Breaking of de Sitter Symmetry

We show that an interacting spin-0 field on a de Sitter space background will break the underlying de Sitter symmetry. This is done first for a (1+1) de Sitter space where a boson-fermion correspondence permits us to solve certain interacting theories by transforming them into free ones of opposite statistics. A massless boson interacting by a sine-Gordon potential is shown to be equivalent to a free massive fermion with the mass depending on the de Sitter time thus breaking the symmetry explicitly. We then show that for larger dimensions and any boson potential, to one loop, an anomaly develops and the currents generating the de Sitter transformations are not conserved.

Anomaly breaking of de Sitter symmetry

To one loop order, interacting boson fields on de Sitter space have an "infrared" anomaly that breaks the de Sitter symmetry for all vacua save the Euclidian one. The divergence of a symmetry current at point $x$ has a non-zero contribution at the antipodal point ${\bar x}$.

Quantum mechanics and field theory with momentum defined on an anti-de-Sitter space

Relativistic dynamics with energy and momentum resricted to an anti-de-Sitter space is presented, specifically in the introduction of coordiate operators conjugate to such momenta. Definition of functions of these operators, their differentiation and integration, all necessary for the development of dynamics is presented. The resulting algebra differs from the standard Heisenberg one, notably in that the space-time coordinates do not commute among each other. The resulting time variable is discrete and the limit to continuous time presents difficulties. A parallel approach, in which an overlap function, between position and momentum states, is obtained from solutions of wave equations on this curved space are also investigated. This approach, likewise, has problems in the that high energy behavior of these overlap functions precludes a space-time definition of action functionals.

Instability of (1+1) de sitter space in the presence of interacting fields

Instabilities of two dimensional (1+1) de Sitter space induced by interacting fields are studied. As for the case of flat Minkowski space, several interacting fermion models can be translated into free boson ones and vice versa. It is found that interacting fermion theories do not lead to any instabilities, while the interacting bosonic sine-Gordon model does lead to a breakdown of de Sitter symmetry and to the vanishing of the vacuum expectation value of the S matrix.

Magnetic and Electric Dipole Constraints on Extra Dimensions and Magnetic Fluxes

The propagation of charged particles and gauge fields in a compact extra dimension contributes to $g-2$ of the charged particles. In addition, a magnetic flux threading this extra dimension generates an electric dipole moment for these particles. We present constraints on the compactification size and on the possible magnetic flux imposed by the comparison of data and theory of the magnetic moment of the muon and from limits on the electric dipole moments of the muon, neutron and electron.

Unparticles: Scales and High Energy Probes

Unparticles from hidden conformal sectors provide qualitatively new possibilities for physics beyond the standard model. In the theoretical framework of minimal models, we clarify the relation between energy scales entering various phenomenological analyses. We show that these relations always counteract the effective field theory intuition that higher dimension operators are more highly suppressed, and that the requirement of a significant conformal window places strong constraints on possible unparticle signals. With these considerations in mind, we examine some of the most robust and sensitive probes and explore novel effects of unparticles on gauge coupling evolution and fermion production at high energy colliders. These constraints are presented both as bounds on four-fermion interaction scales and as constraints on the fundamental parameter space of minimal models.

Noncommutative Coordinates Invariant under Rotations and Lorentz Transformations

Dynamics with noncommutative coordinates invariant under three dimensional rotations or, if time is included, under Lorentz transformations is developed. These coordinates turn out to be the boost operators in SO(1,3) or in SO(2,3) respectively. The noncommutativity is governed by a mass parameter $M$. The principal results are: (i) a modification of the Heisenberg algebra for distances smaller than 1/M, (ii) a lower limit, 1/M, on the localizability of wave packets, (iii) discrete eigenvalues of coordinate operator in timelike directions, and (iv) an upper limit, $M$, on the mass for which free field equations have solutions. Possible restrictions on small black holes is discussed.

Coherent States and N Dimensional Coordinate Noncommutativity

Considering coordinates as operators whose measured values are expectations between generalized coherent states based on the group SO(N,1) leads to coordinate noncommutativity together with full $N$ dimensional rotation invariance. Through the introduction of a gauge potential this theory can additionally be made invariant under $N$ dimensional translations. Fluctuations in coordinate measurements are determined by two scales. For small distances these fluctuations are fixed at the noncommutativity parameter while for larger distances they are proportional to the distance itself divided by a {\em very} large number. Limits on this number will lbe available from LIGO measurements.

Coordinate noncommutativity as low energy effective dynamics

Coordinate noncommutativity, rather than being introduced through deformations of operator products, is achieved by coupling an auxiliary system with large energy excitations to the one of interest. Integrating out the auxiliary dynamics, or equivalently taking ground state expectation values, leads to the desired coordinate noncommutativity. The product responsible for this noncommutativity is different from the Groenewold-Moyal one. For products of operators at unequal times, this procedure differs from the normal, commutative one, for time differences smaller than ones characterized by the auxiliary system; for larger times the operator algebra reverts to the usual one.

