Relativistic interaction of long-wavelength ultrashort laser pulses with nanowires

We report on experimental results in a new regime of a relativistic light-matter interaction employing mid-infrared (3.9-micrometer wavelength) high-intensity femtosecond laser pulses. In the laser generated plasma, the electrons reach relativistic energies already at rather low intensities due to the fortunate lambda^2-scaling of the kinetic energy with the laser wavelength. The lower intensity suppresses optical field ionization and creation of the pre-plasma at the rising edge of the laser pulse efficiently, enabling an enhanced efficient vacuum heating of the plasma. The lower critical plasma density for long-wavelength radiation can be surmounted by using nanowires instead of flat targets. In our experiments about 80% of the incident laser energy has been absorbed resulting in a long living, keV-temperature, high-charge state plasma with a density of more than three orders of magnitude above the critical value. Our results pave the way to laser-driven experiments on laboratory astrophysics and nuclear physics at a high repetition rate.

Half-lives of neutron-rich $^{128-130}$Cd

The $\beta$-decay half-lives of $^{128\text{--}130}$Cd have been measured with the newly commissioned GRIFFIN $\gamma$-ray spectrometer at the TRIUMF-ISAC facility. The time structures of the most intense $\gamma$-rays emitted following the $\beta$-decay were used to determine the half-lives of $^{128}$Cd and $^{130}$Cd to be $T_{1/2}= 246.2(21)$ ms and $T_{1/2}= 126(4)$ ms, respectively. The half-lives of the 3/2$^+$ and 11/2$^-$ states of $^{129}$Cd were measured to be $T_{1/2}(3/2^+)= 157(8)$ ms and $T_{1/2}(11/2^-)= 147(3)$ ms. The half-lives of the Cd isotopes around the $N=82$ shell closure are an important ingredient in astrophysical simulations to derive the magnitude of the second $r$-process abundance peak in the $A\sim130$ region. Our new results are compared with recent literature values and theoretical calculations.

Observing the sky at extremely high energies with the Cherenkov Telescope Array: Status of the GCT project

The Cherenkov Telescope Array is the main global project of ground-based gamma-ray astronomy for the coming decades. Performance will be significantly improved relative to present instruments, allowing a new insight into the high-energy Universe [1]. The nominal CTA southern array will include a sub-array of seventy 4 m telescopes spread over a few square kilometers to study the sky at extremely high energies, with the opening of a new window in the multi-TeV energy range. The Gamma-ray Cherenkov Telescope (GCT) is one of the proposed telescope designs for that sub-array. The GCT prototype recorded its first Cherenkov light on sky in 2015. After an assessment phase in 2016, new observations have been performed successfully in 2017. The GCT collaboration plans to install its first telescopes and cameras on the CTA site in Chile in 2018-2019 and to contribute a number of telescopes to the subsequent CTA production phase.

Developing a General algorithm for Ball Curve with GC2

This paper dwells in developing a general algorithm for constructing a piecewise Ball Curve with curvature continuity (GC2). The proposed algorithm requires GC2 data in which the designer must define unit tangent vectors and signed curvatures at each interpolating points. As a numerical example, a vase is constructed using GC2 piecewise Ball Curve
