Robust and Real-Time Bangladeshi Currency Recognition: A Dual-Stream MobileNet and EfficientNet Approach

Accurate currency recognition is essential for assistive technologies, particularly for visually impaired individuals who rely on others to identify banknotes. This dependency puts them at risk of fraud and exploitation. To address these challenges, we first build a new Bangladeshi banknote dataset that includes both controlled and real-world scenarios, ensuring a more comprehensive and diverse representation. Next, to enhance the dataset's robustness, we incorporate four additional datasets, including public benchmarks, to cover various complexities and improve the model's generalization. To overcome the limitations of current recognition models, we propose a novel hybrid CNN architecture that combines MobileNetV3-Large and EfficientNetB0 for efficient feature extraction. This is followed by an effective multilayer perceptron (MLP) classifier to improve performance while keeping computational costs low, making the system suitable for resource-constrained devices. The experimental results show that the proposed model achieves 97.95% accuracy on controlled datasets, 92.84% on complex backgrounds, and 94.98% accuracy when combining all datasets. The model's performance is thoroughly evaluated using five-fold cross-validation and seven metrics: accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, Cohen's Kappa, MCC, and AUC. Additionally, explainable AI methods like LIME and SHAP are incorporated to enhance transparency and interpretability.

Coverage-Recon: Coordinated Multi-Drone Image Sampling with Online Map Feedback

This article addresses collaborative 3D map reconstruction using multiple drones. Achieving high-quality reconstruction requires capturing images of keypoints within the target scene from diverse viewing angles, and coverage control offers an effective framework to meet this requirement. Meanwhile, recent advances in real-time 3D reconstruction algorithms make it possible to render an evolving map during flight, enabling immediate feedback to guide drone motion. Building on this, we present Coverage-Recon, a novel coordinated image sampling algorithm that integrates online map feedback to improve reconstruction quality on-the-fly. In Coverage-Recon, the coordinated motion of drones is governed by a Quadratic Programming (QP)-based angle-aware coverage controller, which ensures multi-viewpoint image capture while enforcing safety constraints. The captured images are processed in real time by the NeuralRecon algorithm to generate an evolving 3D mesh. Mesh changes across the scene are interpreted as indicators of reconstruction uncertainty and serve as feedback to update the importance index of the coverage control as the map evolves. The effectiveness of Coverage-Recon is validated through simulation and experiments, demonstrating both qualitatively and quantitatively that incorporating online map feedback yields more complete and accurate 3D reconstructions than conventional methods. Efficient STAR-RIS Mode for Energy Minimization in WPT-FL Networks with NOMA

With the massive deployment of IoT devices in 6G networks, several critical challenges have emerged, such as large communication overhead, coverage limitations, and limited battery lifespan. FL, WPT, multi-antenna AP, and RIS can mitigate these challenges by reducing the need for large data transmissions, enabling sustainable energy harvesting, and optimizing the propagation environment. Compared to conventional RIS, STAR-RIS not only extends coverage from half-space to full-space but also improves energy saving through appropriate mode selection. Motivated by the need for sustainable, low-latency, and energy-efficient communication in large-scale IoT networks, this paper investigates the efficient STAR-RIS mode in the uplink and downlink phases of a WPT-FL multi-antenna AP network with non-orthogonal multiple access to minimize energy consumption, a joint optimization that remains largely unexplored in existing works on RIS or STAR-RIS. We formulate a non-convex energy minimization problem for different STAR-RIS modes, i.e., energy splitting (ES) and time switching (TS), in both uplink and downlink transmission phases, where STAR-RIS phase shift vectors, beamforming matrices, time and power for harvesting, uplink transmission, and downlink transmission, local processing time, and computation frequency for each user are jointly optimized. To tackle the non-convexity, the problem is decoupled into two subproblems: the first subproblem optimizes STAR-RIS phase shift vectors and beamforming matrices across all WPT-FL phases using block coordinate descent over either semi-definite programming or Rayleigh quotient problems, while the second one allocates time, power, and computation frequency via the one-dimensional search algorithms or the bisection algorithm.

