Stationary states of the cubic conformal flow on $\mathbb{S}^3$

We consider the resonant system of amplitude equations for the conformally invariant cubic wave equation on the three-sphere. Using the local bifurcation theory, we characterize all stationary states that bifurcate from the first two eigenmodes. Thanks to the variational formulation of the resonant system and energy conservation, we also determine variational characterization and stability of the bifurcating states. For the lowest eigenmode, we obtain two orbitally stable families of the bifurcating stationary states: one is a constrained maximizer of energy and the other one is a constrained minimizer of the energy, where the constraints are due to other conserved quantities of the resonant system. For the second eigenmode, we obtain two constrained minimizers of the energy, which are also orbitally stable in the time evolution. All other bifurcating states are saddle points of energy under these constraints and their stability in the time evolution is unknown.

Gravitational Solitons and the Squashed Seven-Sphere

We discuss some aspects of higher-dimensional gravitational solitons and kinks, including in particular their stability. We illustrate our discussion with the examples of (non-BPS) higher-dimensional Taub-NUT solutions as the spatial metrics in (6+1) and (8+1) dimensions. We find them to be stable against small but non-infinitesimal disturbances, but unstable against large ones, which can lead to black-hole formation. In (8+1) dimensions we find a continuous non-BPS family of asymptotically-conical solitons connecting a previously-known kink metric with the supersymmetric A_8 solution which has Spin(7) holonomy. All the solitonic spacetimes we consider are topologcally, but not geometrically, trivial. In an appendix we use the techniques developed in the paper to establish the linear stability of five-dimensional Myers-Perry black holes with equal angular momenta against cohomogeneity-2 perturbations.

Collapse of an Instanton

We construct a two parameter family of collapsing solutions to the 4+1 Yang-Mills equations and derive the dynamical law of the collapse. Our arguments indicate that this family of solutions is stable. The latter fact is also supported by numerical simulations.
