Witt invariants of quaternionic forms

We describe all Witt invariants of anti-hermitian forms over a quaternion algebra with its canonical involution, and in particular all Witt invariants of orthogonal groups $O(A,\sigma)$ where $(A,\sigma)$ is an central simple algebra with orthogonal involution and $A$ has index $2$. They are combinations of appropriately defined $\lambda$-powers, similarly to the case of quadratic forms, but the module of invariants is no longer free over those operations. The method involves extending the scalars to a generic splitting field of $A$, and controlling the residues of the invariants with respect to valuations coming from closed points in the Severi-Brauer variety.

Even Stiefel-Whitney invariants for anti-hermitian quaternionic forms

We extend all cohomological invariants of similarity classes of quadratic forms to anti-hermitian forms over a quaternion algebra. This uses the fact that such invariants can be lifted to Witt invariants, which can be described as combinations of $\lambda$-operations, and those $\lambda$-operations have recently been extended to hermitian forms over algebras with involution. In the article we present a detailed combinatoric description of invariants of quadratic forms which are partially diagonalized, and show how this combinatorics extend to anti-hermitian quaternionic forms. The methods developped here are intended to be later used for general algebras with involution.

An Artin-Schreier-type theory for signatures of hermitian forms over involutions

In the case of quadratic forms over a field, it is well-known that the prime spectrum of the Witt ring and the space of orderings of the field determine one another, through associated signature maps. We show that a sililar relation holds for hermitian forms over algebras with involution of the first kind, replacing the usual Witt ring with the mixed Witt ring of such an algebra.

Lambda-operations for hermitian forms over algebras with involution

The Grothendieck-Witt ring of a field is known to be a $\lambda$-ring, where the $\lambda$-operations are induced by the exterior powers of bilinear spaces. We give a similar construction on the mixed Grothendieck-Witt ring of a central simple algebra with involution over a field. In doing so we also develop a general framework for pre-$\lambda$-ring structures on semi-rings graded over a monoid. When the involution is of the first kind, the construction is improved, and even $\lambda$-powers of a hermitian form are quadratic forms, while odd $\lambda$-powers are hermitian forms over the same algebra. Some explicit computations of those spaces are given, as well as connexions with restrictions of trace forms. We also explain how to apply this theory to define the determinant of an involution in a larger setting than was previously done.

Invariants cohomologiques de groupes algébriques et d'algèbres à involution

In order to study certain algebraic objects, and notably algebraic groups, Serre introduced the notion on invariants, in particular cohomological invariants. The construction of non-trivial cohomological invariants of algebraic groups is an active area of modern research, and very few invariants are known in degree greater than 3. In the first chapter, we give a complete description of Witt and cohomological invariants of the functors In as combinations of fundamental invariants behaving like divided powers, whose construction relies crucially on lambda operations in the Grothendieck-Witt ring. We also study the behaviour of these invariants with respect to various operations such as products or similitudes. The second chapter is dedicated to the construction of a "mixed" Witt ring associated to an algebra with involution : the fundamental idea is to define the product of two $ε$-hermitian forms using a Morita equivalence given by the involution trace form of the algebra. We also define lambda operations on the mixed Grothendieck-Witt ring, as well as a fundamental filtration imitating the split case. A particular attention is given to explicit calculations in the case of algebras of index 2. We use those tools in the third chapter to mimic the constructions of chapter 1 in the framework of hermitian forms, and thus construct cohomological invariants of algebras with involution, with more detailed results in index 2. The main interest is to be in principle able to define non-trivial invariants of arbitrarily high degree, although the index constitues a form of obstruction.

Mixed Witt rings of algebras with involution

Although there is no natural internal product for hermitian forms over an algebra with involution of the first kind, we describe how to multiply two $\varepsilon$-hermitian forms to obtain a quadratic form over the base field. This allows to define a commutative graded ring structure by taking together bilinear forms and $\varepsilon$-hermitian forms, which we call the mixed Witt ring of an algebra with involution. We also describe a less powerful version of this construction for unitary involutions, which still defines a ring, but with a grading over $\mathbb{Z}$ instead of the Klein group. We first describe a general framework for defining graded rings out of monoidal functors from monoidal categories with strong symmetry properties to categories of modules. We then give a description of such a strongly symmetric category $\mathbf{Br}_h(K,ι)$ which encodes the usual hermitian Morita theory of algebras with involutions over a field $K$. We can therefore apply the general framework to $\mathbf{Br}_h(K,ι)$ and the Witt group functors to define our mixed Witt rings, and derive their basic properties, including explicit formulas for products of diagonal forms in terms of involution trace forms, explicit computations for the case of quaternion algebras, and reciprocity formulas relative to scalar extensions. We intend to describe in future articles further properties of those rings, such as a $λ$-ring structure, and relations with the Milnor conjecture and the theory of signatures of hermitian forms.

Witt and Cohomological Invariants of Witt Classes

We classify all invariants of the functor $I^n$ (powers of the fundamental ideal of the Witt ring) with values in $A$, that it to say functions $I^n(K)\rightarrow A(K)$ compatible with field extensions, in the cases where $A(K)=W(K)$ is the Witt ring and $A(K)=H^*(K,μ_2)$ is mod 2 Galois cohomology. This is done in terms of some invariants $f_n^d$ that behave like divided powers with respect to sums of Pfister forms, and we show that any invariant of $I^n$ can be written uniquely as a (possibly infinite) combination of those $f_n^d$. This in particular allows to lift operations defined on mod 2 Milnor K-theory (or equivalently mod 2 Galois cohomology) to the level of $I^n$. We also study various properties of these invariants, including behaviour under products, similitudes, residues for discrete valuations, and restriction from $I^n$ to $I^{n+1}$. The goal is to use this to study invariants of algebras with involutions in future articles.
