Data-driven Supervisory Control under Attacks via Spectral Learning

The technological advancements facilitating the rapid development of cyber-physical systems (CPS) also render such systems vulnerable to cyber attacks with devastating effects. Supervisory control is a commonly used control method to neutralize attacks on CPS. The supervisor strives to confine the (symbolic) paths of the system to a desired language via sensors and actuators in a closed control loop, even when attackers can manipulate the symbols received by the sensors and actuators. Currently, supervisory control methods face limitations when effectively identifying and mitigating unknown, broad-spectrum attackers. In order to capture the behavior of broad-spectrum attacks on both sensing and actuation channels we model the plant, supervisors, and attackers with finite-state transducers (FSTs). Our general method for addressing unknown attackers involves constructing FST models of the attackers from spectral analysis of their input and output symbol sequences recorded from a history of attack behaviors observed in a supervisory control loop. To construct these FST models, we devise a novel learning method based on the recorded history of attack behaviors. A supervisor is synthesized using such models to neutralize the attacks.

Investigating Ocean Circulation Dynamics Through Data Assimilation: A Mathematical Study Using the Stommel Box Model with Rapid Oscillatory Forcings

We investigate ocean circulation changes through the lens of data assimilation using a reduced-order model. Our primary interest lies in the Stommel box model which reveals itself to be one of the most practicable models that has the ability of reproducing the meridional overturning circulation. The Stommel box model has at most two regimes: TH (temperature driven circulation with sinking near the north pole) and SA (salinity driven with sinking near the equator). Currently, the meridional overturning is in the TH regime. Using box-averaged Met Office EN4 ocean temperature and salinity data, our goal is to provide a probability that a future regime change occurs and establish how this probability depends on the uncertainties in initial conditions, parameters and forcings. We will achieve this using data assimilation tools and DAPPER within the Stommel box model with fast oscillatory regimes.

Splitting Quantum Graphs

We derive a counting formula for the eigenvalues of Schr\"odinger operators with self-adjoint boundary conditions on quantum star graphs. More specifically, we develop techniques using Evans functions to reduce full quantum graph eigenvalue problems into smaller subgraph eigenvalue problems. These methods provide a simple way to calculate the spectra of operators with localized potentials.
