Magnetic ordering and dynamics in monolayers and bilayers of chromium trihalides: atomistic simulations approach

We analyze magnetic properties of monolayers and bilayers of chromium trihalides, CrI$_3$, in two different stacking configurations: AA and rhombohedral ones. Our main focus is on the corresponding Curie temperatures, hysteresis curves, equilibrium spin structures, and spin wave excitations. To obtain all these magnetic characteristic, we employ the atomistic spin dynamics and Monte Carlo simulation techniques. The model Hamiltonian includes isotropic exchange coupling, magnetic anisotropy, and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Though the latter is relatively weak in CrI$_3$, we consider a more general case assuming also an enhancement of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in the corresponding Janus structures and by external electric fields. An important issue of the analysis is the correlation between hysteresis curves and spin configurations in the system, as well as formation of the skyrmion textures.

Tetragonal CuMnAs alloy: role of defects

The antiferromagnetic (AFM) CuMnAs alloy with tetragonal structure is a promising material for the AFM spintronics. The resistivity measurements indicate the presence of defects about whose types and concentrations is more speculated as known. We confirmed vacancies on Mn or Cu sublattices and Mn$_{\rm Cu}$ and Cu$_{\rm Mn}$ antisites as most probable defects in CuMnAs by our new ab initio total energy calculations. We have estimated resistivities of possible defect types as well as resistivities of samples for which the X-ray structural analysis is available. In the latter case we have found that samples with Cu- and Mn-vacancies with low formation energies have also resistivities which agree well with the experiment. Finally, we have also calculated exchange interactions and estimated the N\'eel temperatures by using the Monte Carlo approach. A good agreement with experiment was obtained.

Nonlinear magnetotransport in dual spin valves

Recent experimental measurements of magnetoresistance in dual spin valves [A. Aziz et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 237203 (2009)] reveal some nonlinear features of transport, which have not been observed in other systems. We propose a phenomenological model describing current-dependent resistance (and giant magnetoresistance) in double spin valves. The model is based on a modified Valet-Fert approach, and takes into account the dependence of bulk/interface resistance and bulk/interface spin asymmetry parameters for the central magnetic layer on spin accumulation, and consequently on charge current. Such a nonlinear model accounts for recent experimental observations.

Computational study of microwave oscillations in absence of external field in nonstandard spin valves in the diffusive transport limit

An anomalous (inverse) spin accumulation in the nonmagnetic spacer may build up when the spin valve consists of magnetic films having different spin symmetries. This leads to wavy-like dependence of spin-transfer torque on the angle between magnetizations, as predicted by spin-dependent diffusive transport model, and also confirmed experimentally. Making use of these predictions, we have numerically studied the magnetization dynamics in presence of such a wavy-torque in Co(8 nm)/Cu(10 nm)/Py(8 nm) nanopillar, considering geometry with extended and etched Co layer. In both cases we specify conditions for the out-of-plane precession to appear in absence of external magnetic field and neglecting thermal fluctuations. We prove the assumption of wavy-like torque angular dependence to be fully consistent with experimental observations. We also show that some features reported experimentally, like nonlinear slope of frequency vs. current behavior, are beyond the applicability range of macrospin approximation and can be explained only by means of full micromagnetic analysis.

Breakdown of an intermediate plateau in the magnetization process of anisotropic spin-1 Heisenberg dimer: theory vs. experiment

The magnetization process of the spin-1 Heisenberg dimer model with axial and rhombic single-ion anisotropy terms is particularly investigated in connection with recent experimental high-field measurements performed on the single-crystal sample of the homodinuclear nickel(II) compound [Ni2(Medpt)2(ox)(H2O)2](ClO4)2.2H2O (Medpt=methyl-bis(3-aminopropyl)amine). The results obtained from the exact numerical diagonalization reveal a striking magnetization process with a marked spatial dependence on the applied magnetic field for arbitrary but non-zero single-ion anisotropy. It is demonstrated that the field range, which corresponds to an intermediate magnetization plateau emerging at a half of the saturation magnetization, basically depends on single-ion anisotropy terms as well as a spatial orientation of the applied field. The breakdown of the intermediate magnetization plateau is discussed at length in relation to the single-ion anisotropy strength.
