Suitable resolution for EOS tables in neutron star investigation

Inasmuch as the hydrostatic structure of interior neutron stars uniquely depends on the equation of state (EOS), the inverse constraints on EOS from astrophysical observation have been important methods to reveal the properties of the high-density matter. Up to date, most of EOSs for neutron-star matter are given in tabulations, but these numeric tables could be quite different in resolution. To guarantee both the accuracy and efficiency in computing Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equation, a concise standard for generating EOS tables with suitable resolution is investigated in this work. It is shown that the EOS tables with 50 points logarithmic-uniformly located at supra-nuclear density segment [$ρ_{0}, 10 ρ_{0} $], where $ρ_{0}$ is the nuclear saturation density) would correspond to the interpolation-induced errors at $\sim 0.02\%$ for the gravitational mass $M$ and $\sim 0.2\%$ for the tidal deformability $Λ$.

Raman Signatures of Broken Inversion Symmetry and In-plane Anisotropy in Type-II Weyl Semimetal Candidate TaIrTe4

The layered ternary compound TaIrTe4 is an important candidate to host the recently predicted type-II Weyl Fermions. However, a direct and definitive proof of the absence of inversion symmetry in this material, a prerequisite for the existence of Weyl Fermions, has so far remained evasive. Herein, an unambiguous identification of the broken inversion symmetry in TaIrTe4 is established using angle-resolved polarized Raman spectroscopy. Combining with high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, we demonstrate an efficient and nondestructive recipe to determine the exact crystallographic orientation of TaIrTe4 crystals. Such technique could be extended to the fast identification and characterization of other type-II Weyl Fermions candidates. A surprisingly strong in-plane electrical anisotropy in TaIrTe4 thin flakes is also revealed, up to 200% at 10K, which is the strongest known electrical anisotropy for materials with comparable carrier density, notably in such good metals as copper and silver.

Martingale approximations for random fields

In this paper we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the mean square approximation of a random field with an ortho-martingale. The conditions are formulated in terms of projective criteria. Applications are given to linear and nonlinear random fields with independent innovations.

Central limit theorem for Fourier transform and periodogram of random fields

In this paper we show that the limiting distribution of the real and the imaginary part of the double Fourier transform of a stationary random field is almost surely an independent vector with Gaussian marginal distributions, whose variance is, up to a constant, the field's spectral density. The dependence structure of the random field is general and we do not impose any restrictions on the speed of convergence to zero of the covariances, or smoothness of the spectral density. The only condition required is that the variables are adapted to a commuting filtration and are regular in some sense. The results go beyond the Bernoulli fields and apply to both short range and long range dependence. They can be easily applied to derive the asymptotic behavior of the periodogram associated to the random field. The method of proof is based on new probabilistic methods involving martingale approximations and also on borrowed and new tools from harmonic analysis.

On the normal approximation for random fields via martingale methods

We prove a central limit theorem for strictly stationary random fields under a sharp projective condition. The assumption was introduced in the setting of random variables by Maxwell and Woodroofe. Our approach is based on new results for triangular arrays of martingale differences, which have interest in themselves. We provide as applications new results for linear random fields and nonlinear random fields of Volterra-type.

Capped Lp approximations for the composite L0 regularization problem

The composite L0 function serves as a sparse regularizer in many applications. The algorithmic difficulty caused by the composite L0 regularization (the L0 norm composed with a linear mapping) is usually bypassed through approximating the L0 norm. We consider in this paper capped Lp approximations with $p>0$ for the composite L0 regularization problem. For each $p>0$, the capped Lp function converges to the L0 norm pointwisely as the approximation parameter tends to infinity. We point out that the capped Lp approximation problem is essentially a penalty method with an Lp penalty function for the composite L0 problem from the viewpoint of numerical optimization. Our theoretical results stated below may shed a new light on the penalty methods for solving the composite L0 problem and help the design of innovative numerical algorithms. We first establish the existence of optimal solutions to the composite L0 regularization problem and its capped Lp approximation problem under conditions that the data fitting function is asymptotically level stable and bounded below. Asymptotically level stable functions cover a rich class of data fitting functions encountered in practice. We then prove that the capped Lp problem asymptotically approximates the composite L0 problem if the data fitting function is a level bounded function composed with a linear mapping. We further show that if the data fitting function is the indicator function on an asymptotically linear set or the L0 norm composed with an affine mapping, then the composite L0 problem and its capped Lp approximation problem share the same optimal solution set provided that the approximation parameter is large enough.

Model of ultrafast demagnetization driven by spin-orbit coupling in a photoexcited antiferromagnetic insulator Cr2O3

We theoretically study the dynamic time evolution following laser pulse pumping in an antiferromagnetic insulator Cr$_{2}$O$_{3}$. From the photoexcited high-spin quartet states to the long-lived low-spin doublet states, the ultrafast demagnetization processes are investigated by solving the dissipative Schrödinger equation. We find that the demagnetization times are of the order of hundreds of femtosecond, in good agreement with recent experiments. The switching times could be strongly reduced by properly tuning the energy gaps between the multiplet energy levels of Cr$^{3+}$. Furthermore, the relaxation times also depend on the hybridization of atomic orbitals in the first photoexcited state. Our results suggest that the selective manipulation of electronic structure by engineering stress-strain or chemical substitution allows effective control of the magnetic state switching in photoexcited insulating transition-metal oxides.

