Studies of highly-boosted top quarks near the TeV scale using jet masses at the LHC

Studies of highly-boosted top quarks produced inclusively in pp collisions at 14 TeV are discussed. The hadronic decays of boosted top quarks was studied in a data-driven approach by analysing shapes of jet-mass distributions. Using Monte Carlo models after a fast detector simulation, it is shown that inclusive production of boosted top quarks can be observed if it has a cross section at least twice larger than the prediction from the approximate next-to-next-to-leading-order (aNNLO) calculation for the ttbar process. The ttbar process with the nominal aNNLO strength can be measured using the masses of jets after a b-tagging.

The Higgs Working Group: Summary Report 2003

Theoretical progress in Higgs boson production and background processes is discussed with particular emphasis on QCD corrections at and beyond next-to-leading order as well as next-to-leading order electroweak corrections. The residual theoretical uncertainties of the investigated processes are estimated in detail. Moreover, recent investigations of the MSSM Higgs sector and other extensions of the SM Higgs sector are presented. The potential of the LHC and a high-energy linear e+e- collider for the measurement of Higgs couplings is analyzed.

Les Houches 'Physics at Tev Colliders 2003' QCD/SM Working Group: Summary Report

This report documents the results obtained by the Working Group on Quantum Chromodynamics and the Standard Model for the Workshop `Physics at TeV Colliders'', Les Houches, France, 26 May - 6 June 2003. After a Monte Guide description, the first contributions report on progress in describing multiple interactions, important for the LHC, and underlying events. An announcement of a Monte Carlo database, under construction, is then followed by a number of contributions improving parton shower descriptions. Subsequently, a large number of contributions address resummations in various forms, after which follow studies of QCD effects in pion pair, top quark pair and photon pair plus jet production. After a study of electroweak corrections to hadronic precision observables, the report ends by presenting recent progress in methods to compute finite order corrections at one-loop with many legs, and at two-loop.

Threshold Effects in Charm Hadroproduction

We describe calculations of $c \bar c$ production to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) and next-to-next-to-leading logarithm (NNLL) near threshold in $pp$ and $π^- p$ interactions. We study the relevance of these calculations for existing $c \bar c$ total cross section data by examining their sensitivity to partonic threshold kinematics, their convergence properties and scale dependence.

Resummation of transverse momentum and mass logarithms in DIS heavy-quark production

Differential distributions for heavy quark production depend on the heavy quark mass and other momentum scales, which can yield additional large logarithms and inhibit accurate predictions. Logarithms involving the heavy quark mass can be summed in heavy quark parton distribution functions in the ACOT factorization scheme. A second class of logarithms involving the heavy-quark transverse momentum can be summed using an extension of Collins-Soper-Sterman (CSS) formalism. We perform a systematic summation of logarithms of both types, thereby obtaining an accurate description of heavy-quark differential distributions at all energies. Our method essentially combines the ACOT and CSS approaches. As an example, we present angular distributions for bottom quarks produced in parity-conserving events at large momentum transfers Q at the ep collider HERA.

Understanding Bottom Production

We describe calculations of b b-bar production to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) and next-to-next-to-leading logarithm (NNLL) near threshold in pp interactions. Our calculations are in good agreement with the b b-bar total cross section measured by HERA-B.

Soft and collinear parton radiation in heavy quark production

When the energy of the heavy quark is comparable with its mass, it is natural to attribute this heavy quark to the hard part of the reaction. At large energies, this approach is impractical due to large logarithms from intensive QCD radiation affecting both inclusive and differential observables. We present a formalism for all-order summation of such logarithms and reliable description of heavy-quark distributions at all energies. As an illustration, we calculate angular distributions of B-mesons produced in neutral-current events at large momentum transfers at the ep collider HERA.

The QCD/SM Working Group: Summary Report

This Report documents the results obtained by the Working Group on Quantum ChromoDynamics and the Standard Model for the Workshop ``Physics at TeV Colliders'', Les Houches, France, 21 May - 1 June 2001. The account of uncertainties in Parton Distribution Functions is reviewed. Progresses in the description of multiparton final states at Next-to-Leading Order and the extension of calculations for precision QCD observables beyond this order are summarized. Various issues concerning the relevance of resummation for observables at TeV colliders is examined. Improvements to algorithms of jet reconstruction are discussed and predictions for diphoton and photon pi-zero production at the LHC are made for kinematic variables of interest regarding searches for a Higgs boson decaying into two photons. Finally, several improvements implemented in Monte-Carlo event generators are documented.

Summary: Working Group on QCD and Strong Interactions

In this summary of the considerations of the QCD working group at Snowmass 2001, the roles of quantum chromodynamics in the Standard Model and in the search for new physics are reviewed, with empahsis on frontier areas in the field. We discuss the importance of, and prospects for, precision QCD in perturbative and lattice calculations. We describe new ideas in the analysis of parton distribution functions and jet structure, and review progress in small-$x$ and in polarization.

Sudakov Resummation and Finite Order Expansions of Heavy Quark Hadroproduction Cross Sections

We resum Sudakov threshold enhancements in heavy quark hadroproduction for single-heavy quark inclusive and pair-inclusive kinematics. We expand these resummed results and derive analytical finite-order cross sections through next-to-next-to-leading order. This involves the construction of next-to-leading order matching conditions in color space. For the scale dependent terms we derive exact results using renormalization group methods. We study the effects of scale variations, scheme and kinematics choice on the partonic and hadronic cross sections, and provide estimates for top and bottom quark production cross sections.

Resummed heavy quark production cross sections to next-to-leading logarithm

We study how next-to-leading logarithms modify predictions from leading logarithmic soft-gluon resummation in the heavy quark production cross section near threshold. Numerical results are presented for top quark production at the Fermilab Tevatron and bottom quark production at fixed-target energies.

Bottom quark production cross section at HERA-B

The cross section for bottom quark production is calculated for the HERA-B experiment. We consider both the order $α_s^3$ cross section and the resummation of soft gluon corrections in all orders of QCD perturbation theory.

Bottom quark production cross section at fixed-target $pp$ experiments

The cross section for bottom quark production at fixed-target energies is calculated for a wide range of beam momenta. A detailed analysis is given for the HERA-B experiment. We consider both the order $α_s^3$ cross section and the resummation of soft gluon corrections in all orders of QCD perturbation theory. The inclusive transverse momentum and rapidity distributions, including resummation, for bottom quark production at HERA-B are also presented.

Top quark inclusive differential distributions

The inclusive transverse momentum and rapidity distributions for top quark production at the Fermilab Tevatron are presented both in order $\alpha_s^3$ in QCD and using the resummation of the leading soft gluon corrections in all orders of QCD perturbation theory. The resummed results are uniformly larger than the $O(\alpha_s^3)$ results for both distributions.
