Is there a conflict between causality and diamagnetism?

There is a long-standing apparent conflict between the existence of diamagnetism and causality as expressed through the Kramers-Kronig relations. In essence, using causality arguments, along with a small number of seemingly well-justified assumptions, one can show that diamagnetism is impossible. However, experiments show diamagnetic responses from magnetic media. We present a resolution to this issue, which also explains the absence of observed dia-electric responses in media. In the process, we expose some of the short-comings in earlier analyses that have kept the paradox alive.

Quantised helicity in optical media

We present a new approach to the definition of optical helicity in a medium. Our approach resolves the problem that duality transformations which simultaneously combine $\mathbf{E}$ with $\mathbf{H}$ and $\mathbf{D}$ with $\mathbf{B}$ are incompatible with linear constitutive relations. We find that the helicity density in a medium, as the conserved quantity associated with duality transforms, must contain an explicit contribution associated with the polarisation and magnetisation of the matter, and that it can be expressed naturally in terms of the elementary polarised excitations of the system. In media for which the helicity is conserved, each circular excitation carries a well-defined helicity. However, in a medium for which the helicity is not conserved, we find that the time-varying helicity can be viewed in terms of oscillations between different helicity eigenstates, analogous to neutrino oscillations. Here we explicitly study the helicity in homogeneous and lossless media but we believe that, differently to other choices, this helicity is readily generalisable to media that may be inhomogeneous, lossy, chiral or nonreciprocal.

Atomic state interferometry for complex vector light

Features of complex vector light become important in any interference effects, including scattering, diffraction, and non-linear processes. Here we are investigating the role of polarization-structured light in atomic state interferometers. Unlike optical or atomic path interferometers, these facilitate local interference between atomic transition amplitudes and hence the orthogonal optical polarization components driving these transitions. We develop a fully analytical description for the inter action of generalized structured light with an atomic four state system, that is multiply connected via optical as well as magnetic transitions. Our model allows us to identify spatially dependent dark states, associated with spatially structured absorption coefficients, which are defined by the geometry of the polarization state and the magnetic field direction. We illustrate this for a range of optical beams including polarization vortices, optical skyrmions and polarization lattices. This results in a new interpretation and an enhanced understanding of atomic state interferometry, and a versatile mechanism to modify and control optical absorption as a function of polarization and magnetic field alignment.

Is diamagnetism really acausal?

Diamagnetism, in which the magnetisation in a medium opposes the direction of an applied magnetic field, is a weak but familiar effect in a wide class of materials. Being weak it is also a linear response to any applied field. The problem is that the existence of diamagnetism is in direct conflict with the requirements of causality as embodied in the familiar Kramers-Kronig relations. Nature does not care about our confusion and diamagnetism exists and physics is constrained by the requirements of causality (that effect cannot precede its cause). This puzzle has received intermittent attention from time to time, with a variety of arguments made to resolve the paradox. None of these, no matter how plausible, reveal the mechanism that resolves the existence of diamagnetism without sacrificing causality. The full resolution is presented in this letter.

Fluorescence Lifetime Hong-Ou-Mandel Sensing

Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Microscopy in the time domain is typically performed by recording the arrival time of photons either by using electronic time tagging or a gated detector. As such the temporal resolution is limited by the performance of the electronics to 100's of picoseconds. Here, we demonstrate a fluorescence lifetime measurement technique based on photon-bunching statistics with a resolution that is only dependent on the duration of the reference photon or laser pulse, which can readily reach the 1-0.1 picosecond timescale. A range of fluorescent dyes having lifetimes spanning from 1.6 to 7 picoseconds have been here measured with only ~1 second measurement duration. We corroborate the effectiveness of the technique by measuring the Newtonian viscosity of glycerol/water mixtures by means of a molecular rotor having over an order of magnitude variability in lifetime, thus introducing a new method for contact-free nanorheology. Accessing fluorescence lifetime information at such high temporal resolution opens a doorway for a wide range of fluorescent markers to be adopted for studying yet unexplored fast biological processes, as well as fundamental interactions such as lifetime shortening in resonant plasmonic devices.

Quantum microscopy based on Hong-Ou-Mandel interference

Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interference, the bunching of indistinguishable photons at a beam splitter, is a staple of quantum optics and lies at the heart of many quantum sensing approaches and recent optical quantum computers. Here, we report a full-field, scan-free, quantum imaging technique that exploits HOM interference to reconstruct the surface depth profile of transparent samples. We demonstrate the ability to retrieve images with micrometre-scale depth features with a photon flux as small as 7 photon pairs per frame. Using a single photon avalanche diode camera we measure both the bunched and anti-bunched photon-pair distributions at the HOM interferometer output which are combined to provide a lower-noise image of the sample. This approach demonstrates the possibility of HOM microscopy as a tool for label-free imaging of transparent samples in the very low photon regime.

