Mirror energy differences in T=1/2 f7/2-shell nuclei within isospin-dependent DFT

Background: Small asymmetry between neutrons and protons, caused by the differences in masses and charges of the up and down constituent quarks leads to the isospin symmetry breaking. The isospin non-conservation affects broad range of observables from superallowed Fermi weak interaction to isospin-forbidden electromagnetic rates. Its most profound and cleanest manifestation are systematic shifts in masses and excitation energies of mirror atomic nuclei. Purpose: Recently, we constructed the charge-dependent DFT that includes class II and III local interactions and demonstrated that the model allows for very accurate reproduction of Mirror and Triplet Displacement energies in a very broad range of masses. The aim of this work is to further test the charge-dependent functional by studying Mirror Energy Differences (MEDs) in function of angular momentum $I$. Methods: To compute MEDs we use DFT-rooted no core configuration interaction model. This post mean-field method restores rotational symmetry and takes into account configuration mixing within a space that includes relevant (multi)particle-(multi)hole Slater determinants. Results: We applied the model to $f_{7/2}$-shell mirror pairs of $A=43$, $45$, $47$, and $49$ focusing on MEDs in low-spin part (below band crossing) what allowed us to limit the model space to seniority one and three (one broken pair) configurations. Conclusions: We demonstrate that, for spins $I\leq 15/2$ being subject of the present study, our model reproduces well experimental MEDs which vary strongly in function of $I$ and $A$. The quality of model's predictions is comparable to the nuclear shell-model results by Bentley et al. Phys. Rev. C 92, 024310 (2015).

Isobaric Multiplet Mass Equation within nuclear Density Functional Theory

We extend the nuclear Density Functional Theory (DFT) by including proton-neutron mixing and contact isospin-symmetry-breaking (ISB) terms up to next-to-leading order (NLO). Within this formalism, we perform systematic study of the nuclear mirror and triple displacement energies, or equivalently of the Isobaric Multiplet Mass Equation (IMME) coefficients. By comparing results with those obtained within the existing Green Function Monte Carlo (GFMC) calculations, we address the fundamental question of the physical origin of the ISB effects. This we achieve by analyzing separate contributions to IMME coefficients coming from the electromagnetic and nuclear ISB terms. We show that the ISB DFT and GFMC results agree reasonably well, and that they describe experimental data with a comparable quality. Since the separate electromagnetic and nuclear ISB contributions also agree, we conclude that the beyond-mean-field electromagnetic effects may not play a dominant role in describing the ISB effects in finite nuclei.

No-core configuration-interaction model for the isospin- and angular-momentum-projected states

[Background] Single-reference density functional theory is very successful in reproducing bulk nuclear properties like binding energies, radii, or quadrupole moments throughout the entire periodic table. Its extension to the multi-reference level allows for restoring symmetries and, in turn, for calculating transition rates. [Purpose] We propose a new no-core-configuration-interaction (NCCI) model treating properly isospin and rotational symmetries. The model is applicable to any nucleus irrespective of its mass and neutron- and proton-number parity. It properly includes polarization effects caused by an interplay between the long- and short-range forces acting in the atomic nucleus. [Methods] The method is based on solving the Hill-Wheeler-Griffin equation within a model space built of linearly-dependent states having good angular momentum and properly treated isobaric spin. The states are generated by means of the isospin and angular-momentum projection applied to a set of low-lying (multi)particle-(multi)hole deformed Slater determinants calculated using the self-consistent Skyrme-Hartree-Fock approach. [Results] The theory is applied to calculate energy spectra in N~Z nuclei that are relevant from the point of view of a study of superallowed Fermi beta-decays. In particular, a new set of the isospin-symmetry-breaking corrections to these decays is given. [Conclusions] It is demonstrated that the NCCI model is capable to capture main features of low-lying energy spectra in light and medium-mass nuclei using relatively small model space and without any local readjustment of its low-energy coupling constants. Its flexibility and a range of applicability makes it an interesting alternative to the conventional nuclear shell model.

Beta-decay study within multi-reference density functional theory and beyond

Pioneering study of Gamow-Teller (GT) and Fermi matrix elements (MEs) using no-core-configuration-interaction formalism rooted in multi-reference density functional theory is presented. After successful test performed for 6He -> 6Li beta-decay, the model is applied to compute MEs in the sd- and pf-shell T=1/2 mirror nuclei. The calculated GT MEs and the isospin-symmetry-breaking corrections to the Fermi branch are found to be in a very good agreement with shell-model predictions in spite of fundamental differences between these models concerning model space, treatment of correlations or inclusion of a core. This result indirectly supports the two-body current based scenarios behind the quenching of axial-vector coupling constant.