Bidirectional magnetization switching of a ferrimagnetic insulator with monochiral molecules

Recent studies have demonstrated that magnetization switching in ferromagnets can be achieved through adsorbing chiral molecules on the surface without the need for current or external magnetic fields, offering a low-power mechanism for applications in spintronic devices. Opposite chirality molecules cause opposite direction reversals of magnetization through the chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS) mechanism. In this study, we demonstrate bidirectional magnetization switching in thin films of ferrimagnetic insulator TmIG using a single chirality molecule - a Cu metallopolymer of d-leucine. Through UV-VIS circular dichroism and X-ray absorption spectroscopy, we determined that switching between different magnetic orientations is associated with interactions of the d-leucine with the two distinct sublattices of the Fe ions in the TmIG, at octahedral and tetrahedral sites. Our study demonstrates the unexpected versatility of the CISS mechanism for magnetization switching in ferrimagnets using single chirality materials, thereby expanding the potential applications of chiral molecule adsorption-induced magnetization flipping.

Angle-Aware Coverage with Camera Rotational Motion Control

This paper presents a novel control strategy for drone networks to improve the quality of 3D structures reconstructed from aerial images by drones. Unlike the existing coverage control strategies for this purpose, our proposed approach simultaneously controls both the camera orientation and drone translational motion, enabling more comprehensive perspectives and enhancing the map's overall quality. Subsequently, we present a novel problem formulation, including a new performance function to evaluate the drone positions and camera orientations. We then design a QP-based controller with a control barrier-like function for a constraint on the decay rate of the objective function. The present problem formulation poses a new challenge, requiring significantly greater computational efforts than the case involving only translational motion control. We approach this issue technologically, namely by introducing JAX, utilizing just-in-time (JIT) compilation and Graphical Processing Unit (GPU) acceleration. We finally conduct extensive verifications through simulation in ROS (Robot Operating System) and show the real-time feasibility of the controller and the superiority of the present controller to the conventional method.

Long-Lived Coherent Acoustic Phonons in Epitaxially Grown III-V Adiabatic Cavities

We provide evidence of strongly confined coherent acoustic phonons inside high quality factor phononic cavities that exhibit tailoredphonon potentials. Using GaAs/AlAs quasiperiodic superlattices, these functional phonon potentials are realized by adiabatically changing the layer thicknesses along the growth direction. Room temperature ultrafast vibrational spectroscopy reveals discrete phonon levels in the range of $\approx 96-101$ GHz. Additionally, we confirm that phononic cavities significantly retard the energy loss rate of the photoexcited carriers as evidenced by time-resolved photoluminescence measurements. These results highlight the potential of opto-phononic devices that can bridge the divide between phononics and optoelectronics by concurrently engineering electronic and phononic properties.

Frequency-Shift Chirp Spread Spectrum Communications with Index Modulation

This paper introduces a novel frequency-shift chirp spread spectrum (FSCSS) system with index modulation (IM). By using combinations of orthogonal chirp signals for message representation, the proposed FSCSS-IM system is very flexible to design and can achieve much higher data rates than the conventional FSCSS system under the same bandwidth. The paper presents optimal detection algorithms, both coherently and non-coherently, for the proposed FSCSS-IM system. Furthermore, a low-complexity non-coherent detection algorithm is also developed to reduce the computational complexity of the receiver, which is shown to achieve near-optimal performance. Results are presented to demonstrate that the proposed system, while enabling much higher data rates, enjoys similar bit-error performance as that of the conventional FSCSS system.

Deep Learning Techniques for Future Intelligent Cross-Media Retrieval

With the advancement in technology and the expansion of broadcasting, cross-media retrieval has gained much attention. It plays a significant role in big data applications and consists in searching and finding data from different types of media. In this paper, we provide a novel taxonomy according to the challenges faced by multi-modal deep learning approaches in solving cross-media retrieval, namely: representation, alignment, and translation. These challenges are evaluated on deep learning (DL) based methods, which are categorized into four main groups: 1) unsupervised methods, 2) supervised methods, 3) pairwise based methods, and 4) rank based methods. Then, we present some well-known cross-media datasets used for retrieval, considering the importance of these datasets in the context in of deep learning based cross-media retrieval approaches. Moreover, we also present an extensive review of the state-of-the-art problems and its corresponding solutions for encouraging deep learning in cross-media retrieval. The fundamental objective of this work is to exploit Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) for bridging the "media gap", and provide researchers and developers with a better understanding of the underlying problems and the potential solutions of deep learning assisted cross-media retrieval. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first comprehensive survey to address cross-media retrieval under deep learning methods.