Duality, decay rates and local-field models in macroscopic QED

Any treatment of magnetic interactions between atoms, molecules and optical media must start at the form of the interaction energy. This forms the base on which predictions about any number of magnetic atom-light properties stands -- spontaneous decay rates and forces included. As is well-known, the Heaviside-Larmor duality symmetry of Maxwell's equations, where electric and magnetic quantities are exchanges, is broken by the usual form of the magnetic interaction energy. We argue that this symmetry can be restored by including general local-field effects, and that local fields should be treated as a necessity for correctly translating between the microscopic world of the dipole and the macroscopic world of the measured fields. This may additionally aid in resolving a long standing debate over the form of the force on a dipole in a medium. Finally, we compute the magnetic dipole decay rate in a magneto-dielectric with local-field effects taken into account, and show that macroscopic quantum electrodynamics can be made to be dual symmetric at an operator level, instead of only for expectation values.

Measurement of Penrose superradiance in a photon superfluid

The superradiant amplification in the scattering from a rotating medium was first elucidated by Sir Roger Penrose over 50 years ago as a means by which particles could gain energy from rotating black holes. Despite this fundamental process being ubiquitous also in wave physics, it has only been observed once experimentally, in a water tank, and never in an astrophysical setting. Here, we measure this amplification for a nonlinear optics experiment in the superfluid regime. In particular, by focusing a weak optical beam carrying orbital angular momentum onto the core of a strong pump vortex beam, negative norm modes are generated and trapped inside the vortex core, allowing for amplification of a reflected beam. Our experiment demonstrates amplified reflection due to a novel form of nonlinear optical four-wave mixing, whose phase-relation coincides with the Zel'dovich-Misner condition for Penrose superradiance in our photon superfluid, and unveil the role played by negative frequency modes in the process.}

Noise limits on two-photon interferometric sensing

When a photon interferes with itself while traversing a Mach-Zehnder inteferometer, the output port where it emerges is influenced by the phase difference between the interferometer arms. This allows for highly precise estimation of the path length difference (delay) but is extremely sensitive to phase noise. By contrast, a delay between the arms of the two-photon Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer directly affects the relative indistinguishability of the photon pair, affecting the rate of recorded coincidences. This likewise allows for delay estimation; notably less precise but with the advantage of being less sensitive to perturbations of the photons' phase. Focusing on two-photon input states, we here investigate to what degree of noise Mach-Zehnder interferometry retains its edge over Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometry. We also explore the competing benefits of different two-photon inputs for a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, and under what parameter regimes each input performs best.

Avoiding gauge ambiguities in cavity QED

Systems of interacting charges and fields are ubiquitous in physics. Recently, it has been shown that Hamiltonians derived using different gauges can yield different physical results when matter degrees of freedom are truncated to a few low-lying energy eigenstates. This effect is particularly prominent in the ultra-strong coupling regime. Such ambiguities arise because transformations reshuffle the partition between light and matter degrees of freedom and so level truncation is a gauge dependent approximation. To avoid this gauge ambiguity, we redefine the electromagnetic fields in terms of potentials for which the resulting canonical momenta and Hamiltonian are explicitly unchanged by the gauge choice of this theory. Instead the light/matter partition is assigned by the intuitive choice of separating an electric field between displacement and polarisation contributions. This approach is an attractive choice in typical cavity quantum electrodynamics situations.

Synthetic Flux Attachment

Topological field theories emerge at low energy in strongly-correlated condensed matter systems and appear in the context of planar gravity. In particular, the study of Chern-Simons terms gives rise to the concept of flux attachment when the gauge field is coupled to matter, yielding flux-charge composites. Here we investigate the generation of flux attachment in a Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of non-linear synthetic gauge potentials. In doing so, we identify the U(1) Chern-Simons gauge field as a singular density-dependent gauge potential, which in turn can be expressed as a Berry connection. We envisage a proof-of-concept scheme where the artificial gauge field is perturbatively induced by an effective light-matter detuning created by interparticle interactions. At a mean field level, we recover the action of a "charged" superfluid minimally coupled to both a background and a Chern-Simons gauge field. Remarkably, a localised density perturbation in combination with a non-linear gauge potential gives rise to an effective composite boson model of fractional quantum Hall effect, displaying anyonic vortices.

Beyond coincidence: using all the data in Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometry

The Hong-Ou-Mandel effect provides a mechanism to determine the distinguishability of a photon pair by measuring the bunching rates of two photons interfering at a beam splitter. Of particular interest is the distinguishability in time, which can be used to probe a time delay. Photon detectors themselves give some timing information, however--while that resolution may dwarf that of an interferometric technique--typical analyses reduce the interference to a binary event, neglecting temporal information in the detector. By modelling detectors with number and temporal resolution we demonstrate a greater precision than coincidence rates or temporal data alone afford. Moreover, the additional information can allow simultaneous estimation of a time delay alongside calibration parameters, opening up the possibility of calibration-free protocols and approaching the precision of the quantum Cramér-Rao bound.

