Underwater target 6D State Estimation via UUV Attitude Enhance Observability

Accurate relative state observation of Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs) for tracking uncooperative targets remains a significant challenge due to the absence of GPS, complex underwater dynamics, and sensor limitations. Existing localization approaches rely on either global positioning infrastructure or multi-UUV collaboration, both of which are impractical for a single UUV operating in large or unknown environments. To address this, we propose a novel persistent relative 6D state estimation framework that enables a single UUV to estimate its relative motion to a non-cooperative target using only successive noisy range measurements from two monostatic sonar sensors. Our key contribution is an observability-enhanced attitude control strategy, which optimally adjusts the UUV's orientation to improve the observability of relative state estimation using a Kalman filter, effectively mitigating the impact of sensor noise and drift accumulation. Additionally, we introduce a rigorously proven Lyapunov-based tracking control strategy that guarantees long-term stability by ensuring that the UUV maintains an optimal measurement range, preventing localization errors from diverging over time. Through theoretical analysis and simulations, we demonstrate that our method significantly improves 6D relative state estimation accuracy and robustness compared to conventional approaches. This work provides a scalable, infrastructure-free solution for UUVs tracking uncooperative targets underwater.

Consistency-aware Fake Videos Detection on Short Video Platforms

This paper focuses to detect the fake news on the short video platforms. While significant research efforts have been devoted to this task with notable progress in recent years, current detection accuracy remains suboptimal due to the rapid evolution of content manipulation and generation technologies. Existing approaches typically employ a cross-modal fusion strategy that directly combines raw video data with metadata inputs before applying a classification layer. However, our empirical observations reveal a critical oversight: manipulated content frequently exhibits inter-modal inconsistencies that could serve as valuable discriminative features, yet remain underutilized in contemporary detection frameworks. Motivated by this insight, we propose a novel detection paradigm that explicitly identifies and leverages cross-modal contradictions as discriminative cues. Our approach consists of two core modules: Cross-modal Consistency Learning (CMCL) and Multi-modal Collaborative Diagnosis (MMCD). CMCL includes Pseudo-label Generation (PLG) and Cross-modal Consistency Diagnosis (CMCD). In PLG, a Multimodal Large Language Model is used to generate pseudo-labels for evaluating cross-modal semantic consistency. Then, CMCD extracts [CLS] tokens and computes cosine loss to quantify cross-modal inconsistencies. MMCD further integrates multimodal features through Multimodal Feature Fusion (MFF) and Probability Scores Fusion (PSF). MFF employs a co-attention mechanism to enhance semantic interactions across different modalities, while a Transformer is utilized for comprehensive feature fusion. Meanwhile, PSF further integrates the fake news probability scores obtained in the previous step. Extensive experiments on established benchmarks (FakeSV and FakeTT) demonstrate our model exhibits outstanding performance in Fake videos detection.

Enhancement of Second Harmonic Generation in Monolayer WS2 by Feedback-Based Wavefront Shaping

Two-dimensional Transition-Metal Dichalcogenides (TMDs) are of great interest for second harmonic (SH) generation due to their large second-order susceptibility, atomically thin structure, and relaxed phase-matching conditions. TMDs are also promising candidates for miniaturizing nonlinear optical devices due to their versatile applications in photon manipulation, quantum emission and sensing, and nanophotonic circuits. However, their strong SH response is limited by nanometer-scale light-matter interaction and material impurities. Although there is considerable work towards engineering TMDs for enhancing their nonlinear responses, all-optical methods are still in the exploration stages. In this work, we incorporate, to the best of our knowledge, the first experimental demonstrations of feedback-based wavefront shaping (WFS) techniques in atomically thin media to reveal and enhance the weak SH generation of monolayer WS2. Phase tuning of the incident wavefront leads to localized regions of high-intensity fundamental light, increasing the intensity of SH generation by up to an order of magnitude in targeted regions. We enhance the local conversion efficiencies from monolayer WS2 up to 41 times from phase-only modulation. Furthermore, by introducing a shift in the transverse phase structure, we generate observable SH generation at the destructively interfering grain boundaries of polycrystalline monolayers. This method allows for all-optical tuning of TMDs nonlinear responses, opening up possibilities for dynamic signal routing and on-demand enhancement in nanoscale photonic systems.

