How far are $d$-dimensional copulas with uniform $(d-1)$-marginals from (total) independence?

We consider the family ${\mathcal{C}}_d^{\Pi_{d-1}}$ of all $d$-dimensional copulas whose $(d-1)$-dimensional marginals are all equal to the $(d-1)$-dimensional product copula $\Pi_{d-1}$ and tackle the natural question, `how far away' from the $d$-dimensional product copula $\Pi_d$ elements in ${\mathcal{C}}_d^{\Pi_{d-1}}$ can be. We provide definitive answers for both, the uniform metric $d_\infty$ as well as the stronger, conditioning-based metric $D_1$. The established results clearly indicate that the family ${\mathcal{C}}_d^{\Pi_{d-1}}$ is larger than one might expect.

Discrete imprecise copulas and alternating sign matrices

In this paper, we study discrete quasi-copulas and discrete imprecise copulas of minimal range, which naturally correspond to alternating sign matrices. We show that this family is invariant under all defect transformations on quasi-copulas and give a constructive proof demonstrating that discrete imprecise copulas of minimal range do not, in general, avoid sure loss. In contrast, we show that discrete imprecise copulas of minimal range that correspond to dense alternating sign matrices are always coherent, and hence avoid sure loss.

Random discrete copulas

We introduce the notion of a bivariate random discrete copula on an equidistant mesh and explore its stochastic properties. A random discrete copula is a discrete random field, hence, its value at a given point on the mesh is a random variable. We determine the distribution of this random variable and calculate its expected value and variance. We also consider bilinear extension of a random discrete copula to a random field over the whole unit square.

Unital compressed commuting graph of $3 \times 3$ matrices over a finite prime field

In this paper we completely describe the unital compressed commuting graph of the ring $\mathcal{M}_3(\mathrm{GF}(p))$ of $3 \times 3$ matrices over the finite prime field $\mathrm{GF}(p)$. To achieve this we combine methods from linear algebra, field theory, projective geometry and combinatorics. We first partition the set of vertices into types based on the Jordan form and describe the neighborhood of each vertex. The key part of the graph, i.e., the subgraph that corresponds to non-scalar derogatory matrices, is then determined using a bijective correspondence between its vertices and point-line pairs in the projective plane over $\mathrm{GF}(p)$. At the end we explain how the remaining vertices are attached to the key part. We also give an algorithm to construct the whole graph. As a consequence, we describe the usual commuting graph $\Gamma(\mathcal{M}_3(\mathrm{GF}(p)))$, whose structure was an open problem for several years.

The exact region determined by Spearman's footrule, Gini's gamma and Kendall's tau

Concordance measures are used to express the degree of association between random variables. Practitioners may use several distinct concordance measures to narrow the space of possible dependence structures. Consequently, the relations between different (weak) concordance measures have been extensively studied in recent years. The goal of this paper is to study the relation between Kendall's tau, Gini's gamma and Spearman's footrule. In particular, we describe the exact region determined by these three measures, using shuffles of $M$ and ordinal sums of copulas. We also provide the formulas for five main (weak) concordance measures and Chatterjee's xi of ordinal sums of copulas.

When does an infinite ring have a finite compressed commuting graph?

We show that any infinite ring has an infinite nonunital compressed commuting graph. We classify all infinite unital rings with finite unital compressed commuting graph, using semidirect product of rings as our main tool. As a consequence we also classify infinite unital rings with only finitely many unital subrings.

Freedom in constructing quasi-copulas vs. copulas

The main goal of this paper is to study the extent of freedom one has in constructing quasi-copulas vs. copulas. Specifically, it exhibits three construction methods for quasi-copulas based on recent developments: a representation of multivariate quasi-copulas by means of infima and suprema of copulas, an extension of a classical result on shuffles of min to the setting of quasi-copulas, and a construction method for quasi-copulas obeying a given signed mass pattern on a patch.

Bivariate measure-inducing quasi-copulas

It is well known that every bivariate copula induces a positive measure on the Borel $\sigma$-algebra on $[0,1]^2$, but there exist bivariate quasi-copulas that do not induce a signed measure on the same $\sigma$-algebra. In this paper we show that a signed measure induced by a bivariate quasi-copula can always be expressed as an infinite combination of measures induced by copulas. With this we are able to give the first characterization of measure-inducing quasi-copulas in the bivariate setting.

Quasi-copulas as linear combinations of copulas

We prove that every quasi-copula can be written as a uniformly converging infinite sum of multiples of copulas. Furthermore, we characterize those quasi-copulas which can be written as a finite sum of multiples of copulas, i.e., that are a linear combination of two copulas. This generalizes a recent result of Fern\'{a}ndez-S\'{a}nchez, Quesada-Molina, and \'{U}beda-Flores who considered linear combinations of discrete copulas.

Compressed commuting graphs of matrix rings

In this paper we introduce compressed commuting graph of rings. It can be seen as a compression of the standard commuting graph (with the central elements added) where we identify the vertices that generate the same subring. The compression is chosen in such a way that it induces a functor from the category of rings to the category of graphs, which means that our graph takes into account not only the commutativity relation in the ring, but also the commutativity relation in all of its homomorphic images. Furthermore, we show that this compression is best possible for matrix algebras over finite fields, i.e., it compresses as much as possible while still inducing a functor. We compute the compressed commuting graphs of finite fields and rings of $2 \times 2$ matrices over finite fields.