On optimal solutions of the constrained $\ell_0$ regularization and its penalty problem

The constrained $\ell_0$ regularization plays an important role in sparse reconstruction. A widely used approach for solving this problem is the penalty method, of which the least square penalty problem is a special case. However, the connections between global minimizers of the constrained $\ell_0$ problem and its penalty problem have never been studied in a systematic way. This work provides a comprehensive investigation on optimal solutions of these two problems and their connections. We give detailed descriptions of optimal solutions of the two problems, including existence, stability with respect to the parameter, cardinality and strictness. In particular, we find that the optimal solution set of the penalty problem is piecewise constant with respect to the penalty parameter. Then we analyze in-depth the relationship between optimal solutions of the two problems. It is shown that, in the noisy case the least square penalty problem probably has no common optimal solutions with the constrained $\ell_0$ problem for any penalty parameter. Under a mild condition on the penalty function, we establish that the penalty problem has the same optimal solution set as the constrained $\ell_0$ problem when the penalty parameter is sufficiently large. Based on the conditions, we further propose exact penalty problems for the constrained $\ell_0$ problem. Finally, we present a numerical example to illustrate our main theoretical results.

Two-step Fixed-point proximity algorithms for multi-block separable convex problems

Multi-block separable convex problems recently received considerable attention. This class of optimization problems minimizes a separable convex objective function with linear constraints. The algorithmic challenges come from the fact that the classic alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) for the problem is not necessarily convergent. However, it is observed that ADMM outperforms numerically many of its variants with guaranteed theoretical convergence. The goal of this paper is to develop convergent and computationally efficient algorithms for solving multi-block separable convex problems. We first characterize the solutions of the optimization problems by proximity operators of the convex functions involved in their objective function. We then design a two-step fixed-point iterative scheme for solving these problems based on the characterization. We further prove convergence of the iterative scheme and show that it has O(1/k) convergence rate in the ergodic sense and the sense of the partial primal-dual gap, where k denotes the iteration number. Moreover, we derive specific two-step fixed-point proximity algorithms (2SFPPA) from the proposed iterative scheme and establish their global convergence. Numerical experiments for solving the sparse MRI problem demonstrate the numerical efficiency of the proposed 2SFPPA.

Optimal stopping problems with regime switching: a viscosity solution method

We employ the viscosity solution technique to analyze optimal stopping problems with regime switching. Specifically, we obtain the viscosity property of value functions, the uniqueness of viscosity solutions, the regularity of value functions and the form of optimal stopping intervals. Finally, we provide an application of the results.

Hierarchical multiscale modeling for flows in fractured media using Generalized Multiscale Finite Element Method

In this paper, we develop a multiscale finite element method for solving flows in fractured media. Our approach is based on Generalized Multiscale Finite Element Method (GMsFEM), where we represent the fracture effects on a coarse grid via multiscale basis functions. These multiscale basis functions are constructed in the offline stage via local spectral problems following GMsFEM. To represent the fractures on the fine grid, we consider two approaches (1) Discrete Fracture Model (DFM) (2) Embedded Fracture Model (EFM) and their combination. In DFM, the fractures are resolved via the fine grid, while in EFM the fracture and the fine grid block interaction is represented as a source term. In the proposed multiscale method, additional multiscale basis functions are used to represent the long fractures, while short-size fractures are collectively represented by a single basis functions. The procedure is automatically done via local spectral problems. In this regard, our approach shares common concepts with several approaches proposed in the literature as we discuss. Numerical results are presented where we demonstrate how one can adaptively add basis functions in the regions of interest based on error indicators. We also discuss the use of randomized snapshots (\cite{randomized2014}) which reduces the offline computational cost.

Exploring multipartite quantum correlations with the square of quantum discord

We explore the quantum correlation distribution in multipartite quantum states based on the square of quantum discord (SQD). For tripartite quantum systems, we derive the necessary and sufficient condition for the SQD to satisfy the monogamy relation. Particularly, we prove that the SQD is monogamous for three-qubit pure states, based on which a genuine tripartite quantum correlation measure is introduced. In addition, we also address the quantum correlation distributions in four-qubit pure states. As an example, we investigate multipartite quantum correlations in the dynamical evolution of multipartite cavity-reservoir systems.

A study of gravity-linked metapopulation models for the spatial spread of dengue fever

Metapopulation (multipatch) models are widely used to study the patterns of spatial spread of epidemics. In this paper we study the impact of inter-patch connection weights on the predictions of these models. We contrast arbitrary, uniform link weights with link weights predicted using a gravity model based on patch populations and distance. In a synthetic system with one large driver city and many small follower cities, we show that under uniform link weights, epidemics in the follower regions are perfectly synchronized. In contrast, gravity-based links allow a more realistic, less synchronized distribution of epidemic peaks in the follower regions. We then fit a three-patch metapopulation model to regional dengue fever data from Peru -- a country experiencing yearly, spatially defined epidemics. We use data for 2002-2008 (studying the seasonal disease patterns in the country and the yearly reinfection patterns from jungle to the coast) and 2000-2001 (one large epidemic of a new disease strain across the country). We present numerical results.

Invariant representation for stochastic differential operator by BSDEs with uniformly continuous coefficients and its applications

In this paper, we prove that a kind of second order stochastic differential operator can be represented by the limit of solutions of BSDEs with uniformly continuous coefficients. This result is a generalization of the representation for the uniformly continuous generator. With the help of this representation, we obtain the corresponding converse comparison theorem for the BSDEs with uniformly continuous coefficients, and get some equivalent relationships between the properties of the generator $g$ and the associated solutions of BSDEs. Moreover, we give a new proof about $g$-convexity.