Minimal Shortfall Strategies for Liquidation of a Basket of Stocks using Reinforcement Learning

This paper studies the ubiquitous problem of liquidating large quantities of highly correlated stocks, a task frequently encountered by institutional investors and proprietary trading firms. Traditional methods in this setting suffer from the curse of dimensionality, making them impractical for high-dimensional problems. In this work, we propose a novel method based on stochastic optimal control to optimally tackle this complex multidimensional problem. The proposed method minimizes the overall execution shortfall of highly correlated stocks using a reinforcement learning approach. We rigorously establish the convergence of our optimal trading strategy and present an implementation of our algorithm using intra-day market data.

Chiral phonons of honeycomb-type bilayer Wigner crystals

We theoretically investigated the chiral phonons of honeycomb-type bilayer Wigner crystals recently discovered in van der Waals structures of layered transition metal dichalcogenides. These chiral phonons can emerge under the inversion symmetry breaking introduced by an effective mass imbalance between the two layers or a moiré potential in one layer, as well as under the time-reversal symmetry breaking realized by applying a magnetic field. Considering the wide tunability of layered materials, the frequencies and chirality values of phonons can both be tuned by varying the system parameters. These findings suggest that bilayer honeycomb-type Wigner crystals can serve as an exciting new platform for studying chiral phonons.

Stably unactivated neurons in ReLU neural networks

The choice of architecture of a neural network influences which functions will be realizable by that neural network and, as a result, studying the expressiveness of a chosen architecture has received much attention. In ReLU neural networks, the presence of stably unactivated neurons can reduce the network's expressiveness. In this work, we investigate the probability of a neuron in the second hidden layer of such neural networks being stably unactivated when the weights and biases are initialized from symmetric probability distributions. For networks with input dimension $n_0$, we prove that if the first hidden layer has $n_0+1$ neurons then this probability is exactly $\frac{2^{n_0}+1}{4^{n_0+1}}$, and if the first hidden layer has $n_1$ neurons, $n_1 \le n_0$, then the probability is $\frac{1}{2^{n_1+1}}$. Finally, for the case when the first hidden layer has more neurons than $n_0+1$, a conjecture is proposed along with the rationale. Computational evidence is presented to support the conjecture.

Interlayer couplings in homobilayer structures of MSi2X4 (M = Mo/W, X = N/P/As)

We investigated the interlayer coupling effect in homobilayer structures of MSi2X4 with M = Mo/W and X = N/P/As. Through the combination of first-principles calculations and analytical formulations, the equilibrium interlayer distance, layer energy difference and interlayer hopping strength are obtained for all six MSi2X4 materials, which are found to be insensitive to the type of M atom but differ significantly between X = N and X = P/As. In homobilayers with close to 0° twist angles, the interlayer charge redistribution introduces a stacking-dependent interlayer electrostatic potential with a magnitude reaching 0.1 eV in MSi2N4, suggesting that it can be an excellent candidate for studying the sliding ferroelectricity. The interlayer hopping strengths are found to be as large as several tens meV at valence band maxima positions K and Γ, and ~ 1 meV at the conduction band edge K. The resultant layer-hybridizations vary in a large range under different stacking registries, which can be used to simulate honeycomb lattice models with both trivial and non-trivial band topologies.