Spontaneous emission in anisotropic dielectrics

The emission properties of atoms lie at the foundations of both quantum theory and light-matter interactions. In the context of macroscopic media, exact knowledge thereof is important both in current quantum technologies as well as in fundamental studies. While for isotropic media, this is a very well-studied problem, there are still big gaps in the theory of anisotropic media. In particular, to the best of our knowledge, an explicit expression for the spontaneous emission rate in general anisotropic media has not been presented. In this work, we first derive the quantised electromagnetic field operators to calculate the emission rate in uniaxial media. For the more general case of biaxial media we propose an approximate expression based on interpolation between the limiting cases of uniaxial media. We support our model with numerical simulations which are in strong agreement for typical media configurations, and furthermore show how local field effects can be taken into account in the model.

Tracking the polarisation state of light via Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometry

We provide a statistically robust and accurate framework to measure and track the polarisation state of light employing Hong-Ou-Mandel interference. This is achieved by combining the concepts of maximum likelihood estimation and Fisher information applied to photon detection events. Such an approach ensures that the Cramér-Rao bound is saturated and changes to the polarisation state are established in an optimal manner. Using this method, we show that changes in the linear polarisation state can be measured with 0.6 arcminute precision (0.01 degrees).

Staggered Ground States in an Optical Lattice

Non-standard Bose-Hubbard models can exhibit rich ground state phase diagrams, even when considering the one-dimensional limit. Using a self-consistent Gutzwiller diagonalisation approach, we study the mean-field ground state properties of a long-range interacting atomic gas in a one-dimensional optical lattice. We first confirm that the inclusion of long-range two-body interactions to the standard Bose-Hubbard model introduces density wave and supersolid phases. However, the introduction of pair and density-dependent tunnelling can result in new phases with two-site periodic density, single-particle transport and two-body transport order parameters. These staggered phases are potentially a mean-field signature of the known novel twisted superfluids found via a DMRG approach [PRA \textbf{94}, 011603(R) (2016)]. We also observe other unconventional phases, which are characterised by sign staggered order parameters between adjacent lattice sites.

Vacuum radiation and frequency-mixing in linear light-matter systems

Recent progress in photonics has led to a renewed interest in time-varying media that change on timescales comparable to the optical wave oscillation time. However, these studies typically overlook the role of material dispersion that will necessarily imply a delayed temporal response or, stated alternatively, a memory effect. We investigate the influence of the medium memory on a specific effect, i.e. the excitation of quantum vacuum radiation due to the temporal modulation. We construct a framework which reduces the problem to single-particle quantum mechanics, which we then use to study the quantum vacuum radiation. We find that the delayed temporal response changes the vacuum emission properties drastically: Frequencies mix, something typically associated with nonlinear processes, despite the system being completely linear. Indeed, this effect is related to the parametric resonances of the light-matter system, and to the parametric driving of the system by frequencies present locally in the drive but not in its spectrum.

Linked and knotted synthetic magnetic fields

We show that the realisation of synthetic magnetic fields via light-matter coupling in the Lambda-scheme implements a natural geometrical construction of magnetic fields, namely as the pullback of the area element of the sphere to Euclidean space via certain maps. For suitable maps, this construction generates linked and knotted magnetic fields, and the synthetic realisation amounts to the identification of the map with the ratio of two Rabi frequencies which represent the coupling of the internal energy levels of an ultracold atom. We consider examples of maps which can be physically realised in terms of Rabi frequencies and which lead to linked and knotted synthetic magnetic fields acting on the neutral atomic gas. We also show that the ground state of the Bose-Einstein condensate may inherit topological properties of the synthetic gauge field, with linked and knotted vortex lines appearing in some cases.

Optical Analogue of the Dynamical Casimir Effect in a Dispersion-Oscillating Fibre

The dynamical Casimir effect is the generation of pairs of real particles or photons from the vacuum as a result of a non-adiabatic change of a system parameter or boundary condition. As opposed to standard parametric amplification where the modulation occurs both in space and in time, this fundamental process requires a pure modulation in time, which makes its detection particularly challenging at optical frequencies. In this paper we experimentally demonstrate a realisation of the optical analogue of the mechanical dynamical Casimir effect in the near-infrared optical regime in a dispersion-oscillating photonic crystal fibre. The experiments are based on the equivalence of the spatial modulation of the fibre core diameter to a pure temporal modulation when this is considered in the co-moving frame of the travelling pump pulse. We provide evidence of optical dynamical Casimir effect by measuring quantum correlations between the spectrally resolved photon pairs. The non-classical nature of the measured light is supported by evidence of anti-bunching photon statistics.
