Lattice measurement of α_s with a realistic charm quark

We report on an estimate of α_s, renormalised in the MSbar scheme at the tau and Z^0 mass scales, by means of lattice QCD. Our major improvement compared to previous lattice calculations is that, for the first time, no perturbative treatment at the charm threshold has been required since we have used statistical samples of gluon fields built by incorporating the vacuum polarisation effects of u/d, s and c sea quarks. Extracting α_s in the Taylor scheme from the lattice measurement of the ghost-ghost-gluon vertex, we obtain α_s^{MSbar}(m^2_Z)=0.1200(14) and α_s^{MSbar}(m^2_tau)=0.339(13).

Renormalisation constants of quark bilinears in lattice QCD with four dynamical Wilson quarks

We present preliminary results of the non-perturbative computation of the RI-MOM renormalisation constants in a mass-independent scheme for the action with Iwasaki glue and four dynamical Wilson quarks employed by ETMC. Our project requires dedicated gauge ensembles with four degenerate sea quark flavours at three lattice spacings and at several values of the standard and twisted quark mass parameters. The RI-MOM renormalisation constants are obtained from appropriate O(a) improved estimators extrapolated to the chiral limit.

Quark pseudoscalar vertex and quark mass function with clover fermions : spontaneous symmetry breaking, OPE, symmetry restoration at small volume

We study the quark mass function on hypercubic lattices, in a large range of physical volumes and cutoffs. To avoid the very large Wilson term artefact, we exploit the relation between the quark mass function and the pseudoscalar vertex in the continuum. We extrapolate to the chiral limit. In function of the physical volume, we observe a striking discontinuity in the properties of chiral extrapolation around a physical volume $L_c 6 (GeV}^{-1}=1.2 fm$. It is present in the quark mass function, which collapses to zero, as well as in the pion mass and the quark condensate as directly calculated from the pseudoscalar correlator. It is strongly reminiscent of the phenomenon of chiral symmetry restoration observed by Neuberger and Narayanan at $N_C=\infty$ around the same physical length. In the case of spontaneous symmetry breaking, we confirm that the OPE of the quark mass function, involving the quark condensate, is not operative at the available momenta, even taking into account the unusually large high order corrections to the Wilson coefficient calculated by Chetyrkin and Maier ; the gap remains large, around a factor 2, even at the largest momenta available to us (p \simeg GeV)

Simulation of the Lattice QCD and Technological Trends in Computation

Simulation of Lattice QCD is a challenging computational problem. Currently, technological trends in computation show multiple divergent models of computation. We are witnessing homogeneous multi-core architectures, the use of accelerator on-chip or off-chip, in addition to the traditional architectural models. On the verge of this technological abundance, assessing the performance trade-offs of computing nodes based on these technologies is of crucial importance to many scientific computing applications. In this study, we focus on assessing the efficiency and the performance expected for the Lattice QCD problem on representative architectures and we project the expected improvement on these architectures and their impact on performance for Lattice QCD. We additionally try to pinpoint the limiting factors for performance on these architectures.

IR finiteness of the ghost dressing function from numerical resolution of the ghost SD equation

We solve numerically the Schwinger-Dyson (SD hereafter) ghost equation in the Landau gauge for a given gluon propagator finite at k=0 (alpha_gluon=1) and with the usual assumption of constancy of the ghost-gluon vertex ; we show that there exist two possible types of ghost dressing function solutions, as we have previously inferred from analytical considerations : one singular at zero momentum, satisfying the familiar relation alpha_gluon+2 alpha_ghost=0 between the infrared exponents of the gluon and ghost dressing functions(in short, respectively alpha_G and alpha_F) and having therefore alpha_ghost=-1/2, and another which is finite at the origin (alpha_ghost=0), which violates the relation. It is most important that the type of solution which is realized depends on the value of the coupling constant. There are regular ones for any coupling below some value, while there is only one singular solution, obtained only at a critical value of the coupling. For all momenta k<1.5 GeV where they can be trusted, our lattice data exclude neatly the singular one, and agree very well with the regular solution we obtain at a coupling constant compatible with the bare lattice value.

The Infrared Behaviour of the Pure Yang-Mills Green Functions

We study the infrared behaviour of the pure Yang-Mills correlators using relations that are well defined in the non-perturbative domain. These are the Slavnov-Taylor identity for three-gluon vertex and the Schwinger-Dyson equation for ghost propagator in the Landau gauge. We also use several inputs from lattice simulations. We show that lattice data are in serious conflict with a widely spread analytical relation between the gluon and ghost infrared critical exponents. We conjecture that this is explained by a singular behaviour of the ghost-ghost-gluon vertex function in the infrared. We show that, anyhow, this discrepancy is not due to some lattice artefact since lattice Green functions satisfy the ghost propagator Schwinger-Dyson equation. We also report on a puzzle concerning the infrared gluon propagator: lattice data seem to favor a constant non vanishing zero momentum gluon propagator, while the Slavnov-Taylor identity (complemented with some regularity hypothesis of scalar functions) implies that it should diverge.

