Impacts of Fermi Level Pinning at Hole-Selective Contacts in CdSeTe/CdTe Solar Cells

P-type doped CdTe free surfaces Schottky contacts, and even interfaces with isostructural p-ZnTe frequently exhibit downward band bending and moderate to high recombination velocities. Fermi level pinning by donor-like states can explain these band diagram features, as well as device response characteristics such as 1st quadrant rollover in current-voltage (JV) versus temperature (JVT). Parasitic downward band bending also produces voltage-dependent photocurrent collection, producing fill factor (FF) efficiency losses, JV dark/light non-superposition (or JV take-off), and irregularities in Jsc-Voc and Suns-Voc measurements. Herein, we develop a device physics model of state-of-the-art CdSeTe/CdTe solar cells consistent with known characterization of materials and devices, including the optical, thermalization, and trapping effects of band tail states and isolated defects. We use this model to demonstrate that Fermi-level pinning at the p-ZnTe/p-CdSeTe hole contact by donor-like defects reproduces the aforementioned observables, and conclude that (for contemporary few-um absorber thicknesses and low mobilities) it primarily affects FF rather than Voc. We investigate the performance gains possible from hypothetical passivated, hole-selective layers at the ZnTe/CdTe interface, which eliminate the downwards band bending caused by donor-like defects. For thinner devices and larger minority carrier diffusion lengths, these strategies will become more important for continued efficiency improvements.

Minimal complexity cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds with geodesic boundary

In the early 2000s, Frigerio, Martelli, and Petronio studied $3$-manifolds of smallest combinatorial complexity that admit hyperbolic structures. As part of this work they defined and studied the class $M_{g,k}$ of smallest complexity manifolds having $k$ torus cusps and connected totally geodesic boundary a surface of genus $g$. In this paper, we provide a complete classification of the manifolds in $M_{k,k}$ and $M_{k+1,k}$, which are the cases when the genus $g$ is as small as possible. In addition to classifying manifolds in $M_{k,k}$, $M_{k+1,k}$, we describe their isometry groups as well as a relationship between these two sets via Dehn filling on small slopes. Finally, we give a description of important commensurability invariants of the manifolds in $M_{k,k}$.

Semiclassical Measures on Hyperbolic Manifolds

We examine semiclassical measures for Laplace eigenfunctions on compact hyperbolic $(n+1)$-manifolds. We prove their support must contain the cosphere bundle of a compact immersed totally geodesic submanifold. Our proof adapts the argument of Dyatlov and Jin to higher dimensions and classifies the closures of horocyclic orbits using Ratner theory. An important step in the proof is a generalization of the higher-dimensional fractal uncertainty principle of Cohen to Fourier integral operators, which may be of independent interest.

Demonstration that Differential Length Changes of Optical Cavities are a Sensitive Probe for Ultralight Dark Matter

Measurements of differential length oscillations of Fabry-Perot cavities provide a sensitive and promising approach to searching for scalar ultralight dark matter (ULDM). The initial demonstration sets direct lower bounds that are one to two orders of magnitude lower for two model ULDM distributions -- a standard galactic halo and a relaxion star bound to Earth -- ranging over a decade of ULDM mass and Compton frequency. The demonstration suggests how a much higher sensitivity to a much larger ULDM mass range can be obtained.

Semiclassical measures for complex hyperbolic quotients

We study semiclassical measures for Laplacian eigenfunctions on compact complex hyperbolic quotients. Geodesic flows on these quotients are a model case of hyperbolic dynamical systems with different expansion/contraction rates in different directions. We show that the support of any semiclassical measure is either equal to the entire cosphere bundle or contains the cosphere bundle of a compact immersed totally geodesic complex submanifold. The proof uses the one-dimensional fractal uncertainty principle of Bourgain-Dyatlov [arXiv:1612.09040] along the fast expanding/contracting directions, in a way similar to the work of Dyatlov-J\'ez\'equel [arXiv:2108.10463] in the toy model of quantum cat maps, together with a description of the closures of fast unstable/stable trajectories relying on Ratner theory.

