Convergence of Schr\"odinger operators on domains with scaled resonant potentials

We consider Schr\"odinger operators on a bounded, smooth domain of dimension $d \ge 2$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions and a properly scaled potential, which depends only on the distance to the boundary of the domain. Our aim is to analyse the convergence of these operators as the scaling parameter tends to zero. If the scaled potential is resonant, the limit in strong resolvent sense is a Robin Laplacian with boundary coefficient expressed in terms of the mean curvature of the boundary. A counterexample shows that norm resolvent convergence cannot hold in general in this setting. If the scaled potential is non-resonant and satisfies an explicit assumption on the smallness of the negative part, the limit in strong resolvent sense is the Dirichlet Laplacian. We conjecture that we can drop this additional assumption in the non-resonant case.

A distance between operators acting in different Hilbert spaces and operator convergence

The aim of the present article is to give an introduction to the concept of quasi-unitary equivalence and to define several (pseudo-)metrics on the space of self-adjoint operators acting possibly in different Hilbert spaces. As some of the ``metrics'' do not fulfill all properties of a metric (e.g. some lack the triangle inequality or the definiteness), we call them ``distances'' here. To the best of our knowledge, such distances are treated for the first time here. The present article shall serve as a starting point of further research (see e.g. arXiv:2412.13165).

Quasi-unitary equivalence and generalised norm resolvent convergence

The purpose of this article is to give a short introduction to the concept of quasi-unitary equivalence of quadratic forms and its consequences. In particular, we improve an estimate concerning the transitivity of quasi-unitary equivalence for forms. We illustrate the abstract setting by two classes of examples.

First order operators on shrinking graph-like spaces

In this article we discuss the convergence of first order operators on a thickened graph (a graph-like space) towards a similar operator on the underlying metric graph. On the graph-like space, the first order operator is of the form exterior derivative (the gradient) on functions and its adjoint (the negative divergence) on closed 1-forms (irrotational vector fields). Under the assumption that each cross section of the tubular edge neighbourhood is convex, that each vertex neighbourhood is simply connected and under suitable uniformity assumptions (which hold in particular, if the spaces are compact) we establish generalised norm resolvent convergence of the first order operator on the graph-like space towards the one on the metric graph. The square of the first order operator is of Laplace type; on the metric graph, the function (0-form) component is the usual standard (Kirchhoff) Laplacian. A key ingredient in the proof is a uniform Gaffney estimate: such an estimate follows from an equality relating here the divergence operator with all (weak) partial derivatives and a curvature term, together with a (localised) Sobolev trace estimate.

Manifolds with many small wormholes: norm resolvent and spectral convergence

We present results concerning the norm convergence of resolvents for wildperturbations of the Laplace-Beltrami operator. This article is a continuation of ouranalysis on wildly perturbed manifolds presented in [AP21]. We study here manifoldswith an increasing number of small (i.e., short and thin) handles added. The handlescan also be seen as wormholes, as they connect different parts being originally far away.We consider two situations: if the small handles are distributed too sparse the limitoperator is the unperturbed one on the initial manifold, the handles are fading. Onthe other hand, if the small handles are dense in certain regions the limit operator isthe Laplace-Beltrami operator acting on functions which are identical on the two partsjoined by the handles, the handles hence produce adhesion. Our results also apply tonon-compact manifolds. Our work is based on a norm convergence result for operatorsacting in varying Hilbert spaces described in the book [P12] by the second author.

Distances between operators acting on different Hilbert spaces

The aim of this article is to define and compare several distances (or metrics) between operators acting on different (separable) Hilbert spaces. We consider here three main cases of how to measure the distance between two bounded operators: first by taking the distance between their unitary orbits, second by isometric embeddings (this generalises a concept of Weidmann) and third by quasi-unitary equivalence (using a concept of the first author of the present article). Our main result is that the unitary and isometric distances are equal provided the operators are both self-adjoint and have $0$ in their essential spectra. Moreover, the quasi-unitary distance is equivalent (up to a universal constant) with the isometric distance for any pair of bounded operators. The unitary distance gives an upper bound on the Hausdorff distance of their spectrum. If both operators have purely essential spectrum, then the unitary distance equals the Hausdorff distance of their spectra. Using a finer spectral distance respecting multiplicity of discrete eigenvalues, this spectral distance equals the unitary distance also for operators with essential and discrete spectrum. In particular, all operator distances mentioned above are equal to this spectral distance resp. controlled by it in the quasi-unitary case for self-adjoint operators with $0$ in the essential spectrum. We also show that our results are sharp by presenting various (counter-)examples. Finally, we discuss related convergence concepts complementing results from our first article arXiv:2202.03234