Penning ionization of acene molecules by He nanodroplets

Acene molecules (anthracene, tetracene, pentacene) and fullerene (C$_{60}$) are embedded in He nanodroplets (He$_N$) and probed by EUV synchrotron radiation. When resonantly exciting the He nanodroplets, the embedded molecules M are efficiently ionized by the Penning reaction $\mathrm{He}_N^*+\mathrm{M}\rightarrow\mathrm{He}_N + \mathrm{M}^+ + e^-$. However, the Penning electron spectra are broad and structureless -- showing no resemblance neither with those measured by binary Penning collisions, nor with those measured for dopants bound to the He droplet surface. The similarity of all four spectra indicates that electron spectra of embedded species are substantially altered by electron-He scattering. Simulations based on elastic binary electron-He collisions qualitatively reproduce the measured spectra, but require the assumption of unexpectedly large He droplets.

Fast Encoding and Decoding of Flexible-Rate and Flexible-Length Polar Codes

This work is on fast encoding and decoding of polar codes. We propose and detail 8-bit and 16-bit parallel decoders that can be used to reduce the decoding latency of the successive-cancellation decoder. These decoders are universal and can decode flexible-rate and flexible-length polar codes. We also present fast encoders that can be used to increase the throughput of serially-implemented polar encoders.

Transmit Antenna Selection in Underlay Cognitive Radio Environment

Cognitive radio (CR) technology addresses the problem of spectrum under-utilization. In underlay CR mode, the secondary users are allowed to communicate provided that their transmission is not detrimental to primary user communication. Transmit antenna selection is one of the low-complexity methods to increase the capacity of wireless communication systems. In this article, we propose and analyze the performance benefit of a transmit antenna selection scheme for underlay secondary system that ensures the instantaneous interference caused by the secondary transmitter to the primary receiver is below a predetermined level. Closed-form expressions of the outage probability, amount of fading, and ergodic capacity for the secondary network are derived. Monte-carlo simulations are also carried out to confirm various mathematical results presented in this article.

Algorithm for spectral response analysis of superconducting microwave transmission-line resonator

It has always been a challenge for researchers to efficiently and accurately post process experimental data which is distorted by the noise. Superconducting microwave devices e.g. resonators, directional filters, beam-splitters etc. operate at frequency of several GHz to THz and temperatures well below critical temperature (Tc) with few exceptions like transition edge sensors where devices are operated at temperatures close to Tc. These devices are measured usually with vector network analyser in terms of scattering parameters. Two kinds of errors, systematic and drift can easily be removed from the measurements taken with VNA. However, random errors are not easy to address and remove due to their unpredictability and randomness. In this manuscript we will present an algorithm to post process experimental data to cope with measurements that have been corrupted or useful spectral response is buried in spurious signal. We have developed a robust and efficient algorithm, implemented in MATLAB, to detect peaks in spectral response, remove baseline and finally estimate parameters of two-port superconductor resonator using an Improved Nelder-Mead Method for unconstrained multidimensional least square minimization. The algorithm has been successfully tested and verified by processing spectral response of half wavelength microwave transmission-line resonator successfully isolating resonator response from noisy background. We were able to compute loaded quality factor, resonance frequency from response data with high reproducibility even from those experimental data sets where resonance spikes were hardly visible.

ATR-FTIR spectroscopy detects alterations induced by organotin(IV) carboxylates in MCF-7 cells at sub-cytotoxic/-genotoxic concentrations

The environmental impact of metal complexes such as organotin(IV) compounds is of increasing concern. Genotoxic effects of organotin(IV) compounds (0.01 microg/ml, 0.1 microg/ml or 1.0 microg/ml) were measured using the alkaline single-cell gel electrophoresis (comet) assay to measure DNA single-strand breaks (SSBs) and the cytokinesis-block micronucleus (CBMN) assay to determine micronucleus formation. Biochemical-cell signatures were also ascertained using attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy. In the comet assay, organotin(IV) carboxylates induced significantly-elevated levels of DNA SSBs. Elevated micronucleus-forming activities were also observed. Following interrogation using ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, infrared spectra in the biomolecular range (900 cm-1 - 1800 cm-1) derived from orga...