Rich representations and superrigidity

We investigate and compare applications of the Zilber-Pink conjecture and dynamical methods to rigidity problems for arithmetic real and complex hyperbolic lattices. Along the way we obtain new general results about reconstructing a variation of Hodge structure from its typical Hodge locus that may be of independent interest. Applications to Siu's immersion problem are also discussed, the most general of which only requires the hypothesis that infinitely many closed geodesics map to proper totally geodesic subvarieties under the immersion.

A note on an effective characterization of covers with an application to higher rank representations

In this note we prove an effective characterization of when two finite-degree covers of a connected, orientable surface of negative Euler characteristic are isomorphic in terms of which curves have simple elevations, weakening the hypotheses to consider curves with explicitly bounded self-intersection number. As an application we show that for sufficiently large N, the set of unmarked traces associated to simple closed curves in a generically chosen representation to SL(N, R) distinguishes between pairs of non-isomorphic covers.

Azumaya algebras and once-punctured torus bundles

Recent work of Chinburg, Reid, and Stover has shown that certain arithmetic and algebro-geometric properties of the character variety of a hyperbolic knot complement in the 3-sphere $M=S^3\setminus K$ yields topological and number theoretic information about Dehn fillings of M. Specifically, they show how the study of a certain extension problem for quaternion Azumaya algebras is related to topological invariants associated to these fillings. In this paper, we extend their work to the setting of hyperbolic once punctured torus bundles. Along the way, we exhibit new phenomenon in the relevant extension problem not visible in the case of a hyperbolic knot complement, which is related to the more complicated non-abelian reducible representation theory of hyperbolic once punctured torus bundles. We then apply these results to a series of examples from the literature and list some remaining questions from both works.

Shifts maps are not type-preserving

For a surface $S$ of sufficient complexity, Dehn twists act elliptically on the arc, curve, and relative arc graph of $S$. We show that composing a Dehn twist with a shift map results in a loxodromic isometry of the relative arc graph $\mathcal{A}(S,p)$ for any surface $S$ with an isolated puncture $p$ admitting a shift map. Therefore, shift maps are not type-preserving.

Unmarked simple length spectral rigidity for covers

We prove that every closed orientable surface S of negative Euler characteristic admits a pair of finite-degree covers which are length isospectral over S but generically not simple length isospectral over S. To do this, we first characterize when two finite-degree covers of a connected, orientable surface of negative Euler characteristic are isomorphic in terms of which curves have simple elevations. We also construct hyperbolic surfaces X and Y with the same full unmarked length spectrum but so that for each k, the sets of lengths associated to curves with at most k self-intersections differ.

Infinite-type loxodromic isometries of the relative arc graph

An infinite-type surface $\Sigma$ is of type $\mathcal{S}$ if it has an isolated puncture $p$ and admits shift maps. This includes all infinite-type surfaces with an isolated puncture outside of two sporadic classes. Given such a surface, we construct an infinite family of intrinsically infinite-type mapping classes that act loxodromically on the relative arc graph $\mathcal{A}(\Sigma, p)$. J. Bavard produced such an element for the plane minus a Cantor set, and our result gives the first examples of such mapping classes for all other surfaces of type $\mathcal{S}$. The elements we construct are the composition of three shift maps on $\Sigma$, and we give an alternate characterization of these elements as a composition of a pseudo-Anosov on a finite-type subsurface of $\Sigma$ and a standard shift map. We then explicitly find their limit points on the boundary of $\mathcal{A}(\Sigma,p)$ and their limiting geodesic laminations. Finally, we show that these infinite-type elements can be used to prove that Map$(\Sigma,p)$ has an infinite-dimensional space of quasimorphisms.