Non-perturbative Power Corrections to Ghost and Gluon Propagators

We study the dominant non-perturbative power corrections to the ghost and gluon propagators in Landau gauge pure Yang-Mills theory using OPE and lattice simulations. The leading order Wilson coefficients are proven to be the same for both propagators. The ratio of the ghost and gluon propagators is thus free from this dominant power correction. Indeed, a purely perturbative fit of this ratio gives smaller value ($\simeq 270$MeV) of $Λ_{\ms}$ than the one obtained from the propagators separately($\simeq 320$MeV). This argues in favour of significant non-perturbative $\sim 1/q^2$ power corrections in the ghost and gluon propagators. We check the self-consistency of the method.

Nuclear models on a lattice

We present the first results of a quantum field approach to nuclear models obtained by lattice techniques. Renormalization effects for fermion mass and coupling constant in case of scalar and pseudoscalar interaction lagrangian densities are discussed.

Pionic couplings (g^ and g~) in the static heavy quark limit

The couplings between the soft pion and the doublet of heavy-light mesons are basic parameters of the ChPT approach to the heavy-light systems. We compute the unquenched (Nf=2) values of two such couplings in the static heavy quark limit: (1) g^, coupling to the lowest doublet of heavy-light mesons, and (2) g~, coupling to the first orbital excitations. A brief description of the calculation together with a short discussion of the results is presented.

B_s-\bar{B_s} mixing with a chiral light quark action

We study the $B^0_s-\bar{B^0_s}$ mixing amplitude in Standard Model by computing the relevant hadronic matrix element in the static limit of lattice HQET with the Neuberger light quark action. In the quenched approximation, and after matching to the $\bar{\rm MS}$ scheme in QCD, we obtain $B^{\bar{\rm MS}}_{B_s}(m_b)=0.940(16)(22)$.

Suppressed decay into open charm for the Y(4260) being an hybrid

We investigate the Y(4260) resonance recently discovered by the Babar collaboration. We propose the observation of its decay into J/psi pi pi and its non observation into open charm as a consequence of it being a charmonium hybrid state with a magnetic constituent gluon. We prove a selection rule forbidding its decay into two S-wave charmed mesons in any potential model. We suggest a generalisation of the selection rule based only on the heavy quark nature of the charm.

Asymptotic behavior of the ghost propagator in SU3 lattice gauge theory

We study the asymptotic behavior of the ghost propagator in the quenched SU(3) lattice gauge theory with Wilson action. The study is performed on lattices with a physical volume fixed around 1.6 fm and different lattice spacings: 0.100 fm, 0.070 fm and 0.055 fm. We implement an efficient algorithm for computing the Faddeev-Popov operator on the lattice. We are able to extrapolate the lattice data for the ghost propagator towards the continuum and to show that the extrapolated data on each lattice can be described up to four-loop perturbation theory from 2.0 GeV to 6.0 GeV. The three-loop values are consistent with those extracted from previous perturbative studies of the gluon propagator. However the effective $Λ_{\ms}$ scale which reproduces the data does depend strongly upon the order of perturbation theory and on the renormalization scheme used in the parametrization. We show how the truncation of the perturbative series can account for the magnitude of the dependency in this energy range. The contribution of non-perturbative corrections will be discussed elsewhere.

Instanton traces in lattice gluon correlation functions

Strong coupling constant computed in Landau gauge and MOM renormalization scheme from lattice two and three gluon Green Functions exhibits an unexpected behavior in the deep IR, showing a maximum value around $1 {\rm GeV}$. We analise this coupling below this maximum within a semiclassical approach, were gluon degrees of freedom at very low energies are described in terms of the classical solutions of the lagrangian, namely instantons. We provide some new results concerning the relationship between instantons and the low energy dynamics of QCD, by analising gluon two- and three-point Green functions separately and with the help of a cooling procedure to eliminate short range correlations.

Lattice measurement of the Isgur-Wise functions tau_1/2 and tau_3/2

We propose a method to compute the Isgur-Wise form factors tau_1/2(1) and tau_3/2(1) for the decay of B mesons into orbitally excited (P wave) D** charmed mesons on the lattice in the static limit. We also present the result of an exploratory numerical simulation which shows that the signal/noise ratio allows for a more dedicated computation. We find tau_1/2(1)=0.38(5) and tau_3/2(1)= 0.53(8), with yet unknown systematic errors. These preliminary numbers agree fairly well with theoretical expectation.

apeNEXT: A multi-TFlops Computer for Simulations in Lattice Gauge Theory

We present the APE (Array Processor Experiment) project for the development of dedicated parallel computers for numerical simulations in lattice gauge theories. While APEmille is a production machine in today's physics simulations at various sites in Europe, a new machine, apeNEXT, is currently being developed to provide multi-Tflops computing performance. Like previous APE machines, the new supercomputer is largely custom designed and specifically optimized for simulations of Lattice QCD.