The curious spectra and dynamics of non-locally finite crystals

This paper is devoted to the investigation of the spectral theory and dynamical properties of periodic graphs which are not locally finite but carry non-negative, symmetric and summable edge weights. These graphs are shown to exhibit rather intriguing behaviour: for example, we construct a periodic graph whose Laplacian has purely singular continuous spectrum. Regarding point spectrum, and different to the locally finite case, we construct a graph with a partly flat band whose eigenvectors must have infinite support. Concerning dynamical aspects, under some assumptions we prove that motion remains ballistic along at least one layer. We also construct a graph whose Laplacian has purely absolutely continuous spectrum, exhibits ballistic transport, yet fails to satisfy a dispersive estimate. This provides a negative answer to an open question in this context. Furthermore, we include a discussion of the fractional Laplacian for which we prove a phase transition in its dynamical behaviour. Generally speaking, many questions still remain open, and we believe that the studied class of graphs can serve as a playground to better understand exotic spectra and dynamics.

A geometric construction of isospectral magnetic graphs

We present a geometrical construction of families of finite isospectral graphs labelled by different partitions of a natural number $r$ of given length $s$ (the number of summands). Isospectrality here refers to the discrete magnetic Laplacian with normalised weights (including standard weights). The construction begins with an arbitrary finite graph $G$ with normalised weight and magnetic potential as a building block from which we construct, in a first step, a family of so-called frame graphs $(F_a)_{a \in \mathbb{N}}$. A frame graph $F_a$ is constructed contracting $a$ copies of $G$ along a subset of vertices $V_0$. In a second step, for any partition $A=(a_1,\dots,a_s)$ of length $s$ of a natural number $r$ (i.e., $r=a_1+\dots+a_s$) we construct a new graph $F_A$ contracting now the frames $F_{a_1},\dots,F_{a_s}$ selected by $A$ along a proper subset of vertices $V_1\subset V_0$. All the graphs obtained by different $s$-partitions of $r\geq 4$ (for any choice of $V_0$ and $V_1$) are isospectral and non-isomorphic. In particular, we obtain increasing finite families of graphs which are isospectral for given $r$ and $s$ for different types of magnetic Laplacians including the standard Laplacian, the signless standard Laplacian, certain kinds of signed Laplacians and, also, for the (unbounded) Kirchhoff Laplacian of the underlying equilateral metric graph. The spectrum of the isospectral graphs is determined by the spectrum of the Laplacian of the building block $G$ and the spectrum for the Laplacian with Dirichlet conditions on the set of vertices $V_0$ and $V_1$ with multiplicities determined by the numbers $r$ and $s$ of the partition.

Isospectral graphs via spectral bracketing

In this article, we develop a perturbative technique to construct families of non-isomorphic discrete graphs which are isospectral for the standard (also called normalised) Laplacian and its signless version. We use vertex contractions as a graph perturbation and spectral bracketing with auxiliary graphs which have certain eigenvalues with high multiplicity. There is no need to know explicitly the eigenvalues or eigenfunctions of the corresponding graphs. We illustrate the method by presenting several families of examples of isospectral graphs including fuzzy complete bipartite graphs and subdivision graphs obtained from the previous examples. All the examples constructed turn out to be also isospectral for the standard (Kirchhoff) Laplacian on the associated equilateral metric graph.

Generalised norm resolvent convergence: comparison of different concepts

In this paper, we show that the two concepts of generalised norm resolvent convergence introduced by Weidmann and the first author of this paper are equivalent. We also focus on the convergence speed and provide conditions under which the convergence speed is the same for both concepts. We illustrate the abstract results by a large number of examples.

A geometric approximation of $\delta$-interactions by Neumann Laplacians

We demonstrate how to approximate one-dimensional Schr\"odinger operators with $\delta$-interaction by a Neumann Laplacian on a narrow waveguide-like domain. Namely, we consider a domain consisting of a straight strip and a small protuberance with "room-and-passage" geometry. We show that in the limit when the perpendicular size of the strip tends to zero, and the room and the passage are appropriately scaled, the Neumann Laplacian on this domain converges in (a kind of) norm resolvent sense to the above singular Schr\"odinger operator. Also we prove Hausdorff convergence of the spectra. In both cases estimates on the rate of convergence are derived.

Matching number, Hamiltonian graphs and discrete magnetic Laplacians

In this article, we relate the spectrum of the discrete magnetic Laplacian (DML) on a finite simple graph with two structural properties of the graph: the existence of a perfect matching and the existence of a Hamiltonian cycle of the underlying graph. In particular, we give a family of spectral obstructions parametrised by the magnetic potential for the graph to be matchable (i.e., having a perfect matching) or for the existence of a Hamiltonian cycle. We base our analysis on a special case of the spectral preorder introduced in [FCLP20a] and we use the magnetic potential as a spectral control parameter.

