Renormalization group, operator product expansion and anomalous scaling in models of passive turbulent advection

The field theoretic renormalization group is applied to Kraichnan's model of a passive scalar quantity advected by the Gaussian velocity field with the pair correlation function $\proptoδ(t-t')/k^{d+ε}$. Inertial-range anomalous scaling for the structure functions and various pair correlators is established as a consequence of the existence in the corresponding operator product expansions of ``dangerous'' composite operators (powers of the local dissipation rate), whose {\it negative} critical dimensions determine anomalous exponents. The latter are calculated to order $ε^3$ of the $ε$ expansion (three-loop approximation).

Renormalization group in the statistical theory of turbulence: Two-loop approximation

The field theoretic renormalization group is applied to the stochastic Navier--Stokes equation that describes fully developed fluid turbulence. The complete two-loop calculation of the renormalization constant, the beta function and the fixed point is performed. The ultraviolet correction exponent, the Kolmogorov constant and the inertial-range skewness factor are derived to second order of the $ε$ expansion.

Anomalous scaling of a passive scalar advected by the turbulent velocity field with finite correlation time: Two-loop approximation

The renormalization group and operator product expansion are applied to the model of a passive scalar quantity advected by the Gaussian self-similar velocity field with finite, and not small, correlation time. The inertial-range energy spectrum of the velocity is chosen in the form $E(k)\propto k^{1-2\eps}$, and the correlation time at the wavenumber $k$ scales as $k^{-2+η}$. Inertial-range anomalous scaling for the structure functions and other correlation functions emerges as a consequence of the existence in the model of composite operators with negative scaling dimensions, identified with anomalous exponents. For $η>\eps$, these exponents are the same as in the rapid-change limit of the model; for $η<\eps$, they are the same as in the limit of a time-independent (quenched) velocity field. For $\eps=η$ (local turnover exponent), the anomalous exponents are nonuniversal through the dependence on a dimensionless parameter, the ratio of the velocity correlation time and the scalar turnover time. The universality reveals itself, however, only in the second order of the $\eps$ expansion, and the exponents are derived to order $O(\eps^{2})$, including anisotropic contributions. It is shown that, for moderate $n$, the order of the structure function, and $d$, the space dimensionality, finite correlation time enhances the intermittency in comparison with the both limits: the rapid-change and quenched ones. The situation changes when $n$ and/or $d$ become large enough: the correction to the rapid-change limit due to the finite correlation time is positive (that is, the anomalous scaling is suppressed), it is maximal for the quenched limit and monotonically decreases as the correlation time tends to zero.

Calculation of the anomalous exponents in the rapid-change model of passive scalar advection to order $\varepsilon^{3}$

The field theoretic renormalization group and operator product expansion are applied to the model of a passive scalar advected by the Gaussian velocity field with zero mean and correlation function $\proptoδ(t-t')/k^{d+\eps}$. Inertial-range anomalous exponents, identified with the critical dimensions of various scalar and tensor composite operators constructed of the scalar gradients, are calculated within the $\varepsilon$ expansion to order $\varepsilon^{3}$ (three-loop approximation), including the exponents in anisotropic sectors. The main goal of the paper is to give the complete derivation of this third-order result, and to present and explain in detail the corresponding calculational techniques. The character and convergence properties of the $\varepsilon$ expansion are discussed; the improved ``inverse'' $\varepsilon$ expansion is proposed and the comparison with the existing nonperturbative results is given.

Anomalous scaling, nonlocality and anisotropy in a model of the passively advected vector field

A model of the passive vector quantity advected by a Gaussian time-decorrelated self-similar velocity field is studied; the effects of pressure and large-scale anisotropy are discussed. The inertial-range behavior of the pair correlation function is described by an infinite family of scaling exponents, which satisfy exact transcendental equations derived explicitly in d dimensions. The exponents are organized in a hierarchical order according to their degree of anisotropy, with the spectrum unbounded from above and the leading exponent coming from the isotropic sector. For the higher-order structure functions, the anomalous scaling behavior is a consequence of the existence in the corresponding operator product expansions of ``dangerous'' composite operators, whose negative critical dimensions determine the exponents. A close formal resemblance of the model with the stirred NS equation reveals itself in the mixing of operators. Using the RG, the anomalous exponents are calculated in the one-loop approximation for the even structure functions up to the twelfth order.

Pressure and intermittency in passive vector turbulence

We investigate the scaling properties a model of passive vector turbulence with pressure and in the presence of a large-scale anisotropy. The leading scaling exponents of the structure functions are proven to be anomalous. The anisotropic exponents are organized in hierarchical families growing without bound with the degree of anisotropy. Nonlocality produces poles in the inertial-range dynamics corresponding to the dimensional scaling solution. The increase with the Péclet number of hyperskewness and higher odd-dimensional ratios signals the persistence of anisotropy effects also in the inertial range.

