Born series for s-wave scattering length and some exact results

In these notes the Born series for the $s$-wave scattering $a_0$ is calculated for a class of central potentials $V(r)$ up to sixth order in a dimensionless coupling strength $g$. Examples of exponentially decaying potentials as well truncated potentials involving a single length-scale $a$ are considered. In certain favorable cases the exact result for the $g$-dependent $s$-wave scattering length $a_0=A_0(g) a$ can be given in terms of special functions. The poles of $A_0(g)$ at increasing positive values of $g$ correspond to the thresholds, where $s$-wave bound-states occur successively. A scattering problem, where $A_0(g)$ is solvable in terms of elementary functions, is also presented.

Loop functions of sunset diagrams in 2+1 space-time dimensions

In these notes the relativistic $n$-body phase-phase is calculated iteratively in $2+1$ space-time dimensions for all $n$. The obtained result shows a simple power-law behavior $\alpha_n (\mu-M)^{n-2}/\mu$ with a dependence only on the total mass $M=m_1+\dots + m_n$. As a consequence of this feature, the $(n-1)$-loop integrals $J_n(-q^2)$ associated to sunset diagrams with $n$ internal lines can be expressed through of elementary (arctangent and logarithmic) functions, modulo polynomial terms in $q^2$ with regularization-dependent coefficients. An outlook to the analogous situation in $4+1$ space-time dimensions is given by computing the $n$-body phase-phases for $n=2,3,4,5$ with their totally symmetric dependence on the involved masses. Moreover, a digression to $1+1$ space-time dimensions reveals that there the three-body phase-space is already proportional to a complete elliptic integral.

Density-dependent NN-interaction from subleading chiral 3N-forces: Long-range terms

We derive from the subleading contributions to the chiral three-nucleon force (long-range terms, published in Phys.\,Rev.\,C\,77, 064004 (2008)) a density-dependent two-nucleon interaction $V_\text{med}$ in isospin-symmetric, spin-saturated nuclear matter. Following the division of the pertinent 3N-diagrams into two-pion exchange topology, two-pion-one-pion exchange topology and ring topology, we evaluate for these all self-closings and concatenations of nucleon-lines to an in-medium loop. The momentum and $k_f$-dependent potentials associated with the isospin operators ($1$ and $\vecτ_1\!\cdot\!\vecτ_2$) and five independent spin-structures are expressed in terms of functions, which are either given in closed analytical form or require at most one numerical integration. In the same way we treat the $2π$-exchange 3N-force up to fourth order. Our results for $V_\text{med}$ are most helpful to implement the long-range subleading chiral 3N-forces into nuclear many-body calculations.

$g$-factor and static quadrupole moment of $^{135}$Pr, $^{105}$Pd, and $^{187}$Au in wobbling motion

The $g$-factor and static quadrupole moment of the nuclides $^{135}$Pr, $^{105}$Pd, and $^{187}$Au in the wobbling motion are investigated in the particle-rotor model as functions of the total spin $I$. The $g$-factor of $^{105}\mathrm{Pd}$ increases with increasing $I$, due to the negative gyromagnetic ratio of a neutron valence-neutron. This behavior is in contrast to the decreasing $g$-factor of the other two nuclides, $^{135}$Pr and $^{187}$Au, which feature a valence-proton. The static quadrupole moment $Q$ depends on all three expectation values of the total angular momentum. It is smaller in the yrast band than in the wobbling band for the transverse wobblers $^{135}$Pr and $^{105}$Pd, while larger for the longitudinal wobbler $^{187}$Au.