Exact upper bound for copulas with a given diagonal section

We answer a 15-year-old open question about the exact upper bound for bivariate copulas with a given diagonal section by giving an explicit formula for this bound. As an application, we determine the maximal asymmetry of bivariate copulas with a given diagonal section and construct a copula that attains it. We derive a formula for the maximal asymmetry that is simple enough to be used by practitioners.

Coherence and avoidance of sure loss for standardized functions and semicopulas

We discuss avoidance of sure loss and coherence results for semicopulas and standardized functions, i.e., for grounded, 1-increasing functions with value $1$ at $(1,1,\ldots, 1)$. We characterize the existence of a $k$-increasing $n$-variate function $C$ fulfilling $A\leq C\leq B$ for standardized $n$-variate functions $A,B$ and discuss the method for constructing this function. Our proofs also include procedures for extending functions on some countably infinite mesh to functions on the unit box. We provide a characterization when $A$ respectively $B$ coincides with the pointwise infimum respectively supremum of the set of all $k$-increasing $n$-variate functions $C$ fulfilling $A\leq C\leq B$.

On the exact region determined by Spearman's rho and Spearman's footrule

We determine the lower bound for possible values of Spearman's rho of a bivariate copula given that the value of its Spearman's footrule is known and show that this bound is always attained. We also give an estimate for the exact upper bound and prove that the estimate is attained for some but not all values of Spearman's footrule. Nevertheless, we show that the estimate is quite tight.

A full scale Sklar's theorem in the imprecise setting

In this paper we present a surprisingly general extension of the main result of a paper that appeared in this journal: I. Montes et al., Sklar's theorem in an imprecise setting, Fuzzy Sets and Systems, 278 (2015), 48--66. The main tools we develop in order to do so are: (1) a theory on quasi-distributions based on an idea presented in a paper by R. Nelsen with collaborators; (2) starting from what is called (bivariate) $p$-box in the above mentioned paper we propose some new techniques based on what we call restricted (bivariate) $p$-box; and (3) a substantial extension of a theory on coherent imprecise copulas developed by M. Omladi\v{c} and N. Stopar in a previous paper in order to handle coherence of restricted (bivariate) $p$-boxes. A side result of ours of possibly even greater importance is the following: Every bivariate distribution whether obtained on a usual $\sigma$-additive probability space or on an additive space can be obtained as a copula of its margins meaning that its possible extraordinariness depends solely on its margins. This might indicate that copulas are a stronger probability concept than probability itself.

Final solution to the problem of relating a true copula to an imprecise copula

In this paper we solve in the negative the problem proposed in this journal (I. Montes et al., Sklar's theorem in an imprecise setting, Fuzzy Sets and Systems, 278 (2015), 48-66) whether an order interval defined by an imprecise copula contains a copula. Namely, if $\mathcal{C}$ is a nonempty set of copulas, then $\underline{C} = \inf\{C\}_{C\in\mathcal{C}}$ and $\overline{C}= \sup\{C\}_{C\in\mathcal{C}}$ are quasi-copulas and the pair $(\underline{C},\overline{C})$ is an imprecise copula according to the definition introduced in the cited paper, following the ideas of $p$-boxes. We show that there is an imprecise copula $(A,B)$ in this sense such that there is no copula $C$ whatsoever satisfying $A \leqslant C\leqslant B$. So, it is questionable whether the proposed definition of the imprecise copula is in accordance with the intentions of the initiators. Our methods may be of independent interest: We upgrade the ideas of Dibala et al. (Defects and transformations of quasi-copulas, Kybernetika, 52 (2016), 848-865) where possibly negative volumes of quasi-copulas as defects from being copulas were studied.

Structure theorem for generalized corner rings

We apply recent results on the rank of elements of rings to study the structure of generalized corner rings $aRa$, where $R$ is a unital ring and $a$ an element of $R$. We give a complete description of the structure of $aRa$ when $a^2$ has finite rank and provide an example to show that this assumption is necessary and optimal.

Compressed zero-divisor graphs of noncommutative rings

We extend the notion of the compressed zero-divisor graph $\varTheta(R)$ to noncommutative rings in a way that still induces a product preserving functor $\varTheta$ from the category of finite unital rings to the category of directed graphs. For a finite field $F$, we investigate the properties of $\varTheta(M_n(F))$, the graph of the matrix ring over $F$, and give a purely graph-theoretic characterization of this graph when $n \neq 3$. For $n \neq 2$ we prove that every graph automorphism of $\varTheta(M_n(F))$ is induced by a ring automorphism of $M_n(F)$. We also show that for finite unital rings $R$ and $S$, where $S$ is semisimple and has no homomorphic image isomorphic to a field, if $\varTheta(R) \cong \varTheta(S)$, then $R \cong S$. In particular, this holds if $S=M_n(F)$ with $n \neq 1$.

Rank of elements of general rings in connection with unit-regularity

We define the rank of elements of general unital rings, discuss its properties and give several examples to support the definition. In semiprime rings we give a characterization of rank in terms of invertible elements. As an application we prove that every element in the socle of a unital semiprime ring is unit-regular.
