resulting response functions are very close to the RPA response functions. However, the collective modes, if present, get an additional width due to the coupling to multi-pair configurations. For isospin dependent residual interactions we find strong modifications of isospin response functions due to multi-pair contributions in the response function. Such a modification can lead to the disappearance of collective spin or isospin modes in a correlated system and shall have an effect on the absorption rate of neutrinos in nuclear matter.

Balance functions from a thermal model

A calculation of the pion balance functions in a thermal model is presented. The total result consists of resonance and non-resonance parts. A satisfactory agreement with the data on Au+Au collisions at 130 GeV is found.

Balance functions in a thermal model with resonances

The pi+ pi- balance function in rapidity is computed in a thermal model with resonances. It is found that the correlations from the neutral-resonance decays are important, yielding about a half of the total contribution, which in general consist of resonance and non-resonance parts. The model yields the pionic balance function a few per cent wider that what follows from the recent data for the Au+Au collisions at 130GeV.

Short-range correlations in asymmetric nuclear matter

The spectral function of protons in the asymmetric nuclear matter is calculated in the self-consistent T-matrix approach. The spectral function per proton increases with increasing asymmetry. This effect and the density dependence of the spectral function partially explain the observed increase of the spectral function with the mass number of the target nuclei in electron scattering experiments.

Dressed vertices

The response of a correlated nuclear system to an external field is discussed. The Bethe-Salpeter equation for the dressed vertex is solved. The kernel of the integral equation for the vertex is chosen consistently with the approximation for the self-energy. This guarantees the fulfillment of the f-sum rule for the response function.

In medium T matrix for neutron matter

We calculate the equation of state of pure neutron matter, comparing the G-matrix calculation with the in-medium T-matrix result. At low densities, we obtain similar energies per nucleon, however some differences appear at higher densities. We use the self-consistent spectral functions from the T-matrix approach to calculate the 1S0 superfluid gap including self-energy effects. We find a reduction of the superfluid gap by 30%.
