Submodular Maximization over Many Matroids via Ordered Local Search

Given a monotone submodular function, we consider the problem of finding a maximum-valued set in the intersection of $k$ matroids. Our main result is a polynomial time local search based algorithm achieving a $\frac{k}{2} + o(k)$ approximation guarantee. This asymptotically matches the best-known guarantee of $\frac{k}{2} + \epsilon$ in the unweighted setting by Lee, Sviridenko, and Vondr\'ak (2009). Prior to this work, the state-of-the-art was a $\frac{\ln(4)k}{1+\ln(2)} + o(k)$-approximation algorithm obtained by Feldman and Ward (2026). Our approach extends to Matroid $k$-Parity yielding the same approximation guarantee. In contrast to the weight bucketing approach underlying the recent advances of Singer and Thiery (2025) and Feldman and Ward (2026), our algorithm processes elements greedily in decreasing order of marginal value and searches for sufficiently profitable swaps, whose gain exceeds a parameter $\alpha$ given as a function of $k$. We further combine this idea with the weight bucketing approach to obtain improved guarantees for weighted $k$-Set Packing. Our second main result is a $\frac{\ln(4)k}{3} + o(k)$-approximation algorithm for weighted $k$-Set Packing, improving on the state of the art $\frac{k}{2.00561} + O(1)$-approximation by Neuwohner (2023).

Excluding a Line Minor via Design Matrices and Column Number Bounds for the Circuit Imbalance Measure

For a real matrix $A \in \mathbb{R}^{d \times n}$ with non-collinear columns, we show that $n \leq O(d^4 \kappa_A)$ where $\kappa_A$ is the \emph{circuit imbalance measure} of $A$. The circuit imbalance measure $\kappa$ is a real analogue of $\Delta$-modularity for integer matrices, satisfying $\kappa_A \leq \Delta_A$ for integer $A$. The circuit imbalance measure has numerous applications in the context of linear programming (see Ekbatani, Natura and V{\'e}gh (2022) for a survey). Our result generalizes the $O(d^4 \Delta_A)$ bound of Averkov and Schymura (2023) for integer matrices and provides the first polynomial bound holding for all parameter ranges on real matrices. To derive our result, similar to the strategy of Geelen, Nelson and Walsh (2021) for $\Delta$-modular matrices, we show that real representable matroids induced by $\kappa$-bounded matrices are minor closed and exclude a rank $2$ uniform matroid on $O(\kappa)$ elements as a minor (also known as a line of length $O(\kappa)$). As our main technical contribution, we show that any simple rank $d$ complex representable matroid which excludes a line of length $l$ has at most $O(d^4 l)$ elements. This complements the tight bound of $(l-3)\binom{d}{2} + d$ for $l \geq 4$, of Geelen, Nelson and Walsh which holds when the rank $d$ is sufficiently large compared to $l$ (at least doubly exponential in $l$).

Second Price Matching with Complete Allocation and Degree Constraints

We study the Second Price Matching problem, introduced by Azar, Birnbaum, Karlin, and Nguyen in 2009. In this problem, a bipartite graph (bidders and goods) is given, and the profit of a matching is the number of matches containing a second unmatched bidder. Maximizing profit is known to be APX-hard and the current best approximation guarantee is $1/2$. APX-hardness even holds when all degrees are bounded by a constant. In this paper, we investigate the approximability of the problem under regular degree constraints. Our main result is an improved approximation guarantee of $9/10$ for Second Price Matching in $(3,2)$-regular graphs and an exact polynomial-time algorithm for $(d,2)$-regular graphs if $d\geq 4$. Our algorithm and its analysis are based on structural results in non-bipartite matching, in particular the Tutte-Berge formula coupled with novel combinatorial augmentation methods. We also introduce a variant of Second Price Matching where all goods have to be matched, which models the setting of expiring goods. We prove that this problem is hard to approximate within a factor better than $(1-1/e)$ and show that the problem can be approximated to a tight $(1-1/e)$ factor by maximizing a submodular function subject to a matroid constraint. We then show that our algorithm also solves this problem exactly on regular degree constrained graphs as above.

Better Approximation for Weighted $k$-Matroid Intersection

We consider the problem of finding an independent set of maximum weight simultaneously contained in $k$ matroids over a common ground set. This $k$-matroid intersection problem appears naturally in many contexts, for example in generalizing graph and hypergraph matching problems. In this paper, we provide a $(k+1)/(2 \ln 2)$-approximation algorithm for the weighted $k$-matroid intersection problem. This is the first improvement over the longstanding $(k-1)$-guarantee of Lee, Sviridenko and Vondr\'ak (2009). Along the way, we also give the first improvement over greedy for the more general weighted matroid $k$-parity problem. Our key innovation lies in a randomized reduction in which we solve almost unweighted instances iteratively. This perspective allows us to use insights from the unweighted problem for which Lee, Sviridenko, and Vondr\'ak have designed a $k/2$-approximation algorithm. We analyze this procedure by constructing refined matroid exchanges and leveraging randomness to avoid bad local minima.

An improved bound on sums of square roots via the subspace theorem

The sum of square roots is as follows: Given $x_1,\dots,x_n \in \mathbb{Z}$ and $a_1,\dots,a_n \in \mathbb{N}$ decide whether $ E=\sum_{i=1}^n x_i \sqrt{a_i} \geq 0$. It is a prominent open problem (Problem 33 of the Open Problems Project), whether this can be decided in polynomial time. The state-of-the-art methods rely on separation bounds, which are lower bounds on the minimum nonzero absolute value of $E$. The current best bound shows that $|E| \geq \left(n \cdot \max_i (|x_i| \cdot \sqrt{a_i})\right)^{-2^n} $, which is doubly exponentially small. We provide a new bound of the form $|E| \geq \gamma \cdot (n \cdot \max_i|x_i|)^{-2n}$ where $\gamma $ is a constant depending on $a_1,\dots,a_n$. This is singly exponential in $n$ for fixed $a_1,\dots,a_n$. The constant $\gamma$ is not explicit and stems from the subspace theorem, a deep result in the geometry of numbers.

Polarization in Attraction-Repulsion Models

This paper introduces a model for opinion dynamics, where at each time step, randomly selected agents see their opinions - modeled as scalars in [0,1] - evolve depending on a local interaction function. In the classical Bounded Confidence Model, agents opinions get attracted when they are close enough. The proposed model extends this by adding a repulsion component, which models the effect of opinions getting further pushed away when dissimilar enough. With this repulsion component added, and under a repulsion-attraction cleavage assumption, it is shown that a new stable configuration emerges beyond the classical consensus configuration, namely the polarization configuration. More specifically, it is shown that total consensus and total polarization are the only two possible limiting configurations. The paper further provides an analysis of the infinite population regime in dimension 1 and higher, with a phase transition phenomenon conjectured and backed heuristically.