Density-dependent NN-interaction from subsubleading chiral 3N-force: Intermediate-range contributions

From the subsubleading chiral three-nucleon force [intermediate-range contributions, published in Phys. Rev. C\,87, 054007 (2013)] a density-dependent NN-interaction $V_\text{med}$ is derived in isospin-symmetric nuclear matter. Following the division of the pertinent 3N-diagrams into two-pion-one-pion exchange topology and ring topology, one evaluates for these all selfclosings and concatenations of nucleon-lines to an in-medium loop. In the case of the $2π1π$-exchange topology, the momentum- and $k_f$-dependent potentials associated with the isospin-operators ($1$ and $\vecτ_1 \!\cdot\! \vecτ_2$) and five independent spin-structures require at most one numerical integration. For the more challenging (concatenations of the) ring diagrams proportional to $c_{1,2,3,4}$, one ends up with regularized double-integrals $\int_0^λdr\,r \int_0^{π/2} dψ$ from which the $λ^2$-divergence has been subtracted and the logarithmic piece $\sim \ln (m_π/λ)$ is isolated. The derived semi-analytical results are most helpful to implement the subsubleading chiral 3N-forces into nuclear many-body calculations.

Energy per particle of nuclear and neutron matter from subleading chiral three-nucleon interactions

We derive from the subleading contributions to the chiral three-nucleon interaction [published in Phys.~Rev.~C77, 064004 (2008) and Phys.~Rev.~C84, 054001 (2011)] their first-order contributions to the energy per particle of isospin-symmetric nuclear matter and pure neutron matter in an analytical way. For the variety of short-range and long-range terms that constitute the subleading chiral 3N-force the pertinent closed 3-ring, 2-ring, and 1-ring diagrams are evaluated. While 3-ring diagrams vanish by a spin-trace and the results for 2-ring diagrams can be given in terms of elementary functions of the ratio Fermi-momentum over pion mass, one ends up in most cases for the closed 1-ring diagrams with one-parameter integrals. The same treatment is applied to the subsubleading chiral three-nucleon interactions as far as these have been constructed up to now.

Density-dependent nn-potential from subleading chiral three-neutron forces: Long-range terms

The long-range terms of the subleading chiral three-nucleon force [published in Phys.\,Rev.\,C77, 064004 (2008)] are specified to the case of three neutrons. From these $3n$-interactions an effective density-dependent neutron-neutron potential $V_\text{med}$ in pure neutron matter is derived. Following the division of the pertinent 3n-diagrams into two-pion exchange, two-pion-one-pion exchange and ring topology, all self-closings and concatenations of two neutron-lines to an in-medium loop are evaluated. The momentum and $k_n$-dependent potentials associated with the spin-operators $1,\, \vecσ_1\!\cdot\!\vecσ_2,\, \vecσ_1\!\cdot\!\vec q\, \vecσ_2\!\cdot\!\vec q,\, i( \vecσ_1\!+\!\vecσ_2)\!\cdot \! (\vec q\!\times \! \vec p\,),\, (\vecσ_1\!\cdot\!\vec p\,\vecσ_2\!\cdot\!\vec p+\vecσ_1\!\cdot\!\vec p\,'\, \vecσ_2\!\cdot\!\vec p\,')$ and $ \vecσ_1\!\cdot \! (\vec q\!\times \! \vec p\,)\vecσ_2\!\cdot \! (\vec q\!\times \! \vec p\,)$ are expressed in terms of functions, which are either given in closed analytical form or require at most one numerical integration. The subsubleading chiral 3N-force is treated in the same way. The obtained results for $V_\text{med}$ are helpful to implement the long-range chiral three-body forces into advanced neutron matter calculations.

$g$-factor and static quadrupole moment for the wobbling mode in $^{133}$La

The $g$-factor and static quadrupole moment for the wobbling mode in the nuclide $^{133}$La are investigated as functions of the spin $I$by employing the particle rotor model. The model can reproduce the available experimental data of $g$-factor and static quadrupole moment. The properties of the $g$-factor and static quadrupole moment as functions of $I$ are interpreted by analyzing the angular momentum geometry of the collective rotor, proton-particle, and total nuclear system. It is demonstrated that the experimental value of the $g$-factor at the bandhead of the yrast band leads to the conclusion that the rotor angular momentum is $R\simeq 2$. Furthermore, the variation of the $g$-factor with the spin $I$ yields the information that the angular momenta of the proton-particle and total nuclear system are oriented parallel to each other. The negative values of the static quadrupole moment over the entire spin region are caused by an alignment of the total angular momentum mainly along the short axis. Static quadrupole moment differences between the wobbling and yrast band originate from a wobbling excitation with respect to the short axis.