On the Quenched Functional Central Limit Theorem for Stationary Random Fields under Projective Criteria

In this work we study and establish some quenched functional Central Limit Theorems (CLTs) for stationary random fields under a projective criteria. These results are functional generalizations of the theorems obtained by Zhang et al. (2020) and of the quenched functional CLTs for ortho-martingales established by Peligrad and Voln{ý} (2020) to random fields satisfying a Hannan type projective condition. In the work of Zhang et al. (2020), the authors have already proven a quenched functional CLT however the assumptions were not optimal as they require the existence of a 2 + $δ$-moment. In this article, we establish the results under weaker assumptions, namely we only require an Orlicz space condition to hold. The methods used to obtain these generalizations are somewhat similar to the ones used by Zhang et al. (2020) but we improve on them in order to obtain results within the functional framework. Moreover, a Rosenthal type inequality for said Orlicz space is also derived and used to obtain a sufficient condition analogous to that of Theorem 4.4 in the work of Zhang et al. (2020). Finally, we apply our new results to derive some quenched functional CLTs under weak assumptions for a variety of stochastic processes.

An equivalent reformulation and multi-proximity gradient algorithms for a class of nonsmooth fractional programming

In this paper, we consider a class of structured fractional programs, where the numerator part is the sum of a block-separable (possibly nonsmooth nonconvex) function and a locally Lipschitz differentiable (possibly nonconvex) function, while the denominator is a convex (possibly nonsmooth) function. We first present a novel reformulation for the original problem and show the relationship between optimal solutions, critical points and KL exponents of these two problems. Inspired by the reformulation, we propose a flexible framework of multi-proximity gradient algorithms (MPGA), which computes the proximity operator with respect to the Fenchel conjugate associated with the convex denominator of the original problem rather than evaluating its subgradient as in the existing methods. Also, MPGA employs a nonmonotone linear-search scheme in its gradient descent step, since the smooth part in the numerator of the original problem is not globally Lipschitz differentiable. Based on the framework of MPGA, we develop two specific algorithms, namely, cyclic MPGA and randomized MPGA, and establish their subsequential convergence under mild conditions. Moreover, the sequential convergence of cyclic MPGA with the monotone line-search (CMPGA_ML) is guaranteed if the extended objective associated with the reformulated problem satisfies the Kurdyka-Łojasiewicz (KL) property and some other mild assumptions. In particular, we prove that the corresponding KL exponents are 1/2 for several special cases of the fractional programs, and so, CMPGA_ML exhibits a linear convergence rate. Finally, some preliminary numerical experiments are performed to demonstrate the efficiency of our proposed algorithms.

IPMix: Label-Preserving Data Augmentation Method for Training Robust Classifiers

Data augmentation has been proven effective for training high-accuracy convolutional neural network classifiers by preventing overfitting. However, building deep neural networks in real-world scenarios requires not only high accuracy on clean data but also robustness when data distributions shift. While prior methods have proposed that there is a trade-off between accuracy and robustness, we propose IPMix, a simple data augmentation approach to improve robustness without hurting clean accuracy. IPMix integrates three levels of data augmentation (image-level, patch-level, and pixel-level) into a coherent and label-preserving technique to increase the diversity of training data with limited computational overhead. To further improve the robustness, IPMix introduces structural complexity at different levels to generate more diverse images and adopts the random mixing method for multi-scale information fusion. Experiments demonstrate that IPMix outperforms state-of-the-art corruption robustness on CIFAR-C and ImageNet-C. In addition, we show that IPMix also significantly improves the other safety measures, including robustness to adversarial perturbations, calibration, prediction consistency, and anomaly detection, achieving state-of-the-art or comparable results on several benchmarks, including ImageNet-R, ImageNet-A, and ImageNet-O.

Smooth Symmetric Transonic Isothermal Flows with Nonzero Angular Velocity

In this paper, the steady inviscid flows with radial symmetry for the isothermal Euler system are studied in an annulus. We present a complete classification of transonic radially symmetric flow patterns in term of physical boundary conditions at the inner and outer circle. By solving the one side boundary problem, we obtain that there exist accelerating or decelerating smooth transonic flows in an annulus. Moreover, the structural stability of these smooth symmetric transonic flows with nonzero angular velocity are further investigated. Furthermore, we examine the transonic solutions with shocks as well via prescribing suitable boundary conditions on the inner and outer circle.