Quantitative Sobolev extensions and the Neumann heat kernel for integral Ricci curvature conditions

We prove the existence of Sobolev extension operators for certain uniform classes of domains in a Riemannian manifold with an explicit uniform bound on the norm depending only on the geometry near their boundaries. We use this quantitative estimate to obtain uniform Neumann heat kernel upper bounds and gradient estimates for positive solutions of the Neumann heat equation assuming integral Ricci curvature conditions and geometric conditions on the boundary. Those estimates also imply quantitative lower bounds on the first Neumann eigenvalue of the considered domains.

Spectral preorder and perturbations of discrete weighted graphs

In this article, we introduce a geometric and a spectral preorder relation on the class of weighted graphs with a magnetic potential. The first preorder is expressed through the existence of a graph homomorphism respecting the magnetic potential and fulfilling certain inequalities for the weights. The second preorder refers to the spectrum of the associated Laplacian of the magnetic weighted graph. These relations give a quantitative control of the effect of elementary and composite perturbations of the graph (deleting edges, contracting vertices, etc.) on the spectrum of the corresponding Laplacians, generalising interlacing of eigenvalues. We give several applications of the preorders: we show how to classify graphs according to these preorders and we prove the stability of certain eigenvalues in graphs with a maximal d-clique. Moreover, we show the monotonicity of the eigenvalues when passing to spanning subgraphs and the monotonicity of magnetic Cheeger constants with respect to the geometric preorder. Finally, we prove a refined procedure to detect spectral gaps in the spectrum of an infinite covering graph.

Approximation of fractals by manifolds and other graph-like spaces

We define a distance between energy forms on a graph-like metric measure space and on a discrete weighted graph using the concept of quasi-unitary equivalence. We apply this result to metric graphs and graph-like manifolds (e.g. a small neighbourhood of an embedded metric graph) as metric measure spaces with energy forms associated with canonical Laplacians, e.g., the Kirchhoff Laplacian on a metric graph resp. the (Neumann) Laplacian on a manifold (with boundary) and express the distance of the associated energy forms in terms of geometric quantities. We showed in arXiv:1704.00064 that the approximating sequence of energy forms on weighted graphs used in the definition of an energy form on a pcf fractal converge in the sense that the distance in the quasi-unitary equivalence tends to 0. By transitivity of quasi-unitary equivalence, we conclude that we can approximate the energy form on a pcf fractal by a sequence of energy forms on metric graphs and graph-like manifolds. In particular, we show that there is a sequence of domains converging to a pcf fractal such that the corresponding (Neumann) energy forms converge to the fractal energy form. Quasi-unitary equivalence of energy forms implies a norm estimate for the difference of the resolvents of the associated Laplace operators. As a consequence, suitable functions of the Laplacians are close resp. converge as well in operator norm, e.g. the corresponding heat operators and spectral projections. The same is true for the spectra and the eigenfunctions in all above examples.

Wildly perturbed manifolds: norm resolvent and spectral convergence

Since the publication of the important work of Rauch and Taylor (Potential and scattering theory on wildly perturbed domains, JFA, 1975) a lot has been done to analyse wild perturbations of the Laplace operator. Here we present results concerning the norm convergence of the resolvent. We consider a (not necessarily compact) manifold with many small balls removed, the number of balls can increase as the radius is shrinking, the number of balls can also be infinite. If the distance of the balls shrinks less fast than the radius, then we show that the Neumann Laplacian converges to the unperturbed Laplacian, i.e., the obstacles vanish. In the Dirichlet case, we have two cases: if the balls are too sparse, the limit operator is again the unperturbed one, while if the balls concentrate at a certain region (they become "solid" in a region), the limit operator is the Dirichlet Laplacian on the complement outside the solid region. Our work is based on a norm convergence result for operators acting in varying Hilbert spaces developed by the second author.

On Open Scattering Channels for a Branched Covering of the Euclidean Plane

We study the interaction of two scattering channels for a simple geometric model consisting in a double covering of the plane with two branch points, equipped with the Euclidean metric. We show that the scattering channels are open in the sense of arXiv:1202.0333 and that this property is stable under suitable perturbations of the metric.

On a generalisation of Krein's example

We generalise a classical example given by Krein in 1953. We compute the difference of the resolvents and the difference of the spectral projections explicitly. We further give a full description of the unitary invariants, i.e., of the spectrum and the multiplicity. Moreover, we observe a link between the difference of the spectral projections and Hankel operators.