Arithmeticity, superrigidity and totally geodesic submanifolds of complex hyperbolic manifolds

For $n \ge 2$, we prove that a finite volume complex hyperbolic $n$-manifold containing infinitely many maximal properly immersed totally geodesic submanifolds of dimension at least two is arithmetic, paralleling our previous work for real hyperbolic manifolds. As in the real hyperbolic case, our primary result is a superrigidity theorem for certain representations of complex hyperbolic lattices. The proof requires developing new general tools not needed in the real hyperbolic case. Our main results also have a number of other applications. For example, we prove nonexistence of certain maps between complex hyperbolic manifolds, which is related to a question of Siu, that certain hyperbolic $3$-manifolds cannot be totally geodesic submanifolds of complex hyperbolic manifolds, and that arithmeticity of complex hyperbolic manifolds is detected purely by the topology of the underlying complex variety, which is related to a question of Margulis. Our results also provide some evidence for a conjecture of Klingler that is a broad generalization of the Zilber--Pink conjecture.

Assessing the Efficacy of Clinical Sentiment Analysis and Topic Extraction in Psychiatric Readmission Risk Prediction

Predicting which patients are more likely to be readmitted to a hospital within 30 days after discharge is a valuable piece of information in clinical decision-making. Building a successful readmission risk classifier based on the content of Electronic Health Records (EHRs) has proved, however, to be a challenging task. Previously explored features include mainly structured information, such as sociodemographic data, comorbidity codes and physiological variables. In this paper we assess incorporating additional clinically interpretable NLP-based features such as topic extraction and clinical sentiment analysis to predict early readmission risk in psychiatry patients.

On the genus of congruence surfaces from maximal orders

In this paper, we investigate a question of Breuillard and Reid concerning which genera can be obtained by closed congruence surfaces. Specifically, we study a smaller set of objects, namely the closed congruence surfaces which can be constructed by a maximal order in a quaternion algebra, and show that there is no surface of genus 212 in this class. In particular, we show that Breuillard and Reid's question restricted to such surfaces has a negative answer.

Analysis of Risk Factor Domains in Psychosis Patient Health Records

Readmission after discharge from a hospital is disruptive and costly, regardless of the reason. However, it can be particularly problematic for psychiatric patients, so predicting which patients may be readmitted is critically important but also very difficult. Clinical narratives in psychiatric electronic health records (EHRs) span a wide range of topics and vocabulary; therefore, a psychiatric readmission prediction model must begin with a robust and interpretable topic extraction component. We created a data pipeline for using document vector similarity metrics to perform topic extraction on psychiatric EHR data in service of our long-term goal of creating a readmission risk classifier. We show initial results for our topic extraction model and identify additional features we will be incorporating in the future.

Effective virtual and residual properties of some arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifolds

We give an effective upper bound, for certain arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifold groups obtained from a quadratic form construction, on the minimal index of a subgroup that embeds in a fixed 6-dimensional right-angled reflection group, stabilizing a totally geodesic subspace. In particular, for manifold groups in any fixed commensurability class we show that the index of such a subgroup is asymptotically smaller than any fractional power of the volume of the manifold. We also give effective bounds on the geodesic residual finiteness growths of closed hyperbolic manifolds that totally geodesically immerse in non-compact right-angled reflection orbifolds, extending work of the third author from the compact case. The first result gives examples to which the second applies, and for these we give explicit bounds on geodesic residual finiteness growth.

Finiteness of Maximal Geodesic Submanifolds in Hyperbolic Hybrids

We show that large classes of non-arithmetic hyperbolic $n$-manifolds, including the hybrids introduced by Gromov and Piatetski-Shapiro and many of their generalizations, have only finitely many finite-volume immersed totally geodesic hypersurfaces. In higher codimension, we prove finiteness for geodesic submanifolds of dimension at least $2$ that are maximal, i.e., not properly contained in a proper geodesic submanifold of the ambient $n$-manifold. The proof is a mix of structure theory for arithmetic groups, dynamics, and geometry in negative curvature.