A Successive Two-stage Method for Sparse Generalized Eigenvalue Problems

The Sparse Generalized Eigenvalue Problem (sGEP), a pervasive challenge in statistical learning methods including sparse principal component analysis, sparse Fisher's discriminant analysis, and sparse canonical correlation analysis, presents significant computational complexity due to its NP-hardness. The primary aim of sGEP is to derive a sparse vector approximation of the largest generalized eigenvector, effectively posing this as a sparse optimization problem. Conventional algorithms for sGEP, however, often succumb to local optima and exhibit significant dependency on initial points. This predicament necessitates a more refined approach to avoid local optima and achieve an improved solution in terms of sGEP's objective value, which we address in this paper through a novel successive two-stage method. The first stage of this method incorporates an algorithm for sGEP capable of yielding a stationary point from any initial point. The subsequent stage refines this stationary point by adjusting its support, resulting in a point with an enhanced objective value relative to the original stationary point. This support adjustment is achieved through a novel procedure we have named support alteration. The final point derived from the second stage then serves as the initial point for the algorithm in the first stage, creating a cyclical process that continues until a predetermined stopping criterion is satisfied. We also provide a comprehensive convergence analysis of this process. Through extensive experimentation under various settings, our method has demonstrated significant improvements in the objective value of sGEP compared to existing methodologies, underscoring its potential as a valuable tool in statistical learning and optimization.

Smooth Subsonic and Transonic Flows with Nonzero Angular Velocity and Vorticity to steady Euler-Poisson system in a Concentric Cylinder

In this paper, both smooth subsonic and transonic flows to steady Euler-Poisson system in a concentric cylinder are studied. We first establish the existence of cylindrically symmetric smooth subsonic and transonic flows to steady Euler-Poisson system in a concentric cylinder. On one hand, we investigate the structural stability of smooth cylindrically symmetric subsonic flows under three-dimensional perturbations on the inner and outer cylinders. On the other hand, the structural stability of smooth transonic flows under the axi-symmetric perturbations are examined. There is no any restrictions on the background subsonic and transonic solutions. A deformation-curl-Poisson decomposition to the steady Euler-Poisson system is utilized in our work to deal with the hyperbolic-elliptic mixed structure in subsonic region. It should be emphasized that there is a special structure of the steady Euler-Poisson system which yields a priori estimates and uniqueness of a second order elliptic system for the velocity potential and the electrostatic potential.

Face Image Quality Enhancement Study for Face Recognition

Unconstrained face recognition is an active research area among computer vision and biometric researchers for many years now. Still the problem of face recognition in low quality photos has not been well-studied so far. In this paper, we explore the face recognition performance on low quality photos, and we try to improve the accuracy in dealing with low quality face images. We assemble a large database with low quality photos, and examine the performance of face recognition algorithms for three different quality sets. Using state-of-the-art facial image enhancement approaches, we explore the face recognition performance for the enhanced face images. To perform this without experimental bias, we have developed a new protocol for recognition with low quality face photos and validate the performance experimentally. Our designed protocol for face recognition with low quality face images can be useful to other researchers. Moreover, experiment results show some of the challenging aspects of this problem.

Facial Landmark Detection Evaluation on MOBIO Database

MOBIO is a bi-modal database that was captured almost exclusively on mobile phones. It aims to improve research into deploying biometric techniques to mobile devices. Research has been shown that face and speaker recognition can be performed in a mobile environment. Facial landmark localization aims at finding the coordinates of a set of pre-defined key points for 2D face images. A facial landmark usually has specific semantic meaning, e.g. nose tip or eye centre, which provides rich geometric information for other face analysis tasks such as face recognition, emotion estimation and 3D face reconstruction. Pretty much facial landmark detection methods adopt still face databases, such as 300W, AFW, AFLW, or COFW, for evaluation, but seldomly use mobile data. Our work is first to perform facial landmark detection evaluation on the mobile still data, i.e., face images from MOBIO database. About 20,600 face images have been extracted from this audio-visual database and manually labeled with 22 landmarks as the groundtruth. Several state-of-the-art facial landmark detection methods are adopted to evaluate their performance on these data. The result shows that the data from MOBIO database is pretty challenging. This database can be a new challenging one for facial landmark detection evaluation.