Static quadrupole moments of nuclear chiral doublet bands

The static quadrupole moments (SQMs) of nuclear chiral doublet bands are investigated for the first time taking the particle-hole configuration $π(1h_{11/2}) \otimes ν(1h_{11/2})^{-1}$ with triaxial deformation parameters in the range $260^\circ \leq γ\leq 270^\circ$ as examples. The behavior of the SQM as a function of spin $I$ is illustrated by analyzing the components of the total angular momentum. It is found that in the region of chiral vibrations the SQMs of doublet bands are strongly varying with $I$, whereas in the region of static chirality the SQMs of doublet bands are almost constant. Hence, the measurement of SQMs provides a new criterion for distinguishing the modes of nuclear chirality. Moreover, in the high-spin region the SQMs can be approximated by an analytic formula with a proportionality to $\cosγ$ for both doublet bands. This provides a way to extract experimentally the triaxial deformation parameter $γ$ for chiral bands from the measured SQMs.

Effective field theory for triaxially deformed odd-mass nuclei

The effective field theory for collective rotations of triaxially deformed nuclei is generalized to odd-mass nuclei by including the angular momentum of the valence nucleon as an additional degree of freedom. The Hamiltonian is constructed up to next-to-leading order within the effective field theory formalism. The applicability of this Hamiltonian is examined by describing the wobbling bands observed in the lutetium isotopes $^{161,163,165,167}$Lu. It is found that by taking into account the next-to-leading order corrections, quartic in the rotor angular momentum, the wobbling energies $E_{\textrm{wob}}$ and spin-rotational frequency relations $ω(I)$ are better described than with the leading order Hamiltonian.

The Orbit and Size-Frequency Distribution of Long Period Comets Observed by Pan-STARRS1

We introduce a new technique to estimate the comet nuclear size frequency distribution (SFD) that combines a cometary activity model with a survey simulation and apply it to 150 long period comets (LPC) detected by the Pan-STARRS1 near-Earth object survey. The debiased LPC size-frequency distribution is in agreement with previous estimates for large comets with nuclear diameter $>\sim 1$~km but we measure a significant drop in the SFD slope for small objects with diameters $<1$~km and approaching only $100$~m diameter. Large objects have a slope $α_{big} = 0.72 \pm 0.09 (stat.) \pm 0.15 (sys.)$ while small objects behave as $α_{small} = 0.07 \pm 0.03 (stat.) \pm 0.09 (sys.)$ where the SFD is $\propto 10^{αH_N}$ and $H_N$ represents the cometary nuclear absolute magnitude. The total number of LPCs that are $>1$~km diameter and have perihelia $q<10$~au is $0.46 \pm 0.15 \times 10^9$ while there are only $2.4 \pm 0.5 (stat.) \pm 2 (sys.) \times 10^9$ objects with diameters $>100$~m due to the shallow slope of the SFD for diameters $<1$~m. We estimate that the total number of `potentially active' objects with diameters $\ge 1$~km in the Oort cloud, objects that would be defined as LPCs if their perihelia evolved to $<10$~au, is $(1.5\pm1)\times10^{12}$ with a combined mass of $1.3\pm0.9 \, M_{Earth}$. The debiased LPC orbit distribution is broadly in agreement with expectations from contemporary dynamical models but there are discrepancies that could point towards a future ability to disentangle the relative importance of stellar perturbations and galactic tides in producing the LPC population.

Behavior of the collective rotor in nuclear chiral motion

The behavior of the collective rotor in the chiral motion of triaxially deformed nuclei is investigated using the particle rotor model by transforming the wave functions from the $K$-representation to the $R$-representation. After examining the energy spectra of the doublet bands and their energy differences as functions of the triaxial deformation, the angular momentum components of the rotor, proton, neutron, and the total system are investigated. Moreover, the probability distributions of the rotor angular momentum ($R$-plots) and their projections onto the three principal axes ($K_R$-plots) are analyzed. The evolution of the chiral mode from a chiral vibration at the low spins to a chiral rotation at high spins is illustrated at triaxial deformations $γ=20^\circ$ and $30^\circ$.

