Massive renormalization scheme and perturbation theory at finite temperature

We argue that the choice of an appropriate, massive, renormalization scheme can greatly improve the apparent convergence of perturbation theory at finite temperature. This is illustrated by the calculation of the pressure of a scalar field theory with quartic interactions, at 2-loop order. The result, almost identical to that obtained with more sophisticated resummation techniques, shows a remarkable stability as the coupling constant grows, in sharp contrast with standard perturbation theory.

Three-point correlation functions in Yang-Mills theory

We investigate the three-point correlation functions of Yang-Mills theory in the Landau gauge, with a particular emphasis on the infrared regime. The effect of the Gribov copies is accounted for by adding a mass term for the gluons in the Faddeev-Popov action in the Landau gauge. We perform a one-loop calculation for the ghost-antighost-gluon and three-gluon correlation functions. These analytic results are compared with the available lattice data and give a very satisfying agreement.

Some exact results in branching and annihilating random walks

We present some exact results on the behavior of Branching and Annihilating Random Walks, both in the Directed Percolation and Parity Conserving universality classes. Contrary to usual perturbation theory, we perform an expansion in the branching rate around the non trivial Pure Annihilation model, whose correlation and response function we compute exactly. With this, the non-universal threshold value for having a phase transition in the simplest system belonging to the Directed Percolation universality class is found to coincide with previous Non Perturbative Renormalization Group approximate results. We also show that the Parity Conserving universality class has an unexpected RG fixed point structure, with a PA fixed point which is unstable in all dimensions of physical interest.

Branching rate expansion around annihilating random walks

We present some exact results for branching and annihilating random walks. We compute the nonuniversal threshold value of the annihilation rate for having a phase transition in the simplest reaction-diffusion system belonging to the directed percolation universality class. Also, we show that the accepted scenario for the appearance of a phase transition in the parity conserving universality class must be improved. In order to obtain these results we perform an expansion in the branching rate around pure annihilation, a theory without branching. This expansion is possible because we manage to solve pure annihilation exactly in any dimension.

An Infrared Safe perturbative approach to Yang-Mills correlators

We investigate the 2-point correlation functions of Yang-Mills theory in the Landau gauge by means of a massive extension of the Faddeev-Popov action. This model is based on some phenomenological arguments and constraints on the ultraviolet behavior of the theory. We show that the running coupling constant remains finite at all energy scales (no Landau pole) for $d>2$ and argue that the relevant parameter of perturbation theory is significantly smaller than 1 at all energies. Perturbative results at low orders are therefore expected to be satisfactory and we indeed find a very good agreement between 1-loop correlation functions and the lattice simulations, in 3 and 4 dimensions. Dimension 2 is shown to play the role of an upper critical dimension, which explains why the lattice predictions are qualitatively different from those in higher dimensions.

Infrared propagators of Yang-Mills theory from perturbation theory

We show that the correlation functions of ghosts and gluons for the pure Yang-Mills theory in Landau gauge can be accurately reproduced for all momenta by a one-loop calculation. The key point is to use a massive extension of the Faddeev-Popov action. The agreement with lattice simulation is excellent in d=4. The one-loop calculation also reproduces all the characteristic features of the lattice simulations in d=3 and naturally explains the pecularities of the propagators in d=2.

A linear realization of the BRST symmetry

In this Letter, we propose a model which is equivalent to the Yang-Mills theory at long distances but for which all symmetries are realized linearly. On top of the gauge and Fadeev-Popov ghosts fields, the model presents several massive fields, all of which can be merged in a unique vector field with support in a curved superspace. The equivalence of this model with the gauge-fixed Yang-Mills theory is shown to result from the decoupling of these extra massive modes at small momenta. Most of the symmetries of Yang-Mills theory, including the famous BRST symmetry, can be interpreted in this way as isometries of the superspace.

Gauged supersymmetries in Yang-Mills theory

In this paper we show that Yang-Mills theory in the Curci-Ferrari-Delbourgo-Jarvis gauge admits some up to now unknown local linear Ward identities. These identities imply some non-renormalization theorems with practical simplifications for perturbation theory. We show in particular that all renormalization factors can be extracted from two-point functions. The Ward identities are shown to be related to supergauge transformations in the superfield formalism for Yang-Mills theory. The case of non-zero Curci-Ferrari mass is also addressed.

Correlation functions in the Non Perturbative Renormalization Group and field expansion

The usual procedure of including a finite number of vertices in Non Perturbative Renormalization Group equations in order to obtain $n$-point correlation functions at finite momenta is analyzed. This is done by exploiting a general method recently introduced which includes simultaneously all vertices although approximating their momentum dependence. The study is performed using the self-energy of the tridimensional scalar model at criticality. At least in this example, low order truncations miss quantities as the critical exponent $η$ by as much as 60%. However, if one goes to high order truncations the procedure seems to converge rapidly.

Some non-renormalization theorems in Curci-Ferrari model

In the present letter, a particular form of Slavnov-Taylor identities for the Curci-Ferrari model is deduced. This model consist of Yang-Mills theory in a particular non-linear covariant gauge, supplemented with mass terms for gluons and ghosts. It can be used as a regularization for the Yang-Mills theory preserving simple Slavnov-Taylor identities. Employing these identities two non-renormalization theorems are proved that reduce the number of independent renormalization factors from five to three. These new relations are verified by comparing to the already known three-loops renormalization factors. These relations include, as a particular case, the corresponding known identities in Yang-Mills theory in Landau gauge.