A Study on the Impact of Face Image Quality on Face Recognition in the Wild

Deep learning has received increasing interests in face recognition recently. Large quantities of deep learning methods have been proposed to handle various problems appeared in face recognition. Quite a lot deep methods claimed that they have gained or even surpassed human-level face verification performance in certain databases. As we know, face image quality poses a great challenge to traditional face recognition methods, e.g. model-driven methods with hand-crafted features. However, a little research focus on the impact of face image quality on deep learning methods, and even human performance. Therefore, we raise a question: Is face image quality still one of the challenges for deep learning based face recognition, especially in unconstrained condition. Based on this, we further investigate this problem on human level. In this paper, we partition face images into three different quality sets to evaluate the performance of deep learning methods on cross-quality face images in the wild, and then design a human face verification experiment on these cross-quality data. The result indicates that quality issue still needs to be studied thoroughly in deep learning, human own better capability in building the relations between different face images with large quality gaps, and saying deep learning method surpasses human-level is too optimistic.

Parameterized proximal-gradient algorithms for L1/L2 sparse signal recovery

The ratio of L1 and L2 norms (L1/L2), serving as a sparse promoting function, receives considerable attentions recently due to its effectiveness for sparse signal recovery. In this paper, we propose an L1/L2 based penalty model for recovering sparse signals from noiseless or noisy observations. It is proven that stationary points of the proposed problem tend to those of the elliptically constrained L1/L2 minimization problem as the smoothing parameter goes to zero. Moreover, inspired by the parametric approach for the fractional programming, we design a parameterized proximal-gradient algorithm (PPGA) as well as its line search counterpart (PPGA_L) for solving the proposed model. The closed-form solution of the involved proximity operator is derived, which enable the efficiency of the proposed algorithms. We establish the global convergence of the entire sequences generated by PPGA and PPGA_L with monotone objective values by taking advantage of the fact that the objective of the proposed model is a KL function. Numerical experiments show the efficiency of the proposed algorithms over the state-of-the-art methods in both noiseless and noisy sparse signal recovery problems.

A Game-Theoretic Framework for AI Governance

As a transformative general-purpose technology, AI has empowered various industries and will continue to shape our lives through ubiquitous applications. Despite the enormous benefits from wide-spread AI deployment, it is crucial to address associated downside risks and therefore ensure AI advances are safe, fair, responsible, and aligned with human values. To do so, we need to establish effective AI governance. In this work, we show that the strategic interaction between the regulatory agencies and AI firms has an intrinsic structure reminiscent of a Stackelberg game, which motivates us to propose a game-theoretic modeling framework for AI governance. In particular, we formulate such interaction as a Stackelberg game composed of a leader and a follower, which captures the underlying game structure compared to its simultaneous play counterparts. Furthermore, the choice of the leader naturally gives rise to two settings. And we demonstrate that our proposed model can serves as a unified AI governance framework from two aspects: firstly we can map one setting to the AI governance of civil domains and the other to the safety-critical and military domains, secondly, the two settings of governance could be chosen contingent on the capability of the intelligent systems. To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first to use game theory for analyzing and structuring AI governance. We also discuss promising directions and hope this can help stimulate research interest in this interdisciplinary area. On a high, we hope this work would contribute to develop a new paradigm for technology policy: the quantitative and AI-driven methods for the technology policy field, which holds significant promise for overcoming many shortcomings of existing qualitative approaches.