The Pan-STARRS1 Surveys

Pan-STARRS1 has carried out a set of distinct synoptic imaging sky surveys including the $3π$ Steradian Survey and the Medium Deep Survey in 5 bands ($grizy_{P1}$). The mean 5$σ$ point source limiting sensitivities in the stacked 3$π$ Steradian Survey in $grizy_{P1}$ are (23.3, 23.2, 23.1, 22.3, 21.4) respectively. The upper bound on the systematic uncertainty in the photometric calibration across the sky is 7-12 millimag depending on the bandpass. The systematic uncertainty of the astrometric calibration using the Gaia frame comes from a comparison of the results with Gaia: the standard deviation of the mean and median residuals ($ Δra, Δdec $) are (2.3, 1.7) milliarcsec, and (3.1, 4.8) milliarcsec respectively. The Pan-STARRS system and the design of the PS1 surveys are described and an overview of the resulting image and catalog data products and their basic characteristics are described together with a summary of important results. The images, reduced data products, and derived data products from the Pan-STARRS1 surveys are available to the community from the Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes (MAST) at STScI.

Pan-STARRS Pixel Processing: Detrending, Warping, Stacking

The Pan-STARRS1 Science Consortium have carried out a set of imaging surveys using the 1.4 giga-pixel GPC1 camera on the PS1 telescope. As this camera is composed of many individual electronic readouts, and covers a very large field of view, great care was taken to ensure that the many instrumental effects were corrected to produce the most uniform detector response possible. We present the image detrending steps used as part of the processing of the data contained within the public release of the Pan-STARRS1 Data Release 1 (DR1). In addition to the single image processing, the methods used to transform the 375,573 individual exposures into a common sky-oriented grid are discussed, as well as those used to produce both the image stack and difference combination products.

The Pan-STARRS Data Processing System

The Pan-STARRS Data Processing System is responsible for the steps needed to downloaded, archive, and process all images obtained by the Pan-STARRS telescopes, including real-time detection of transient sources such as supernovae and moving objects including potentially hazardous asteroids. With a nightly data volume of up to 4 terabytes and an archive of over 4 petabytes of raw imagery, Pan-STARRS is solidly in the realm of Big Data astronomy. The full data processing system consists of several subsystems covering the wide range of necessary capabilities. This article describes the Image Processing Pipeline and its connections to both the summit data systems and the outward-facing systems downstream. The latter include the Moving Object Processing System (MOPS) & the public database: the Published Science Products Subsystem (PSPS).

Pan-STARRS Pixel Analysis : Source Detection and Characterization

Over 3 billion astronomical objects have been detected in the more than 22 million orthogonal transfer CCD images obtained as part of the Pan-STARRS1 $3π$ survey. Over 85 billion instances of those objects have been automatically detected and characterized by the Pan-STARRS Image Processing Pipeline photometry software, psphot. This fast, automatic, and reliable software was developed for the Pan-STARRS project, but is easily adaptable to images from other telescopes. We describe the analysis of the astronomical objects by psphot in general as well as for the specific case of the 3rd processing version used for the first two public releases of the Pan-STARRS $3π$ survey data, DR1 & DR2.

Spectral functions of nucleon form factors: Three-pion continua at low energies

We study the imaginary parts of the isoscalar electromagnetic and isovector axial form factors of the nucleon close to the $3π$-threshold in covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory. At the two-loop level, the contributions arising from leading and next-to-leading order chiral $πN$-vertices, as well as pion-induced excitations of virtual $Δ(1232)$-isobars, are calculated. It is found that the heavy baryon treatment overestimates substantially these $3π$-continua. From a phenomenological analysis, that includes the narrow $ω(783)$-resonance or the broad $a_1$-resonance, one can recognize small windows near threshold, where chiral $3π$-dynamics prevails. However, in the case of the isoscalar electromagnetic form factors $G_{E,M}^s(t)$, the radiative correction provided by the $π^0γ$-intermediate state turns out to be of similar size.