Anomalous exponents in the rapid-change model of the passive scalar advection in the order $ε^{3}$

Field theoretic renormalization group is applied to the Kraichnan model of a passive scalar advected by the Gaussian velocity field with the covariance $<{\bf v}(t,{\bf x}){\bf v}(t',{\bf x})> - <{\bf v}(t,{\bf x}){\bf v}(t',{\bf x'})> \proptoδ(t-t')|{\bf x}-{\bf x'} |^ε$. Inertial-range anomalous exponents, related to the scaling dimensions of tensor composite operators built of the scalar gradients, are calculated to the order $ε^{3}$ of the $ε$ expansion. The nature and the convergence of the $ε$ expansion in the models of turbulence is are briefly discussed.

Anomalous scaling in two models of the passive scalar advection: Effects of anisotropy and compressibility

The problem of the effects of compressibility and large-scale anisotropy on anomalous scaling behavior is considered for two models describing passive advection of scalar density and tracer fields. The advecting velocity field is Gaussian, $δ$-correlated in time, and scales with a positive exponent $ε$. Explicit inertial-range expressions for the scalar correlation functions are obtained; they are represented by superpositions of power laws with nonuniversal amplitudes and universal (dependent only on $ε$ and $α$, the compressibility parameter) anomalous exponents. The complete set of anomalous exponents for the pair correlation functions is found nonperturbatively, in any space dimension d, using the zero-mode technique. For higher-order correlation functions, the anomalous exponents are calculated to $O(ε^{2})$ using the renormalization group. Like in the incompressible case, the exponents exhibit a hierarchy related to the degree of anisotropy: the leading contributions to the even correlation functions are given by the exponents from the isotropic shell, in agreement with the idea of restored small-scale isotropy. As the degree of compressibility increases, the corrections become closer to the leading terms. The small-scale anisotropy reveals itself in the odd ratios of correlation functions: the skewness factor is slowly decreasing going down to small scales for the incompressible case, but becomes increasing if $α$ is large enough. The higher odd dimensionless ratios (hyperskewness etc.) increase, thus signalling the persistent small-scale anisotropy; this effect becomes more pronounced for larger values of $α$.

"Toy models" of turbulent convection and the hypothesis of the local isotropy restoration

A brief review is given of recent results devoted to the effects of large-scale anisotropy on the inertial-range statistics of the passive scalar quantity $θ(t,{\bf x})$, advected by the synthetic turbulent velocity field with the covariance $\proptoδ(t-t')|{\bf x}-{\bf x'}|^{\eps}$. Inertial-range anomalous scaling behavior is established, and explicit asymptotic expressions for the structure functions $ S_n (\r) \equiv < [θ(t,{\bf x}+\r)-θ(t,{\bf x})]^{n}>$ are obtained; they are represented by superpositions of power laws with universal (independent of the anisotropy parameters) anomalous exponents, calculated to the first order in $\eps$ in any space dimension. The exponents are associated with tensor composite operators built of the scalar gradients, and exhibit a kind of hierarchy related to the degree of anisotropy: the less is the rank, the less is the dimension and, consequently, the more important is the contribution to the inertial-range behavior. The leading terms of the even (odd) structure functions are given by the scalar (vector) operators. The small-scale anisotropy reveals itself in odd correlation functions: for the incompressible velocity field, $S_{3}/S_{2}^{3/2}$ decreases going down towards to the depth of the inertial range, while the higher-order odd ratios increase; if the compressibility is strong enough, the skewness factor also becomes increasing.

Anomalous scaling of a passive scalar in the presence of strong anisotropy

Field theoretic renormalization group and the operator product expansion are applied to a model of a passive scalar field, advected by the Gaussian strongly anisotropic velocity field. Inertial-range anomalous scaling behavior is established, and explicit asymptotic expressions for the n-th order structure functions of scalar field are obtained; they are represented by superpositions of power laws with nonuniversal (dependent on the anisotropy parameters) anomalous exponents. In the limit of vanishing anisotropy, the exponents are associated with tensor composite operators built of the scalar gradients, and exhibit a kind of hierarchy related to the degree of anisotropy: the less is the rank, the less is the dimension and, consequently, the more important is the contribution to the inertial-range behavior. The leading terms of the even (odd) structure functions are given by the scalar (vector) operators. For the finite anisotropy, the exponents cannot be associated with individual operators (which are essentially ``mixed'' in renormalization), but the aforementioned hierarchy survives for all the cases studied. The second-order structure function is studied in more detail using the renormalization group and zero-mode techniques.

