Surface Plasmon-Driven Electron and Proton Acceleration without Grating Coupling

Surface plasmon (SP) excitation in intense laser interaction with solid target can be exploited for enhancing secondary emissions, in particular efficient acceleration of high charge electron bunches. Previous studies have mostly used grating coupling to allow SP excitation, which requires stringent laser contrast conditions to preserve the structural integrity of the target. Here we show via simulations that efficient SP electron acceleration for currently available short pulse lasers can occur in a flat foil irradiated at parallel or grazing incidence ($\sim 5^\circ$ with the target surface) without a surface modulation. In turn, the accelerated electrons can be effective for generating proton beams with narrow spectra peaked at $>$100 MeV energies for currently available laser drivers.

Effect of external magnetic field and dust grains on the properties of Ion Acoustic Waves

An experimental study to investigate the effect of an external magnetic field on the propagation of ion-acoustic waves (IAWs) has been carried out in hydrogen plasma containing two-temperature electrons and dust grains. A low-pressure hot cathode discharge method is opted for plasma production. The desired two electron groups with distinct temperatures are achieved by inserting two magnetic cages with a cusp-shaped magnetic field of different surface field strengths in the same chamber. The dust grains are dropped into the plasma with the help of a dust dropper, which gain negative charges by interacting with the plasma. The IAWs are excited with the help of a mesh-grid inserted into the plasma. A planar Langmuir probe is used as a detector to detect the IAWs. The time of flight technique has been applied to measure the phase velocity of the IAWs. The results suggest that in the presence of a magnetic field, the phase velocity of IAWs increases, whereas introducing the dust particles leads to the lower phase velocity. The magnetic field is believed to have a significant effect on the wave damping. This study will aid in utilising IAWs as a diagnostic tool to estimate plasma parameters in the presence of an external magnetic field. Moreover, the study might be useful for estimating the relative ion concentrations in a two positive ion species plasma, as well as the relative concentration of the negative ions in the presence of an external magnetic field.

Quantification of nonlinear absorption in ternary As-Sb-Se chalcogenide glasses

In this article, we studied intensity dependent third order nonlinear optical response in ternary As40Sb7Se53 and As40Sb10Se50 chalcogenide glasses by employing nanosecond Z-scan technique. At low intensity, we observed saturable absorption in As40Sb7Se53 which makes a remarkable transition to reverse saturable absorption at higher intensities. On the other hand, when the Sb concentration increased in As40Sb10Se50, saturable absorption disappears and the sample exhibits only two-photon absorption. Experimental results further indicate that the strong two-photon absorption in our samples can be exploited to fabricate high performance solid state optical limiting devices for next generation all-optical network.

Particle size dependence of magnetization and phase transition near T_N in multiferroic BiFeO3

We report results of a comprehensive study of the phase transition at T_N (~643 K) as a function of particle size in multiferroic BiFeO3 system. We employed electrical, thermal, and temperature dependent X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies in order to characterize the transition in a host of samples. We also carried out detailed magnetic measurements over a temperature regime 2-300 K under a magnetic field 100-10000 Oe both on bulk and nano-crystalline systems. While in the bulk system a sharp endothermic peak at T_N together with a broad feature, ranging over nearly ~150 K (Delta_T), could be observed in calorimetry, the nanoscale systems exhibit only the broad feature. The characteristic dielectric anomaly, expected at T_N, is found to occur both at T_O and T_N across Delta_T in the bulk sample. The Maxwell-Wagner component due to interfaces between heterogenous regions with different conductivities is also present. The magnetic properties, measured at lower temperature, corroborate our observations in calorimetry. The metastability increases in the nanoscale BiFeO3 with divergence between zero-field cooled (ZFC) and field cooled (FC) magnetization below ~100 K and faster magnetic relaxation. Interestingly, in nanoscale BiFeO3, one also observes finite coercivity at lower temperature which points out that suitable design of particle size and shape may induce ferromagnetism. The inhomogeneous distribution of Bi/Fe-ions and/or oxygen non-stoichiometry seems to be giving rise to broad features in thermal, magnetic as well as in electrical responses.

Magnetic Properties Of Ni-Mo Single Crystal Alloys: Theory and Experiment

The magnetization of Ni_{1-x}Mo_{x} single crystals with x=4,6,8 and 10 % by weight have been measured at 4.2K using a vibrating sample magnetometer and a Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID). The magnetization of the alloy at these low concentrations and at 0 K have been theoretically determined by using the tight-binding linearized muffin-tin orbital method coupled with augmented space recursion. The theoretical data are compared with the experiment.