Noncommuting spherical coordinates

Restricting the states of a charged particle to the lowest Landau level introduces a noncommutativity between Cartesian coordinate operators. This idea is extended to the motion of a charged particle on a sphere in the presence of a magnetic monopole. Restricting the dynamics to the lowest energy level results in noncommutativity for angular variables and to a definition of a noncommuting spherical product. The values of the commutators of various angular variables are not arbitrary but are restricted by the discrete magnitude of the magnetic monopole charge. An algebra, isomorphic to angular momentum, appears. This algebra is used to define a spherical star product. Solutions are obtained for dynamics in the presence of additional angular dependent potentials.

Expanding Cosmologies in Brane Geometries

Five dimensional gravity coupled, both in the bulk and on a brane, to a scalar Liouville field yields a geometry confined to a strip around the brane and with time dependent scale factors for the four geometry. In various limits known models can be recovered as well as a temporally expanding four geometry with a warp factor falling exponentially away from the brane. The effective theory on the brane has a time dependent Planck mass and ``cosmological constant''. Although the scale factor expands, the expansion is not an acceleration.

An explicit time variable for cosmology and the matter-vacuum energy coincidence

By allowing for non zero vacuum expectation values for some of the fields that appear in the Hamiltonian constraint of canonical general relativity a time variable, with usual properties, can be identified; the constraint plays the role of the ordinary Hamiltonian. The energy eigenvalues contribute to the variation of the scale parameter similarly to the way matter density does. For a universe described by a superposition of eigenstates or by a thermodynamic ensemble the dominant contribution comes from energy, or equivalently effective matter density, of the same order as the vacuum energy (cosmological constant). This may explain the observed ``coincidence'' of these two values.

Gravity in Dynamically Generated Dimensions

A theory of gravity in $d+1$ dimensions is dynamically generated from a theory in $d$ dimensions. As an application we show how $N$ dynamically coupled gravity theories can reduce the effective Planck mass.

Sum Rule for Heavy Meson Decay Widths

A sum rule relating the widths of the decays of mesons belonging to heavy quark multiplets, having the same parity and light quark spin j, into the low lying $0^-$ and $1^-$ multiplet is obtained. As this sum rule follows from properties of the axial charges, it is protected from heavy quark spin dependent $1/m_Q$ corrections. The sum rule works well for mesons containing a heavy charmed quark and, surprisingly, for resonances containing a strange quark.

Approach to Microcanonical Equilibrium for Nonisolated Systems

The approach to equilibrium for systems interacting with their environment by being regularly exposed to low energy, low intensity pulses of some type of quanta is studied. Assuming a randomness condition on the interaction of these quanta with the system, but making no assumptions about the accessible states of the system, we show that microcanonical equilibrium is reached. Although the intensity of the pulses is assumed to be weak the interactions are treated exactly, with no recourse to perturbation theory. The origin of time asymmetry and the absence of recurrence is discussed.

Quark resonances and high E_t jets

Possible spin-3/2 quark resonances would have a significant effect on high E$_{\mbox{\rm t}}$ jet production through their contribution to the subprocess $q+{\bar q}\rightarrow g+g$. Such enhancements are compared to a, recently reported, anomaly in inclusive jet production at the CDF detector.

Tetraquarks: Mesons with two $b$ quarks

We look for the existence of stable (by strong interactions) tetraquarks, mesons containing two heavy antiquarks and two light quarks, specifically a $|{\bar b}{\bar b}qq\rangle$ state. This state is viewed as two $|{\bar b}q\rangle $ particles bound by a potential due to the exchange of the four light pseudoscalar and vector mesons, namely the $\pi,\ \eta,\ \rho$ and $\omega$. Couplings of these particles are obtained by the use of heavy quark symmetry. We find that the $I=0,\ J=1$ state is bound for a large range of parameters, while all other states are not bound (the $I=1,\ J=0$ system may be bound for some parameters at the extreme range of their allowed values). We discuss the reasons why the techniques used cannot be extended to mesons containing two $c$ quarks or a $c$ and $b$ quark.

Transverse Lepton Polarization in Polarized W Decays

Calculations of transverse polarization of leptons in the decay $W\rightarrow lν$ with polarized $W$'s are presented. Planned accelerators will produce enough $W$'s for observation of the Standard Model contributions to this polarization. One loop corrections to the polarization are given; these are too small to be seen at presently available $W$ sources. The exchange of Majorons will contribute to these polarizations; these may provide limits on the couplings of these particles to leptons.