Manifestation of anisotropy persistence in the hierarchies of MHD scaling exponents

The first example of a turbulent system where the failure of the hypothesis of small-scale isotropy restoration is detectable both in the `flattening' of the inertial-range scaling exponent hierarchy, and in the behavior of odd-order dimensionless ratios, e.g., skewness and hyperskewness, is presented. Specifically, within the kinematic approximation in magnetohydrodynamical turbulence, we show that for compressible flows, the isotropic contribution to the scaling of magnetic correlation functions and the first anisotropic ones may become practically indistinguishable. Moreover, skewness factor now diverges as the Péclet number goes to infinity, a further indication of small-scale anisotropy.

Persistence of small-scale anisotropies and anomalous scaling in a model of magnetohydrodynamics turbulence

The problem of anomalous scaling in magnetohydrodynamics turbulence is considered within the framework of the kinematic approximation, in the presence of a large-scale background magnetic field. The velocity field is Gaussian, $δ$-correlated in time, and scales with a positive exponent $ξ$. Explicit inertial-range expressions for the magnetic correlation functions are obtained; they are represented by superpositions of power laws with non-universal amplitudes and universal (independent of the anisotropy and forcing) anomalous exponents. The complete set of anomalous exponents for the pair correlation function is found non-perturbatively, in any space dimension $d$, using the zero-mode technique. For higher-order correlation functions, the anomalous exponents are calculated to $O(ξ)$ using the renormalization group. The exponents exhibit a hierarchy related to the degree of anisotropy; the leading contributions to the even correlation functions are given by the exponents from the isotropic shell, in agreement with the idea of restored small-scale isotropy. Conversely, the small-scale anisotropy reveals itself in the odd correlation functions : the skewness factor is slowly decreasing going down to small scales and higher odd dimensionless ratios (hyperskewness etc.) dramatically increase, thus diverging in the $r\to 0$ limit.

Anomalous scaling regimes of a passive scalar advected by the synthetic velocity field

The field theoretic renormalization group (RG) is applied to the problem of a passive scalar advected by the Gaussian self-similar velocity field with finite correlation time and in the presence of an imposed linear mean gradient. The energy spectrum in the inertial range has the form $E(k)\propto k^{1-ε}$, and the correlation time at the wavenumber k scales as $k^{-2+η}$. It is shown that, depending on the values of the exponents $ε$ and $η$, the model in the inertial range reveals various types of scaling regimes associated with the infrared stable fixed points of the RG equations: diffusive-type regimes for which the advection can be treated within ordinary perturbation theory, and three nontrivial convection-type regimes for which the correlation functions exhibit anomalous scaling behavior. Explicit asymptotic expressions for the structure functions and other correlation functions are obtained; they are represented by superpositions of power laws with nonuniversal amplitudes and universal (independent of the anisotropy) anomalous exponents, calculated to the first order in $ε$ and $η$ in any space dimension. For the first nontrivial regime the anomalous exponents are the same as in the rapid-change version of the model; for the second they are the same as in the model with time-independent (frozen) velocity field. In these regimes, the anomalous exponents are universal in the sense that they depend only on the exponents entering into the velocity correlator. For the last regime the exponents are nonuniversal (they can depend also on the amplitudes); however, the nonuniversality can reveal itself only in the second order of the RG expansion. Anomalous scaling of a passive scalar advected by the synthetic compressible flow

The field theoretic renormalization group and operator product expansion are applied to the problem of a passive scalar advected by the Gaussian nonsolenoidal velocity field with finite correlation time, in the presence of large-scale anisotropy. The energy spectrum of the velocity in the inertial range has the form $E(k)\propto k^{1-ε}$, and the correlation time at the wavenumber $k$ scales as $k^{-2+η}$. It is shown that, depending on the values of the exponents $ε$ and $η$, the model exhibits various types of inertial-range scaling regimes with nontrivial anomalous exponents. These anomalous exponents are determined by the critical dimensions of tensor composite operators built of the scalar gradients, and exhibit a kind of hierarchy related to the degree of anisotropy: the less is the rank, the less is the dimension and, consequently, the more important is the contribution to the inertial-range behavior. The leading terms of the even (odd) structure functions are given by the scalar (vector) operators. The anomalous exponents depend explicitly on the degree of compressibility.

Renormalization Group, Operator Product Expansion, and Anomalous Scaling in a Model of Advected Passive Scalar

Field theoretical renormalization group methods are applied to the Obukhov--Kraichnan model of a passive scalar advected by the Gaussian velocity field with the covariance $<{\bf v}(t,{\bf x}){\bf v}(t',{\bf x})> - < v(t,{\bf x}){\bf v}(t',x')> \proptoδ(t-t')| x-x'|^{\eps}$. Inertial range anomalous scaling for the structure functions and various pair correlators is established as a consequence of the existence in the corresponding operator product expansions of ``dangerous'' composite operators [powers of the local dissipation rate], whose negative critical dimensions determine anomalous exponents. The main technical result is the calculation of the anomalous exponents in the order $\eps^{2}$ of the $\eps$ expansion. Generalization of the results obtained to the case of a ``slow'' velocity field is also presented.