On the 2-point function of the O(N) model

The self-energy of the critical 3-dimensional O(N) model is calculated. The analysis is performed in the context of the Non-Perturbative Renormalization Group, by exploiting an approximation which takes into account contributions of an infinite number of vertices. A very simple calculation yields the 2-point function in the whole range of momenta, from the UV Gaussian regime to the scaling one. Results are in good agreement with best estimates in the literature for any value of N in all momenta regimes. This encourages the use of this simple approximation procedure to calculate correlation functions at finite momenta in other physical situations.

Perturbation theory and non-perturbative renormalization flow in scalar field theory at finite temperature

We use the non-perturbative renormalization group to clarify some features of perturbation theory in thermal field theory. For the specific case of the scalar field theory with O(N) symmetry, we solve the flow equations within the local potential approximation. This approximation reproduces the perturbative results for the screening mass and the pressure up to order g^3, and starts to differ at order g^4. The method allows a smooth extrapolation to the regime where the coupling is not small, very similar to that obtained from a simple self-consistent approximation.

Non-Perturbative Renormalization Group calculation of the scalar self-energy

We present the first numerical application of a method that we have recently proposed to solve the Non Perturbative Renormalization Group equations and obtain the n-point functions for arbitrary external momenta. This method leads to flow equations for the n-point functions which are also differential equations with respect to a constant background field. This makes them, a priori, difficult to solve. However, we demonstrate in this paper that, within a simple approximation which turns out to be quite accurate, the solution of these flow equations is not more complicated than that of the flow equations obtained in the derivative expansion. Thus, with a numerical effort comparable to that involved in the derivative expansion, we can get the full momentum dependence of the n-point functions. The method is applied, in its leading order, to the calculation of the self-energy in a 3-dimensional scalar field theory, at criticality. Accurate results are obtained over the entire range of momenta.

Non perturbative renormalization group and momentum dependence of n-point functions (II)

In a companion paper (hep-th/0512317), we have presented an approximation scheme to solve the Non Perturbative Renormalization Group equations that allows the calculation of the $n$-point functions for arbitrary values of the external momenta. The method was applied in its leading order to the calculation of the self-energy of the O($N$) model in the critical regime. The purpose of the present paper is to extend this study to the next-to-leading order of the approximation scheme. This involves the calculation of the 4-point function at leading order, where new features arise, related to the occurrence of exceptional configurations of momenta in the flow equations. These require a special treatment, inviting us to improve the straightforward iteration scheme that we originally proposed. The final result for the self-energy at next-to-leading order exhibits a remarkable improvement as compared to the leading order calculation. This is demonstrated by the calculation of the shift $ΔT_c$, caused by weak interactions, in the temperature of Bose-Einstein condensation. This quantity depends on the self-energy at all momentum scales and can be used as a benchmark of the approximation. The improved next-to-leading order calculation of the self-energy presented in this paper leads to excellent agreement with lattice data and is within 4% of the exact large $N$ result.

A new method to solve the Non Perturbative Renormalization Group equations

We propose a method to solve the Non Perturbative Renormalization Group equations for the $n$-point functions. In leading order, it consists in solving the equations obtained by closing the infinite hierarchy of equations for the $n$-point functions. This is achieved: i) by exploiting the decoupling of modes and the analyticity of the $n$-point functions at small momenta: this allows us to neglect some momentum dependence of the vertices entering the flow equations; ii) by relating vertices at zero momenta to derivatives of lower order vertices with respect to a constant background field. Although the approximation is not controlled by a small parameter, its accuracy can be systematically improved. When it is applied to the O(N) model, its leading order is exact in the large $N$ limit; in this case, one recovers known results in a simple and direct way, i.e., without introducing an auxiliary field.

Non Perturbative Renormalization Group, momentum dependence of $n$-point functions and the transition temperature of the weakly interacting Bose gas

We propose a new approximation scheme to solve the Non Perturbative Renormalization Group equations and obtain the full momentum dependence of $n$-point functions. This scheme involves an iteration procedure built on an extension of the Local Potential Approximation commonly used within the Non Perturbative Renormalization Group. Perturbative and scaling regimes are accurately reproduced. The method is applied to the calculation of the shift $ΔT_c$ in the transition temperature of the weakly repulsive Bose gas, a quantity which is very sensitive to all momenta intermediate between these two regions. The leading order result is in agreement with lattice calculations, albeit with a theoretical uncertainty of about 25%. The next-to-leading order differs by about 10% from the best accepted result.

Non Perturbative Renormalization Group study of reaction-diffusion processes and directed percolation

We investigate non-equilibrium critical phenomena using a nonperturbative renormalization group method. Reaction-diffusion processes are described by a scale dependent effective action which evolution is governed by very generic flow equations, that are derived. They allow to recover the critical exponents of directed percolation, and moreover to calculate the microscopic reaction rates which give rise to a phase transition in the case of branching and annihilating random walks with odd number of offsprings, even in three dimensions.
